    What's a Private Walking Tour of Sapporo Like? A Licensed Guide's Report The weather was slightly overcast, with a temperature of 14–15°C. Until I met them, I had understood there would be three guests, but the group turned out to be two people. Some of the guests had gone ahead to Kutchan without stopping in Sapporo. The guests comfortably enjoyed the walking tour. The guests were from Oceania and enjoyed traveling as a hobby, having visited most parts of the world except Africa, and were visiting Japan for the second time. I gave an overview of Hokkaido and Sapporo, including its history, climate, industry, and the indigenous people, and the guests listened with great interest.

Since they did not want three people seated in the back, we split into two vehicles. When they asked whether two cars meant two guides, I explained that I would provide the explanations at each sightseeing spot. One of the guests, who was nearly of advanced years and used a cane, joined us. They commented that Nijubashi Bridge was beautiful. In Asakusa, the guests enjoyed shopping along Nakamise Street. At lunch, since one of the guests had a professional connection to a well-known entertainer, that entertainer joined us, and they enjoyed reuniting after a long time. Afterward, we visited Meiji Shrine. They said the forest was beautiful, but walking seemed difficult for them. We then went to Shinjuku Gyoen, but the entrance was very crowded and there was little time to look around slowly, so I regret that I should have made the visit to Meiji Shrine shorter. I believe the guests enjoyed themselves, but they seemed tired since we walked quite a lot.

    Can You Do a 6-Hour Private Tour of Tokyo from a Yokohama Hotel? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were visiting Japan for the first time from North America. Because they were going to board a cruise around Japan, they were staying at a hotel in Yokohama, but they were also very eager to sightsee in Tokyo. Since they had booked two consecutive days of a 6-hour Tokyo tour, I anticipated that we could cover the major sightseeing spots. However, since the weather forecast indicated rain on the second day, I slightly revised the original plan and rescheduled the locations most likely to be affected by rain to the first day. After traveling from Yokohama to Tokyo, our first destination was Hama-rikyu Gardens. Under a blue sky and in refreshing air, the guests were able to fully appreciate the beauty of a Japanese garden. One of the guests had a strong interest in plants and was especially delighted. The Somei-Yoshino cherry blossoms, which I had half given up on, were still in full bloom, and the guests took many photos of the flowers, including many varieties of cherry blossoms. For lunch, at a sushi restaurant in Tsukiji, they watched with great interest as the sushi chef prepared the sushi from counter seats, and both enjoyed premium nigiri sushi. Afterward, on the way to the Imperial Palace, we passed through Ginza, and as it was a Saturday afternoon on the weekend, they happened to be able to stroll along Ginza Street during its pedestrian-only hours, which delighted them. Since they could not add to their luggage before boarding the cruise ship, they refrained from buying souvenirs, but on Asakusa's Nakamise shopping street, they purchased several beautiful chopsticks at a specialty chopstick shop. It turned out to be a somewhat ambitious itinerary, but they remained in good spirits to the end, and we finished the first day of the tour and said goodbye at the hotel.

    What Is a Private Cruise Excursion Tour from Niigata Port Like? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were visitors from North America traveling on a cruise excursion. One of them mainly spoke Spanish, but with support from the group, we were able to communicate in English with almost no problems. In fact, until two days after the cruise ship departed from Tokyo, there had been no direct contact from the travelers themselves, so I was quite worried about whether the guests would be satisfied with the course I had proposed. I had received messages from the travel agency, and Kobayashi at [Japan Guide Agency (JGA Inc.)](https://www.j-g-a.org/) continued to support me throughout, so I was praying and trusting that we would surely be able to meet at Niigata Port. The day before, I visited the private taxi company to discuss the course, and they gave me many alternative plans in case the guests were not interested in the course I proposed, so I was well prepared for any surprises on the day. When the guests disembarked fifteen minutes later than the appointed time, I felt truly relieved. The guests were very warm toward each other and enjoyed the tour while looking after one another. They were delighted with everything — the cherry blossoms at Shibata Castle, the garden at Shimizuen, the sake barrel-breaking experience at Ohmon Sake Brewery, and the rapeseed flower fields at Fukushimagata — so I was truly happy. The taxi driver from Bandai Taxi, Mr. Itabashi, was also extremely cooperative and helped us at every turn. This was actually my first time doing a tour with a dedicated vehicle. Since there was almost no need to manage the itinerary around catching public transportation, I was able to keep an eye on whether the guests were enjoying themselves and focus more on conversation and providing information. As a request, first of all, since there is no public transportation at all at Niigata Port, if there is a booking for a private tour at Niigata Port, I think it would be good to propose a dedicated vehicle in advance. Also, and this is entirely my own personal request, this time I took on this job while based in Tokyo, and the transportation cost was ¥20,040 round trip plus about ¥5,000 for a business hotel. Thanks to having lived in Yamagata Prefecture last year, I was allowed to join the Niigata group, but now that I have returned to Tokyo, I do not have a family home there, and this time I traveled round trip specifically for this tour. Niigata City is accessible within two hours from Tokyo, and I feel that if I take on such work repeatedly, I could propose even better tours to guests in cooperation with the private taxi company. I would love to become a regular for work in Niigata, and at the same time, I would be grateful if some transportation cost support could be provided. In regional cities there are few guides, and there may be many cases where requested tours are being declined. There was also a shortage of guides in Yamagata Prefecture. I think this is very unfortunate. From the guests' perspective, simply knowing that "a guide has been found!" would put them at ease, give them peace of mind, and overall likely leave them with a better impression of Japan. In this sense too, I would be grateful if you could give some thought to transportation cost support for guides. I apologize for writing something so presumptuous.

    What Can You See on a 6-Hour Private Tour of Takayama? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests had originally requested only a sake brewery, Takayama Jinya, the Sanmachi-suji old town, and the sake brewery, but since it looked like the 6 hours would leave time to spare, after the sake brewery I recommended the nearby Takayama Festival Floats Exhibition Hall and Sakurayama Hachimangu Shrine, which they agreed to, so we visited them. The Takayama Festival happened to be just two days later, and after seeing the floats and footage of the Takayama Festival, the guests said, "We would have loved to see the Takayama Festival in person." They had always been fond of various kinds of Japanese cuisine, and at the Miyagawa Morning Market and along Sanmachi-suji they purchased items such as miso and sake. For lunch, they enjoyed a tofu-based meal. Afterward, with about another hour to spare, I guided them to the Hida Takayama Retro Museum and, as a dinner option, to Dekonaru Yokocho.

    Title: What's a Private Day Tour of Hiroshima and Miyajima Like? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were visitors from Europe. We met at 12:00, visiting the Peace Memorial Park in the morning and Miyajima in the afternoon. At the memorial museum, they seemed to deeply feel the tragedy of the atomic bombing. By the time we reached Miyajima it was evening, but the weather was calm, and they took many photos while gazing at the great torii gate lit by the setting sun, appearing very satisfied. According to them, they had arrived in Japan about ten days earlier and had not been blessed with good weather throughout their trip, so they were very pleased to enjoy the finest weather in Hiroshima, their final destination.

I earned a Ph.D. through a national university’s professional program while working at Mazda Motor Corporation. Five years before retiring from the company, I was seconded to Hiroshima University, a national university, where I served as a specially appointed professor.     Title: What's a Private Walking Tour of Kyoto's Higashiyama and Gion Like? A Licensed Guide's Report Body: The JR line had stopped due to the discovery of a suspicious object, so I quickly changed routes and managed to arrive just in time for the start of the tour. Since the guests wanted to visit beautiful, quintessentially Japanese places and learn about many things, we started at Kiyomizu-dera. A taxi would have been faster, but I thought they might enjoy the local atmosphere of riding the bus, so I asked, and indeed they wanted to try the bus. Fortunately, we were able to board smoothly. Because it was still fairly early in the morning, the crowds were lighter than during the day, and the guests seemed to enjoy it at a relaxed pace. After that, we walked slowly to Ninenzaka, the Yasaka Pagoda, Kennin-ji, and Gion. At Kennin-ji, the cherry blossoms were still beautiful, and the guests were deeply moved by everything—the gardens, the abbot's quarters, the tea room, and the Dharma hall. In Gion, we were also fortunate to be able to enter, right away and by chance, the teppanyaki restaurant the guests had said they wanted to try, in a perfect location with a close-up view along the Shirakawa. I had the impression that everything truly went smoothly. Since we had a little under an hour to spare, I guided them to Higashi Hongan-ji and Shosei-en, which are near the Hotel. Adding the grand scale of Higashi Hongan-ji and the beauty of its garden at the end, even though it was not on the original plan, was something I am glad the guests were able to enjoy.

    Title: What Can You See on a Private One-Day Tokyo Tour? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were a group visiting Japan from Oceania. They had arrived the previous night and planned to travel around Japan over the next two weeks, with a seven-day stay in Tokyo. As a result, this became a tour focused mainly on explaining the geographical relationships between various regions. First, I guided the group around the outer market of Tsukiji, which they seemed to enjoy very much, and they said they would like to set aside more time to return there. Next, I took them to the Imperial Palace and Nijubashi Bridge, where I focused on explaining the relationship between the Imperial Family and Japanese history. To help them learn how to use public transportation, I explained how to change trains and which stations to transfer at, using a map and taking the subway and JR lines. After guiding them to Shinjuku Golden Gai, we had lunch, and then I explained Shinto while we viewed the grounds of Meiji Shrine from the north approach, allowing them to enjoy its distinctive atmosphere. Finally, we headed to the Shibuya Crossing, but since the guests wished to continue exploring Shibuya on their own, we concluded the tour at that point.
