What Is a 6-Hour Early-Morning Private Kyoto Tour Like? A Licensed Guide's Report

The guests were a group of four visiting from Europe. The tour ran for six straight hours starting early in the morning at 7:00 AM, with no lunch break. Because it was an early departure and a no-lunch tour, the schedule was very efficient. The cherry blossom season had already passed, but the weather was clear and ideal for walking. Since it was an early-morning start, some of the guests seemed a little tired toward the end of the tour. I took them to Fushimi Inari, Arashiyama (Tenryu-ji Temple [the Dharma Hall, the Sogenchi Garden, and the Hyakka-en Garden], the bamboo grove, and the Kimono Forest), Ryoan-ji Temple, and Kinkaku-ji Temple. The guests said that Ryoan-ji was their favorite. Some of the guests had been interested in the rock garden of Ryoan-ji for a long time and listened very attentively to the explanation. I believe that through visiting the rock garden of Ryoan-ji, they gained some understanding of the essence of Zen and of wabi-sabi, which lies at the heart of Japanese culture. It may have been a little boring for some of the guests, but one of them said that the bamboo grove was their favorite.
