What Can You See on a 4-Hour Private Kyoto Tour by Taxi? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were a group visiting from Europe. It was their first trip to Japan, and by the time we met it was their fifth day in the country, having already spent three days in Tokyo. Unfortunately it rained everywhere they went, but they were deeply moved by the beauty of Japan and the kindness of the Japanese people. Soon after this assignment was confirmed, I received an email with requests for places they wanted to visit. Their wish was a 4-hour course from their hotel covering Fushimi Inari, Kiyomizu-dera, Sannenzaka, Ninenzaka, Yasaka Pagoda, Kodai-ji, and Gion. I thought it would be quite tight, but the guests wanted to use taxis as much as possible in order to see as many places as they could, so we settled on the above course. At Fushimi Inari, I talked about Shinto in Japan, the large torii gate at the entrance, Inari shrines, the fox statues, and, while walking through the Senbon Torii, how the gates are lined up thanks to donations from individuals and companies. They listened with great interest. They also tried the Omokaru-ishi (the "heavy-light stone"). One of the guests had a fractured left hand, so I thought lifting it might be difficult, but they succeeded easily with one hand. They also drew omikuji fortunes. After that, we moved to Kiyomizu-dera, where I explained the difference from Shinto, talked about the Nio guardian statues at the Nio Gate, and headed to the stage. I shared the saying about "jumping off the stage of Kiyomizu," and we entered the main hall to pray before the Kannon. As for the fact that it is built without using any nails, there seem to be similar places in Europe, so they were not too surprised by it. Both guests decided to pass on the water at Otowa Waterfall, so we just looked at it and left Kiyomizu-dera. We then went down Sannenzaka and Ninenzaka. They reacted strongly to the tale that stumbling there could mean bad luck within three or two years, and since it was just after the rain had stopped, both walked carefully. On the slopes, I talked about why pottery flourished in this area. Along the way, as requested, we took photos with the Yasaka Pagoda in the background, and then went to Kodai-ji. At Kodai-ji, I spoke about Hideyoshi and Nene, and we strolled through the temple grounds. Afterward, we got out of the taxi on Gion Shirakawa Street and parted ways. Given that we covered all of this within four hours, I think there were still places they wanted to see, but both guests were very pleased. This time they had left their family in Europe, but they said they would like to visit again together next time.

Through email correspondence beforehand, they had let me know they wished to visit Meiji Shrine, Harajuku, Shibuya, and Asakusa, so the route was confirmed in advance. At Meiji Shrine, they also entered the Inner Garden and enjoyed the grounds. In Harajuku, they strolled along Takeshita Street, Cat Street, and Omotesando and had a wonderful time. In Shibuya, they enjoyed crossing the Scramble Crossing several times and filming videos. We had a relaxed lunch in Shibuya before moving on to Asakusa. They said the ride on the Ginza Line made for a good rest along the way. In Asakusa, they enjoyed Senso-ji Temple and Asakusa Shrine. We then returned to Higashi-Ginza on the Toei Line and finished at the Hotel. A notable stop on the tour was Senso-ji Temple in Asakusa. Senso-ji is Tokyo's oldest temple, founded in the 7th century, and is one of the most visited temples in Japan. Visitors approach the main hall through the Kaminarimon Gate with its enormous red lantern, then walk along Nakamise-dori, a lively shopping street lined with stalls selling traditional snacks and souvenirs. The adjacent Asakusa Shrine, built in the Edo period, honors the founders of the temple and hosts the famous Sanja Matsuri festival each spring, making the area a rich blend of religious history and traditional culture.

I think they were most excited at an apparel shop we stopped by in the Tenmonkan shopping street. They wanted to do more shopping, so we parted ways on site. What Is a Private Day Tour of Kyoto Like? A Licensed Guide's Report on Zen Gardens and Sanjusangendo The guests were visitors from Europe, visiting Japan and Kyoto for the first time. They spent a few days in Tokyo before coming to Kyoto. After enjoying three days in Kyoto, they planned to travel to Hida-Takayama, return to Tokyo, spend a few more days there, and then head home. Since there had been almost no prior communication by email, we decided on the day's destinations first thing in the morning at the hotel. When I asked whether they preferred popular spots or quiet places to relax, the answer was "both!", and so today's itinerary came together in a lively way. They were impressed by the dry landscape garden of a Zen temple, but they said that Sanjusangendo, which we visited last, was very memorable, and on the way out they bought various Sanjusangendo-related goods at the shop. In particular, one of the guests stood still for a while in front of the Kannon Bodhisattva and the twenty-eight guardian deity statues, gazing at them. Since photography was not allowed, they seemed to find that disappointing. Today's guests were, if anything, a bit reserved. Their reactions were subtle even as I gave explanations. At times like this, I don't mind, and in fact I continue explaining calmly all the more with this type of guest. I try to clearly repeat what I want them to take away from my explanations. While quietly observing how they respond, I draw out even more stories from my repertoire than usual. There are moments when anyone might think, "This story is taking time and I'm getting tired, maybe I'll skip it," but guests subtly sense that. So this is where I push on. As I keep at it, at some point during the day, perhaps something gets through — a sense that I am responding earnestly and sincerely — and at a certain moment the guests' atmosphere suddenly changes. Sometimes there are more smiles, sometimes suddenly more questions, sometimes they start telling me all about themselves; it varies, but there is a moment when something shifts. As I like to put it, "Ah, the switch just turned on now." I can hear the sound of the switch clicking on. From there, the atmosphere becomes warm and friendly. Today too, there was such a moment. There is no moment more rewarding for a guide than this. It is not about logic or technique, but rather about one's posture in facing the guests — I face them with all my attention. Today I clearly heard that "click," and it made me happy. It rained, and we skipped lunch. After we said goodbye, they messaged me to say it had been a very interesting day, which made it an even happier day for me. A notable stop on the tour was Sanjusangendo Temple in Kyoto. Sanjusangendo is a Buddhist temple famous for its main hall, the longest wooden structure in Japan, which houses 1,001 statues of the Thousand-Armed Kannon. The name refers to the thirty-three spaces between the pillars of the hall, and the rows of gilded statues, along with the twenty-eight guardian deities, make it one of Kyoto's most striking cultural sites.

Title: What Is a Rainy-Day Private Tour of Hakone Like? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were visitors from Europe. They had finally realized a long-cherished dream of traveling to Japan. After several nights in Tokyo, they were staying in Hakone, and on the first day they enjoyed a fully Japanese atmosphere at a fine ryokan. The previous day it had rained all day and they were unable to go out, so they spent the entire day relaxing in the open-air baths many times. Today it was also raining from the morning, so there was concern about whether the tour could go ahead, but under changeable weather we somehow managed to carry it out. First, we went straight to Hakone Shrine, and since it was early in the morning the precincts were quiet. When I explained about Shinto as an ancient tradition, the influence it had on Japanese culture, and how to worship, the guests seemed deeply impressed and performed the worship carefully. After Hakone they planned to visit Nara, Osaka, Kyoto, and other areas, and they were pleased that this would be helpful as a reference when visiting temples and shrines later. Because of the wind and fog the pirate ship was also suspended, but we waited for it to resume and then headed to Owakudani via Togendai. However, here too, due to thick fog and strong winds, we had to cut things short early. After enjoying the rose garden and the French garden at Gora Park, we then went to the Hakone Open-Air Museum, as one of the guests is fond of art, and there we concluded the tour.

Title: What Can You See on a Private Tokyo Walking Tour? A Licensed Guide's Report on Tsukiji, Yanaka, and Kiyosumi-Shirakawa The guests were a group visiting from North America. When they saw Tsukiji Hongan-ji Temple, one of them remarked that at first glance it looked like a government building. At Iseshin in Yanaka they bought small washi paper items, at Ichifuji in Tsukiji they purchased Japanese tableware, and at Soratsuki they bought strawberry daifuku and other sweets. At an Edo souvenir shop in Kiyosumi-Shirakawa, they bought a black beckoning cat (maneki-neko). One of the guests, on their second visit to Japan, asked me, "Why don't Japanese people drink beverages while walking?" I explained that eating while walking has traditionally been considered bad manners in Japan. Another of the guests commented that "after Japanese people leave a place, it is cleaner than before," and mentioned having seen the behavior of Japanese fans and players at the soccer World Cup. One of the guests asked me, "Are Shinto and Taoism different?" I explained that Taoism is an ancient Chinese religion, while Shinto is a religion unique to Japan. After this, they planned not to visit Kyoto but to go to Osaka instead, having heard that the food in Osaka is even better than in Tokyo. They were especially looking forward to trying okonomiyaki. A notable stop on the tour was Tsukiji Hongan-ji Temple. This Buddhist temple in central Tokyo is well known for its distinctive architecture, which draws on ancient Indian and Asian styles rather than the traditional wooden design of many Japanese temples. Its stone facade and unique domes make it one of the most visually striking religious buildings in the city, and it stands close to the famous Tsukiji Outer Market, a popular destination for fresh seafood and local street food.

What Is a Private Family Tour of Tokyo Like? A Licensed Guide's Report on Harajuku and Meiji Shrine The guests were a family from North America who love Japanese anime and character goods. They had planned this trip and mentioned that the next day they would finally visit the Ghibli Museum in Mitaka with tickets they had managed to obtain. Today was a humid day with temperatures exceeding 30 degrees for the first time in a while, and the strong sunlight was difficult for one of the guests, so I suggested using an umbrella borrowed from the hotel as a parasol, which they seemed to appreciate. What Is a Private Cruise-Port Day Tour of Shibata and Niigata Like? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were a group visiting from Oceania. Since rain was forecast from the afternoon, I wanted to finish any outdoor activities early. However, the sake brewery tour time could not be changed, so we just managed to complete a visit to Shibata Castle in the morning. We had planned to go to "Shimizuen Garden," but I had forgotten that its regular closing day would change to Tuesdays starting in September, so we changed our destination and stopped by the "Shirakabe Heisha Public Relations Museum" at the Ground Self-Defense Force Shibata Garrison. If we had gone to Shimizuen, the rain would have made the footing bad, so this turned out to be just right. At the Shirakabe Heisha Public Relations Museum, actual guns and bombs used in war were on display, which was very surprising. The conversation also developed into topics such as the relationship between Oceania and Japan during World War II. After that, while we were having lunch, the rain gradually became heavier, and the guests' spirits began to drop. Since there was an opinion that they wanted to do ordinary shopping rather than sightseeing, we stopped at a supermarket that had a 100-yen shop inside. Compared to a year ago, Niigata East Port seemed to have settled down considerably in terms of its reception arrangements.

What Does a Private One-Day Tokyo Tour Cover? A Licensed Guide's Report on Asakusa, Tsukiji, and Hamarikyu The guests were a group from Oceania. They had arrived in Japan the day before, and today was their first day of sightseeing in Tokyo. They planned to spend a little over two weeks in Japan, covering most of the major tourist destinations. It was their first visit to Japan. I guided them around Asakusa/Senso-ji Temple, the East Gardens of the Imperial Palace, Tokyo Station (the Marunouchi building), the Tsukiji Outer Market, and Hamarikyu Gardens. They listened attentively to my explanations and asked a wide range of questions. They were both very friendly and clearly enjoyed the day. For lunch, we went to a sushi restaurant in Tsukiji. It was their first time having sushi prepared right in front of them by a chef at the counter, and they told me the sushi melted in the mouth and was delicious. After the meal, a staff member took a commemorative photo including the chef, which they seemed to enjoy very much. At Hamarikyu Gardens, we had matcha and Japanese sweets at the teahouse on the island in the pond, and they were delighted, saying it was the best matcha they had ever tasted. They seemed especially satisfied with the food throughout the day. Since they had a reservation at teamLab Planets after the tour, I finally guided them to the entrance of teamLab Planets in Shin-Toyosu, where the tour concluded.
