[Fourth Stop] Meiji Shrine Even in the rain, there were many tourists. At the main hall, the guests tried a Shinto-style prayer. A notable stop on the tour was Meiji Shrine, which is dedicated to Emperor Meiji and Empress Shoken and is set within a vast forested precinct in the heart of Tokyo. The shrine was established in 1920 and is one of Japan's most visited Shinto shrines, known for its towering torii gates and peaceful walking paths. Visitors often take part in traditional customs such as purifying their hands at the water basin, offering a prayer at the main hall, and writing wishes on wooden ema plaques, making it an ideal place to experience Shinto practices firsthand.

    Title: What Is a Private Guided Tour of Miyajima and Hiroshima Like During a Busy Holiday Season? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were visiting Japan from North America. On the day of the tour, it was during a consecutive holiday period, so both Itsukushima Shrine and the museum had very long lines. At Itsukushima Shrine, I waited in line on my own and handed over the tickets at the entrance, but at the museum this was not possible, so we skipped the entry. However, anticipating this, I had taken them first to the Honkawa Elementary School Peace Memorial and provided a fairly detailed explanation there. As a result, the guests had no particular complaints, and I believe they actually appreciated the way the situation was handled. At the end, since they wanted to have okonomiyaki for dinner, I guided them to a restaurant near the hotel and then parted ways near the hotel. A notable stop on the tour was Itsukushima Shrine on Miyajima. Itsukushima Shrine is famous for its iconic "floating" vermilion torii gate, which appears to rise from the sea at high tide. The shrine, with its elegant corridors built over the water, has a long history and is registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is one of the most celebrated scenic spots in Japan and attracts many visitors throughout the year.

After graduating from university and completing graduate school, I moved to Hiroshima in 1984. Hiroshima has been my home base for more than 42 years, including approximately five and a half years during which I was posted to Germany and the United States. I worked as an engineer at Mazda Motor Corporation for 40 years. While working at Mazda, I earned a Ph.D. in Engineering through a doctoral program designed for working professionals at a national university. During the final five years of my career at Mazda, I was assigned to Hiroshima University, where I served as a Specially Appointed Professor and Deputy Director of a research center. In this role, I led the development of the center’s organizational and operational framework and advanced more than 20 industry–university collaborative research projects across four major research programs, contributing to regional revitalization. Living in Nagasaki, Hiroshima, Germany, and the United States has deepened my appreciation for the distinct histories and cultures of different regions and broadened my international perspective. Drawing on these experiences, I strive to offer tours that allow guests from around the world to feel comfortable and relaxed while enjoying a genuinely engaging experience. After retiring from Mazda at the end of March 2024, I embarked on a new chapter in my life as a licensed local guide in Hiroshima.     A Private Rainy-Day Tour of Yokohama: A Licensed Guide's Report on Sankeien, Yamashita Park, and Chinatown The guests were visitors from North America, and this was their final day in Japan after visiting Tokyo, Kyoto, and Mount Fuji. Unfortunately it rained from the morning; it eased at times but then came down heavily again. The guests had no umbrellas and only raincoats, and one of them had wet shoes, which looked quite uncomfortable. Along the way I tried to offer a spare pair of socks and encouraged purchasing socks or an umbrella, but they firmly declined, saying they were fine. However, in the latter part of the day they finally bought a plastic umbrella in Chinatown. We took a taxi from Sankeien Garden to Chinatown. Since there were no taxis at the entrance, I asked at the reception desk and they gave me the number of a taxi company, so I called to arrange one. The guests enjoyed the scenery of Sankeien Garden, Yamashita Park, and the Minato Mirai area, but because of the rain the overall mood was somewhat subdued. For shopping, they showed interest in a leather goods shop at the Red Brick Warehouse but did not buy anything, and they also did not eat anything in Chinatown. It was difficult to come up with alternative plans for Yokohama, so I would appreciate any information on rainy-day options. A notable stop on the tour was Sankeien Garden, a spacious traditional Japanese garden in Yokohama that opened to the public in the early 20th century. It features historic buildings relocated from Kyoto and Kamakura, including a three-story pagoda, as well as ponds, streams, and seasonal plants that make it a scenic spot throughout the year.

    Title: What's a Private Day Tour of Tokyo Like? A Licensed Guide's Report on the Imperial Palace, Ginza, and Tsukiji The guests were a very close group who came to Japan from Europe. They kept telling jokes and making me laugh throughout, which made for a lively tour. They had just arrived in Japan the night before the tour, and for this first day of sightseeing I planned the itinerary around their request to "first stroll around the Imperial Palace and the Ginza area to get a feel for the atmosphere of central Tokyo." I explained that the Tokyo Station building was designed by Kingo Tatsuno, who studied architecture under the British architect Josiah Conder, and that KITTE is the former Tokyo Central Post Office and that the postal system was adopted from Britain, which helped them understand the relationship between Britain and Japan during Japan's opening to the world. One of the guests joked with a smile while taking photos, saying, "I hope they learned from the British post office and don't have a sloppy postal system." We walked from Miyuki-dori past Nijubashi Bridge to Sakuradamon Gate, where they viewed the vast grounds of the Imperial Palace and the turrets and gates that remain from Edo Castle, and they enjoyed how it differs in character from European royal palaces. At the request of one of the guests who wanted to look at cosmetics in Ginza, I guided them to the cosmetics floor of Ginza Mitsukoshi. Since one of my relatives used to work in sales for a cosmetics company, I have heard many behind-the-scenes stories about department store cosmetics sales staff, and when I explained the cosmetics while sharing those stories, they were very pleased. Finally, we extended our walk to the Tsukiji Outer Market, where they enjoyed a late lunch at Sushizanmai. They shared an omakase sushi set and a few thin rolls, and one of the guests, who loves Kirin Ichiban Shibori, enjoyed the draft version. Apparently they had only ever had the bottled Ichiban Shibori before, and they showed their biggest smile of the day.

    A Private Tokyo Tuna Auction and Tsukiji Food Tour: What Is It Like? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were visitors from North America who were traveling in Japan. They had arrived from overseas the night before the tour, and due to jet lag they had stayed awake at their hotel until early morning before joining the tour. They were both cheerful and talked happily about many things, which made for a lively tour. Since they had won a lottery in advance, they were able to observe the fresh tuna auction from a special viewing floor. Watching the large quantity of glossy, black fresh tuna lined up, they said it was "very beautiful and gorgeous," and took many photos and videos. At the sushi restaurant after the auction, they enjoyed a "tuna feast" and savored the differences in flavor among the various cuts. One of the guests seemed especially fond of the chutoro (medium fatty tuna); the moment it was placed in their mouth, their eyes opened wide and they were moved, saying "it melted on my tongue." At the Tsukiji Outer Market, they seemed to enjoy the strawberry daifuku, and were delighted, saying "Japanese strawberries have a more delicate flavor than the ones back home." A notable stop on the tour was the Tsukiji Outer Market. Tsukiji Outer Market is a lively district in Tokyo lined with hundreds of small shops and stalls selling fresh seafood, produce, kitchen tools, and a wide variety of prepared foods and snacks. Even after the inner wholesale market relocated, the outer market remains a popular destination where visitors can sample street food, watch skilled vendors at work, and experience the energy of one of Tokyo's most famous food areas.

    What's a Rainy-Day Private Tokyo Tour Like? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were very friendly visitors from Europe. Since it was their first time in Japan, we toured the highlights of Tokyo. Unfortunately it rained, but we were able to enjoy a pleasant walk through the forest at Meiji Shrine. When I spoke about Japanese views on religion, they mentioned that it was quite similar where they come from. At the Shibuya Crossing, there was not much of a line for the Hachiko statue, so we were able to take photos right away. On the Ginza Line heading to Asakusa, they shared various stories about taxes and medical costs in their home region. In Asakusa, the rain grew heavier, so we went around quickly and then moved on to Tsukiji. I introduced shops serving wagyu beef and sashimi, and we parted ways at the food court. It rained throughout, but it was a fun tour. A notable stop on the tour was Meiji Shrine. Meiji Shrine is a Shinto shrine located in central Tokyo, dedicated to Emperor Meiji and Empress Shoken. It is surrounded by a vast forest of around 100,000 trees donated from across Japan, creating a peaceful green sanctuary in the heart of the city. Visitors often come to experience traditional rituals, write wishes on wooden plaques, and enjoy a quiet walk along the tree-lined paths leading to the main shrine buildings.

    Title: What Is a Private Hiroshima and Miyajima Day Tour Like? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were a very kind group visiting from North America. The museum was relatively uncrowded, so they were able to view the exhibits at a leisurely pace. After finishing, it was striking to see one of the guests moved to tears. The Peace Memorial Park was not crowded either, and on Miyajima they took many photographs of the deer, the torii gate, their meals, and while shopping. At Itsukushima Shrine the tide had gone out, but they were able to enter smoothly, and on the way back they were delighted to be able to walk right up near the torii gate. We returned to Hiroshima Port by high-speed boat, where the tour ended a little earlier than planned. A notable stop on the tour was Itsukushima Shrine on Miyajima Island. Itsukushima Shrine is famous for its iconic vermilion torii gate, which appears to float on the water during high tide and can be approached on foot at low tide. The shrine, with its buildings constructed over the sea on wooden pillars, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Japan's most celebrated scenic views. The surrounding island of Miyajima is also well known for its freely roaming deer and its traditional atmosphere, making it a memorable destination for visitors to the Hiroshima area.

    # What Is a Private Sake Brewery and Apple Picking Tour in Aomori City Like? A Licensed Guide's Report [Japan Guide Agency (JGA Inc.)](https://www.j-g-a.org/) guide accompanied a guest from North America on a private tour of a sake brewery in Aomori City. The guest was studying Japanese and said, "Today, could you please guide me in Japanese instead of English!" Since the guest spoke Japanese haltingly, I made every effort to guide in simple, standard Japanese. For someone like me who converses every day mixing in the Tsugaru dialect, I realized just how difficult it is to speak simple, easy Japanese in standard form! It was truly mentally exhausting. Through a connection with a homestay host in Tokyo four years earlier, who came from Hirosaki City, the guest was staying in Hirosaki for a week. The guest was a wine sommelier and a certified sake taster, and visited sake breweries in Kanazawa, Niigata, and the Hirosaki, Kuroishi, and Aomori areas. The trip continued on to Aomori, Hakodate, Muroran, Nagoya, and Tokyo, including a month-long homestay with Japanese lessons. I also taught a phrase in the Tsugaru dialect. A notable stop on the tour was a sake brewery in Aomori City. Aomori is well known for its rice cultivation and clean water, which make the region ideal for brewing high-quality sake. Visitors to local breweries can often learn about the traditional brewing process, see the fermentation tanks, and sample different varieties of sake, making it a memorable experience for those interested in Japanese culture and craftsmanship.

    Title: What's a Private Tokyo Tour Like with a Licensed Guide? A Report Covering Tsukiji, Meiji Shrine, and Asakusa The guests were a group visiting from North America, gathering from several different areas. Some of the group had arrived in Tokyo by cruise the day before, and they had passed by Mount Fuji along the way, but it seems the weather was poor and they could not see it. The others in the group had arrived by air the previous night. The Hotel where I went to meet them was, true to its name, a "weird" hotel. It seemed to be aimed at inbound visitors, as I did not see any Japanese guests. A doll was placed at the reception, and unless you called for assistance, check-in and check-out were done using a dedicated machine at the front desk. Things went smoothly through Tsukiji and Takeshita Street, but one of the group did not want to walk much and waited at the Meiji Jingu Forest Terrace. After we reached the Imperial Palace Outer Garden, some of the group decided to return to the Hotel by taxi. At that time, one of the group who was not feeling well after the long flight also returned with them. Some of the group wanted to obtain goshuin (shrine and temple stamps), and they collected them at Meiji Shrine and Senso-ji Temple. Others in the group tilted their heads, wondering what was so interesting about it. Although there was occasional light rain, the remaining members of the group completed the tour without any trouble. A notable stop on the tour was Senso-ji Temple in Asakusa. Senso-ji is Tokyo's oldest temple, founded in the 7th century, and is dedicated to Kannon, the Buddhist goddess of mercy. Visitors approach the main hall through the iconic Kaminarimon (Thunder Gate) with its enormous red lantern, and then walk along Nakamise-dori, a bustling shopping street lined with stalls selling traditional snacks and souvenirs. It remains one of the most popular and atmospheric sightseeing spots in Tokyo.

    I had worked in the international business scene for over 40 years and traveled to North America and European countries over 1000 days.
    After I retired from the business, I traveled to most of the major sightseeing spots in all 47 prefectures in Japan.

    My guide is starting from a brief history of the site where I am going to guide. I usually add a briefing about Japanese culture based on religions, such as Shinto Shrine and Buddhist temples. A geographic background behind the history is also important.

    I am happy to introduce Japanese Manga/Anime cultures such as Akihabara, Nakano Broadway and Ghibli related sites.
    Travelling along the JR central line where guests can stopover at major animation studios (it is not accepted to visit the inside). The majority of animation studios such as TMS Entertainment, SUNRISE, A1 Pictures etc. are located in this area. Suginami Animation museum, Studio Ghibli and Ghibli Museum are also located.
    Guests can feel old houses in the Spirited Away scene in the Edo-Tokyo Open Air Architectural Museum.

    I can also provide a pilgrimage to the sacred place (shooting location) for the Shinkai Makoto animation movies such as Your name, Weathering with you, and Suzume.

    Another interesting feature is to visit authentic Japanese style pub meals such as Yakitori, Karaage, and Sushi etc.
    Asakusa Hoppy Street, Ameyoko Street, Yurakucho, Shimbashi, Shinjuku Golden gai, Shinjuku Omoide Yokocho are nice to visit.

    A Sake tasting at Sake Cellar can be an option.

    In addition to the above, I am available in the neighboring cities.

    Kawagoe is an old town developed in the 17th century. It has very close relationship with the Edo central government. Kawagoe castle ruins, Kitain temple and 500 Buddha statues will welcome the guests.
    These areas are renovated and provide an old days atmosphere.
    Japanese style sweets food stands will fascinate the guests.
    Kawagoe is about 1 – 1.5 train trip from Tokyo.

    Kamakura is the first Samurai worriers government established in the late 12th century.
    The Buddhism are introduced to Japan in the 6th century, and flourished at Nara and Kyoto later. A newer Buddhism sect such as Zen has well developed at Kamakura area.
    Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine, Gigantic Buddha statue at Kotokuin Temple and the flower temple Hasedera Temple are must-see.
    Kamakura is about 1 – 1.5 train trip from Tokyo.
