Title: What's a Private Kyoto Day Tour Including Arashiyama Bamboo Grove Like? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were visiting Japan for the first time and arrived by cruise ship. They requested the Arashiyama bamboo grove and asked me to plan an itinerary that included it, so I designed the tour to incorporate as many highlights as possible. The spring crowds had not yet built up, so we were able to see everything smoothly. The guests took a great many photographs. Around after lunch it began to rain and the temperature dropped, so I explained the Gion district from the car window. They were delighted to have been able to see so many things.

Hello, I am a tour guide, Chiyuki. If I write my name in Japanese, it means one thousand happiness. Please call me Chiyuki. I am looking forward to seeing you.

And I couldn’t be happier if I can help you to create memories of a wonderful trip.

Title: What Is a Rainy-Day Private Tour of Kochi City Like? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests wanted me to recommend places, so we decided on the destinations together. When it started to rain, I also considered indoor locations with roofs, but many were closed on Wednesdays, which made planning difficult. At Kochi Castle in the rain, the stone steps were slippery, which I felt could be challenging for some guests. Because of the rain, the entrance to the castle keep was crowded with people removing their shoes and storing their umbrellas. The guests mentioned that they hoped the facilities would provide more space when large tour groups overlap. The guests seemed tired from consecutive days of touring, but they were especially pleased with Kochi Castle and Chikurin-ji Temple.

Title: What Is a Private Nara Day Tour Like? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were visiting from North America. They enjoyed spending as much time as they liked with the deer. We took a relaxed, unhurried pace, letting the day unfold naturally rather than worrying about the schedule. One amusing moment was when the guests bought about five fine brushes and an ink stick at an old inkstone-and-brush shop just south of Tamukeyama Hachimangu Shrine. Even when I explained that "you can't really use the ink without an inkstone," they said, "We don't need an inkstone." Both the shop staff and I were left puzzled. The guests said they would return to Nara once the restoration of the five-storied pagoda at Kofukuji Temple is complete. Even if they really do come back, I will be quite advanced in years by then — who knows what will happen!

Hello! Thank you for choosing Nara! I bet you’ll love Nara. I specialize in Nara because Nara is the unique place where in one day you can cover the history and religions of Japan from the ancient times to the post war era while enjoying rambling in the UNESCO World Heritage park, having communication with lovely deer, surrounded with the beautiful nature.
I grew up in Nara, went university in Kyoto, enjoyed teaching at high schools and a university in Osaka. The three former capitals of Japan are home to me.
After retiring from teaching I began guiding so that I can meet various people from various corners of the world with a variety of cultures and backgrounds. Each time I guide, I find it hugely rewarding because I learn a lot from my guests sharing the history, culture and all that I know about Nara, Kyoto and Osaka.
I used to be a marathon runner, mountain climber and skier though I am not much of them anymore.
What I especially recommend is to stay in Nara a couple of days and enjoy communicating with friendly deer while visiting UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Nara in early morning, temples and shrines at night are well worth experiencing.

What Does a Private One-Day Tokyo Tour with a Licensed Guide Look Like? A Guide's Report The guests were older visitors from Europe who were traveling in Japan for the first time. After sightseeing in Tokyo, they planned to visit Hakone, Tsumago-juku, Magome-juku, Takayama, Kanazawa, Kyoto, and Hiroshima. At Ueno Park, they were delighted to see the early-blooming cherry blossoms. At Meiji Shrine, they seemed impressed by the quiet and solemn atmosphere, which contrasted greatly with Shibuya. At the Imperial Palace, they listened with great interest to historical explanations about the role of the Emperor, the Meiji Restoration, and the Edo Shogunate. At Senso-ji Temple, they were very interested in explanations about the differences between temples and shrines, as well as the Kaminarimon Gate. They were also delighted to happen to see the Golden Dragon Dance held at Senso-ji Temple that day. Since I responded exactly according to the guests' wishes, I believe they were satisfied.

Title: What Is a Private Osaka and Kobe Cruise Shore Excursion Like? A Licensed Guide's Report Today's guests were visitors from North America. They mentioned they had visited Japan a few times before. Their cruise ship reportedly had 300 staff members and 50 passengers on board. The guests said they disliked crowds. The tour meeting time was 10:00 a.m., but the guests did not appear. When I contacted them, they said, "We'll be about 15 minutes late. No need to contact us again." The guests arrived about 30 minutes late, and afterward we went to Osaka Castle. Since I had asked the guests to purchase online tickets in advance, entry into the castle was smooth. When we exited the elevator on the fifth floor, there were many tourists. The guests said, "We dislike crowds, so we won't go to the upper floors. Let's leave the castle." For this reason, we left the main tower and headed to Kuromon Market. Kuromon Market was also crowded with people, but the guests did not mind the crowds here. We visited many shops, and at their favorite stores they ate and drank a great deal, including sake, sushi, tempura, gyoza, and tonkatsu. Prices at Kuromon Market are quite high, but the guests did not seem to mind. After this, we had planned to go to the Nunobiki Herb Garden in Kobe. However, the guests said, "We won't go to the herb garden. We want to buy Junmai Daiginjo sake at a liquor store," so we returned to Kobe and went to the Hakutsuru Sake Brewery Museum. However, when a staff member said, "As the rice polishing ratio increases, Daiginjo sake takes on a fruitier taste," the guests said, "We don't like fruity sake," and decided not to make a purchase, so we returned directly to the port terminal. The guests behaved quite freely, but along the way we were able to make a reservation at a Kobe beef restaurant, and they seemed reasonably satisfied with the tour.

Title: What's a Private One-Day Tokyo Tour Like? A Licensed Guide's Report on Shinjuku Gyoen and Nezu Shrine The guests were visiting from North America and had been staying in Tokyo since a couple of days earlier, having traveled through various countries by cruise ship. For one of the guests, this was a second visit to Japan, but as the previous trip had not allowed for sightseeing, this was effectively their first time exploring Tokyo. This was also the group's first visit to the city, and at Nezu Shrine they enjoyed taking photos at the many Instagrammable spots. The day before, they had joined a tour of the Fuji Five Lakes and Oshino Hakkai, so today was their first day of sightseeing within the city. I had consulted with the guests by email beforehand and planned the route mainly around places they were likely to enjoy. Although it was a little early for cherry blossoms at Shinjuku Gyoen, the guests, who enjoy photography, eagerly photographed the various flowers throughout the garden. Since some of the guests had undergone knee surgery some years ago, I guided them while including appropriate rest breaks, and we were able to complete the tour successfully.

What Is a Private Kyoto Day Tour with a Licensed Guide Like? A Guide's Report on Nijo Castle, Kinkaku-ji, and Ryoan-ji The guests were a group visiting from Europe. Their relationships seemed complex and potentially private, so I did not ask about them. One of the guests was returning to Kyoto for the first time in many years, while the others were visiting Kyoto for the first time. I took them to Nijo Castle, Kinkaku-ji, and Ryoan-ji. Partway through the tour the rain became heavy, so the guests bought umbrellas to stay dry. One of the guests tends to panic in crowds, so the crowds at Kinkaku-ji seemed difficult for them. Since one of the guests did not understand much English, I explained only the key points in Spanish. One of the guests had long studied Buddhism and was very knowledgeable about Japanese religion and Zen. Some of the guests especially enjoyed Ryoan-ji, while another guest particularly appreciated Ryoan-ji and the wall paintings at Nijo Castle.

    • After meeting in the lobby of the Hotel Tokyu, we spent a few minutes confirming and discussing where to go. As they said they liked gardens and temples/shrines, they requested Meiji Shrine and the Imperial Palace. Before boarding the train, I explained Taro Okamoto's mural and looked down on the Scramble Crossing while explaining Shibuya Station. We took the train to Harajuku, walked a little along Takeshita Street, admired the garden of Togo Shrine, and then headed to the main destination, Meiji Shrine. We skipped the paid garden zone since both the pond and well had dried up. After praying, taking photos, and buying an amulet and omikuji fortune, we took the Chiyoda Line to Hibiya to head to the second requested destination, the Imperial Palace. After seeing Nijubashi Bridge, we moved to the East Gardens. Rather than the entire grounds, we admired the Ninomaru zone and then walked to Tokyo Station. We took photos of the station building and returned to Shibuya by train. They said they would have lunch at the hotel after the tour ended.

What Is a Private Tokyo Walking Tour Like Before Departure from Narita? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests had already visited major cities such as Kyoto and Hiroshima by cruise, and Tokyo was their final destination before departing from Narita. Since they had already finished their shopping, the itinerary focused on sightseeing and appreciation. As they were not familiar with the history of Edo, I believe the itinerary allowed them to learn about Tokyo in chronological order, including the transition from the Edo period to the Meiji era and the Westernized architecture of Tokyo Station. They were delighted to see a side of Japan different from the other cities. They had also joined group bus tours from the cruise in other cities, but were not aware of goshuin (temple and shrine seal stamps). When I explained them this time, they said with some regret, "I wish I had known before going to Kyoto, I would have loved to collect them." They told me that a private guide is indeed better than a group tour.

Hi! I’m Akiho. I live in a small seaside town about an hour from Tokyo. I moved here from Tokyo about 10 years ago because I wanted to raise my children in a quiet, nature-rich environment. I love exploring local shopping streets and hidden shrines around Tokyo and Kanagawa, so I especially enjoy introducing small, family-run food shops and local traditions.
I specialize in planning tours based on what my guests want to see or buy. If there’s anything special you’re interested in, please feel free to let me know! My daughters are teenagers now, so I’m also pretty familiar with the latest trendy shops and fun spots in Tokyo.

What's a Private Tokyo Tour Like? A Licensed Guide's Report on Asakusa, Yanaka, and Harajuku The guests came from North America for a leisure trip. They were in good spirits with no signs of jet lag. In Asakusa, they enjoyed ningyo-yaki, a strawberry candy apple, a matcha drink, and some shopping. Since the weeping cherry tree in front of Hozomon Gate had only just started to bloom, I took them to Chomyoji Temple in Yanaka. There was hardly anyone there, so they could take photos as if the place were reserved just for them, which delighted them greatly. One of the guests was fond of cats, so we strolled around and looked at various shops in Yanaka Ginza. After that, we went to Meiji Shrine, and I introduced them to the UNIQLO in Harajuku and a pork cutlet cafe on Takeshita Street before saying goodbye.

Title: What Is a Private Kanazawa Walking Tour Like? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were a group visiting from North America who had been to Japan several times and were studying Japanese. Since there was some time before the tour of Myoryuji Temple, I introduced the shuriken throwing at the ninja museum in the Nishi Chaya district, and the group wanted to try it and enjoyed the experience. Although Kanazawa Castle Park was not originally included in the plan, the guests had not visited it themselves and would not have another chance to see it aside from that day, so before the tour began I recommended it and adjusted the itinerary to include it. The guests thoroughly enjoyed the tour.
