    What's a Private Rainy-Day Tour of Kochi Like? A Licensed Guide's Report on Kochi Castle and Ryuga Cave The guests were visitors from North America. As it was unfortunately raining, I recommended changing our originally planned visit to a botanical garden and going to Ryuga Cave instead. Since we started early, we were able to finish visiting Kochi Castle before the buses from the ship arrived, and then headed to Ryuga Cave. As we were not able to find time for lunch, we ate seaweed rolls bought at Hirome Market in the car while traveling. The guests found Ryuga Cave fascinating, so I was glad we went there. On the way back to the port, I had them take in the view from Zenjibuji Temple, and we then took commemorative photos with the ship from a hilltop at the new port before ending the tour. A notable stop on the tour was Kochi Castle. Kochi Castle is one of only twelve castles in Japan that retains its original main keep built during the Edo period. Located in the center of Kochi City, it offers sweeping views from the top of the keep and is admired for its well-preserved historic structures, making it a valuable site for understanding traditional Japanese castle architecture.

    I was born and raised in Kochi city, and I worked for Kochi City Hall for nearly 30 years, so I think I know a lot about Kochi.

    Firstly, I can guide you to the Kochi castle. Most castles you can find in Japan have been rebuilt after fires, wars, or natural disasters. However, Kochi Castle is one of the very few castles that still have the whole structure of its original tower and the mail palace from the Edo period (1603–1868). This makes it especially valuable for understanding Japan’s history and traditional architecture. You’ll like it!

    Other major tourist sites are adventurous Ryugado limestone cave, Makino botanical garden, Chikurinji temple with historical stonesteps, Zenjibuji temple with the spectacular panoramic view, paper-making activity, Oboke gorge, Nakatsu gorge, Niyodo river with a historical bridge and so on.
    If you like sake, you can visit sake brewery, and if you are interested in walking local streets, you can stroll my neighborhood.

    Kochi is a small city, but it’s very popular among tourists for its beautiful nature and good food. I took my kids to rivers and mountains when they were little. If you are interested in those places, please ask me. And I know many good restaurants, too.

    Meeting point: Hotel What Is a 4-Hour Private Walking Tour of Tokyo Like? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were visitors from Europe on their first trip to Japan. The day before, they had explored Shinjuku and Shibuya on their own. They planned to stay in Tokyo for a few days and then travel on to Kyoto and Matsumoto. For this booking, a travel agency was involved as an intermediary. Only the guests' phone number was shared with me, so all communication was done through a messaging app. Although it was a four-hour course, the guests had many places they wanted to see. I provided all the relevant information, but since it was not possible to cover everything within the time limit, after my tour ended at Ameyoko in Ueno, I provided a pamphlet showing the route from the Tokyo National Museum to the Yanaka-Nezu-Sendagi area and explained the walking course. I also handed over a Tokyo Travel Guide and added some suggestions for other places to visit. The guests seemed to enjoy traditional crafts, purchasing ukiyo-e prints at an antique shop and paper products at a specialty store. They also bought several good-luck charms at Senso-ji Temple. A notable stop on the tour was Senso-ji Temple in Asakusa. Senso-ji is Tokyo's oldest temple, founded in the 7th century, and is one of the most visited religious sites in Japan. Visitors approach the temple through the iconic Kaminarimon (Thunder Gate) with its enormous red lantern, then walk along Nakamise-dori, a lively shopping street lined with stalls selling traditional snacks and souvenirs. The temple is dedicated to Kannon, the Buddhist goddess of mercy, and remains an important cultural and spiritual landmark in the Asakusa district.

    Travelling along the JR central line where guests can stopover at major animation studios (it is not accepted to visit the inside). The majority of animation studios such as TMS Entertainment, SUNRISE, A1 Pictures etc. are located in this area. Suginami Animation museum, Studio Ghibli and Ghibli Museum are also located.
    Guests can feel old houses in the Spirited Away scene in the Edo-Tokyo Open Air Architectural Museum.

    I can also provide a pilgrimage to the sacred place (shooting location) for the Shinkai Makoto animation movies such as Your name, Weathering with you, and Suzume.

    Another interesting feature is to visit authentic Japanese style pub meals such as Yakitori, Karaage, and Sushi etc.
    Asakusa Hoppy Street, Ameyoko Street, Yurakucho, Shimbashi, Shinjuku Golden gai, Shinjuku Omoide Yokocho are nice to visit.

    A Sake tasting at Sake Cellar can be an option.

    In addition to the above, I am available in the neighboring cities.

    Kawagoe is an old town developed in the 17th century. It has very close relationship with the Edo central government. Kawagoe castle ruins, Kitain temple and 500 Buddha statues will welcome the guests.
    These areas are renovated and provide an old days atmosphere.
    Japanese style sweets food stands will fascinate the guests.
    Kawagoe is about 1 – 1.5 train trip from Tokyo.

    Kamakura is the first Samurai worriers government established in the late 12th century.
    The Buddhism are introduced to Japan in the 6th century, and flourished at Nara and Kyoto later. A newer Buddhism sect such as Zen has well developed at Kamakura area.
    Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine, Gigantic Buddha statue at Kotokuin Temple and the flower temple Hasedera Temple are must-see.
    Kamakura is about 1 – 1.5 train trip from Tokyo.

Since we had not been able to communicate much beforehand, I confirmed the hotel booking and prepared an itinerary myself. As the guests had no particular requests, I guided them along the most classic course (Nijubashi Bridge, Meiji Shrine, and Shibuya). They showed great interest in Japanese culture and history, which made guiding them very easy. They were also delighted by the Shibuya Scramble Crossing. It was a tour without lunch, so I had them buy some water along the way and we took a short rest at the resting area in Meiji Shrine. I heard they had lost a cane at the airport, but they walked well without any complaints, which was a great help. I made sure to proceed with the tour while checking in now and then to ask if everything was all right. Since we were short on time, we skipped Asakusa, so I explained how they could go there on their own. After explaining the route home, I saw them off at the Ginza Line Shibuya Station and said goodbye. It was a short tour, but I spent an enjoyable time with the guests. A notable stop on the tour was Meiji Shrine. Meiji Shrine is a Shinto shrine located in central Tokyo, dedicated to the deified spirits of Emperor Meiji and Empress Shoken. Surrounded by a large forest of around 100,000 trees donated from across Japan, it offers a peaceful retreat from the busy city. Visitors can experience traditional Shinto customs such as making offerings, writing wishes on wooden plaques, and passing through the grand wooden torii gates that mark the entrance to the sacred grounds.

They had come to Kyoto soon after arriving in Tokyo, so they knew very little about Japan. I talked with them about Japanese culture, including history, Buddhism, Shinto, the emperor, the shogun, and samurai. At Tenryu-ji Temple, I also explained Zen Buddhism and the temple gardens. At Nijo Castle, I described the Meiji Restoration and talked about how important Nijo Castle had been. What especially caught their interest was Yasui Konpira-gu Shrine. They mentioned that while there are many shrines that bring good fortune, they wondered if there was a shrine for cutting off bad relationships. So we went to Yasui Konpira-gu Shrine, where they prayed to sever bad ties. I believe they enjoyed it very much. A notable stop on the tour was Tenryu-ji Temple in the Arashiyama district of Kyoto. Tenryu-ji is one of Kyoto's most important Zen temples and is registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is especially famous for its Sogenchi Garden, a classic Japanese landscape garden that incorporates the surrounding mountains as borrowed scenery and has survived in its original form for centuries.

Originally, after visiting the Peace Park-related facilities, I had planned to guide them to the Nagasaki Museum of History and Culture, but since the guests were from Europe, I changed the plan and guided them to Glover Garden instead. As the guests had a deep interest in the damage caused by the atomic bomb, they attentively visited the Peace Park, the Hypocenter Park, and the Atomic Bomb Museum. At the Tanaka Sake Brewery Kikkogura, the group was fascinated by the sake brewing process, enjoyed a sake tasting and comparison, and were satisfied after purchasing a sake gift set as a souvenir. For lunch, the group was pleased that the ramen and gyoza at a ramen restaurant were delicious and reasonably priced. The group strolled through the Sakaimachi shopping street and purchased many souvenirs at the music box hall and the glass shop. They also walked along the Otaru Canal and took many photographs. Overall, the group was delighted, saying the entire itinerary and the lunch were very enjoyable. A notable stop on the tour was the Otaru Canal. The Otaru Canal is one of Hokkaido's most iconic landmarks, completed in 1923 to support the city's booming shipping trade. Lined with historic stone warehouses that have been converted into cafes, shops, and museums, the canal is especially picturesque in the evening when the gas lamps along its promenade are lit, creating a romantic atmosphere that draws many visitors throughout the year.

English communication was somewhat difficult, and one member of the group understood English best, which seemed to be the reason that prior communication by email and messaging app had been challenging. Everything proceeded smoothly. Before starting the tour, I recommended ICOCA cards for public transportation, which they purchased. At Osaka Castle, we viewed it from the outside, but the group appeared very satisfied with its beauty and grandeur. At Kuromon Market, they sampled roasted chestnuts, black bean tea, pickles, dried wakame seaweed, and tuna toro, among other things. They particularly liked the black bean tea and dried wakame, and bought large quantities as souvenirs. After finishing the spot visits, they wished to explore on their own and have lunch, so we parted about 30 minutes early. I introduced several shops serving ramen, which they had requested. I presented handmade drawstring pouches, made by my sister, to some of the guests, who were delighted. A notable stop on the tour was Kuromon Market in Osaka. Often called "Osaka's Kitchen," Kuromon Market is a lively covered shopping street with a history stretching back around two centuries. It is home to roughly 150 shops selling fresh seafood, produce, meat, and a wide variety of prepared foods and local specialties. Many stalls offer samples and freshly cooked items to eat on the spot, making it a popular destination for visitors wanting to experience authentic Osaka food culture.

    1) Tako-yaki
    Tako-yaki is a snack filled with pieces of octopus in a batter of flour , egg and soup stock. You can call them octopus dumplings or balls. “Tako” means
    octopus and “yaki” means grilled or broiled.
    2) Okonomi-yaki
    This word Okonomi-yaki means “cook just as you like” and you can use whatever you like as toppings, such as beef, pork, shrimp, squid and octopus.
    Okonomi-yaki is round shape and just like pancakes or pizza in shape mainly made from egg, flour and water.
    3) Kushi-katsu
    Kushi-katsu is skewered cutlet or deep-fried foods on a stick. “Kushi” means skewer and “katsu” means cutlet. Various kinds of foods are used for
    ingredients such as beef, pork, chicken, shrimp, squid, octopus and lots of kinds of vegetables.

    Actually, the western Japan including Osaka, Kobe and Himeji is called as “Home of such local soul foods”. You should give it a try and I am sure
    that you like them very much.

    Title: What Is a Full-Day Private Tour of Tokyo Like for Vegan Guests? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were visitors from Europe. This was also a booking made on their behalf through a travel agency, but since I received the guests' information early, I was able to communicate with them directly, so both the itinerary and lunch went smoothly. In particular, the guests followed a plant-based diet, so I had some difficulty choosing a lunch spot, but I took them to a restaurant in Asakusa that I had researched in advance, and they were delighted at how delicious it was (they had katsu curry and oyakodon). I had a beef bowl made from tofu, which honestly did not taste good at all (a wry smile). Since it was an 8-hour tour, the guests were able to see each location at a relaxed pace, and they walked a great deal without appearing tired at all. Along the way, I bought them some treats such as ice cream (yukimi daifuku) and taiyaki, which they happily enjoyed. As souvenirs, I gave them a Japanese tenugui hand towel and a folding fan, and they were very pleased with these as well. I also received a very kind review comment, so overall I believe the guests were satisfied. Incidentally, during guiding I attach a flag pin badge to my backpack to match the guests' background, but I was told that the Union Jack holds no appeal and that I should prepare a different flag instead. The guests also had quite a strong accent, so I had some trouble understanding them. A notable stop on the tour was Senso-ji Temple in Asakusa. Senso-ji is Tokyo's oldest temple, founded in the 7th century, and is dedicated to Kannon, the Buddhist goddess of mercy. Visitors enter through the iconic Kaminarimon (Thunder Gate) with its massive red lantern, then pass along Nakamise-dori, a lively shopping street lined with stalls selling traditional snacks and souvenirs, before reaching the grand main hall and five-story pagoda. The area remains one of the most popular and atmospheric places in Tokyo to experience traditional Japanese culture.
