The meeting had been arranged at a Hotel, but through a last-minute exchange with the guests via a messaging app on the day, it turned out that their accommodation was actually a different Hotel. I hurried over to meet them there. This was likely due to a miscommunication about a change from the local travel agency. The group consisted of several guests. As for the tour itself, since they were moving to Nagano in the afternoon, they wished to finish the tour at Kanazawa Station before around 1:00. Although it was a short time, they enjoyed it fully.

    What's a Full-Day Private Walking Tour of Tokyo Like? A Licensed Guide's Report on Meiji Shrine, Asakusa, and Kappabashi The guests were a group visiting from North America. They mentioned that this was their final stop in Tokyo, after enjoying skiing in Osaka, Kyoto, and Hokkaido. Although there was a little confusion meeting up at Shibuya Station, we managed to find each other and walked from Shibuya through Yoyogi Park to Meiji Shrine. Along the way I explained aspects of Japanese culture, ancient capitals, and the differences between shrines and temples, and within the shrine grounds I explained how Shinto has influenced Japanese culture as well as the manner of purification. Since some of the guests were interested in fashion, we did some window shopping while walking along Harajuku Street, and then continued on to Asakusa and Senso-ji Temple. As I had already explained the differences between temples and shrines, the guests said they understood it well. Since the guests wanted to buy a kitchen knife as a souvenir, our last stop was the Kappabashi shopping street, where we concluded the tour.

A Licensed Guide's Report The weather was good, and since a Suica card had already been arranged, we were able to move through the itinerary smoothly. Throughout the tour, the guests took many photos, so the pace was relaxed. At Nezu Shrine, I explained about Shinto. The guests were more interested in the scenery and taking photos than in the explanations. In Sendagi and Yanaka, before 11:00 the shops did not have much on display yet, so there was not much shopping. The guests were interested in the temples. In Asakusa, they enjoyed drawing omikuji fortunes. For lunch, the guests preferred a place without much fish, so I guided them accordingly. At Ameyoko, they took many photos. Since they wanted to look at watches, I guided them to Yodobashi Camera, and the tour ended at a location they specified.

A Licensed Guide's Report on Asakusa, the Imperial Palace, and Meiji Shrine The guests were a group visiting from Oceania, and it was their first time in Japan. Before coming to Tokyo, they had already visited Hokkaido, Kyoto, and Hakuba, and they planned to return home after sightseeing in Tokyo. At Senso-ji Temple, they listened with great interest to explanations about the differences between temples/Buddhism and shrines/Shinto, as well as Kaminarimon Gate. At the Imperial Palace, they were fascinated by historical explanations about the role of the Emperor, the Meiji Restoration, and the Edo Shogunate. At Meiji Shrine, they seemed deeply impressed by the quiet and solemn atmosphere, which was very different from Asakusa. Since they said they could do some shopping and dining in Shibuya and then return to their hotel on their own, we parted ways in Shibuya.     What Is a Private Naoshima Art Island Tour Like from Okayama? A Licensed Guide's Report From the morning, strong winds swept through the area, with news reports citing maximum instantaneous wind speeds of 35 meters per second, leaving me anxious that transportation from Okayama Prefecture to Naoshima might be cut off. I had prepared to contact the guests and [Japan Guide Agency (JGA Inc.)](https://www.j-g-a.org/) in case of an emergency, but fortunately the ferry from Okayama to Naoshima was not canceled. On the other hand, the JR Seto-Ohashi Line was suspended. The guests were a group visiting from South America. Under a winter sky with strong winds and hail, we first headed to the Valley Gallery, where a free ticket available to guests staying at the Benesse House hotel was valid, and we viewed the works inside the building and in the garden. After that, we decided to visit the Lee Ufan Museum, which had been left undecided, and thoroughly appreciated both the indoor and outdoor exhibits. We then walked to the Chichu Art Museum, where we admired the masterpieces, and since some of the guests said they were hungry, we had the meal at the museum café instead of the originally planned meal in the Honmura district after moving on. There was only one place to eat, so we waited about 20 minutes before finally being able to have our meal. Also, because it was both a public holiday and a Sunday, entering the exhibition areas was very crowded, and the waiting time alone looked likely to exceed 20 minutes. In that situation, thanks to a wise decision by one of the guests, we skipped the work of James Turrell, the "artist of light," whose works they had already seen in another country. By doing so, we were able to save about 40 minutes. Next, we took a bus, purchased a common ticket for the five Art House Project sites in the Honmura district, and toured four of them, but here too a quick and wise decision by one of the guests came into play: we decided against visiting Gohjinja Shrine and allocated the remaining time to the new art museum on Naoshima that had opened at the end of May last year. Ideally we would have liked to view it at leisure, but we hurried a little and stayed until just before closing, becoming the last visitors to leave the museum. In this way, the guests were able to enjoy a nearly fully satisfying tour. Looking back, the tour with such an amiable and cheerful group, along with very bright younger members, warmed my heart and made me forget the cold. In particular, one of the younger guests was not shy at all and actively spoke to me in English. At the museums, they walked around while sketching copies of paintings and other works. I thought such a sight was very rare. Moreover, they surprised me by writing their own name in katakana and occasionally speaking Japanese. Seeing this, I felt that their future is something to look forward to.

The group included many younger members ranging in school age, and the tour was lively and energetic throughout. At Itsukushima Shrine, I explained the proper etiquette for worship, and although the sequence took a little time given the size of the group, everyone listened attentively. At the Peace Memorial Park, there was some variation in the level of interest in the exhibits, so I split the group into those who wished to view them and those who did not, setting a meeting point for each, which allowed us to proceed through the itinerary efficiently overall. It was a day in which I focused on flexible arrangements while being considerate of everyone in the group.

    What's a Private Day Trip from Kyoto to Osaka's Namba and Dotonbori Like? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were a group visiting from Oceania. At their request, the main highlight of the day was Namba (Dotonbori and the anime district). This was not their first time in Japan, and some of the guests wanted to buy anime and video games, while others were interested in history and had Kyoto sightseeing as their goal. Today they came for a day trip from Kyoto by Shinkansen. The meeting point was a hotel near Shin-Osaka Station, chosen as a quick and convenient spot. When they mentioned they would take the 6:00 p.m. Shinkansen back to Kyoto, I insisted that this was no good — that they absolutely had to stay in the Dotonbori area after 6:00 p.m. to enjoy ramen, okonomiyaki, or the pork buns from 551 Horai before heading back. I told them passionately that seeing Dotonbori at dinnertime would show them the true energy of Osaka Minami and Dotonbori, known as "the nation's kitchen"! "Oh, we'll do that!" some of the guests replied. As you may know, in Namba there is a small bridge famous for the Glico sign, called Ebisu Bridge, spanning the Dotonbori River. It is commonly known as "Hikkake Bridge." When the Hanshin Tigers win the championship, young people jump from this bridge into the river, and it has long been a well-known spot where young people strike up conversations. It is a curious place that has stayed the same for ages, and my explanation of it went over very well. One of the guests was studying Japanese and had mastered hiragana. We spoke a little in Japanese, though it did not quite get through. As usual, I taught them "ookini," which was a hit and made for a fun and enjoyable day.

    What Can You See on a Full-Day Private Tour of Tokyo? A Licensed Guide's Report It was a warm day with no rain, so the tour proceeded smoothly. We started by purchasing a one-day subway pass at Shinjuku Station. Asakusa was extremely crowded, and there were long lines at both Senso-ji Temple and Asakusa Shrine, so we did not visit them for worship. The guests enjoyed shopping and drawing omikuji fortunes. We had lunch at a sushi restaurant in Akihabara. The system was efficient and quick, which was great. We went as far as the entrance of Takeshita Street in Harajuku, but turned back because it was crowded, and instead viewed the Shibuya Scramble Crossing. After that, the guests bought some toys on the 5th and 6th floors of Shibuya Parco and at a nearby Disney Store, then returned to the hotel by taxi, and the tour concluded. Tip received.

    • 10:00 Waiting at Hotel Kyoto, but received contact from the guest that they would be late, departed the Hotel at 10:40 ➡ By taxi, Fushimi Inari Taisha (11:10~12:10) ➡ By train, Café → Sanjusangendo (13:10~14:00) ➡ By taxi, Yakiniku lunch (14:30~15:30) ➡ By taxi, Kiyomizu-dera (16:00~16:40) ➡ The guest wanted to shop at Kiyomizu-zaka, so we ended here (16:40)

    What Is a Private Kyoto Food-Focused Day Tour Like? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were a group visiting from North America. We departed 40 minutes behind schedule. Kyoto was cold that day, with snow occasionally fluttering in the air, and while the guests, who came from a place with a mild climate year-round, were happy to see snow, they seemed to find the cold difficult to handle — though the younger members of the group were thrilled. Since they had not yet had their daily morning coffee, we stopped at a café we passed by. They were delighted to learn that it happened to use coffee beans from their home region as well. The guests showed a strong interest in food, eating quite a lot at the food stalls of Fushimi Inari Taisha and at a sweets shop on the way to the station. For lunch they requested yakiniku, so we went to a major yakiniku chain restaurant. This tour was mainly centered on food.

    What's an Off-the-Beaten-Path Private Tour of Tokyo Like? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were visitors from North America who were planning to stay in Tokyo for several days on their way to a trip in Southeast Asia. Since they had already visited the major sights on a private car tour the previous day, they requested that I show them off-the-beaten-path places instead, and I guided them accordingly. With the lingering atmosphere of the New Year season, spots such as Nezu Shrine and Shibamata Taishakuten were more crowded than expected, but the guests were delighted, saying these were exactly the kind of places they had hoped to see. The weather was fine, though it was a windy and chilly day, which seemed to be just the right climate for guests coming from North America.
