Can You Do a Private Day Trip Through Tokyo Visiting Asakusa, the East Gardens, and Meiji Shrine? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were a group visiting from Oceania. Before the tour, one of the guests had shared details about the group in an email, which made communication easy from the start and was very helpful. Because their accommodation was located right behind Senso-ji Temple, we were able to visit the temple in the morning and avoid the crowds. At the East Gardens, the group did some shopping, so we spent a little more time there than usual. The restaurant I chose for lunch was a real find on this occasion. Despite the crowds at Meiji Shrine, this restaurant located within the same grounds had plenty of seats available and was uncrowded, and I felt it would be useful going forward, especially when guiding larger groups. Although the tour included many stops, the group was able to move at a brisk pace, so I rarely had to worry about time. At the end, I introduced some recommended shops around Nakamise Street before seeing the guests back to their accommodation, ending the tour. This private tour was arranged through [Japan Guide Agency (JGA Inc.)](https://www.j-g-a.org/), one of Japan's largest networks of government-licensed, English-speaking private tour guides, serving all 47 prefectures.

Hi. My name is Masafumi Miyazaki. Please call me “Sam”. I am a government-licensed guide.
I was born in Tokyo and was raised in the suburbs of Tokyo called Tama area. When I was in university, I majored in western dramas, so I am good at playing like an actor.
I like reading, listening to the music, and walking. I belong to several walking clubs, and sometimes I guide the members around Tokyo.
One of my strengths as a guide is that I know well about kombu, Japanese kelps. In December every year, I work at a traditional kombu shop in Tsukiji Fish Market. At that shop, I learned a lot of things related to kombu or other ingredients for washoku. I can explain the different characteristics of them to you.
Also, I am familiar with Japanese flowers and plants. If you stroll around a Japanese garden with me, I am sure you will be able to enjoy beautiful flowers and unique plants in every season.
I look forward to meeting you. Thank you.

Title: What Is a Private Full-Day Kyoto Tour Like for First-Time Visitors? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were a group visiting from North America. Some of the guests had been to Japan many times, while others were visiting for the first time. Everyone showed great interest in Japan's religion, customs, and history, so I gave an orientation on the history of Kyoto first thing in the morning, and the questions kept coming one after another. We began with the very basics — what Shinto is and what people do day to day, what Buddhism is and what is practiced within it, and how the two differ — and then moved on to the syncretism of Shinto and Buddhism, Shichi-Go-San, traditional Japanese clothing, and hanging scrolls, so it was already past 10:00 by the time we finally left the Hotel. During the drive, our conversation turned to politics and economics. There were also many topics related to healthcare, and we had a lively discussion about "good for the body" subjects such as Japanese cuisine, kaiseki, ichiju-sansai (one soup and three sides), the microbiome, and Blue Zones. Lunch was, of course, gluten-free. Since we were able to focus on the conversation today, I felt the chartered taxi was a great choice.

Hello, this is Kazu Akiyama, your tour guide. Nice to meet you and welcome to Japan. Thank you for joining me on the tour. Now I am a retired salaried worker, living in Osaka. I have been very much interested in not only learning Japanese history, culture, religion myself, but also talking about them (sometimes going off topics) in English with tourists from all over the world as well. I am so excited being with you as your guide on coming day! I am very much looking forward to you enjoying with me visiting the must-see places and some of the hidden gems. See you soon. Thank you – Kazu Akiyama

Title: What Is a Private Osaka Day Tour Like? A Licensed Guide's Report on Umeda Sky Building and Dotonbori Body: Even though I notified the guests by both email and messaging app that I would be waiting on the 15th floor, since the lobby of the Hotel is on the 15th floor, neither message was seen and they went all the way down to the 1st floor. About 10 minutes later they finally noticed the email and came back up to the 15th floor, so we were able to meet without any further trouble. In what was the coldest weather of the year so far, we visited the observation deck of the Umeda Sky Building. Although the Sky Building has the drawback of requiring quite a long walk from the station, the guests were very pleased with the wonderful view and the Showa-retro alley in the basement. They thanked me for bringing them to such a lovely place. We also climbed up to the main keep of Osaka Castle, but the guests seemed quite tired, as they had walked around the city until late the previous day on a food tour. As soon as we arrived at Dotonbori from Ebisubashi-suji, they said they wanted to sit down and eat sushi, so I took them to a sushi restaurant. Even though they ate a lot, after lunch, while I looked away for a moment, they bought some takoyaki, which was not hot at all and tasted very poor. If I had stayed by their side, such a disappointing thing would not have happened, so I reflected that I need to check the guests' wishes more carefully going forward. After showing them Hozenji Temple, I took them back to their Hotel, and they seemed relieved.

Hi! My name is YUKA. I’ve got the government license in 2018 and joined a half year traning to do the guide. But a half year later I started my carreer, Covid came. I should have given up guiding. During the Covid, I’ve read many books and made my own materials to explain Japanese culture, history, etc. I love guiding because the guests expand my horizon all the time and let me know their own country and culture, etc. It is really important for us all to know each other and respect each other to make this world peace. Thank you for coming to Japan! Let’s enjoy Japan together!

    • 13:10-14:00 Entered Shinjuku Gyoen through the Shinjuku Gate and guided them through the Japanese garden.

What Is a Private One-Day Tokyo Tour Like? A Licensed Guide's Report on Asakusa, Ramen, and Matcha The guests were a group visiting from North America. They had first visited Kyoto, then traveled to Shanghai, and arrived in Tokyo in January, where I guided them on a Tokyo tour the following day. In addition to their native Spanish, all of them spoke English fluently, so I was able to guide them without any language barrier. As is often the case, the group got along wonderfully, which made guiding them a very pleasant experience. Everyone in the group had watched the TV drama "Shogun," which recently won Emmy and Golden Globe awards, and they asked me many questions about Japanese history, which made the tour flow smoothly and was much appreciated. For lunch they requested something light, and since they had not yet tried ramen, I took them to a Kumamoto-style ramen shop in Shinjuku Sanchome. All of them loved it, finished every bowl, and were delighted. When I take guests from North America to tonkotsu ramen, they are always thrilled for some reason. They ordered the spicy version, and I was reassured when some of the guests started eating and exclaimed, "This is delicious!" Everyone was a big fan of matcha and wanted to have some somewhere, so I took them to a shop in Asakusa. This was another great hit — they each had two matcha lattes, ordering seconds, and every one of them also had matcha soft-serve ice cream, which left me astonished. Still, they were very happy, so it worked out well. In that pleasant atmosphere, dusk fell, and they enjoyed the illuminated Senso-ji Temple and the Tokyo Skytree. Finally, they said, "We'll explore around here on our own, so let's say goodbye here," and the tour concluded. They were simply a delightful group who made me feel happy as well. They told me they had a wonderful time, so I said goodbye with peace of mind.

I acquired national guide license in 2014, and I have been doing guide work full fledged since 2016. In my career before starting guide work, I was a business man and made more than 1,000 business trips both abroad and in Japan, and that experience is my foundation as a guide because I came to know so many places both abroad and in Japan. I have been taking care of both group and individual tourists, and the number of foreign guests I have taken care is close to 2,500 so far. I am based in Tokyo, but I can cover guide work in many prefectures throughout Japan. When I take care of foreign guests, my major concern is to listen attentively to them, find out what they want to know and do in Japan, and give them appropriate guiding in accordance with what I heard from my guests. I would like to provide tailor made tour as much as possible for every precious guest who kindly chose Japan as the tour destination.

Title: What's a Private Himeji Castle Walking Tour Like? A Licensed Guide's Report We were able to meet as scheduled at the central ticket gate of JR Himeji Station and headed toward Himeji Castle along Otemae Street. The guests showed great interest in my explanation of the layout of the outer moat surrounding the entire Himeji castle town. After entering the current main gate, we looked at illustrations of the former mansions and the palace of the honmaru that once stood there. Since the guests had visited Nijo Castle in Kyoto, I explained that the buildings had been like smaller versions of the Ninomaru Palace and Honmaru Palace of Nijo Castle, and the guests were delighted, saying that this helped them picture the central buildings of the castle. Looking at the plan of the inner moat area on the Sannomaru Plaza and the bird's-eye view of the inner moat area beside the Hishinomon Gate, they seemed amazed at what the buildings inside the inner moat had contained, remarking that even the surviving mountainside structures alone were overwhelming. At Koko-en Garden, the autumn leaves were late this year and were still enjoyable, and they were pleased with the beautiful koi in the pond, saying we had been lucky. They also enjoyed the 3D trick art painting on Miyuki Street, which became one of their favorites, and had fun taking photos of it. After finishing at Koko-en Garden, the tour concluded, and on the way back to the station the guests wished to stroll around on their own, so we parted ways.

I am Hiromi Mizoi, call me Hiro. I mainly have Himeji tours because I live in Himeji. I got my National Guide Certificate in 2017. I started to guide tourists as a volunteer guide in 2004. I had been a volunteer guide for a long time. However, I could not have any tours from April in 2020 to November in 2022 due to the Covid-19 Pandemic. Now, many tourists have come back to Japan. So, I am very excited. I would like to share not only the beauty of Himeji Castle’s Main Tower Complex but also the tricky defense systems of the entire Castle Grounds, which many visitors do not realize, with you. I was born and grew up very close to the west side of the moats of the Castle. So, I love Himeji Castle. I like other tourists’ favorite sightseeing spots such as Kokoen Garden and Engyoji Temple in Mt. Shosya. As one of Himeji locals, I am greatly happy to share the local people’s favorite spots with you. I look forward to your tours.

Title: What Is a Private Walking Tour of Kyoto's Higashiyama and Shishigatani Area Like? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were a group visiting from Oceania. It was their first time in Japan for everyone. They had arrived in Kyoto from Tokyo the previous day and planned to stay through the middle of the month, with day trips to places such as Hiroshima on the schedule. I had proposed in advance a course starting from Ginkakuji Temple and covering the Higashiyama and Shishigatani area, but when I confirmed at the meeting point, the guests had not seen that email. I was a bit disappointed inside, but after I explained the plan again they were satisfied, and we set off on the itinerary as originally planned. Overall, this itinerary seemed to work well, and the guests appeared to enjoy it fully, which was a relief. Today there were especially few crowds, and they were delighted, saying, "It seems like we are the only foreign travelers in Kyoto." There were many questions from the group, and they were especially interested in Japanese culture and food. It was a relaxed tour with plenty of casual conversation along the way.

My name is Shoji and I’m a tour guide in Kyoto, an ancient capital of Japan for more than one thousand years until the mid 19th century.
I have been doing this work since 2019 covering not only Kyoto but also its surrounding areas like Nara , Osaka and Shiga.
I am very much interested in Japanese history, culture and traditional arts.
Kyoto and the Kansai region are rich with many heritage sites of historical and cultural features.
I am sure that I can provide the guests with good insight and help them appreciate the charms of our wonderful city.

A Licensed Guide's Report on Meiji Shrine, the Imperial Palace, and Senso-ji The guests were visitors from Europe, and it was their first time in Japan. After sightseeing in Tokyo, they planned to visit Hakone, Kyoto, and Osaka. At Meiji Shrine, they seemed deeply impressed by the quiet and solemn atmosphere, which was very different from Shibuya. At the Imperial Palace, they listened with great interest to historical explanations about the role of the Emperor, the Meiji Restoration, and the Edo Shogunate. At Senso-ji Temple, they showed interest in the lively Kaminarimon Gate and Nakamise Street, and also listened with interest to explanations about the differences between shrines and temples. Can You Do a Private Car Tour from Sapporo to Otaru and Yoichi? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were a group visiting from North America, and the tour was conducted by private car. Although one of the group also has a home in Tokyo and returns from time to time, today's booking was made for a member of the group who understands only English. Sapporo was clear and sunny, but Yoichi and Otaru had snow, which the guests enjoyed nonetheless. Since all of the guests love alcohol, they were looking forward to the Nikka Whisky distillery and Tanaka Sake Brewery. Online, the tour of the Nikka Whisky distillery was fully booked, but when I checked for same-day cancellations, an opening was found and they were able to take the tour. At Tanaka Sake Brewery as well, after touring the brewery they enjoyed a sake tasting and made a purchase. To travel from Sapporo Station to Chitose Airport by JR, there was a possibility of delays due to the snow, so they departed a little earlier than planned. The guests were pleased that being able to move at their own pace was very comfortable.

Can You Do a Private Walking Tour of the Imperial Palace and Tsukiji in Tokyo? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were visiting Japan for the first time from North America. Before starting their roughly week-long tour of Japan, they mentioned an interest in history, so I explained the history of Japan and Tokyo. With that background, we walked from Tokyo Station to approach the Otemon Gate of the Imperial Palace. The guests fully enjoyed the peaceful and quiet atmosphere of the East Gardens of the Imperial Palace, located right in the heart of a major metropolis, before moving on to the Tsukiji Outer Market, a mecca of Japanese food. As they grew hungry while exploring the market, we had lunch at a delicious sushi restaurant, and they were deeply impressed by the fresh, authentic sushi. It seemed that this encounter with sushi alone made their trip to Japan feel worthwhile.

What Is a 6-Hour Private Afternoon Tour of Tokyo Like? A Licensed Guide's Report on the Imperial Palace, Koishikawa Korakuen, and Asakusa The guests were visiting from Europe. Because we had exchanged several emails beforehand, I was able to guide them through the 6-hour itinerary smoothly and without hesitation. However, since the tour started at 14:00, I placed the Imperial Palace and Koishikawa Korakuen in the first half, which went without any problems, but some facilities at Hie Shrine and Sensoji Temple were already closed, so those parts felt a little less exciting. In addition, since the guests had arrived in Japan that same day and were tired from jet lag, the 6-hour tour involved a lot of walking despite using the subway, and they gradually became quieter. I would like to reflect on where I could have made improvements in such circumstances and apply those lessons to future tours.

Welcome to Japan. I hope you are going to enjoy your stay.

    Who am I?
I am a Licensed Guide Interpreter at an age of 61.
I got an early retirement from 36 yrs of the employment in a Japanese financial sector.
I hope I can attend to you with the Japanese politeness, hospitality and smile.

    What can I be expected?
I would like to introduce the photogenic sites, the indigenous experiences
and good Japanese local food around Tokyo, Hakone/Mt Fuji.
I might be able to show you the features of shrine and temple with a religious manner if you’d like.
As a matter of fact, I don’t have a specific religion to believe, though.
I love Japan and that’s why I started a new career as a guide.

    What do I love?
Most of all, my family. I have a wife 56 yrs old, a son 28 yrs old and a daughter 25 yrs old.
I like eating raw fish and sushi, buckwheat noodles and curry rice.

How do I spend my spear time?
I run for 5 km in the morning listening to my favorite music.
I might have a chance to go to a studio program in the fitness club nearby once a week.

I look forward to meeting you soon.
    Thank you.
