    What's a Private Tokyo Food and Culture Tour Like? A Licensed Guide's Report on Tsukiji, Asakusa, and Yanaka I guided a friendly group visiting from North America. The guests were very responsive, delighted by every part of the tour. They mentioned that they own a farm and enjoy horseback riding. At the Tsukiji Outer Market, they enjoyed fatty tuna (otoro), mini meat buns, and shumai, and they had tempura at the food court in the fish market area. They ate the variety of tempura vegetables with great curiosity and interest. At Sensoji Temple, they drew omikuji fortunes and received omamori charms. They loved the quiet streets of Yanaka, and they were very pleased at Nezu Shrine, which happened to enshrine a deity that felt perfect for them. After the tour, since the guests were returning to their hotel, I directed them to Todaimae Station, which required no transfers, and the tour came to an end.

    What Can You See on a Private Hiroshima and Miyajima Day Tour? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were a group visiting Hiroshima from Oceania, with their main trip centered on skiing in Niseko. They come together to enjoy skiing in Niseko every year, and they were a close-knit group, making it a tour full of laughter. Since snow remained on the roads and there was concern about slipping, we kept a relaxed pace and focused on two locations: Peace Memorial Park and Miyajima. At Peace Memorial Park, the guests listened attentively to my explanations and even kindly responded to elementary school students who came to interview them, making them very pleasant guests. The okonomiyaki for lunch was well received, and at Miyajima they also enjoyed tempura momiji manju and sake. For transportation we used a variety of options including the streetcar, high-speed boat, ferry, and JR, so the guests were able to enjoy the public transportation within Hiroshima.

    Can You Do a Private Day Trip from Tokyo to Kyoto by Bullet Train? A Licensed Guide's Report Today's guests were visitors from North America. They mentioned that in the area where they live, the highest temperature in January is around 20 degrees Celsius. As they happened to visit Japan during an especially cold period, they kept saying, "It's cold, it's cold." However, snow was very rare for the guests, and it seemed to lift their spirits quite a bit. The guests came on a day trip from Tokyo, but because of the snow the bullet train was delayed, so we met about 20 minutes later than scheduled. After the tour, the guests had a reservation for a maiko and geiko show at the Kyoto Craft Center, so I explained how to get there by bus before we parted ways.

    What Is a Private One-Day Kyoto Tour in Winter Like? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were visiting Japan for the first time from South America. A travel agency was involved as an intermediary, but communication with the agency was quite difficult. In addition, although I contacted the guests directly after they arrived in Japan, separate information also came from the agency, so I had to coordinate with both parties, which was very time-consuming. Among the original itinerary items, the guests had already visited Kinkaku-ji on their own the previous day, which I learned about through the agency, and this kind of confusion continued until the end. The agency had booked a tea ceremony experience with a kimono, but it turned out to be only a happi coat worn over the guests' clothes rather than a full, authentic experience. Even so, the guests seemed to enjoy it. Snow had accumulated from the previous day, so I had to take great care while walking in the morning. In the afternoon the snow began to melt, so there were no problems. It would be helpful to know in advance, when accepting a tour, whether a travel agency is involved as an intermediary, though I wonder if that might reduce the number of guides willing to take it on. Even so, there have been many cases where having an agency in between has created difficulties. The photo was taken at Kitano Tenmangu Shrine.

    What Is a Private Tokyo Day Tour Like? A Licensed Guide's Report on Koishikawa Korakuen, Asakusa, and Tsukiji The guests were visitors from North America. The highlight of the tour was Koishikawa Korakuen Garden, which we visited first. The plum blossoms had only just begun to bloom, but there were plenty to enjoy for both their appearance and their fragrance. The weather was fine, and I believe the guests were able to relax in this urban oasis. Asakusa was more crowded than expected, likely due to the Lunar New Year and school trips, but this may have made a nice contrast with Koishikawa Korakuen Garden, which we had visited in the morning. In Tsukiji, after taking them to Honganji Temple, I guided them along the shops on Higashi-dori, including a knife shop, and ended the tour in front of a recommended sushi restaurant.

    What Is a Private Guided Tour of Hiroshima and Miyajima Like? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were a group visiting from Oceania. Some of the guests enjoyed games and anime, which is why they chose to visit Hiroshima. At the memorial for the student soldiers, when I explained that "young people not much older than you were sent off to war and forced to give up their futures," the guests looked genuinely astonished. At Miyajima, I spoke about the differences between Shinto and Buddhism and the remarkable skill of traditional shrine carpenters, which impressed the guests greatly, and I was able to witness them picking up a rice scoop. That afternoon, it began to snow very heavily, and although I searched for a place on Miyajima where they could buy a jacket, I could not find one, so as an alternative I suggested, "Let's warm up with hot matcha and momiji manju in a cafe." This idea worked out well, and we managed to complete the day. During the drive, we shared stories about our homes and pets and memories from our school days, getting to know one another, and I enjoyed myself as well.

During the tour, snow began to flurry, and walking outside was cold and challenging, but some of the guests were seeing snow for the first time and were delighted. Although they do not eat fish, they wanted to see the market, so we went to Tsukiji, where they enjoyed tempura at the fish market food court. They said they would come again another day. When I took them to a Japanese confectionery shop, they bought some Japanese sweets. At Ueno, the plum blossoms were partly in bloom and looked lovely. Since the latter part of their trip would be spent on the places the guests wanted to visit and on shopping, they wanted to experience history and culture today, so we visited shrines and temples, and they seemed to have achieved their goal. One of the guests loves sweets very much, and as we passed a monaka ice cream shop in Yanaka, we enjoyed it together. After Meiji Shrine, they planned to explore Harajuku on their own, so they told me I could finish before the scheduled time, and I took them to the entrance of Takeshita Street, where the tour ended. On parting, they gave me the almond chocolate that I had mentioned I liked at the confectionery shop, and their kind gesture warmed my heart.

    Title: What's a Private Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park Tour Like? A Licensed Guide's Report The guest was a visitor from Oceania. Right after we met, the guest gave me a mug as a small gift. The guest wished to learn about the history and culture to make use of it, and also wanted to buy souvenirs to bring home. At the Peace Memorial Park, I placed particular emphasis on the memorial monument dedicated to the mobilized students, vividly conveying what school education and the daily lives of students were like at that time. At the Children's Peace Monument, I explained the story of the paper cranes made by the classmates of Sadako Sasaki, along with how elementary school children in Hiroshima study peace today. The guest listened with very strong interest and asked many questions. Answering them, we were able to have a genuine two-way conversation. At SOGO, we sampled famous Hiroshima sweets and local specialties, and we were also lucky enough to drop by a food event that happened to be taking place, savoring fine products from various regions. Finally, the guest purchased a pair of Japanese lacquered chopsticks, saying it might make a nice surprise, and left Hiroshima having enjoyed the visit thoroughly.

    What Can You See on a Short Private Tokyo Tour? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests came from Europe, and they enjoyed sightseeing in Tokyo and Kyoto together during their travels. It was a very cold day with some snow in the air, but they said it was colder back home, so we were able to complete the itinerary without any trouble. Although it was not part of the original plan, they mentioned that they had gone to the East Gardens of the Imperial Palace the previous day but found it closed, so I promptly took them there. At Kappabashi, they wanted to purchase a kitchen knife, but since they had not brought their passport, they decided to visit again on Thursday when they returned to Tokyo to make the purchase. For lunch, since a member of the group did not eat meat, I took them to a restaurant that could accommodate this. It was a short four-hour tour, but I believe the guests were fully satisfied.

    What Is a Private Tour to Okawa Elementary School and the Kamaya Area from Sendai Like? A Licensed Guide's Report This was a tour where I felt the guest's deep personal connection, as they had specified "Okawa Elementary School and the Kamaya area" right after the assignment was made. When I asked what had first made them aware of Okawa Elementary School, they said they had read a book by a British author who had visited and reported on the area many times, and they wanted to see the site in person to understand why so many students had lost their lives. Remembering a previous email that had mentioned Iwaki in Fukushima, I asked whether they had visited the area around the Fukushima nuclear plant, and they said that since it was not somewhere reachable by Shinkansen, they had come directly from Tokyo to Sendai. I explained that many households in the Kamaya area have since relocated and much of it is now vacant land, so our visit would center on Okawa Elementary School, and we traced the footsteps of the students who had died. We stood in the schoolyard where the 50 minutes between the earthquake and the tsunami were spent, climbed the hill behind the school where survivors had escaped, and also went to the triangular area toward which the victims had headed. Okawa Elementary School became a legal precedent for the management systems of schools nationwide through a Supreme Court ruling, but ultimately, I spoke as I was asked about how education in "tsunami tendenko" — the idea that each individual student should evacuate on their own initiative to save their own life — had not been carried out, and I gave the often-cited example of an elementary school in Kamaishi City to discuss the importance of disaster education. After looking at the topography of the Kamaya area at the memorial hall, the guest said they wanted to go to the mouth of the Kitakami River, but when I explained that the road in front of the elementary school does not run along the river, they pointed at the map and said they would like to see Nagatsura Bay beside the river mouth, so I asked the driver and we went as far as we could. There was a seawall so we could not see the very edge of the river mouth, but they seemed satisfied. Since there was nothing in the surrounding area, we stopped at a roadside station along the way for a restroom break. Inside the shop, the guest found some beer and asked whether it was local, so I told them about a craft beer made from hops grown along the Kitakami riverside in Ishinomaki, which they seemed to buy. At Matsushima Rikyu, the guest had been looking forward to an event featuring sake and oysters and asked many questions about sake. As they wanted to learn various things about sake, it became an impromptu sake lesson. They also asked about the characteristics of Matsushima oysters, and when I said that raw oysters can be eaten in Matsushima, they said they would try them and polished off three oysters in the shell. They also enjoyed 10 of the 15 varieties of sake offered at the event. On the way back, we drove past a spot overlooking Sendai Port, so I spoke as I was asked about how my home is nearby and what the area around Sendai Port was like at the time of the tsunami. It has already been 15 years, but this tour suddenly brought back memories of how absorbed I was in those days. As the guest wanted to eat sushi for dinner, I told them about Sushi Street inside Sendai Station. I was relieved to see their smile and hear they had had a great time.
