What Is a Private Castle-Focused Tour in Japan Like? A Licensed Guide's Report
The group visited Japan, and every member had a deep interest in and affection for Japan, so I was constantly asked sharp and thoughtful questions. They had also been studying Japanese on their own, so by adding explanations of the meanings of Japanese words, I believe the tour became very rich in content. We spent a great deal of time exploring castle architecture in particular. As the season had also shifted to a slightly more comfortable climate, I was able to guide them slowly and in fine detail. The guests were all cheerful, the tour was filled with laughter, and we were able to finish in a very enjoyable mood. A notable stop on the tour was Japanese castle architecture, which the group explored at length. Japanese castles, built from the late medieval through the early modern period, are known for their elegant white or black keeps, massive stone foundations, and intricate defensive designs. Many castles feature multiple layers of gates, moats, and watchtowers, reflecting both military function and refined craftsmanship. Exploring a castle offers insight into the history of the samurai era, regional power, and the artistry of traditional Japanese construction.

Our guide Chiyuki was the best part of the trip. Super earnest, so generous with her knowledge of the history and culture. The tour had a lot to cover, from the sake making area to the Kobe Herb Garden Ropeway on the opposite side of the city, all in one afternoon. Miles to cover but never once did we feel rushed. We had lovely conversations along the way and tons of pictures to take home. Last but not least, when we requested for her recommendations of Kobe beef places, she pointed us to a top notch Kobe Beef Teppanyaki option – while prudently ensuring it was a value for money experience.
