They shared that a long-awaited trip to Japan had finally come true using accumulated airline mileage, and that they had arrived the previous night via a route through Asia where flights from Europe were available. Since they would be staying in Tokyo, today we focused on the major highlights of the city. We started at the Tsukiji Outer Market. The guests enjoyed seafood, but as it was just after breakfast, they said they would like to return the following day to eat sushi, so I introduced some recommended spots. After that, at Namiyoke Shrine and Higashi Honganji Temple, I explained the differences between Shinto and Buddhism on-site, and they came to understand them well. They mentioned this would be helpful when visiting shrines and temples later in the Kansai region. At the Imperial Palace, I also explained the differences between the Japanese Emperor and European royal families, and they were impressed by learning something new to them. Finally, in Asakusa, they enjoyed "melon bread" and a "Japanese-style sandwich," and seemed very satisfied with the taste. At the end, I introduced some recommended ramen and yakiniku restaurants near their hotel, doing my best to help them fully enjoy Japanese cuisine in Tokyo.

    Title: What Can You See on a Private Tokyo Day Tour with a Licensed Guide? A Guide's Report Featuring Meiji Shrine, Aoyama, and Takanawa Gateway The guests were visiting Japan for the first time from North America. They had already toured Kyoto and Kanazawa and arrived in Tokyo by Shinkansen. Although they mentioned wanting to keep visits to temples, shrines, and parks to a minimum, when I guided them to Meiji Shrine, they listened to my explanations of the purification fountain and worship at the main hall and experienced these customs anew. Before entering, when I pointed out a cat café visible in the distance in front of Harajuku Station, the guests reacted strongly, so I asked for details and learned that one of the guests loves cats. They shared that they had recently lost a beloved cat that had lived to the age of eighteen, and that they did not feel like getting a new cat for the time being. Afterward, I guided them to Aoyama Cemetery as a place that is not a typical tourist spot. We saw the Hachiko monument and the foreign cemetery section, and with the fine weather, they enjoyed a pleasant stroll. We then walked to the National Art Center and Tokyo Midtown Roppongi. They were looking for chopstick rests as souvenirs, so we visited the Suntory Museum of Art museum shop and The Cover Nippon, but they did not find any favorites. At the dashi shop Kayanoya on the basement floor, I explained about "dashi," and they purchased about three types of freeze-dried miso soup. At a supermarket, I introduced Japanese food ingredients as well as an eat-in space, but they decided on Takanawa Gateway as the place for lunch. We boarded a car at the Midtown driveway next to the entrance of the Ritz-Carlton and headed to Takanawa Gateway. Although we did not enter the JR station platforms, from the ticket gates I explained the advanced technology in use and the station building designed by Kengo Kuma. In the plaza in front of the station, a mobile robot happened to pass by, and they were able to try riding it for a few minutes. Next, we went to the 28th and 29th floors of NEWoMan, a large-scale commercial facility in front of the station. First, they enjoyed the two sky gardens and observation areas. Being fond of plants, the guests were surprised that everything was fresh flowers, especially that the fully bloomed peonies were real and not artificial, remarking that peony flowers are difficult to keep. Mount Fuji was not visible, but they were moved by the beautiful view of the Tokyo Bay side, including the Rainbow Bridge. Every restaurant had a queue, so considering time constraints, I suggested a simple lunch option of buying food from the bakery downstairs and eating it at a table in the free space, and they agreed. We went down to the second floor and each chose their preferred bread at the Vermicular bakery. Along with juice, we ate and chatted in the free space. I received questions about Japanese values and standard of living, prompted by having seen a foreign visitor at the hotel change out of a very short skirt after receiving some advice from hotel staff, and I answered within the scope of my understanding. Since this simple lunch left us a little ahead of schedule, after consulting with the guests, we enjoyed a drive viewing the Ginza area from the car and then returned to the hotel in Shibuya.

    • Picked up at Windam Garden Sapporo Odori (hotel). Strolled from Odori Park Block 7 to Block 1. Since the Lilac Festival was starting the next day, they were preparing the food stalls. However, the lilacs had begun to bloom (reddish-purple, bluish-purple, white, etc.). We also took many photos of tulips, azaleas, lily of the valley, and more. As they wished to climb to the top of the TV Tower, the guide accompanied them. It was slightly cloudy, but they enjoyed the panoramic view. After that, we guided them to the Clock Tower, the former Hokkaido Government Office, and its front garden. In the afternoon, we guided them to the Sapporo Beer Museum.

    Title: What Is a Private Walking Tour of Sapporo Like? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were visiting from Oceania. They mentioned it was their first time visiting Hokkaido. While strolling through Odori Park, they gazed with great fascination at the plants that caught their eye. They paid close attention not only to the flowers in the flower beds but also to trees estimated to be around 80 to 100 years old. I handed out a small booklet (6 pages) that I had made myself and explained the location and climate of Hokkaido and Sapporo. While talking about their home region, they cheerfully shared that they have a swimming pool at home and often swim during the warmer months.

    Title: What Is a Private Day Trip to Hakone from Tokyo Like? A Licensed Guide's Report on Mount Fuji, Owakudani, and Lake Ashi The guests were friends visiting Japan for the second time, arriving from North America. Both mentioned that they had some physical discomfort and found it difficult to walk at a fast pace, so the tour was paced accordingly. This time, they were on a longer trip that included two days in Tokyo (with a visit to Hakone), after which they planned to board a cruise ship departing from the Tokyo International Cruise Terminal. The cruise would sail from Hokkaido along the Sea of Japan coast, stopping in Asia before disembarking, from where they planned to fly home. They told me, "We really wanted to see Mount Fuji from Hakone." In Tokyo, they stayed at a Hotel. Although there were clouds gathering, we were able to enjoy a beautiful view of Mount Fuji. The guests traveled from Tokyo to Odawara by Shinkansen, and we met at the Shinkansen gate of Odawara Station. We then took the Hakone Tozan Railway, cable car, and ropeway, passing through Sounzan to reach Owakudani. I explained "the formation of Hakone" and "the overview and history of Owakudani." There were questions such as, "Is Owakudani an active volcano? Has it ever erupted?" and "Is Mount Fuji also an active volcano? When did it erupt?" We purchased and tasted the famous "black eggs." One comment was, "The smell of sulfur is incredible." From there, we took the ropeway to Togendai. After a short wait, we boarded the "pirate ship." The interior was almost full, including many overseas visitors. There were questions such as, "How deep is Lake Ashi? What is the water temperature?" "Can you swim in it?" and "Can you fish there?" We went to Moto-Hakone and walked to Hakone Shrine. I explained "the history of Hakone Shrine." We returned to Moto-Hakone Port and took a short break. After that, we took the Hakone Tozan Bus and Hakone Tozan Railway to the Hakone Open-Air Museum. I explained "the origins and current state of the Open-Air Museum." We took a leisurely stroll through the grounds. At the gift shop, they purchased a "towel" as a souvenir. "It is a very calm and beautiful garden," they said. We then took the Hakone Tozan Railway to Odawara via Hakone-Yumoto. There were also comments such as, "Everywhere in Japan the towns are clean. There is no litter on the ground," "Everyone is so polite," and "Hakone suits us better than Tokyo." We parted ways at the Shinkansen entrance of Odawara Station.

    In the past, I was stationed in Canada, the United States, and Mexico as an expatriate of a Japanese bank for over 11 years.

A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were visitors from North America who had previously visited Koyasan and Kyoto some years earlier, and had returned to Japan for a special commemorative trip. They had been deeply moved by the atmosphere of Koyasan on their earlier visit, and during this stay they wished to learn about the process of enshrining ashes at Koyasan. Both had been studying Japanese and planned to experience calligraphy during their stay in Kanazawa. As they had also done some research into Japanese history, it turned out to be a very enjoyable tour.

    Title: What's a Private Fuji and Hakone Day Tour Like? A Licensed Guide's Report The guest wished to avoid walking as much as possible, so we planned accordingly. Fortunately, even on a crowded bus where seating is usually hard to secure, we were able to reserve a seat, which allowed us to start smoothly. Next, the guest hoped to photograph Mount Fuji with the red torii gate in the background, and we managed to make that happen as well. Having finally fulfilled this long-held wish, the guest seemed greatly relieved, and afterward relaxed and took various photos. We also arranged a vegetarian meal for the guest. At the restaurant, I asked the staff to reserve a seat with a view of Mount Fuji, and they kindly held one for us. The fresh green foliage was magnificent, and just like the guests the previous day, the guest was thoroughly impressed. Trying the black eggs for the first time, the guest found them even more delicious than expected and finished them in no time.

    Title: Can a Licensed Guide Handle Suica, JR Pass, and Shinkansen Bookings? A Private Tokyo Day Tour Report The guests were a group visiting Japan for the first time from Oceania. The night before, they arrived at Narita Airport and took a taxi to their hotel. However, because the flight was delayed and customs at the airport was crowded and time-consuming, they did not reach the hotel until 21:00 and were tired. The purpose of this trip was a 14-day stay in Japan. After staying in Tokyo, they planned to visit Hakone, Hida-Takayama, Kanazawa, Kyoto, and Osaka, then depart from Kansai Airport. The previous night, they rested at the hotel. Their wish for today was to explore the main sights of central Tokyo and get a sense of how the transportation system works. They also mentioned that their travel agency had asked the guide to help with "purchasing the Welcome Suica Card," "activating the JR Pass," and "reserving Shinkansen and other trains." It was a tour under clear skies, with weather warm enough to feel hot. First, we went to the Ekitabi Concierge at the south exit of Shinjuku Station and took our time to complete the procedures. After that, we moved to Asakusa. Starting from the front of Kaminarimon Gate, I explained "Sensoji Temple and the history from Edo to Tokyo," "what the five-story pagoda is for," "what Buddhism is," and "the difference between Buddhism and Shinto." We took commemorative photos at Kaminarimon and various spots, and strolled slowly through the crowded Nakamise shopping street. There were questions such as "What are the main religions in Japan?", "How many Buddhists are there in Japan?", and "Besides Buddhism, what other religions do people follow?" There was also a question about "Why do we see people wearing kimono within the temple grounds?" From here, we went to Tsukiji, which was as crowded as ever. I explained "the history of the fish market since the Edo period" and "the difference between Toyosu Market and the Tsukiji Outer Market." There were questions and comments such as "Do all Tokyo residents come here to buy fish?" and "It's crowded, but it does seem like there are many tourists." They said they wanted to try something, and in the end they bought and sampled "strawberries" and "matcha soft serve." We moved to Harajuku. Meiji Shrine was quite crowded with tourists. I explained "about Shinto," "about torii gates," "about Emperor Meiji," "why sake barrels are displayed," and "why wine barrels are displayed." There were questions such as "What kind of religion is Shinto?" and "How do Buddhism and Shinto differ?" We took a short break at Forest Terrace Meiji Jingu. We moved to Shibuya. Looking at Scramble Square, there were questions such as "About how many people cross at once?" and "Why did it become famous?" Here too, we crossed the scramble intersection, and took photos in front of the Hachiko statue. There were comments and questions such as "I don't understand why the city is so clean with no litter," "There are no trash cans on the streets—why?", and "Everyone is quiet on the trains." We saw them off at Shinjuku Station and parted ways.

    In the past, I was stationed in Canada, the United States, and Mexico as an expatriate of a Japanese bank for over 11 years.
    Since I have been mainly involved in the financing business in the United States for a long time, I think I am able to provide interpretation and translation services related to business and finance.
    I am a certified CPA in the United States.
    In addition, for three years from April 2016, I will be engaged in Japanese-English translation work (part-time), and I can also handle translation work.
    Although I don’t have a qualification in Spanish, but I think I can handle day to day conversation in Spanish without any problems.
    My hobby is trekking and from time to time, take a walk around mountains near Tokyo like Mt. Takao, Tanzawa, etc. I think it is possible to provide tourist information here as well.
    Since April 2015, I have been working as a Tokyo Metropolitan Tourism Volunteer and Tokyo Metropolitan Disaster Prevention Volunteer.
    One more, I have a separate house near Asuka Village, Nara prefecture, and I stay there for a total of about 30 days every year and have been enjoying sightseeing personally in the vicinity. Therefore, I think in the Kansai region, especially in Nara, Asuka, Yoshino, Koyasan, Kumano Kodo, etc., where I think I will be able to tour guide with confidence.

They had come from Osaka and were planning to return home the next day. Rain was forecast for the day, but it did not rain during the tour, and Itsukushima Shrine was quiet, making it easy to take photos, which the guests were very happy about. There appeared to have been a fire at Reikado Hall, and we could see smoke rising from the mountain on the ferry going over, and there were announcements, which was a bit worrying, but I am relieved that we were able to finish safely. The guests very much enjoyed shopping at the Omotesando shopping street. The Peace Memorial Museum was crowded with a school group, so I guided them through the key points in a focused way. We went around the monuments in the Peace Park, and I showed them the streetcar to Hiroshima Station before saying goodbye.
