What Can You See on a Private Tsukiji, Nezu, and Meiji Shrine Walking Tour in Tokyo? A Licensed Guide's Report I guided a group visiting from North America. Through email exchanges beforehand, we settled on visiting Tsukiji, Nezu Shrine, Yanaka, Meiji Shrine, and Shinjuku Kabukicho, and after confirming once more in the morning we began the tour. What the guests enjoyed most today was being able to see wedding brides and grooms three times in a row — at Tsukiji Honganji, Nezu Shrine (where we could even take photos of colorful uchikake wedding kimono), and Meiji Shrine. Since we had already seen weddings at Tsukiji and Nezu, I said "You are very lucky, and good things may come in threes," and it turned out exactly that way, which delighted the guests. At Tsukiji Honganji, other visitors seemed to be holding back and not approaching the altar because of the wedding preparations, but when I asked the temple staff, they said "The ceremony itself hasn't started yet, so it's perfectly fine. Photos are welcome too," so we were able to go all the way inside. At the market they enjoyed tuna nigiri and mitarashi dango, and the mitarashi sauce was a particular favorite. Unusually for guests, they had not experienced "matcha" or "sake," so one of them tried matcha at Nezu and sake in Golden Gai, both of which received high praise. At Nezu Shrine, both of them bumped their heads on the red torii gates while passing through, but had fun and took photos. For lunch, there were five groups waiting at a restaurant, but we were told the terrace seats were immediately available, and since the weather was fine and warm we decided right away, and both of them finished the ginger pork set meal that I recommended. Finally, a bar in Golden Gai that I occasionally visit (on the second floor of the fourth street) happened to be open, so we stopped by. They serve customers without a table charge from Thursday to Sunday between 15:00 and 18:00 (today there was a complimentary Japanese tea service), which may be useful for future guiding. Thinking it was the end of the day, I decided to have a beer, and since I have a low tolerance for alcohol my face turned bright red, which made the guests laugh as always — perhaps it is unusual. We were able to talk about a wide range of topics, including education-related matters, employment prospects for university students, and running a bar in Shinjuku, and at the end the guests said, "Today was a lot of fun. Thank you," and we parted at the ticket gate of Shinjuku Station on the Marunouchi Line. Blessed with good weather, it was a delightful day.

Title: What Can You See on a Private One-Day Tour of Tokyo Before a Cruise? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were a group of friends from North America. They were spending a day sightseeing in Tokyo just before departing on a 10-day cruise from Yokohama Port two days later. In line with their prior requests, the tour began at the Shibuya Scramble Crossing. Although it was a weekday morning and the crowds were relatively light, they had been looking forward to visiting this spot and took many photographs. Next, wishing to see traditional Japanese life, they went to Nezu. At Nezu Shrine, I explained the differences between temples and shrines, the origins of Shinto, and its influence on Japanese culture. Since they planned to visit various temples and shrines during their cruise, they said this background knowledge was very helpful. Afterward, at Sensoji Temple in Asakusa, they seemed surprised by the large crowds and the many people dressed in kimono, and they appeared to enjoy the unique atmosphere of the area. For lunch, they enjoyed okonomiyaki, and although they had tried many Japanese dishes before, they said this was a flavor they were experiencing for the first time. Since they would also be visiting Hiroshima later, I recommended they try it again there. Finally, they enjoyed shopping at UNIQLO in Ginza before returning to Yokohama, where their hotel was located.

Title: What Is a Private Kyoto Day Tour with a Licensed Guide Like? A Guide's Report The reservation details listed a phone number from Oceania, but the guests were actually visiting from Europe, with one having relocated from Oceania. One of the guests worked as a professional photographer. Due to work, one of the guests had visited various parts of Japan many times in the past and mentioned a fondness for Asahi beer. For one of the guests, this was their first trip to Japan. Since one of the guests already had a fair amount of knowledge about Japanese history and enjoyed more in-depth explanations, I went into some detail—for example, why Tokugawa Yoshinobu returned political power to the Emperor, and the historical context behind it. They shared many interesting comments. What struck me as a particularly interesting perspective, perhaps due to a keen photographer's eye for observation, was the remark that each year inbound tourism increases, Japan's good old original landscapes are steadily disappearing, and more and more shops catering to inbound tourists are opening, which made them feel a little sad that the original scenery unique to Japan is gradually being lost. With that in mind, I decided to take them to a Zen temple's dry landscape garden, which is without a doubt a hidden gem, and they were delighted. There were hardly any other tourists, so the three of us had the magnificent dry landscape garden and pond-strolling garden all to ourselves. I had them enjoy about 5 to 10 minutes of seated Zen meditation, and I carefully explained the meaning of Zen meditation as well as the concept of wabi-sabi. It was also the season when Hina dolls are displayed, and a grand full set of Hina dolls was on display today, so I explained that as well. At the Kyoto Imperial Palace, we ended up mostly talking about topics not really related to the palace—Tokugawa Yoshinobu, Queen Elizabeth, the roots of the Japanese people, beer enjoyed in Europe, the shamisen, and Mongolian spots. When I explained that all the buildings within the Imperial Palace were dismantled during the air raids on the mainland in World War II and later restored after the war, they were surprised. We entered Sanjusangen-do just in the nick of time, so we were the very last visitors—meaning it was completely empty, and this was the first time even I had seen Sanjusangen-do with so few people. I gave a somewhat in-depth explanation about the Thousand-Armed Kannon Bodhisattva and the difference between a Nyorai and a Bodhisattva. Today was the birthday of one of the guests, so although we went a little over time, I offered it as a small present from me, and we parted ways at the hotel.

What Is a Private Kyoto Day Tour from Osaka Port Like? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests came to Japan from North America. On this day they visited Kyoto from Osaka Port. They were a cheerful group and walked with great energy throughout the day. The weather was fine, the cold had eased, and there were relatively few tourists, making it a very comfortable sightseeing experience. They were deeply impressed by Kinkaku-ji and Sanjusangen-do. They also praised how there was no litter on the streets of Kyoto and how clean the JR and subway stations were. From Higashiyama Sanjo to Sanjusangen-do, and from Sanjusangen-do to Kiyomizu-michi, we used a taxi to save time. The photo was taken in the garden of Sanjusangen-do.

What's a Private Osaka Day Tour Like for First-Time Visitors? A Licensed Guide's Report I guided guests who were visiting Japan for the first time. Since the list of places they wished to visit was quite long, I confirmed the itinerary when we met at the Hotel. As some of the guests found climbing stairs difficult, I made a point of using elevators and similar options as much as possible during the tour. When I mentioned that Osaka was once known as the Manchester of Asia, the guests were delighted. Since a birthday was coming up, we held a small celebration with takoyaki, a local soul food. It seemed the guests enjoyed the bonito flakes even more than the takoyaki itself. The guests also greatly admired the garden at Keitakuen.

Hello, my name is Mizuho Yoshikawa. Please call me Mizu and my name means rice and water in Japanese.
I’ve been a tour guide more than 200 times since the spring of 2023 in Kobe, Kyoto, Osaka, Nara, Wakayama and Kochi. My tour is always original and new, depending on the guest’s preferences, encounters, seasons and weather.
In Kyoto, one of my tours is to climb Mt. Kurama. It is about 1 hour from the city of Kyoto by train, it is a very quiet and beautiful mountain.
In Osaka, which is called the kitchen of Japan, I am also in charge of food tour.
In Nara, in addition to the Great Budda Hall, I guide guests to the temple with a really great view and Japanese wine, sake tasting.
Every city has a unique charming point.
The motto of my guiding is ” Ichigo Ichie” Once in a lifetime or seize the day. I learn this concept that the moment will never be the same again through tea ceremonies.
I like a tea ceremony that is part of the traditional Japanese culture and embodies the spirit of “omotenashi” or hospitality. Through the tea ceremony, we can feel the spirit of “omotenashi” that has been passed down to us from ancient times.
And I like to travel abroad and domestically, and I have been to 13 overseas countries and most of the prefectures in Japan. Traveling always gives me a new perspective, which is exciting and thrilling. Nowadays, we can learn a lot from the Internet, but traveling teaches us that it is important to have direct experience. When I travel, I feel that my five senses are infinitely expanded, and through my tour, I help all guests to have the same feeling in Japan.
I was born and raised in Kanagawa Prefecture, which is next to Tokyo Prefecture in eastern Japan. When I was little, I could see Mount Fuji from my backyard. There was also a rice field nearby, and I grew up listening to the croaking of frogs. Listening to the frogs and seeing the mountains made me feel very calm.
I moved to the city of Kobe, one of the Kansai areas in western Japan, which includes Kyoto, Osaka, Nara, and so on. I’m not from the Kansai area of western Japan, but I think that makes me sensitive to the differences between that area and the Kanto area, Tokyo, where I grew up.
Speaking of Kobe, you might be thinking of Kobe beef. Of course you do. There are also other sake breweries in Nada in Kobe. You can also go from Kobe city to Himeji Castle, also known as the White Egret Castle, which was the first in Japan to be listed as a World Heritage Site in 1993.

What Is a Private Tokyo Tour of Fukagawa Fudo-do and Hanayashiki Like? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests came from Oceania and were visiting Japan for the third time. Based on the requests received in advance, I guided them along a somewhat off-the-beaten-path route. They were very knowledgeable about Japan, and I believe they thoroughly enjoyed themselves. One of the guests in particular was extremely well-informed. When I spoke about Shingon Buddhism and Kukai at Fukagawa Fudo-do, they already knew about Mount Koya and the fact that some believers hold that Kukai is still alive, which was surprising. At Hanayashiki, the guests enjoyed themselves with a childlike sense of fun. One of the guests also rode the roller coaster and cheerfully told me how difficult it was to climb in because of long legs (they said they were 180 cm tall and could not quite fit into the roller coaster). Since many of the places were not part of the routes I usually guide, there were some challenging aspects for me, but I believe the guests were fully satisfied.

What's a Family-Friendly Private Tokyo Day Tour Like? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were a group visiting Tokyo. Some of the guests already had a mobile Suica, and after purchasing Suica cards for the others at Tokyo Station, we started the tour. Since I had heard that some of the guests were more interested in stories about Hachiko and Jizo statues than in shopping, I spent extra time on the Hachiko story in Shibuya, and at the end of the tour we visited the thousand Jizo statues at Zojoji Temple. In Tsukiji, one of the guests purchased a kitchen knife, so we stayed there a little longer than planned. At Tokyo Tower, the ninja goods shop on the second floor was very popular, and even those who said they do not usually shop much bought some of their favorite items there. Since the guests' accommodation was next to Tokyo Station, I took them to JR Hamamatsucho Station at the end and we parted ways.

I was born in Tokyo and was raised in the suburbs of Tokyo called Tama area. When I was in university, I majored in western dramas, so I am good at playing like an actor.
I like reading, listening to the music, and walking. I belong to several walking clubs, and sometimes I guide the members around Tokyo.
One of my strengths as a guide is that I know well about kombu, Japanese kelps. In December every year, I work at a traditional kombu shop in Tsukiji Fish Market. At that shop, I learned a lot of things related to kombu or other ingredients for washoku. I can explain the different characteristics of them to you.
Also, I am familiar with Japanese flowers and plants. If you stroll around a Japanese garden with me, I am sure you will be able to enjoy beautiful flowers and unique plants in every season.

What Can You See on a Private Tour of Yanaka and Odaiba in Tokyo? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were a group visiting from Oceania who had been to Japan several times before. They requested to see historic buildings and modern architecture off the usual tourist trail, and since one of the guests was into cars, they wanted an experience related to cars. Based on this, we decided to explore the Yanaka-Nezu-Sendagi (Yanesen) area, visit Tokyo Bay City Circuit, and Odaiba, and they enjoyed all of these. We had originally planned to visit the observation deck at the Fuji Television building at the end, but there was no beating the hungry members of the group. At the guests' request, and since some of them followed a plant-based diet, I guided them to a restaurant I had researched in advance, and with the guests' agreement, the tour ended at 15:30.

What's a Private Naoshima Art Island Tour Like? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were repeat visitors to Japan from Asia, having been to the country more than ten times. On this trip they stayed in Japan for about a week in February. After arriving at Kansai International Airport, they planned to travel through Osaka, Uno, Naoshima, Uno again, and Fukuoka before returning home. They knew an artist whose work was on display inside a museum park hotel on Naoshima, and they had hoped to see it, but unfortunately the hotel was under construction and they were unable to view it, which was a shame. They also mentioned that a friend of theirs had exhibited a work at last year's Setouchi Triennale. At the new Naoshima museum there is a work by Do Ho Suh, and they mentioned there is also a small museum where art is displayed at home, and that a work by Do Ho Suh is exhibited there. Both of the guests love art very much, but this was their first visit to Naoshima. They showed interest in visiting Teshima and Inujima next. They were a pleasant and cheerful group, and it seemed the guests enjoyed the day.

So, I have been a licensed guide for about 5 years. My favorite destinations are Naoshima, Teshima, Ritsurin Garden, the top of Mt. Yashima and so on.
