What Is a Full-Day Private Tour from a Cruise Ship in Japan Like? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were a group of six visitors from North America arriving on a cruise ship. This was my first time guiding cruise ship guests, and I was very worried about whether I would be able to find them among as many as 2,700 passengers. There were many uncertain factors: the ship's port of call could change at the last minute, and the shuttle bus routes and times were not known until just before. Since I had exchanged messages about 30 times before meeting with the group's representative, we had communicated well, and we somehow managed to meet as planned. All six of the guests were very kind. At first I made a mistake with which train to board, but they were very tolerant and reassured me many times that it was fine. Since we lost about 30 minutes, I extended the tour by about another 2 hours and 30 minutes, but I decided not to charge an extension fee. Rain had been forecast all day, but it was not so bad, which was a relief. Also, I heard that the Peace Memorial Museum became so crowded that entry was stopped around 15:00, but because the guests had purchased digital tickets in advance, we were able to enter before 14:00 and got in fairly smoothly. It was quite crowded inside. Along the way, there were many spontaneous requests, such as wanting to buy certain items or needing to be taken to a store for a party dress. Although we went over time, I somehow managed to meet all of their requests. At the end, they gave me various souvenirs from a place I have fond memories of, and they parted with words of gratitude to me. It was a long day with many unexpected situations, so I was tired, but I experienced many things for the first time and gained a great deal of learning.

Hi! I am Kazuha from Onomichi City in Hiroshima Prefecture. Please call me Kazu chan. I was a teacher for 37 years, and retired last year. After that, I traveled a lot, and met a guide who made my travel much more interesting than other travel. It has become a life-time memory. So I decided to be an interpreter guide to help foreign tourists. I would love to help you to make your travel more interesting and exciting!
I have guided Onomichi, and two World Cultural Heritage sites :Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park, and Miyajima. Onomichi is my hometown and the starting point for the Shimanami-kaido to Shikoku Island. It prospered from the 12th century to the 19th century, and was not bombed during the war. So we can still enjoy finding unique Japanese culture while walking. Let’s explore Hiroshima and make your travel special!

    • Moved by train from Shijo Kawaramachi to Shijo Karasuma. Guided them to the subway at Shijo Karasuma and ended the tour

Title: What Is a Late-Afternoon Private Kyoto Tour Like? A Licensed Guide's Report On the day of the tour, the guests contacted me to say they wished to purchase a kimono and a doll. I was waiting at Kyoto Station for the 15:30 meeting time, but received a message via a messaging app saying they would be about 40 minutes late, so the tour started at 16:10. There was also an issue where a SUICA card could not be used because its processing had not been completed, but we somehow managed to purchase the desired items at a kimono shop and a doll shop within business hours. The guests said this was the main purpose of this Kyoto tour. It was a packed schedule: they departed from Tokyo early in the morning, visited Suzuka Circuit, then came to Kyoto, and were planning to return to Tokyo again. Everyone seemed tired, but they enjoyed walking briskly along Kyoto's main streets.

Title: What Is a Private One-Day Kyoto Tour Like in Cherry Blossom Season? A Licensed Guide's Report This was a private one-day tour in Kyoto for a group visiting from North America. It was a very warm day, with some of the cherry blossoms in bloom and the plum blossoms still visible, allowing everyone to enjoy the beautiful scenery. However, the places the guests wished to visit were all very popular spots, and they were surprised by the large crowds. On the approach to Kiyomizu-dera Temple, some of the guests became absorbed in shopping, which caused us to run short on time. As a result, the latter part of the itinerary had to be shortened, and in the case of Nishiki Market I simply guided them there. Afterward, since the guests planned to visit To-ji Temple on their own, I provided them with an explanation about it as well.

What Cherry Blossom Spots Can You See on a Private Tokyo Tour? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were visitors from North America. When I asked if they would like to see cherry blossoms, they said yes, so I guided them to famous cherry blossom spots. Chidorigafuchi was only about 30 percent in bloom, but there were fully blooming cherry blossoms throughout the Imperial Palace grounds, and I took many photos of the guests in front of the cherry trees. They had wanted to eat dango at Nakamise in Asakusa, and were very pleased to do so. For the Sumida walk they had hoped to take on foot, they observed the state of the cherry blossoms from the train and seemed satisfied. Their Skytree reservation was at 1:00, but since the time was extended, we finished by going to see the cherry blossoms at Ueno Park. Overall the cherry blossoms were about 40 percent in bloom, but because of the cherry blossom festival there were many food stalls, so we enjoyed a late lunch with beer and yakisoba before parting ways.

Title: What Is an 8-Hour Private Tokyo Tour Like? A Licensed Guide's Report from Japan Guide Agency The guests were visiting Japan for the first time from Europe. Some of the group were traveling through several Asian countries and were currently in Japan, planning to meet up and watch the Suzuka Circuit F1 race together. They also planned to visit Hakone, Kyoto, and Hiroshima, and to experience staying at a traditional Japanese ryokan. This was an 8-hour tour. Since one of the guests became a little short of breath when walking, I made sure we walked slowly. Even so, they kept their enthusiasm for sightseeing right to the end and walked energetically throughout. At Zojoji Temple, the Sangedatsumon Gate could not be passed through due to renovation work, but the cherry blossoms happened to be more than about 40% in bloom, which was very beautiful. The guests were deeply moved and took many photos. In Ginza, they said they would definitely like to come back to shop at the Mitsukoshi food hall and Kyukyodo that I introduced. They were pleased with every place we visited, but their excitement peaked especially at the piglet cafe on Takeshita Street and the robot-themed cafe in Shibuya. Whenever I introduced popular Tokyo spots such as teamLab, they relayed everything to another member of the group on their smartphone. At the end, once they had secured seats on the Ginza Line, I confirmed with them, "The terminal station arriving in 33 minutes is Asakusa, where your hotel is located," and we said our goodbyes.

What Is a Private Guided Tour of Hiroshima and Miyajima Like? A Licensed Guide's Report Rain had been forecast, but the weather managed to hold. One of the guests asked me to explain the history from the point when the two nations went to war up to the atomic bombing. In Miyajima, the guests had their names engraved on chopsticks as a souvenir. They asked me to help change the time on their return Shinkansen tickets, so I assisted with that. The guests were very interested in cities other than Hiroshima, in everyday life in Japan, and in Japanese history, and they asked many questions. They were a very friendly and lovely group. At the end, one of the guests gave me a hug and told me they had a wonderful time.

Hello, I’m Kyoko, a certified regional interpreter-guide for Hiroshima Prefecture. I was born, educated, and worked in Hiroshima while raising my children, and I absolutely love this city. I have a deep interest in learning about history and culture, and I enjoy exploring the city and trying out local foods. Meeting people from diverse backgrounds and chatting with them brings me great joy, so I’m really looking forward to helping make your trip to Hiroshima a wonderful and memorable experience.

Hiroshima is home to two UNESCO World Heritage Sites: the Atomic Bomb Dome and Itsukushima Shrine. The Atomic Bomb Dome is a poignant reminder of history, standing gracefully within a beautiful park. Walking through the park together, we can reflect on the powerful message of peace it conveys. Itsukushima Shrine, famous for its red torii gate floating in the sea, is located on a picturesque island. It’s a place where you can enjoy a truly relaxing and serene time.

I can also guide you to other popular tourist destinations, help you enjoy Hiroshima’s local delicacies such as okonomiyaki, oysters, and conger eel, or assist you with shopping.

I will do my utmost to ensure that your trip to Hiroshima becomes a wonderful and unforgettable memory.

Among the group, some spoke only Spanish, so I did not go into as much detail as I usually would in my explanations. Some of the guests wore ninja costumes and seemed to enjoy the experience. Heavy rain meant we occasionally had to take shelter. However, both Kumamoto Castle and Suizenji Jojuen Garden had cherry blossoms in nearly full bloom, so whenever the rain stopped, the guests took many photos and were delighted by the beautiful cherry blossoms. I truly feel that the cherry blossoms saved the day.

In 2016, I obtained the National Guide Certification and have been guiding mainly tours in Kumamoto City, but also in neighboring areas such as Aso, Takachiho, and Unzen. I have learned a lot from guiding and have had the invaluable experience of interacting with guests from many different countries. I love being a guide and also I think guiding job is physically wonderful because it is based on walking. I am interested in history, especially samurai culture. In Kumamoto, you can see the footprints of the castle lords, the Kato and the Hosokawa families. The Kato family is famous as strong warlords, while the Hosokawa family is famous as intellectuals who developed the culture of the samurai. Also, Kumamoto is one of the few cities in the world where all water is supplied by groundwater. Please enjoy Kumamoto’s history, culture, and water.

She took our interests into consideration and showed us a special Shinto temple and let us drink from the "long life" spring. She also explained how to do a Shinto prayer and took us for a walk where the gods lived. We had lunch at the perfect place–we wanted to eat good seafood–the seafood was fresh and the service fast and friendly. The fresh grilled scallops were the best I've tasted. Also, we got to try horse sashimi which is a specialty of Fukuoka I think. It was very good. We also toured Kumamoto Castle and the surrounding areas. We ended the tour at a restaurant that served the Kumamoto Wagyu special beef–from black cows! I'd highly recommend having Mieko guide you!

Title: What Is a Private Miyajima and Hiroshima Cruise Day Tour Like? A Licensed Guide's Report Because the guests disembarked early, we were able to explore Miyajima ahead of the other cruise passengers and enjoy it without getting caught in the worst of the crowds. They were also delighted that we could stop at a local restaurant for lunch. At the museum, however, there was a line unlike anything I had seen before after entering, perhaps because we overlapped with a large group. I adjusted our timing by having them watch testimony videos off to the side for a while, but the line did not get any shorter, and I truly felt just how many people come off the cruise ships. Since there was still quite a lot of time before the ship's departure, the guests said they wanted to look around the shopping street on their own after the tour, so I sent them the information about their return route via a messaging app and we parted ways.

Hiroshima is a city of rivers and the sea. Along the rivers Cherry trees line, and the calm Seto Inland Sea, dotted with islands, creates a stunning landscape. Also, the sea has many islands called “art islands” which have fantastic arts relating to the art festival “Setouchi Triennale”. In addition to our two World Heritage Sites, this area is rich in attractive resources. I hope many of you will come and experience this fascinating land. Personally, I am very passionate about modern art and enjoy sports like stand-up paddle boarding (SUP) on our rivers.
I look forward to meeting you, interacting with you, and also, learning from you!

Title: What Is a Private Walking Tour of Tsukiji, Koishikawa Korakuen, and Asakusa Like? A Licensed Guide's Report The tour started on time, and we walked from the Hotel to Tsukiji. At Tsukiji, the guests looked around with great interest, ate a large shrimp cracker along the way, and were amused by white strawberries, eating white strawberries on a skewer. They seemed to find them not as sweet as expected. At Koishikawa Korakuen, the guests took many photos and repeatedly said "beautiful!", appearing very satisfied. The weeping cherry blossoms were in bloom, which they also enjoyed. For lunch in Asakusa, I asked what they wanted and we went to a conveyor-belt sushi restaurant. We ate together at the counter, and they were satisfied, telling me it was "a good choice." While eating sushi, they each drank two bottles of cola, which had a certain international flair to it. After that, we visited Sensoji Temple and Asakusa Shrine, and then went to Kappabashi Kitchenware Street at the guests' request. As it was just about to turn 15:00, we parted ways there. They said they wanted to buy kitchen knives themselves. They seemed satisfied as well, and I think it was a good tour.

Hello, I’m Masaaki Kurata. I have been conducting walking tours in Asakusa, Ueno, Yanaka and the East Garden of Imperial Palace since I joined an English guide volunteer club in 2016. I worked for 2 U.S. based companies in Tokyo for 41 years and retired in 2023. I developed good communication skills with people from other countries in my long career in those 2 companies. I was born in the suburb of Tokyo and I’m familiar with Tokyo pretty much. Since I retired and do not work for a company any longer, I can be flexible in making itineraries. I really want to make tourists happy by making fun and interesting communication.

Title: What Is a Private Hiroshima Walking Tour Like? A Licensed Guide's Report The forecast called for intermittent rain today, but fortunately it never turned into heavy rain during the tour. The guests came down from their hotel room early, so we started a little ahead of the planned 12:00 start time. Since they would be staying in Hiroshima for three days, I introduced the travel pass, and they had already purchased it in advance. Getting off the bus went smoothly. When I mentioned Andersen (a bakery) inside Hiroshima Station, they said they wanted to buy something at the station, but I let them know we would also visit the main shop on Hondori. At the main shop, they happily selected many items. Today, the main exhibition area of the Atomic Bomb Museum was so crowded that people were packed shoulder to shoulder across the width of the passage, and we could not see it. We tried again after some time, but the situation made it impossible to get in. Also, the inside of the building was hot and humid, so the guests said they wanted to leave early. After consulting with the guests, we viewed a different section and then left, and I gave an explanation of the main exhibition in the free area of the building. The guests had read a book about the atomic bomb written by John Hersey just before coming to Hiroshima, so I proceeded while discussing its content and answering their questions. When the explanation was finished, it was 15 minutes before the scheduled end of the tour. The guests wished to return to the starting point after the tour, so when I was about to guide them to the bus stop, we decided to take a taxi and returned to Hiroshima Station by taxi. Since I had explained the newly renovated Hiroshima Station early in the tour, they mentioned they might try going to the movie theater after the tour.

    Dear guests,
Hello! My name is Miki. I was born and brought up in Hiroshima. I enjoy traveling around Inland Sea areas and I enjoy chatting with guests from overseas!

In Hiroshima, you can see many beautiful rivers and old bridges. Lately, I often take photos of Hiroshima city including bridges and rivers. There are not many tall buildings here, but I know some places you can visit and see the view for free. By the atomic bomb dome, there is a building called Orizuru(paper crane) Tower. You need to pay to go up to the top floor but you can see the view of Hiroshima city and the Miyajima Island(Itsukushima).

Many tourists from overseas as well as Japan want to visit Miyajima Island. You can see a beautiful shrine from Heian Period which is around 12th century and a huge Torii gate in front of the shrine and it is in the water. There are several ways to visit the island from Hiroshima city. If you are going to stay near JR Hiroshima Station, we will visit the island by JR train and JR ferry. If you are staying in the city area, we can go there by streetcar and ferry, or there is a high-speed boat from Peace Memorial Park pier directly to the island and vise versa.

Hoping to see you in the near future!

    Miki
