    What Is a Private Nara Day Tour From Kyoto Like? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were visitors from North America. They had planned to come from their hotel in Kyoto by train, but on the morning of the tour I received a message via a messaging app saying, "It's snowing in Kyoto. We'll come by taxi." I had informed them in advance, even down to the train times, that "if you walk less than ten minutes from the hotel, you can take a nonstop train from Karasuma Oike Station all the way to Kintetsu Nara," but as people from a place without snow, they seemed to have panicked. Perhaps thanks to this unexpected situation, the tour was lively from almost start to finish, mainly centered on the deer. Even so, they listened attentively to explanations about Buddhism, Shinto, and history, asking questions along the way. Perhaps because things were so lively, the guiding time ran over by more than an hour. A few phrases of Spanish that a previous guest had taught me seemed to serve as a nice icebreaker.     Hello! Thank you for choosing Nara! I bet you’ll love Nara. I specialize in Nara because Nara is the unique place where in one day you can cover the history and religions of Japan from the ancient times to the post war era while enjoying rambling in the UNESCO World Heritage park, having communication with lovely deer, surrounded with the beautiful nature.
    I grew up in Nara, went university in Kyoto, enjoyed teaching at high schools and a university in Osaka. The three former capitals of Japan are home to me.
    After retiring from teaching I began guiding so that I can meet various people from various corners of the world with a variety of cultures and backgrounds. Each time I guide, I find it hugely rewarding because I learn a lot from my guests sharing the history, culture and all that I know about Nara, Kyoto and Osaka.
    I used to be a marathon runner, mountain climber and skier though I am not much of them anymore.
    What I especially recommend is to stay in Nara a couple of days and enjoy communicating with friendly deer while visiting UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Nara in early morning, temples and shrines at night are well worth experiencing.

    Can You Do a Private One-Day Tokyo Tour Visiting Tokyo Tower, Asakusa, and Meiji Shrine? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were a group from North America who joined together with another member arriving from Asia, making a party visiting Japan for the first time. They stopped in Tokyo during a broader trip through Southeast Asia. As requested before their arrival, we first headed to Tokyo Tower, where clear skies allowed us to enjoy views of Mount Fuji and the geography of Tokyo from the observation deck, and I explained the history of the Tokugawa shogunate while looking at Zojoji Temple. Since some of the guests wanted to go shopping on a later day, I pointed out the location of Azabudai Hills, and then we headed from Kamiyacho toward Asakusa. As Southeast Asia had been the main focus of their trip, they had not prepared for cold weather, and with a Mount Fuji visit planned for the next day, upon arriving in Asakusa we first went straight to Uniqlo to buy warm clothing. They were delighted by how affordable Uniqlo is in Japan (prices are higher in North America and in Asia). After Meiji Shrine, I introduced Omotesando, which they liked so much that they wanted to shop there, so we parted ways at that point.

    What Is a Private One-Day Kyoto Tour from Tokyo by Bullet Train Like? A Licensed Guide's Winter Report The guests were visiting Japan for the first time from North America. Before arriving in Japan, they had traveled through Asia. In the original assignment, we were scheduled to meet at a hotel in Kyoto, but the plan was changed significantly at the last minute. In the end, they came from Tokyo by bullet train, and instead of staying overnight, they spent one day sightseeing in Kyoto before returning to Tokyo. The tour start time was set to 10:00 to match the bullet train schedule. It was a cold day in Kyoto with the first snowfall of the season. Snow remained on the ground, making it difficult to walk. However, at the Arashiyama Bamboo Grove, the sunlight, the wind, and the dreamlike scenery mixed with snow could be seen, and the guests were very satisfied. Snow had piled up on the roof of the Golden Pavilion at Kinkaku-ji Temple. There were slight delays on the JR lines due to the snow, but it did not significantly affect the tour, and we were able to finish safely. The photo was taken at the Arashiyama Bamboo Grove.

    What's a Private Tokyo Day Tour Like for History Fans? A Licensed Guide's Report on the Imperial Palace, Nihonbashi, and Asakusa The guests were visitors from North America who had arrived in Japan the day before the tour. The following day they planned to sightsee around Mount Fuji, and after that they would move on to a ski resort in Nagano Prefecture, where they would spend several days before returning to Tokyo and heading home. One of the guests had visited Japan as a child but had almost no memory of it. The guests were interested in Japanese history, so at our first stop, the Imperial Palace, they listened intently to historical stories such as the "Sakuradamon Incident." The recently awarded TV series "SHOGUN," which had just won a Golden Globe a few days earlier, came up in conversation. One of the guests had already watched it, and we had a lively discussion, while another was looking forward to seeing it. At Nihonbashi Takashimaya, in the basement food hall, I introduced Japanese vegetables and fruits such as daikon radish, green onions, apples, and white strawberries, which differ somewhat from those in North America, and the guests were surprised by the differences. As for lunch, since sushi, tempura, and ramen would likely be easy to find at restaurants during the rest of their stay, I guided them to a chanko restaurant in Asakusa as an inexpensive and delicious local-style lunch spot that only a local guide would introduce. When I explained chanko, the hearty dish that sumo wrestlers eat to build strength, one of the guests ordered the chanko set meal and another ordered ginger pork, and they finished everything, saying it was delicious. They did not make any souvenir purchases, but since cooking is usually handled at home by one of the guests, there was interest in Japanese kitchen knives, so I guided them to Kiya in Tokyo Midtown Roppongi. After introducing a few other shops, I said goodbye there so that they could take their time shopping afterward.     What Is a Private Snowy Kyoto Tour Like in Winter? A Licensed Guide's Report Today I guided a group of guests visiting from North America. The guests had come to Hokkaido for skiing together. It had been snowing since the day before, and there was quite heavy snowfall in the morning, but it later stopped and the sky cleared. The guests were delighted, saying that a snowy Kyoto had a lovely atmosphere. Perhaps thanks to the snow, everywhere was less crowded, so we were able to enjoy things at a relaxed pace. I had hoped to show them Kinkaku-ji in the snow, but unfortunately the snow had melted without accumulating, which was a little disappointing. Fushimi Inari Taisha was not too crowded either, and I believe the guests were very pleased.

    What Is a Private Himeji Castle and Kokoen Garden Tour Like? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests arrived in Himeji on the rapid train and we were able to meet on time, then headed toward Himeji Castle while enjoying the trick art along Miyuki-dori shopping street. The trick art featuring ukiyo-e and the Choju-giga scrolls was a big hit with the guests. The guests seemed to have a deep love of Japanese history and culture, and listened intently to the history of Himeji Castle and its defensive mechanisms. The rest of the group also appeared very interested, and in addition to the defensive structures, they were drawn to the layout of the keep and the joinery techniques used in restoring the great pillars and beams. Since they seemed to be sightseeing with Osaka as their base, I introduced the Takenaka Carpentry Tools Museum near Shin-Kobe Station in case they had time. They fully enjoyed the view from the top floor of the great keep. After some shopping, we moved on to Kokoen Garden. We toured the nine different styles of gardens, and they especially seemed to like the beautiful koi in the garden of the largest residence, once the site of the former Himeji Castle lord's west residence, as well as the Teikyo Bridge that spans the maple valley and the waterfall falling into the pond from the roofed veranda of the Choontei. A crow or a duck was bathing at the top of the waterfall, which they also found amusing. We ended the tour just outside Kokoen Garden, but since they said they would walk back to Miyuki-dori for a late lunch, I accompanied them as far as Nikaimachi-suji before parting ways.

    I am Hiromi Mizoi, call me Hiro. I mainly have Himeji tours because I live in Himeji. I got my National Guide Certificate in 2017. I started to guide tourists as a volunteer guide in 2004. I had been a volunteer guide for a long time. However, I could not have any tours from April in 2020 to November in 2022 due to the Covid-19 Pandemic. Now, many tourists have come back to Japan. So, I am very excited. I would like to share not only the beauty of Himeji Castle’s Main Tower Complex but also the tricky defense systems of the entire Castle Grounds, which many visitors do not realize, with you. I was born and grew up very close to the west side of the moats of the Castle. So, I love Himeji Castle. I like other tourists’ favorite sightseeing spots such as Kokoen Garden and Engyoji Temple in Mt. Shosya.     What Is a Private One-Day Tokyo Tour Like? A Licensed Guide's Report on Tsukiji and Asakusa The guests were visitors from North America. Tokyo was the final stop of their month-long trip, and they had just arrived that morning from another part of Asia, so they seemed hungry and tired. We decided to have a light breakfast at the Hotel and then take our time, starting with Tsukiji. They were delighted by the fresh seafood and dried goods, and at the sushi restaurant I guided them to, they enjoyed a lively conversation with the head chef and were very pleased. They said the sea urchin was the most delicious they had ever eaten. Next, in Asakusa, it was still crowded from the lingering New Year atmosphere, so we visited the key spots including the tourist information center, an ukiyo-e shop (where they also enjoyed chatting with the shopkeeper), Senso-ji Temple, and Asakusa Shrine. Originally we had planned to stop by Meiji Shrine as well, but since one of the guests was tired and wished to return to the Hotel early, we changed our plans and saw them off at the Hotel.     Title: What's a Private Nara Day Tour Like for Deer Feeding and Tofu Cuisine? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were part of the same group I had guided in Nara in August, and this time the tour was for members of the group who had not visited Japan on the previous trip. Since they had enjoyed the earlier Nara tour, they wanted to experience the same route again, especially interacting with the deer — feeding them and spending time playing with them. The weather was not too cold, so it seemed fine to stay outside for a long time. The guests also enjoyed shopping at the souvenir stores near Wakakusa Hill, buying sweets and having their names written in ink calligraphy. For lunch we went to a tofu specialty restaurant that the guests had requested (I had made a reservation in advance). As expected, they told me it was delicious. Some of the guests wanted to shop and enjoy the ocean view at the Rinku outlet mall near the hotel that day, so we departed for the hotel a little earlier. Both were clearly having a wonderful time in Nara, which I was very glad about.

    Title: What Is a 4-Hour Private Tour of Tokyo Like? A Licensed Guide's Report on Shibuya, Meiji Shrine, and Asakusa The guests were a group of visitors from Oceania. Another part of the family was traveling separately today, but we happened to run into them right in front of the First Torii Gate at Meiji Shrine. The guests had arrived in Japan earlier this month and had already traveled through Kyoto and Osaka. The previous day they had visited Tokyo Disneyland, and this morning they came to Shibuya by an arranged car. Since they had not yet seen Shibuya itself, I introduced them to Center Street, the Scramble Crossing, and the Hachiko statue. They planned to stay in Tokyo for several nights and then head to Hakuba for skiing. I mentioned that there was currently heavy snow affecting transportation, and advised them to confirm that conditions would have recovered by the time of their trip. Since the guests were going to join a food tour in Shinjuku in the evening, this 4-hour guiding session had been requested to help them get used to Tokyo's transportation network. This private tour was arranged through [Japan Guide Agency (JGA Inc.)](https://www.j-g-a.org/). From tomorrow, the guests planned to get around mostly on their own. Their morning plan was Tsukiji, and in the afternoon some of the guests wanted to visit a nail salon in the Shiba area. Since the To-06 bus goes directly there from Shibuya, we checked the departure point together before parting ways. Now that the crowds from the start of the year had settled down, both Meiji Shrine and Senso-ji Temple had fewer Japanese visitors, with international travelers making up the majority.

    I had worked in the international business scene for over 40 years and traveled to North America and European countries over 1000 days.
    After I retired from the business, I traveled to most of the major sightseeing spots in all 47 prefectures in Japan.

    My guide is starting from a brief history of the site where I am going to guide. I usually add a briefing about Japanese culture based on religions, such as Shinto Shrine and Buddhist temples. A geographic background behind the history is also important.

    I am happy to introduce Japanese Manga/Anime cultures such as Akihabara, Nakano Broadway and Ghibli related sites.
    Travelling along the JR central line where guests can stopover at major animation studios (it is not accepted to visit the inside). The majority of animation studios such as TMS Entertainment, SUNRISE, A1 Pictures etc. are located in this area. Suginami Animation museum, Studio Ghibli and Ghibli Museum are also located.
    Guests can feel old houses in the Spirited Away scene in the Edo-Tokyo Open Air Architectural Museum.

    I can also provide a pilgrimage to the sacred place (shooting location) for the Shinkai Makoto animation movies such as Your name, Weathering with you, and Suzume.

    Another interesting feature is to visit authentic Japanese style pub meals such as Yakitori, Karaage, and Sushi etc.
    Asakusa Hoppy Street, Ameyoko Street, Yurakucho, Shimbashi, Shinjuku Golden gai, Shinjuku Omoide Yokocho are nice to visit.

    A Sake tasting at Sake Cellar can be an option.

    In addition to the above, I am available in the neighboring cities.

    Kawagoe is an old town developed in the 17th century. It has very close relationship with the Edo central government. Kawagoe castle ruins, Kitain temple and 500 Buddha statues will welcome the guests.
    These areas are renovated and provide an old days atmosphere.
    Japanese style sweets food stands will fascinate the guests.
    Kawagoe is about 1 – 1.5 train trip from Tokyo.

    Kamakura is the first Samurai worriers government established in the late 12th century.
    The Buddhism are introduced to Japan in the 6th century, and flourished at Nara and Kyoto later. A newer Buddhism sect such as Zen has well developed at Kamakura area.
    Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine, Gigantic Buddha statue at Kotokuin Temple and the flower temple Hasedera Temple are must-see.
    Kamakura is about 1 – 1.5 train trip from Tokyo.

    What Can You See in Himeji When Himeji Castle Is Closed? A Licensed Guide's Private Tour Report Himeji Castle is closed on December 29 and 30, and surrounding facilities such as Kokoen Garden are also closed during that period, so I informed the guests in advance through email exchanges. The planned course mainly included Engyoji Temple on Mount Shosha, Otokoyama Hachimangu Shrine and Senhime Tenmangu Shrine on Mount Otokoyama to the northwest of Himeji Castle, the majestic view of the Himeji Castle keep group from the reservoir, and a walk from Mount Otokoyama through the middle moat, the inner moat, and Sannomaru Square, continuing along the moats. Because the Shinkansen arrived a little earlier than the original meeting time, after we met I had the guests reconfirm the options before the bus departure time. At Engyoji Temple on Mount Shosha, we walked the mountain approach path from the offering hall, and visited the main hall Maniden, the three halls that served as a filming location for The Last Samurai, and the Honda family mausoleum, then went on to the inner sanctuary. We were able to take our time especially at the dining hall, which can be viewed inside the three halls. The beautiful autumn foliage had already ended, but the guests very much enjoyed the mystical atmosphere of the mountain approach path and the areas around the halls. The guests listened with interest to the stories of the shrines on Mount Otokoyama and their various origins, as well as the origins of the surrounding low mountains from the Harima Fudoki. They also seemed to enjoy the view of the Himeji Castle keep group from the reservoir park at the summit, the stroll along the Semba River, which was the former outer moat on the west side, and along the middle moat, and then Sannomaru Square inside the inner moat — a course quite different from the usual tour. The guests said that when they come to Japan next time, they would definitely like to visit Himeji Castle and Kokoen Garden. I recommended lunch, but during the wait for the bus they ate a sweet bun and said that was fine. Finally, on the way to Himeji Station, they enjoyed the trick art along Miyuki-dori, and the tour ended at JR Himeji Station. Even though it was during the period when Himeji Castle and Kokoen Garden were closed, the guests said they had thoroughly enjoyed themselves, which was a relief.

    I am Hiromi Mizoi, call me Hiro. I mainly have Himeji tours because I live in Himeji. I got my National Guide Certificate in 2017. I started to guide tourists as a volunteer guide in 2004. I had been a volunteer guide for a long time. However, I could not have any tours from April in 2020 to November in 2022 due to the Covid-19 Pandemic. Now, many tourists have come back to Japan. So, I am very excited. I would like to share not only the beauty of Himeji Castle’s Main Tower Complex but also the tricky defense systems of the entire Castle Grounds, which many visitors do not realize, with you. I was born and grew up very close to the west side of the moats of the Castle. So, I love Himeji Castle. I like other tourists’ favorite sightseeing spots such as Kokoen Garden and Engyoji Temple in Mt. Shosya.
