What's a 4-Hour Private Tour of Matsushima and Shiogama from Sendai Like? A Licensed Guide's Report
The guests were a group visiting Japan for the first time. Arriving in Sendai just before noon on the Shinkansen from Tokyo has become a noticeable pattern recently. Since their wishes were a Matsushima sightseeing cruise plus a temple and a shrine, I checked the train times and decided it would be better to get off at Hon-Shiogama and take the Shiogama–Matsushima cruise. We made the 14:00 boat. Because the train timing was tight, I had asked the guests to arrive two or three minutes early. However, one of the guests had forgotten their Suica, so we suddenly had to run to the ticket counter and just barely made the train. It is a 10-minute walk from the station to the Shiogama boat dock. I thought we could make it even walking in a relaxed way, but with a detour to buy coffee and so on, the boarding time again became very tight. There seemed to be many things that caught their attention along the way. The Shiogama cruise, the Basho course, is recommended because cargo ships pass by close up and you can see islands up close that cannot be seen from boats departing from Matsushima. Recently, footage of a Japanese group enjoying the Matsushima cruise on this course became popular in places like Asia, and the Shiogama course has become crowded with visitors too. The guests came out from the lively cabin and enjoyed the cruise from the deck. I stayed in the cabin watching the luggage. After disembarking, I asked again whether to focus only on Matsushima or also see Shiogama Shrine, and since they wanted to see Zuiganji briefly and also visit a Shinto shrine, we decided to head to Shiogama Shrine. With a 4-hour tour, adding a stop at Shiogama after the Matsushima cruise was tight, but the guests enjoyed taking photos of the garden and so on. They asked detailed questions about the differences between Buddhism and Shinto. Time ran short at Zuiganji, but I had decided to at least see them off to Sendai. Just before boarding the train, they once again stopped at a food stall, which made me anxious, but somehow we caught the train and headed to Shiogama Shrine. I debated whether to use taxis, but since it would require two cars for five plus one (myself), and the guests said they were used to slopes from having walked pilgrimage routes in Europe with many uphill climbs, they took on the easiest sloped approach path. In the precincts they came across a family celebrating a naming ceremony and a purification ritual, which they found very interesting. Shiogama Shrine is the first shrine of the Oshu region and quite large in scale, and perhaps drawn by the beauty of the buildings, time ran short here as well. Keeping it within 4 hours is quite difficult. On the way back, they asked about other places they wanted to visit, such as the Sendai Daikannon and a nearby day-trip hot spring facility, so I sent the information and directions via a messaging app. Since they said they would visit the Sendai Daikannon after the tour, I told them that the Daikannon closes at 3 and could only be seen from the outside, and they said that was fine, so I am not sure whether they went afterward. The guests seemed to be aware of the tour time, and they said, "We can get back on our own, so get off wherever is convenient for you," and we parted ways in the car. The next day they were going to Yamadera in Yamagata. They were a very energetic group.

Riko-san is the best guide!
I originally booked with TripAdvisor, but cancelled it in order to get a longer tour–8 hours instead of 6. Riko-san was our guide, and she was very knowledgeable about the Sendai/Matsushima area and the attractions we visited. She was also flexible with times and at the end of a long day she even shared the location of her favorite sushi restaurant! Riko-san also helped us locate a guide for our izakaya tour. She went above and beyond the definition of service. We’d love to book with her and her izakaya friend, Mai, again!

GO WITH “RIKO” FROM JAPAN GUIDE AGENCY
This is our first time to Japan, and it can be very confusing but we went with Riko from Japan Guide Agency, and this made this the easiest day possible. We came from North Carolina to Tokyo and now our adventure starts in Sendai after our visit in Tokyo. We wanted a guide to help us navigate this area and we were lucky enough to be assigned “Riko” for the half day. The moment we met her my wife and I were thrilled to be spending a day with her. She speaks wonderful English and with my horrible hearing, I could hear her clearly which makes it so enjoyable. I normally cannot hear soft Japanese voices but she made it so easy for us to hear and understand. We spent the day with her and yes we were tired at the end but it was so worth it to stick it out all day. One of the best things about Riko is; she meets you at your hotel and returns you to your hotel when you are so tired you cannot possibly take another step. Another amazing thing about Riko is she knows the trains and knows how to get the client moved around quickly and efficiently. We had no idea where to go to get the right trains but Riko make it smooth as possible. It was raining all day but we pushed through and that caused all the tourists to not be at the stops we were going to. It was like the shut down the area for us. Since it was raining, Riko would call taxi’s for us and they came almost immediately. Riko is a wealth of information and we even met some of her friends along the way. If you are going to book a tour with this firm, ASK FOR RIKO, I know you will have a great day.

Viator review: Sendai / Matsushima Full-Day Private Tour with Government-Licensed Guide
Riko was our guide for the full-day tour. After we selected the sites we wanted to visit, Riko provided us with a detailed itinerary. Her communication throughout the planning process was clear and thorough, including explanations of the expected admission fees and transportation costs for the day. Our itinerary included visits to Entsu-in Temple, a scenic cruise on Matsushima Bay, and a tour of Zuigan-ji Temple. Riko accompanied us on both the train and ferry, which made it easy for us to relax and fully enjoy each sight without worrying about logistics or directions. In addition to guiding us through the main attractions, Riko went above and beyond by arranging for us to have lunch at a vegan restaurant in Sendai. This thoughtful addition was not part of the original tour, yet it greatly enhanced our overall experience.
