    Title: What's a Private Day Tour of Nara Like? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests today were a group visiting from Oceania. They had visited Osaka and Hiroshima, came to Nara today, and planned to continue on to Kyoto, Tokyo, and Sapporo. Today it was drizzly and cloudy, which made it pleasant and not too hot. As expected, there were many students on school trips and field excursions, so we walked a route starting from the less crowded Kasuga Taisha Shrine. The guests seemed very interested in Japanese culture at both Kasuga Taisha Shrine and Todaiji Temple. To avoid the crowds, I think it worked well that we had an early lunch at the Emado Chaya teahouse near Todaiji Temple. The guests enjoyed the garden at Isuien, and at Naramachi Nigiwai no Ie they learned about traditional Japanese houses, which I believe they found enjoyable.

    Can You Do a Private One-Day Tour of Tokyo Before a Group Trip Across Japan? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were visitors from North America, and this was their first trip to Japan. They had arrived at Narita Airport the previous evening and taken a taxi to their hotel. The purpose of their visit was to join a 12-day group tour of Japan (about 100 participants) starting the day after next, traveling from Tokyo to Kyoto, Osaka, Nara, and Hiroshima before returning to Tokyo and heading home. The guests had come to Japan ahead of this and planned to spend two days in Tokyo. For today, they said they wanted to visit the main spots in the city and get a sense of the transportation situation. The guests could only walk slowly and stairs were not possible, so we moved at a slow pace throughout. It was a tour under clear skies, in weather almost hot. First, we went to Tsukiji. Even though it was a closed day, it was as crowded as ever. I explained the history of the fish market since the Edo period and the difference between Toyosu Market and the Tsukiji Outer Market. There were questions and comments such as "Do all Tokyo residents come here to buy fish?" and "It's crowded, but it seems like there are a lot of tourists." They said they wanted to try some food, and ended up buying and sampling strawberries and matcha soft serve. They also bought dried soybeans as a souvenir. They further requested to see a Japanese Catholic church, so we walked to Tsukiji Catholic Church. There were many questions about the history of Christianity in Japan. After this, they said they were a little tired, so we took a lunch break at a café. We then moved to Asakusa. Starting from the front of Kaminarimon Gate, I explained the history of Sensoji Temple and the transition from Edo to Tokyo, the purpose of the five-story pagoda, what Buddhism is, and the difference between Buddhism and Shinto. We took commemorative photos at Kaminarimon and various spots, and slowly strolled along the crowded Nakamise shopping street. There were questions such as "What are the main religions in Japan?", "How many Buddhists are there in Japan?", and "Besides Buddhism, what other religions do people follow?" There was also a question about why women wearing kimono could be seen within the temple grounds. We moved to Ryogoku, as one of the guests wanted to learn about Japanese sumo. We viewed the Ryogoku Kokugikan from outside and went to Ryogoku Edo Noren. I explained the history of sumo, the rules of sumo, about sumo stables, and the daily life of sumo wrestlers. There were questions such as "At what age can one become a sumo wrestler?", "How much do sumo wrestlers weigh?", and "How much annual income do they earn?" On the train, the guests were offered seats several times, and they remarked that Japanese people are kind. There were also comments and questions such as "We can't understand why the city is so clean with no litter on the ground," "There are no trash cans in the city. Why?", and "Is it okay to drink beverages on the train?" I saw them off at Daiba Station, where we parted ways.

    Self-introduction:
    In the past, I was stationed in Canada, the United States, and Mexico as an expatriate of a Japanese bank for over 11 years.
    Since I have been mainly involved in the financing business in the United States for a long time, I think I am able to provide interpretation and translation services related to business and finance.
    I am a certified CPA in the United States.
    In addition, for three years from April 2016, I will be engaged in Japanese-English translation work (part-time), and I can also handle translation work.
    Although I don’t have a qualification in Spanish, but I think I can handle day to day conversation in Spanish without any problems.
    My hobby is trekking and from time to time, take a walk around mountains near Tokyo like Mt. Takao, Tanzawa, etc. I think it is possible to provide tourist information here as well.
    Since April 2015, I have been working as a Tokyo Metropolitan Tourism Volunteer and Tokyo Metropolitan Disaster Prevention Volunteer.
    One more, I have a separate house near Asuka Village, Nara prefecture, and I stay there for a total of about 30 days every year and have been enjoying sightseeing personally in the vicinity. Therefore, I think in the Kansai region, especially in Nara, Asuka, Yoshino, Koyasan, Kumano Kodo, etc., where I think I will be able to tour guide with confidence.

    What Is a Private Kyoto Day Tour to Arashiyama and Fushimi Inari Like? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests enjoyed the tour cheerfully from beginning to end. In Arashiyama, the guests were very fond of the scenery of the bamboo grove and took many photos. They also enjoyed matcha sweets and tea, and seemed to fully appreciate the Japanese atmosphere. The guests were also interested in shopping at the souvenir shops. At Fushimi Inari Taisha, the guests listened with great interest to the story of the "Fox Gods" and took many group photos at the Senbon Torii (Thousand Torii Gates). It appeared to be a wonderful memory for them. For lunch, the guests enjoyed ramen and were pleased with the Japanese food experience. I am also sincerely grateful that they joined me for lunch and treated me. Thank you very much for kindly cooperating with the group photo taken for PR purposes. The tour proceeded in a warm atmosphere throughout and concluded smoothly and on time. There were no particular problems or troubles.

    Title: What Is a Private One-Day Nara Tour Like? A Licensed Guide's Report on Todai-ji, Nara Park, and Kasuga Taisha The guests this time were visitors from Europe who were sightseeing in Japan. For prior arrangements such as coordinating the destinations, I communicated with one of the guests. Since it was their first visit to Japan, they said they would leave the Nara itinerary entirely to me as their guide, so I proposed the classic route of "Kofuku-ji ⇒ Nara Park ⇒ lunch ⇒ Todai-ji ⇒ Kasuga Taisha," and after obtaining their agreement, we finalized it. Their interests in sightseeing in Japan were history, society, and nature, and I was confident that the ancient capital of Nara could provide sightseeing well suited to those interests. On the day of the tour, according to the weather forecast, there would be some sunshine in the morning, but a high chance of rain in the late afternoon, so I was prepared to be caught in the rain during the latter half. Fortunately, we did not encounter rain until the very end, and we were able to proceed smoothly through the itinerary. However, about 30 minutes before I arrived at Kintetsu Nara Station, a message came in from the guests saying, "We caught an earlier train, so we will arrive in Nara about 30 minutes ahead of schedule—will pickup be alright?" It was my first experience of guests arriving earlier than planned, but since I usually arrive at the meeting point 30 minutes early, I told the guests, "I will actually arrive in Nara about 5 minutes earlier than you, so I will be waiting at the ticket gate. There is no problem at all." Five minutes after the train arrived, I met the guests safely at the ticket gate exit. We did a brief self-introduction and confirmed the itinerary. Since the start ended up being moved up by 30 minutes, we confirmed that we would follow the planned route and also finish 30 minutes earlier. Because the destinations were Buddhist temples (Kofuku-ji, Todai-ji) and a shrine (Kasuga Taisha), I explained in detail the history and relationship between Shinto and Buddhism. The guests listened intently to my explanations and deepened their understanding by asking many questions along the way. In addition to the history and culture of ancient Japan, the guests also seemed to greatly enjoy the nature of Nara, with its fresh greenery in full flush. Furthermore, one of the guests showed a strong interest in the Japanese language and asked for detailed explanations about the origins of kanji, katakana, and hiragana. Finally, an episode related to lunch. On this day, in addition to the usual foreign tourists, Nara City was overflowing with students on school trips and excursions from elementary, junior high, and high schools. Under these circumstances, it was expected that ordinary restaurants would involve considerable waiting. So I remembered that there is a staff cafeteria (6th floor) at the Nara Prefectural Government Office, quite close to Todai-ji. When I proposed, "There is a staff cafeteria on the top floor of the prefectural office where the general public can also dine—how about it?" the guests eagerly agreed, saying "This is a rare experience," and it was decided immediately. All three of us chose the "shabu-shabu pork salad set meal" (750 yen). With quick service and no waiting time, both the guests and I were very satisfied with lunch at a spot with a great view. The guests, being curious, cheerful, and talkative, made for a very enjoyable tour. That is all.

At Nijo Castle, they were impressed by the Karamon Gate, the Ninomaru Palace, the Grand Hall, and the painted sliding doors and carved transoms. We also discussed the history of the Warring States period, the Edo period, and the return of political power to the Emperor. At Fushimi Inari, they marveled at the vermilion Senbon Torii and wrote their wishes on gomagi prayer sticks. At Sanjusangendo, they were amazed by the 1,001 statues of the thousand-armed Kannon Bodhisattva and the majestic altar of the 28 guardian deities. At Shorenin, they gazed at the garden, enjoyed the tranquility and gentle breeze, and relaxed. Finally, they rang the bell at the bell tower and joined their hands in prayer.

    Title: What's a Private One-Day Tour of Tokyo Like? A Licensed Guide's Report on Meiji Shrine, Shibuya, and Shinjuku Gyoen The guests were a group visiting Japan from North America. This was a repeat visit to Japan for one of the guests. Before Tokyo, they had already traveled to Osaka, Kyoto, and the Mount Fuji area, with Tokyo being their final destination. We first visited Meiji Shrine. They said the forest and buildings of Meiji Shrine were very beautiful and that they loved places like this. After that, we took photos at the Shibuya Crossing and the Hachiko statue, then went up to Shibuya Sky. The weather was very nice that day and it was quite crowded. We then walked through Golden Gai, and they were very surprised to find such an area in the middle of the city. For lunch we had shabu-shabu and sukiyaki, followed by ice cream for dessert. They enjoyed the meal very much and said it was delicious. We then walked to Shinjuku Gyoen. We first strolled through the Japanese garden, then visited the rose garden in the formal garden area. The roses happened to be in bloom and were beautiful. We ended the tour at Shinjuku Gyoen. The weather was very nice, and I believe they enjoyed the day.

    What's a Private Miyajima and Itsukushima Shrine Tour Like? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were visitors from North America. Some of the guests had relatives in Hiroshima and were planning to meet them both the day before and after the tour, while others had relatives in Okinawa, and they mentioned that they had visited Japan several times before. The day before, they had gone to watch a Carp baseball game, and we had a lively conversation about the Carp during the transfers. Although rain had been forecast, there were sunny spells during the morning when we did the tour, and the guests were delighted with the beautiful scenery. There were also several groups of school trip students, but the timing was good, and we were able to visit both Itsukushima Shrine and Daishoin without crowds, so the guests were very pleased with the views. For lunch, they wanted to try anago (conger eel), so at a Japanese restaurant they had anago rice bowls and soba noodles, and they told me "Oishii!" (delicious) in Japanese. In the afternoon, they planned to visit the Peace Park and have a meal with their relatives, so after looking together for a souvenir, I guided them to the boarding point for the World Heritage Sea Route, which I had reserved in advance based on their prior request, and then ended the tour. They were very pleased, and I even received a polite thank-you message after the tour. They were wonderful guests, the conversation flowed well, and it turned out to be a very enjoyable tour for me as well.

    The guest was a visitor from Europe on their first trip to Japan. After sightseeing in Tokyo, the guest planned to visit Takayama, Kanazawa, Kyoto, Osaka, and Hiroshima. At Meiji Shrine, the guest seemed impressed by the quiet and solemn atmosphere, which was very different from nearby Shibuya. At the Imperial Palace, the guest listened with great interest to historical explanations about the role of the Emperor, the Meiji Restoration, and the Edo Shogunate. At Senso-ji Temple, the guest was intrigued by explanations of the differences between temples and shrines, as well as the Kaminarimon Gate. In Akihabara, the guest showed interest in anime shops. Since I responded according to the guest's wishes, I believe they were satisfied.

    What Does an Off-the-Beaten-Path Private Tour of Tokyo Look Like? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were a group visiting from North America. They had arrived in Japan the day before, and after Tokyo they planned to visit Kobe, Kyoto, and other places before returning to Tokyo to meet up with other members of their family and continue sightseeing. For this tour, I received a request that was quite different from the usual. They said they could visit the sightseeing spots listed in guidebooks on their own, and told me: "What we would like from you is to see places most tourists don't see, places that are not in all the tourist guidebooks. We are more interested in seeing how people live. We would like to lunch at a restaurant at which local people eat. See a neighborhood library." When I received this request by email, I thought for a moment about how to respond, but I concluded it would be good to show them the kinds of places I usually go shopping near my own neighborhood, and I proposed that. They replied that this would be fine, so I guided them along a route covering the Ikejiri-Ohashi area near my home and neighboring Sangenjaya. After meeting up, I showed them a grocery supermarket and a library I normally visit in Ikejiri-Ohashi, as well as the nearby Meguro Sky Garden, and then went to Chojuan, a soba restaurant in the Ikejiri-Ohashi shopping street. Everyone else there was a local resident, and the guests were delighted to have lunch at exactly the kind of place they had hoped for. After that we went to Sangenjaya, where they enjoyed the view from the observation lobby of Carrot Tower, and then visited several commercial facilities. Finally, I showed them the izakaya and other spots in the alleys of Sancha San-bangai, which has a nostalgic Showa-era atmosphere. Overall it seemed to be just what they had wanted, and they told me they were very happy to have been able to see places that tourists don't normally see. Although we finished earlier than scheduled, they said it was fine to end the tour, so we returned to the Hotel and parted ways there.
