Tour Itinerary in Detail
The tour started at 09:00 at hotel in Shiomi and ended at 15:00. The day ran to 6 hours from start to finish.
Over the course of the day the route took in Help obtain JR Pass at the JR Cafe inside Tokyo Station at 10:00, Stroll around Asakusa at 11:00, Izakaya lunch at Yanaka Ginza at 13:00, Shopping in Harajuku at 14:00 and Shibuya Scramble Crossing at 14:45.
Travel between the sites was by public transport: Shiomi to Tokyo by train (200JPY); Tokyo to Asakusa by train (380JPY); Asakusa to Nippori by train (340JPY); Nippori to Harajuku by train (260JPY); Harajuku to Shibuya by train (160JPY). Across 5 sections the fare came to 1,340JPY per person.
What's a Private Tokyo Walking Tour Like? A Licensed Guide's Report on Asakusa, Yanaka, Harajuku, and Shibuya
The guests were a group visiting from Oceania. They shared many fascinating stories with me, including the traditional haka war dance and how the indigenous traditions of their homeland are preserved, and as a big fan of rugby's All Blacks (New Zealand's national team), I was able to spend a truly valuable time with them. Talking with one of the guests about the recent activities of former All Blacks players now playing in Japan, the tour started off with a lively atmosphere from the very beginning. One of the guests had also worked for a major electronics company in Asia, and having been based in Singapore for six years myself, we enjoyed reminiscing about local Singapore topics together.
The tour began in Asakusa. First, from Azuma Bridge, I explained the structure of Tokyo Skytree and behind-the-scenes stories from the time of its construction, and the guests were impressed that this modern, tall tower uses the same structural principles as the five-story pagoda in Nara. At Sensoji Temple, one of the guests drew an omikuji fortune and was delighted to pull the best possible fortune. On Kannon-dori, there was a limited-time workshop making shirts from recycled kimono (their home base is in Shiga Prefecture), and one of the guests loved the shirts so much that they happily took a photo in a haka pose with the shop owner in front of the store.
In Yanaka Ginza, we bought menchi-katsu, fried horse mackerel, and fried quail eggs at a delicatessen, then went to a standing bar where one of the guests chose a summer limited-edition sake and the other chose an amber-style beer, enjoying the kakuuchi drinking experience. Both of the guests loved the deep-fried quail egg skewers.
In Harajuku, at the request of one of the guests, we visited a shoe brand's outlet store, and they purchased a pair. Although the same brand is available in their home country, they said the selection in the Japanese store was much more extensive, and they immediately changed into their newly purchased shoes and enjoyed the rest of the tour.
Finally, at the strong request of one of the guests, we experienced the Shibuya Scramble Crossing, where they enjoyed taking many photos together.

Incredible experience at the Markets!
Toru was an AMAZING host and tour guide. He went above and beyond with communication prior, during, and after to make sure my Son and I had an incredible experience. He was unbelievably knowledgeable and catered the tour to what we wanted as well. The sushi breakfast was unreal! Learning all about both Toyosu and Tsukiji markets was an experience we will never forget. 10 out of 10 for sure!!

This was our first time visiting a fish market, and from the time we booked the experience, Toru-san has been amazing. He helped us get to Toyosu market, where the tuna auction takes place, at the right time to get the best views and explained everything about how the auction works and made sure we didn’t miss anything. (You will need a knowledgeable tour guide because everything happens so fast and you might miss it!) We learned so much during such a short time about how the delicious tuna you eat at a sushi restaurant ends up in front of you. After the auction Toru-san took us to Okame, a great sushi restaurant, where we got to experience delicious sushi breakfast. Our next stop was Tsukiji market, and again we got to try all sorts of food and learn more about the market and got to meet some of the vendors. Everyone was so welcoming and friendly. If you are interested in cooking, Japanese cuisine, or know someone home, this tour will give you the opportunity to do some shopping for unique souvenirs.
We had to get to Toyosu market before 5 am, and while you might think it’s too early, but why not do something fun and delicious with your jetlag? It was so worth it and I’m glad we chose to spend our first morning in Tokyo with Toru-san. The other advantage of being so early was that the market was not as crowded and we got to enjoy our time without having to wait in line.

Toru was a fantastic guide and made our experience one to remember. He picked us up
from the hotel and clearly knew how to be there early to get a good view. He also took us to
a delicious sushi place thereafter which the whole family enjoyed.
