    Title: What's a Private One-Day Tokyo Temple and Shrine Tour Like? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were friendly and cheerful visitors from North America. One of the guests in particular liked to go at their own pace and occasionally wandered off to take photos, which made me a little anxious in crowded spots. At first they had hoped to visit Gotokuji Temple, but when I mentioned that it might make the schedule a bit rushed, they decided to swap one of the two temples for somewhere closer. Since they wanted to see both a Buddhist site and a Shinto site, I recommended Meiji Shrine. At Meiji Shrine we happened to come across two wedding ceremonies, and at Sensoji Temple they drew a "great blessing" fortune, so they were delighted at their good luck. They also listened attentively to my explanations about history and religion. At the end, I explained how to get to Tokyo Skytree, how to return to their hotel, and how to reach Shibuya the next day, and then we said goodbye.

    Title: What Is a Private One-Day Tokyo Tour Like With a Licensed Guide? A JGA Guide's Report Body: The guests were a group visiting from North America. It seemed that one member of the group had booked the tour, but the tour details had not been shared among the group, and since each person had completely different interests, I arranged the destinations so that everyone could be satisfied in their own way. At Tsukiji Market, the guests enjoyed themselves while sampling tuna, tamagoyaki (rolled omelet), strawberries, matcha, and more. At Shinjuku Gyoen, the Somei Yoshino cherry blossoms had already begun to fall, but the yae-zakura (double-flowered cherry blossoms) were in bloom, and the guests took photos here and there and enjoyed the cherry blossoms. On Takeshita Street, since the group had completely different preferences, I accompanied part of the group shopping at a vintage clothing store, and then we headed promptly to Meiji Shrine. Part of the group seemed satisfied to connect with the history there. In Shibuya, we simply viewed the Scramble Crossing (as one of the guests had already been there the previous day), and then the guests returned to their hotel.     Title: What Is a Relaxed Private Yokohama Sightseeing Tour Like? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were set to begin a two-week cruise the following day. After extensive walking during their Tokyo sightseeing up to the previous day, they were quite tired, so I avoided slopes and stairs as much as possible. It had the feel of a relaxed, unhurried trip. At Sankeien Garden, the guests had the chance to interact with a Japanese-speaking volunteer guide, which I believe made for a lovely memory (see photo). At the Silk Museum, they were able to try actual weaving, and one of the guests spent a very enjoyable time. One of the guests had brought a camera and took plenty of photos in many spots. I confirmed the itinerary at each stage, and we traveled using taxis.

    Title: What's a Private One-Day Tour of Tsukiji, Asakusa, and Meiji Shrine in Tokyo Like? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests today were visitors from North America. We first visited Tsukiji and strolled around the area. They were surprised by the large number of international tourists. Since they had just finished breakfast, they did not sample anything in particular, and we moved on to Asakusa. In Asakusa, they showed interest in ningyo-yaki and enjoyed tasting some. They asked whether it was always this crowded, and when I answered that it feels like this whenever you come, they were amazed. Finally, we visited Meiji Shrine, where they were delighted to be able to see a traditional Shinto wedding ceremony.

    • 1430 When we were about to head to Meiji Shrine, they said "I can't walk any further," so we ended the tour here, caught a TAXI, and they returned to the hotel.

    Tour Title: What's a Private Tokyo Day Tour Like? A Licensed Guide's Report on Yurikamome, Asakusa, and Ueno Park The guests were a group visiting from North America. They had arrived in Japan a couple of days earlier, and had gone to Hakone the previous day, but the weather had not been great, so the only thing that had left an impression on them was the black eggs of Owakudani. Since they said they almost never use public transportation, they were delighted by things like the automated driving of the Yurikamome line and were busy taking photos. We arrived safely in Asakusa, and because the weather had recovered from the previous days, there was an enormous crowd. Although surprised, they still enjoyed a bit of shopping. They asked about lunch, but we gave up on Asakusa due to the crowds and decided to eat at Ueno Park. Since one of the guests followed a plant-based diet, I was unsure what to do, but as they were happy to have soba with salt and wasabi, we had lunch at a soba restaurant on the first floor of Sakura Terrace. At Ueno Park, about half of the last cherry blossoms remained, so they enjoyed them. They looked on with great interest at the flower-viewing gatherings and drinking parties beneath the trees. Around the time we walked through Ameyoko, some of them began to say they were getting tired. After walking along Gyoko-dori from Tokyo Station, they felt it would be difficult to walk any further, so we ended the tour there, caught a taxi to return to the Hotel, and parted ways. From the next day, they were scheduled to board a cruise ship.

    I had worked in the international business scene for over 40 years and traveled to North America and European countries over 1000 days.
    After I retired from the business, I traveled to most of the major sightseeing spots in all 47 prefectures in Japan.

    My guide is starting from a brief history of the site where I am going to guide. I usually add a briefing about Japanese culture based on religions, such as Shinto Shrine and Buddhist temples. A geographic background behind the history is also important.
    My course includes 4 to 5 (in 6 hours) sites from the following depending on where I will pick the guests up;

    I am happy to introduce Japanese Manga/Anime cultures such as Akihabara, Nakano Broadway and Ghibli related sites.
    Travelling along the JR central line where guests can stopover at major animation studios (it is not accepted to visit the inside). The majority of animation studios such as TMS Entertainment, SUNRISE, A1 Pictures etc. are located in this area. Suginami Animation museum, Studio Ghibli and Ghibli Museum are also located.
    Guests can feel old houses in the Spirited Away scene in the Edo-Tokyo Open Air Architectural Museum.

    I can also provide a pilgrimage to the sacred place (shooting location) for the Shinkai Makoto animation movies such as Your name, Weathering with you, and Suzume.

    Another interesting feature is to visit authentic Japanese style pub meals such as Yakitori, Karaage, and Sushi etc.
    Asakusa Hoppy Street, Ameyoko Street, Yurakucho, Shimbashi, Shinjuku Golden gai, Shinjuku Omoide Yokocho are nice to visit.

    A Sake tasting at Sake Cellar can be an option.

    In addition to the above, I am available in the neighboring cities.

    Kawagoe is an old town developed in the 17th century. It has very close relationship with the Edo central government. Kawagoe castle ruins, Kitain temple and 500 Buddha statues will welcome the guests.
    These areas are renovated and provide an old days atmosphere.
    Japanese style sweets food stands will fascinate the guests.
    Kawagoe is about 1 – 1.5 train trip from Tokyo.

    Kamakura is the first Samurai worriers government established in the late 12th century.
    The Buddhism are introduced to Japan in the 6th century, and flourished at Nara and Kyoto later. A newer Buddhism sect such as Zen has well developed at Kamakura area.
    Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine, Gigantic Buddha statue at Kotokuin Temple and the flower temple Hasedera Temple are must-see.
    Kamakura is about 1 – 1.5 train trip from Tokyo.

    What's a Private Himeji Castle and Mount Shosha Tour Like During Cherry Blossom Season? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were a group of three adults visiting from North America. Since it was cherry blossom season, we visited Himeji Castle and Kokoen Garden in the morning to avoid the crowds as much as possible, and went to Mount Shosha in the afternoon. Around midday there were many tourists and it was difficult to find a place for lunch, but we managed to have lunch at a restaurant in front of the castle. After that, we took a taxi to the base of Mount Shosha and explored Engyoji Temple using the ropeway and a microbus. The guests had originally requested a 4-hour tour, but at their request to visit Mount Shosha in addition to Himeji Castle, two hours were added. They had especially mentioned wanting to visit the filming location of "The Last Samurai," so they were very pleased when we went to Mount Shosha. Contrary to the weather forecast, it was fine weather all day, and the guests seemed satisfied at the end of the tour.

    What Is a 6-Hour Private Walking Tour of Tokyo Like? A Licensed Guide's Report on Shibakoen, Tsukiji, and Asakusa The weather was beautiful, and the guests were delighted that it was perfect for a walking tour. At Zojoji Temple, the guests took photographs with great interest, capturing the contrast between the temple and Tokyo Tower against the clear blue sky. At the Tsukiji Outer Market, the guests enjoyed tuna sushi, hearty wagyu beef BBQ, seafood BBQ, and strawberry daifuku and strawberry skewers. They were especially impressed by the juicy wagyu beef and the fresh strawberries. At Fukagawa Fudo, the guests said the powerful drumming and the flames of the goma fire ritual were striking, and they told me it was the most exciting of all the places we visited today. We visited the Ghibli shop at Solamachi by request, as some of the guests are Ghibli fans. The guests enjoyed shopping for Ghibli goods. Sensoji Temple was crowded, but the guests were moved by how beautiful the Kaminarimon Gate and the five-story pagoda were. When one of the guests drew "daikichi" (great blessing) in an omikuji fortune, I explained that the probability of drawing daikichi at Sensoji is quite low, and the guest was overjoyed. Boasting, "The good weather today is thanks to my great blessing," the guest carefully carried the fortune slip home. The guests were on very good terms with one another, and it was such a wonderful 6 hours that I found myself smiling as we chatted together.

    • At 10:00 I had a meeting at Hotel MYSTAY Premier Hamamatsucho in Daimon, and I arrived 15 minutes early and waited, but even at 9:10 no one came out, so I checked with the front desk and found out that where I was was MYSTAY Hamamatsucho, a different hotel of the same chain, so I had the front desk call the Premier, which was very close by, and headed to the correct hotel. We met at the main entrance at 9:15. At 10:25 we moved on foot from Daimon to Higashi-Ginza, in front of the Kabukiza Theater, Ginza 4-chome, and toured the Tokyo International Forum in Yurakucho, the Mitsubishi Ichigokan, the Meiji Yasuda Life Insurance Building, and the Nijubashi Bridge of the Imperial Palace, then by taxi to the KITTE Building at 12:30, Tokyo Station, the Daimaru basement food floor, and lunch at 13:15. Ueno Park, the statue of Saigo Takamori, Kiyomizu Kannon, the row of cherry trees, the Inari Shrine, Ueno Toshogu Shrine, the front garden of the National Museum of Western Art, then moved to Asakusa by subway, at 15:10 the Kaminarimon Gate and Sensoji Temple. From Asakusa we moved to Tokyo Skytree by taxi. At 16:10 the Tokyo Skytree observation deck. At Asakusa Station on the Toei Asakusa Line, I explained the way home to Daimon and we parted. Total guide time: 7 hours.

A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were first-time visitors to Japan from North America, arriving the day before the tour. Because jet lag can be difficult, I had advised them in advance to sleep well on the plane and on their arrival day. During the tour, some of the guests shared thoughts about regional differences within their home country, noting that policies are often decided by politicians from another part of the country. There has been growing interest in Japan among travelers from North America, and it seems likely that more will choose to visit Japan going forward. Some members of the group stayed home, while others joined the trip. One of the guests was an ice hockey player. Since the plans for the following days were still uncertain, I prepared and handed over a detailed two-day itinerary in advance, in case they decided to explore on their own. Along with this, I provided reference materials on an overview of Japanese history, the difference between the Emperor and the Shogun, the founding of the Kamakura shogunate, how Tokugawa Ieyasu established the Tokugawa shogunate, and the story of Chushingura. As gifts, I also presented some chocolates and character-themed sweets (about 1,700 yen in total). One of the guests spoke to another about the importance of learning world history. I believe I was able to show them many places in a single day.

    Title: What Is a Private Himeji Castle and Kokoen Garden Walking Tour Like? A Licensed Guide's Report Today's guests were a group visiting from North America. The tour was scheduled to start at 9:00, but due to a security check for a suspicious object at Kyoto Station, the rapid train the guide had planned to take was suspended, so I contacted the guests and started the tour five minutes late (the guests arrived on schedule by Shinkansen from Hiroshima). During the tour, I explained the overview and historical background of Himeji Castle at the Castle View point, and then we visited Himeji Castle, Kokoen Garden, and a souvenir shop. Since the guests wished to have a meal at a nearby restaurant, I concluded the tour in front of the souvenir shop. Among the guests, one spoke English while the other was not so comfortable with English. For this reason, I proceeded with the tour by explaining in English, after which it was conveyed in Spanish to the other. Today was Saturday, and since the cherry blossom viewing season was ending today (rain was forecast for the next day), Himeji Castle was crowded with tourists, but I believe the guests enjoyed their sightseeing in Himeji.

    Title: What's a Private One-Day Kyoto Tour Like? A Licensed Guide's Report on Arashiyama, Kinkaku-ji, and Kiyomizu-dera The guests were a group visiting from North America. It was everyone's first time in Japan. They had been staying in Japan for about a week, spending time in Tokyo before coming to Kyoto. That morning, a suspicious object was found at Kyoto Station, which caused all local lines to be suspended, and perhaps as a result, the Arashiyama Bamboo Grove was less crowded than expected. On the way from the bamboo grove to Otagi Nenbutsu-ji Temple, the guests were impressed by the scenery of the preservation district of historic buildings. As soon as we arrived at Kinkaku-ji, some of the guests said they wanted soft-serve ice cream, so they bought some at the shop on the grounds and enjoyed it. Kinkaku-ji was also less crowded than expected. The guests were interested in shoguns and samurai, and everyone seemed to enjoy Nijo Castle. On the way to Kiyomizu-dera, Gojozaka was very crowded, so our stroll around Kiyomizu-dera was a bit shorter. After the tour, the guests wished to visit a samurai museum, so at their request I dropped them off near Shijo-Teramachi, and we parted ways.
