Private Tokyo Tour with a Licensed Guide: What's a Day in Shibamata, Yanaka, and Kappabashi Like? The guests were visitors from Oceania. This was their second trip to Japan, and they were once again enjoying various parts of Tokyo. They mentioned that they had attended cooking classes twice. At Tsukiji, they purchased an expensive fruit knife at Togen Masahisa, and at the restaurant CIBI in Yanaka, they bought a Japanese home-cooking recipe book written for international readers. In Shibamata, they tried a set of grilled eel over rice and thinly sliced raw carp. They found the pickles very delicious. The yokan sweet, however, seemed too sweet for their taste. When I explained that Nezu Shrine had been relocated and rebuilt from Sendagi by the "Dog Shogun" Tsunayoshi, they ended up thinking I had said "Duck Shogun." 💦 Since one of the guests was not wearing socks under their sandals, they hesitated to enter Taishakuten, but I recommended it as the highlight of Shibamata, and they were deeply impressed by the intricate wood carvings. Just then, an earthquake alert rang out on the mobile phones, and the temple announced that "a major earthquake has occurred," though we did not feel any shaking. Kappabashi Kitchen Town was a first for me to guide, and I explained that the name originates from the legend that a kappa (water sprite) of the Sumida River helped a man named Kappaya Kihachi. Just then, the Meteorological Agency announced that the earlier emergency earthquake alert had been a mistake, so I shared the proverb "even a kappa can be swept away by the river" (meaning even an expert can make mistakes). I walked them through the main shops of the tool street, and since they wanted to browse on their own afterward, we parted ways. It seems they are likely to fill a suitcase with cooking tools. A notable stop on the tour was Taishakuten Temple in Shibamata. Taishakuten, formally known as Daikyoji Temple, is a historic Nichiren Buddhist temple famous for its extraordinarily detailed wood carvings that adorn the main hall, depicting scenes from the Lotus Sutra. The temple and its approach, lined with traditional shops selling snacks and crafts, offer visitors a nostalgic glimpse into old Tokyo, and the serene inner garden is another highlight worth exploring.

Private One-Day Kyoto Tour Covering Fushimi Inari, Kiyomizu-dera, Nijo Castle, and Arashiyama: A Licensed Guide's Report This was a private tour for guests visiting from North America. The weather forecast had predicted rain in the morning, so I was concerned, but conditions gradually improved. The itinerary I had shared in advance included Fushimi Inari, Kiyomizu-dera, Nijo Castle, and Kinkaku-ji. Since the guests also wished to see places other than temples and shrines, I suggested Nishiki Market and a samurai museum, but they were not interested. As a result, we chose Arashiyama, where the bamboo grove can be seen, as our final stop. I also recommended lunch along the way, but they said they had eaten a large breakfast and did not want any. At a cafe in Nijo Castle, they enjoyed some soft-serve ice cream and laughed, saying, "This is our lunch." As for transportation, we used the Keihan line plus the subway only for the stretch from Fushimi Inari to Nijo Castle, and took taxis for everything else. The guests were satisfied with the tour. A notable stop on the tour was Arashiyama, a scenic district in the western part of Kyoto famous for its bamboo grove, where tall stalks of bamboo line the walking paths and create a striking natural corridor. The area is also known for its traditional temples, the Togetsukyo Bridge spanning the Katsura River, and beautiful seasonal scenery that attracts many visitors throughout the year.

What's a Half-Day Private Tour of Asakusa and Hamarikyu Gardens Like Before a Cruise? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were visiting from North America. They were very warm, kind, and unique people, so even though it was only a half day, it was a great pleasure to spend time with them. Since they had to board a cruise ship after the tour, we had to keep an eye on the time throughout. For that reason, we only saw the main highlights of Asakusa, but the conversation flowed thanks to prompts from my side and questions from theirs, and we had a fun and interesting time. At Senso-ji Temple, one of the guests drew a "bad luck" fortune, and we laughed heartily at the line saying "you will spend money and become poor." Indeed, afterward, when praying twice at Senso-ji Temple and Asakusa Shrine, they tossed coins into the offering box, so perhaps the fortune came true. The other guest drew "great luck," so they did not pray. Also, when asked what the ornamental giboshi caps looked like, one of the guests playfully answered "a woman's chest," just as a previous guest had. Today, for some reason, high school students were performing a hula dance at Asakusa Shrine, and the guests watched for a while, saying "They're good." On the subway heading to Shimbashi, we got so caught up in a discussion about the Republican and Democratic parties that we missed our stop and went all the way to Toranomon, for which I apologized. Incidentally, when I asked why the Democrats are blue and the Republicans are red, the guests could not answer, so we looked it up on Google and everyone said "I see." At Hamarikyu Gardens, while admiring the scenery, we walked around the pond and talked about paid leave rates, religion, television viewing, and various other topics until we reached the 300-year-old black pine. When I asked how many trees they thought there were, they answered "fifteen" and "twenty," just as I expected, and were surprised to learn it was a single tree, as well as impressed by the beautiful shape of the pines in the garden and the craftsmen who tend to them. Since I had never been to Harumi Pier, I was allowed to go with them by taxi, where we parted ways. The cruise ship was said to carry about 1,000 passengers since it can pass under Rainbow Bridge, and we finished by waving to the guests as they boarded. After we parted, I received a thank-you message, and I am grateful to have met such wonderful guests. The guests also enjoyed themselves, saying "it was a wonderful afternoon," which is the best thing (in the morning they had joined a tour that only viewed the city through the car window).

They had arrived the day before, and since Tokyo was only on the itinerary for this one day, we focused on the highlights. Surrounded by over 100,000 trees donated from across Japan, it offers a peaceful contrast to the bustling city and is a popular place to observe traditional ceremonies and experience Japanese spiritual culture.

What's a Private One-Day Nagoya Tour Like? A Licensed Guide's Report on Nagoya Castle, Atsuta Shrine, and Osu The guests were a group visiting from South America. Since they were using an Airbnb, we met in front of a general apartment building. They were both energetic and fast walkers, which made getting around very easy and convenient. As we had not arranged the destinations in advance, we discussed the plan on the day and decided on Nagoya Castle, Noritake Garden, and Osu. At Nagoya Castle, they took many photos and asked eager questions. After Nagoya Castle, they enjoyed a miso katsu set meal at Kinshachi Yokocho. We had planned to visit Noritake Garden because of an interest in pottery, but they wanted to see Atsuta Shrine, so we went there instead. They took many photos there as well. In Osu, we ran short on time, and since they wished to explore Osu more on their own, I explained how to get back and ended the tour. They took many photos in various places and appeared to have a wonderful time. A notable stop on the tour was Nagoya Castle. Nagoya Castle is one of Japan's most famous castles, originally built in the early Edo period under the order of Tokugawa Ieyasu. It is especially well known for the pair of golden shachihoko, mythical tiger-headed fish ornaments, that adorn the top of its main keep and have become a symbol of the city. The castle grounds also feature the beautifully reconstructed Hommaru Palace, celebrated for its elegant paintings and refined wooden architecture.

What Does a Private One-Day Tokyo Tour Covering Tsukiji, Ueno, and Asakusa Look Like? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were seniors visiting from Oceania. They had arrived in Japan the previous day and checked into their hotel at night, but they showed no signs of fatigue and walked a great deal. We first visited Tsukiji Market, where they enjoyed the lively outer market and said they would like to return another day. On the subway to Ueno Station, I explained an overview of Japanese history and the differences between Shinto and Buddhism. I assisted them with exchanging their voucher for a Japan Rail Pass at the ticket center, but there were many foreign visitors waiting, so it took longer than expected. Afterward, we took a break at a café and had lunch at a sushi restaurant in Ameyoko. After moving to Asakusa, I explained the surrounding buildings from the rooftop terrace of the culture and tourism center. We proceeded from Kaminarimon Gate through Nakamise, past the five-story pagoda, and paid our respects at the main hall. As the tour time was running short, I escorted the guests back to the hotel by subway and concluded the tour. A notable stop on the tour was Senso-ji Temple in Asakusa. Senso-ji is Tokyo's oldest temple, founded in the 7th century, and is dedicated to Kannon, the Buddhist goddess of mercy. The approach to the temple begins at the iconic Kaminarimon Gate, with its massive red lantern, and leads through Nakamise, a shopping street lined with stalls selling traditional snacks and souvenirs, making it one of the most popular destinations in the city.

Title: What's a Private Tokyo Tour for Garden Lovers and Anime Fans Like? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were friends visiting from North America who wanted to avoid overly touristic spots. Since they enjoy gardens, we first visited Nezu Shrine. They seemed to love the quiet grounds and the row of torii gates, and took many photos. One of the guests was very fond of gardens and plants, and whenever they came across an unfamiliar plant, they often asked what kind of plant it was. At Yanaka Ginza, they were able to take their time at a newly opened drugstore and purchase skincare products. Another guest liked Gundam and Final Fantasy, so we went to a specialty shop in Akihabara dealing in Gundam and Final Fantasy merchandise, where they enjoyed shopping. As they liked sushi, we had sushi at a conveyor-belt sushi restaurant before heading to Shinjuku. In Shinjuku, they purchased a welcome item, and I guided them to a shop with a Final Fantasy store and café, where the tour concluded. The weather was lovely, and I believe they enjoyed the shopping. A notable stop on the tour was Nezu Shrine. Nezu Shrine is one of Tokyo's oldest shrines, known for its tranquil grounds and a picturesque tunnel of vermilion torii gates. The shrine is especially famous for its azalea garden, which bursts into color in spring, drawing many visitors who come to admire the blooms. Its peaceful atmosphere offers a quiet retreat from the busier parts of the city.

What's a Private Walking Tour of Kyoto's Gion and Higashiyama Like? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were from Oceania and were visiting Japan for the first time. They requested a tour focused mainly on Kyoto's traditional geisha districts, such as Gion and Pontocho. I took them to Kiyomizu-dera Temple (including Sannenzaka, Ninenzaka, Yasaka Pagoda, and Koshin-do), Yasaka Shrine, Gion (Hanamikoji and Gion Shirakawa), Pontocho, and Nishiki Market. Before visiting Yasaka Shrine, the guests needed a light bite, so they had a simple snack (onigiri rice balls). The weather was a clear, sunny autumn day, making it perfect for the tour. What impressed both of them the most was that, despite the huge crowds, Kiyomizu-dera Temple was their favorite. They also seemed to enjoy the Japanese-style lunch. A notable stop on the tour was Kiyomizu-dera Temple. Kiyomizu-dera is one of Kyoto's most famous temples, founded in the late 8th century and designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is renowned for its large wooden stage that juts out from the main hall, offering sweeping views over the cherry and maple trees below and the city of Kyoto in the distance. The approach to the temple, along the historic slopes of Sannenzaka and Ninenzaka, is lined with traditional shops and tea houses, making it a highlight of the Higashiyama district.
