What's a Private Walking Tour of Kyoto's Gion and Higashiyama Like? A Licensed Guide's Report

The guests were from Oceania and were visiting Japan for the first time. They requested a tour focused mainly on Kyoto's traditional geisha districts, such as Gion and Pontocho. I took them to Kiyomizu-dera Temple (including Sannenzaka, Ninenzaka, Yasaka Pagoda, and Koshin-do), Yasaka Shrine, Gion (Hanamikoji and Gion Shirakawa), Pontocho, and Nishiki Market. Before visiting Yasaka Shrine, the guests needed a light bite, so they had a simple snack (onigiri rice balls). The weather was a clear, sunny autumn day, making it perfect for the tour. What impressed both of them the most was that, despite the huge crowds, Kiyomizu-dera Temple was their favorite. They also seemed to enjoy the Japanese-style lunch.

A notable stop on the tour was Kiyomizu-dera Temple. Kiyomizu-dera is one of Kyoto's most famous temples, founded in the late 8th century and designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is renowned for its large wooden stage that juts out from the main hall, offering sweeping views over the cherry and maple trees below and the city of Kyoto in the distance. The approach to the temple, along the historic slopes of Sannenzaka and Ninenzaka, is lined with traditional shops and tea houses, making it a highlight of the Higashiyama district.
