    What Is a Private One-Day Kyoto Tour Like? A Licensed Guide's Report on Nijo Castle, Kinkaku-ji, and Ryoan-ji The guests were a group visiting from North America. It was their first time in Japan. The tour was assigned in September and carried out later that month. The guests replied quickly, so we were able to decide on the tour content and proceed without any trouble. I took them to Nijo Castle, Kinkaku-ji, and Ryoan-ji. The temperature rose quite a bit in the latter half of the tour, but compared to the peak of midsummer, I think we were able to proceed relatively comfortably. It seemed that each of the guests had a different favorite spot: some preferred Nijo Castle, others liked Kinkaku-ji, and others enjoyed Ryoan-ji the most. A notable stop on the tour was Ryoan-ji Temple. Ryoan-ji is a Zen temple in Kyoto famous for its rock garden, considered one of the finest surviving examples of a Japanese dry landscape (karesansui) garden. The garden consists of fifteen carefully arranged stones set on a bed of raked white gravel, surrounded by an earthen wall. It is said that from any single vantage point, at least one of the stones is always hidden from view, a design that has intrigued visitors and scholars for centuries. The temple was originally founded in the late fifteenth century and is now registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, making it a highlight for many travelers exploring Kyoto's cultural landmarks.

    Title: What Can You See on a Private Kyoto Tour of Arashiyama? A Licensed Guide's Report I guided a group visiting from Oceania. Since they were learning Japanese in class, during the taxi ride between sights some of the guests very charmingly practiced Japanese phrases they had learned, such as "sunny, sometimes cloudy." The day was beautifully clear, and at Jojakko-ji Temple the group was greatly moved by the beauty of the fresh green maple leaves set against the blue sky. After strolling through the bamboo grove, at Tenryu-ji Temple I connected the legend of the "dragon gate" to Pokemon, and the group looked at the stone arrangements with great interest. Afterward, at Shoryuen I introduced matcha cookies and wasabi peanuts, and the group very much enjoyed the samples and had fun shopping for various items. They also enjoyed taiyaki filled with custard cream, eating it with great delight. Finally we visited the Monkey Park, where I waited behind to look after the belongings, and when the group returned they happily reported that "the baby monkeys were so cute!" Everyone in the group loved Kyoto, and it turned out to be a very enjoyable tour.

A Licensed Guide's Report The guest was a visitor arriving in Japan from Oceania after traveling through Europe, and this was their first day in Japan. The guest was very energetic and walked at a quick pace, and expressed a wish to see many different sides of Tokyo. When we met in the morning, the guest said there was no need to go up to the Skytree as originally planned, and asked to visit the Imperial Palace instead, so I adjusted the itinerary. Since this freed up a little time, I also added Nezu Shrine. The guest showed great interest in each destination and asked many questions. As the guest wanted only a light lunch, we stopped at a cafe in Yanaka, where they had an iced coffee and a small salad. At the final stop in Asakusa, the guest appeared a little tired, so after the Hozomon Gate we decided not to see the main hall, and instead walked along other streets before heading back. The guest wanted to write down the names of all the places and things we had seen, so we talked in the hotel lobby before parting ways. The guest was deeply moved and said it had been a wonderful tour, which truly touched me. A notable stop on the tour was Senso-ji Temple in Asakusa. Senso-ji is Tokyo's oldest temple, founded in the 7th century, and is one of the most visited temples in Japan. Visitors pass through the iconic Kaminarimon Gate and the Hozomon Gate, and walk along Nakamise Street, a lively approach lined with shops selling traditional snacks and souvenirs, before reaching the main hall.

    Title: What Is a Private Tsukiji Fish Market Tour Like? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were visitors from Oceania. They had previously hosted international students and homestay students from Japan, so they had many acquaintances in Japan and reunited with some of them during this trip. One of the guests enjoys going out to sea by kayak and fishing as a hobby, and was therefore very interested in the tuna auction. They were amazed at how systematically the auction proceeded and were impressed by how quickly the tuna were bid on and sold. After the auction, I guided them to a sushi restaurant, where one ordered the omakase course and the other ordered grilled eel over rice, and they enjoyed the meal. Since they were full from the sushi, we then explored Tsukiji, visiting a specialty tableware shop, a Japanese knife shop, a cooking utensil shop, and a specialty store for dashi ingredients. I explained Japanese cooking methods, which they were very happy to learn about. A notable stop on the tour was the Tsukiji area. Tsukiji is one of Tokyo's most famous culinary districts, historically home to a major fish market, and its outer market remains a bustling area filled with shops selling fresh seafood, kitchenware, knives, and a wide variety of ingredients. It is a popular destination for both visitors and locals who wish to experience Japanese food culture, sample street food, and learn about traditional cooking tools and techniques.

    Title: What Can You See on a Private One-Day Tour of Tokyo? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were visitors from North America who had arrived in Tokyo the previous day by cruise ship. Although I had not been able to reach them until the day of the tour, they turned out to be very friendly and easygoing, which was reassuring. In the end, apart from their wish to do some shopping, they left the itinerary up to me, and the tour proceeded as noted above. Even though they had traveled around various parts of Japan by cruise, they seemed to really enjoy the old-town atmosphere of Asakusa. The weather forecast was wrong, and heavy rain began around 10:00, so we viewed the area around the Imperial Palace from the car. At Meiji Shrine, we got out and explored on foot. They were impressed to discover an unexpected side of Tokyo in the camphor trees in front of the main hall and the deep green of the forest. Since they were interested in architecture, I introduced Kenzo Tange's Fuji TV headquarters, Kengo Kuma's Asakusa Culture Tourist Information Center and the National Stadium, and Tadao Ando's Omotesando Hills. It was good that they could see the difference between areas like Asakusa and the uptown atmosphere of Omotesando. Over lunch, I explained Japan's cultural background, national character, and the difficulty of the Japanese language. We also enjoyed reminiscing about labor union issues in North America, which had been a shared concern in our earlier working days. I believe they were satisfied to be able to buy the crafts they wanted as well as Hard Rock Cafe goods.

    Title: What Is a Private Family Tour of Tokyo Like? A Licensed Guide's Report on Harajuku, Shibuya, and Ueno The guests were a group visiting from Oceania. Due to the direct impact of a typhoon the previous day, the group was unable to travel from the airport to their hotel in the city after arriving, and were forced to spend the night in the airport lobby. Since they had to move to their hotel on the morning of the tour, I adjusted part of the itinerary through communication with the representative and delayed the start of the tour by one hour. At the guests' request, I reserved a private room at a yakiniku restaurant in Harajuku, and we had lunch together. Everyone enjoyed the signature wagyu and various other cuts of meat, along with drinks, salad, soup, and the self-service style Japanese yakiniku experience. It was especially popular, with comments such as wanting to come and eat there every other day. Afterwards, on Takeshita Street, they took their time enjoying shopping at capsule toy shops and cosmetics stores, prioritizing what the group most wanted to see. In Shibuya, we crossed the Scramble Crossing twice and took photos, and then everyone ordered their choice of ice cream at a popular ice cream shop on the second basement floor of Shibuya 109. The colorful, unlimited toppings with a wide variety of options were especially well received. After that, we headed to our final destination, Ueno Park. However, one of the guests realized they had left their glasses in a shopping basket at a convenience store inside Ueno Station, so I accompanied them back inside and provided support. We were able to safely recover the glasses, which had been kept at the store, and they were very pleased. At parting, the entire group expressed their gratitude for the tour, and thanked me warmly for the extra support, which began with sharing information about the approaching typhoon a week earlier, and included communication with the local agent and the guests when all transportation was cut off upon arrival. They also said they would leave a tour review.

    What's a Full-Day Private Tokyo Tour Like? A Licensed Guide's Report Covering Meiji Shrine, Asakusa, and Shibuya The guests were a lovely group visiting from North America. They planned to sightsee in Tokyo, Mount Fuji, and Nikko before a cruise. Although they had only arrived the previous day, they were very energetic and walked more than 15,000 steps during the tour. Meiji Shrine was quiet since we visited early in the morning, and it felt very refreshing. The Otemon Gate, which had been closed until the day before, was open as well. They seemed very satisfied with a lunch of soba and tempura at Mitsukoshi. Afterward, they also enjoyed nigiri sushi and wagyu beef in Tsukiji. They enjoyed shopping along Nakamise Street in Asakusa, and finally we went to the Shibuya Crossing before parting ways at Shinjuku Station. We were blessed with good weather and managed to visit as many as seven places. A notable stop on the tour was Meiji Shrine. Meiji Shrine is a Shinto shrine in the heart of Tokyo, dedicated to the deified spirits of Emperor Meiji and Empress Shoken. Surrounded by a lush forest of over 100,000 trees donated from across Japan, it offers a peaceful retreat from the busy city. Visitors can experience traditional Shinto rituals, write wishes on wooden ema plaques, and pass through the impressive torii gates that mark the entrance to this sacred site.

    What Is a Private Day Trip from Tokyo to Kyoto Like? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were visitors from North America. It was a slightly hurried schedule since it was a day trip from Tokyo, but I eagerly showed them many different places. Apart from Fushimi Inari and Kiyomizu-dera, the sites were not so crowded. Neither of them did any shopping, and they took many photos with their phones. I had been told the arrival time and train number but received no contact, and after getting a messaging app notice that they had arrived, I looked around and found them right nearby. After the tour ended, they said they would return to Tokyo on the bullet train around 7:00 and were looking for somewhere to have dinner, so we said our goodbyes at Teramachi Shopping Street. A notable stop on the tour was Kiyomizu-dera Temple in Kyoto. Kiyomizu-dera is one of Kyoto's most celebrated temples, founded in the late 8th century and now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is famous for its large wooden stage that juts out from the main hall, offering sweeping views over the city and the surrounding hills, which are especially beautiful during the cherry blossom and autumn foliage seasons. The temple's name, meaning "Pure Water Temple," comes from the Otowa Waterfall on its grounds, where visitors drink from three streams said to grant health, success, and love. The approach to the temple leads through the historic sloping streets of Sannenzaka and Ninenzaka, lined with traditional shops and teahouses, making it one of the most atmospheric places to experience old Kyoto.

Getting away from the bustle of Tokyo, they seemed to relax in scenery that reminded them of a familiar landscape from home. To everyone's delight, Mount Fuji even revealed itself, which was a rare treat for me as well, and the guests were very pleased. On clear days, visitors can enjoy stunning views of Mount Fuji reflected on its waters, and sightseeing pirate ships cruise across the lake, offering a relaxing way to take in the surrounding mountains and forests. The lake is also home to the famous torii gate of Hakone Shrine standing at the water's edge, a popular photo spot that beautifully blends nature and Japanese spiritual tradition.

    Title: What Is a Private Food and Culture Tour of Tokyo Like? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were a group visiting Japan, some based in North America, some based in Oceania, and one originally from Africa, who had been friends for many years. The guests worked in fields related to large-scale video equipment used for live events at separate companies, and they enjoyed traveling together nearly every year. When I asked what had connected them so strongly, they answered simply, "Because we all love a good drink." One of the guests had requested "local Japanese food," so we went to a well-known restaurant in Tsukiji famous for its simmered fish, which had recently been featured on a Japanese TV program, and we savored nodoguro (blackthroat seaperch). The place was a little small and old, but the guests said, "This is exactly the kind of place I like." Afterwards, at another restaurant, we enjoyed wagyu beef, grilled skewers of king crab from Hokkaido, and sake. Looking at the bustling, cluttered streets of Tsukiji, one of the guests again said, "This is really my kind of place." The guests were quite knowledgeable about Japan. At Nakamise, seeing the swords, they spoke of Miyamoto Musashi; seeing the giant straw sandal at Senso-ji Temple, they recalled the great straw sandal at Ko-no-Gongen in Hanno City; and they even knew about the ninja tool (kunai) that was being sold alongside shuriken. At Meiji Shrine, when I introduced the offering sake barrels, one of the guests asked, "Is there any sake left inside?" so I answered, "It seems Emperor Meiji drank it all." When I explained that Emperor Meiji took the lead in promoting Westernization, wearing Western clothing and consuming beef and milk, one of the guests laughed and said, "Thanks to him, we can enjoy Kobe beef too." One of the guests drew an omikuji fortune reading, "Take on the hardest challenges with all your effort," and shared a wry smile with another member of the group. A notable stop on the tour was Meiji Shrine. Meiji Shrine is a Shinto shrine in Tokyo dedicated to Emperor Meiji and Empress Shoken, set within a vast forested area of over 100,000 trees donated from across Japan. It is one of the most visited shrines in the country, especially during the New Year, and its rows of sake barrels offered to the enshrined deities are a well-known sight along the approach.
