What Is a Private One-Day Kyoto Tour Like? A Licensed Guide's Report on Nijo Castle, Kinkaku-ji, and Ryoan-ji

The guests were a group visiting from North America. It was their first time in Japan. The tour was assigned in September and carried out later that month. The guests replied quickly, so we were able to decide on the tour content and proceed without any trouble. I took them to Nijo Castle, Kinkaku-ji, and Ryoan-ji. The temperature rose quite a bit in the latter half of the tour, but compared to the peak of midsummer, I think we were able to proceed relatively comfortably. It seemed that each of the guests had a different favorite spot: some preferred Nijo Castle, others liked Kinkaku-ji, and others enjoyed Ryoan-ji the most. A notable stop on the tour was Ryoan-ji Temple. Ryoan-ji is a Zen temple in Kyoto famous for its rock garden, considered one of the finest surviving examples of a Japanese dry landscape (karesansui) garden. The garden consists of fifteen carefully arranged stones set on a bed of raked white gravel, surrounded by an earthen wall. It is said that from any single vantage point, at least one of the stones is always hidden from view, a design that has intrigued visitors and scholars for centuries. The temple was originally founded in the late fifteenth century and is now registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, making it a highlight for many travelers exploring Kyoto's cultural landmarks.
