What Happens When a Tokyo Private Tour Is Cancelled at the Last Minute? A Licensed Guide's Report Having woken up at 3:30, receiving the cancellation notice just 19 minutes before the tour start time was tough. I provided information and left the Hotel at 5:15. For the exchange with the guests via messaging app, please refer to the "guest images during the tour" below.

Hello! My name is Hideki Maruyama. I was born in Osaka and raised in the Greater Tokyo area. I obtained my National Government Licensed Guide Interpreter Certificate in February 2016.
I spent 23 years working at a leading Japanese automotive company, including 7 years posted overseas. I then worked for a German premium automotive manufacturer for 13 years, followed by 6 years as an advisor to a British energy company. Through these roles at global corporations, I developed and refined key skills such as:
    1. Cross-cultural communication
    2. A deep understanding of business elites and affluent customers
    3. The ability to deliver impactful and impressive presentations in English
In addition to my regular duties, I often served as an interpreter for top executives during meetings with foreign government officials. I also had opportunities to introduce aspects of Japan—such as our national character and consumer preferences—to leadership teams in both the German and British companies.
As a tour guide, I’ve had the pleasure of guiding guests from a wide range of countries especially after the pandemic, including the US, UK, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, the Netherlands, Belgium, Switzerland, Austria, Norway, Romania, Slovenia, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, India, Hong Kong, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Brazil, Argentina, Columbia, Thailand, Malaysia, the Philippines, Laos, Turkey, Jordan, Kenya and Israel.
When guiding, I always keep in mind to go beyond what guests can find on social media or ChatGPT. I believe my professional background allows me to offer unique insights, and I am encouraged when guests mention this in their reviews

What's a Private Hakone Day Tour Like on a Foggy Day? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were visitors from Asia, and I had prepared a celebratory board for them. Visiting Japan had been their dream, and they were deeply impressed by how clean and how kind everything was in Japan. They also had a great interest in Japanese culture, and conversation started right away even while on the train, where another fellow traveler who happened to sit next to us joined in, and we all had an enjoyable time together. Unfortunately the weather was poor, and today not only Mount Fuji but even the ropeway was hidden in fog. Since they do not eat meat, we made up for it a bit with the black eggs, which were fine for them. The fresh greenery around the pirate ship on Lake Ashi was magnificent, and the guests said it reminded them of the scenery back home. For lunch we went to an Italian restaurant, where I shared some stories about kanji characters, and everyone enjoyed themselves.

Shimizu Shore Excursion: Mt. Fuji View Tour

    Tour Itinerary

    • 12:30 Pick-up at Shimizu Port → Chartered taxi → 13:50 Shiraito Falls → 15:00 Mount Fuji World Heritage Center → 15:50 Fujinomiya Sengen Shrine → 16:30 Japanese tea tasting at Tokiwaen Tea Shop → 18:00 Farewell at Shimizu Port

What Does a Private Day Tour of Mount Fuji from Shimizu Port Look Like? A Licensed Guide's Report The day was cloudy, but Mount Fuji showed its clear form even from Shimizu Port, raising expectations for the tour ahead. At the first stop, Shiraito Falls, the guests exclaimed in admiration at the delicate beauty rarely seen among waterfalls around the world. At the next stop, the Mount Fuji World Heritage Centre, they eagerly pressed their shutters at the rare sight of a lenticular cloud forming directly above Mount Fuji. After Fujinomiya Sengen Shrine, the guests enjoyed a tasting of matcha and green tea at a tea shop in Fujinomiya City, and were delighted by the warm hospitality of the staff. It was a short but fulfilling day.

My name is Kazunori Honma, I live in Odawara city near Hakone facing Pacific Ocean, so I am familiar with Mt. Fuji and Hakone area. In particular, nature, history, culture and food in the region are my specialty. I know a lot of Shinto shrines, temples, and hiking trails. Plus, I love art, so I am able to guide you to a wide variety of art museums in Mt. Fuji and Hakone area. If you are an art lover, you will be able to spend a fulfilling time with me.
I thoroughly make preparations for your interests and needs to satisfy you with all my effort in advance. I’m sure you will definitely be happy with spending a day with me.

What Can You See on a Private Nikko Day Tour? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were a group visiting Nikko. Since the group would be driving their own eight-seater private car, this became a tour where I paid extra attention to the driving arrangements. The group's requests were to visit Toshogu Shrine, Rinnoji Temple, and the Tamozawa Imperial Villa, plus one more location, so I guided them to a local history museum. Since I felt they were not fully accustomed to driving in the area, I selected the Tamozawa Imperial Villa, which is reached by going straight along the national road from the World Heritage area. I chose this because I believed it would minimize the risk of an accident for the guests. As each destination has its own distinct appeal, I believe the guests enjoyed the day with curiosity from start to finish without ever getting bored. They seemed particularly interested in and satisfied by the beauty of Toshogu Shrine and the architecture of the Tamozawa Imperial Villa. As they appeared to enjoy exploring throughout this tour, I believe it became an unforgettable day for the guests.

I am a licensed guide based in the Nikko area of Tochigi Prefecture, with a passion for sharing the depth and beauty of this remarkable region.
In particular, I take great pride in introducing the magnificent World Heritage area, home to Toshogu Shrine, Futarasan Shrine, Rinnoji Temple, and the iconic Shinkyo Bridge. The rich history, spiritual atmosphere, and masterful craftsmanship found there are truly inspiring.
But Nikko has much more to offer beyond the World Heritage zone. The region is uniquely spread across three different elevation zones: the central town area, the Lake Chuzenji area at higher altitude, and the remote Yumoto Onsen area in the mountains. Each of these areas offers a different charm—from historic sites and sacred spaces to scenic lakes, waterfalls, and hot springs.
However, due to the area’s wide geography, limited public transit options, and seasonal congestion, even navigating efficiently within a single area can be challenging without local knowledge.
That’s why local expertise is essential. With in-depth knowledge of Nikko’s layout, transportation network, and crowd patterns, I help my guests make the most of their time, while focusing on the area that suits their interests best.
I don’t just recite what’s written in guidebooks—I offer deeper insights rooted in Japanese history, religion, and culture. From the legacy of Tokugawa Ieyasu to the spiritual symbolism behind shrine architecture, I aim to provide meaningful and memorable experiences.
If you’re looking to discover the real Nikko, from its iconic landmarks to hidden gems, I’d be honored to guide you.

Title: What Is a Private Day Tour of Hakone Like? A Licensed Guide's Report on Owakudani, the Open-Air Museum, and Lake Ashi The guests were visitors from North America, and it was their first visit to Japan. They were on a 14-day trip to Japan. After spending time in Tokyo, they traveled to Hakone the previous evening. After one more night, they planned to travel from Odawara to Kyoto, Osaka, Nara, and Hiroshima, then return to Tokyo before flying home. During this trip to Japan, they mentioned they were planning to propose marriage. They said they really wanted to see Mount Fuji from Hakone. Originally the group was to be larger, but as some members could not join, the trip became a smaller group. Although it was cloudy, we were able to enjoy a beautiful view of Mount Fuji. First, we took the ropeway to Owakudani. I explained "The Formation of Hakone" and "An Overview and History of Owakudani." There were questions such as "Is Owakudani an active volcano? Has it ever erupted?" and "Is Mount Fuji also an active volcano? When did it erupt?" We bought and tasted the "black eggs." They remarked that "the smell of sulfur is very strong." We continued by ropeway via Sounzan and Gora to the Hakone Open-Air Museum. I explained "The Establishment and Current State of the Open-Air Museum." As one of the guests was a fan of Picasso, they viewed the exhibits in the Picasso Pavilion with great enthusiasm. We took our time walking around the grounds, and at the shop they bought postcards as a souvenir. They said, "It is a very calm and beautiful garden." We then went to Moto-Hakone and walked to Hakone Shrine. I explained "The History of Hakone Shrine." We visited the main hall, and I explained how to worship. Unfortunately, the torii gate on the lake was under maintenance work involving tree cutting, so we could not approach it. Returning to Moto-Hakone Port, we had a light lunch at a bakery and took a break. We boarded the Hakone Pirate Ship. I explained the history and current state of Lake Ashi. They said, "It is a beautiful lake and very refreshing." They also commented, "Everywhere in Japan the towns are clean. There is no litter on the ground," "Everyone is polite," and "Hakone suits us even better than Tokyo." We parted ways at Togendai Port.

    Guiding career:
Guide work started in July 2022. A guide focused on FIT compliance.
    FY2022 results: 17 cases, FY2023 results: 97
Destinations: Various places in Tokyo, Hakone, Kamakura and Nikko
As a recent group travel record, in October 2023, we have a track record of guiding a group of 33 people from Singapore to Narita Airport transfer plus sightseeing in Tokyo.
    Self-introduction:
In the past, I was stationed in Canada, the United States, and Mexico as an expatriate of a Japanese bank for over 11 years.
Since I have been mainly involved in the financing business in the United States for a long time, I think I am able to provide interpretation and translation services related to business and finance.
I am a certified CPA in the United States.
In addition, for three years from April 2016, I will be engaged in Japanese-English translation work (part-time), and I can also handle translation work.
Although I don’t have a qualification in Spanish, but I think I can handle day to day conversation in Spanish without any problems.
My hobby is trekking and from time to time, take a walk around mountains near Tokyo like Mt. Takao, Tanzawa, etc. I think it is possible to provide tourist information here as well.
Since April 2015, I have been working as a Tokyo Metropolitan Tourism Volunteer and Tokyo Metropolitan Disaster Prevention Volunteer.
One more, I have a separate house near Asuka Village, Nara prefecture, and I stay there for a total of about 30 days every year and have been enjoying sightseeing personally in the vicinity. Therefore, I think in the Kansai region, especially in Nara, Asuka, Yoshino, Koyasan, Kumano Kodo, etc., where I think I will be able to tour guide with confidence.

What Is a Private Hiroshima and Miyajima Tour Like on a Rainy Day? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were a group visiting from Oceania. The trip to Japan came about at the strong request of some of the guests, and they came to Hiroshima because they felt the whole group should learn about the history of Hiroshima. Since it was raining heavily that day, I spontaneously suggested going up Orizuru Tower, partly to take shelter from the rain, and once we got to the top, the guests were moved, saying, "This is a breathtaking view, it's amazing." Some of the guests loved going down by the slide and tried it many times. On Miyajima, perhaps because of the rain and the low tide, the ground was muddy, and there was a bit of trouble as feet got caught and shoes got wet, but we dealt with it using a towel we had brought. I ended the tour with the hope that the next generation would become messengers of peace. In their thank-you email afterward, they wrote that everyone was very satisfied, which was a great relief.

Title: What's a Private One-Day Tokyo Tour Like for First-Time Visitors? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were part of a group visiting Japan for the first time, arriving from North America the previous day. After spending time in Tokyo, they planned to travel to Hakone, Kanazawa, Matsumoto, Nara, Kyoto, Osaka, and Asuka, before returning to Tokyo for a few more nights and then heading home. Based on our email exchanges beforehand, we finalized today's itinerary together. One of the guests had prepared thoroughly for this trip, opening a thick guidebook each time we confirmed the next destination and carefully checking the details. Because of this, I took great care not to share any information that differed from what was written in the guidebook. Another guest, who was quiet at first, gradually opened up as they responded to my rapid-fire quizzes about Japanese culture and my playful puns. By the time we reached the sushi restaurant, this guest was chatting with the sushi chef using freshly learned Japanese words, even exchanging high-fives. It was memorable to see this guest reach over to try some of the chu-toro that had been ordered, and then, while checking a Japanese phrasebook from the thick guidebook, exclaim "Oishii!" with a big smile.

  • Kochi: Ryuga Cave & Kochi Shinko Port

Kochi: Ryuga Cave & Kochi Shinko Port

    Tour Itinerary

    • 9:40 Meet at Kochi Shinko Port
    • 10:20 Ryuga Cave
    • 12:30 Hirome Market
    • 13:30 Kochi Castle
    • 15:10 Katsurahama Beach
    • 15:50 Kochi Shinko Port

What Is a Private Day Tour of Kochi Like? A Licensed Guide's Report on Ryugado Cave, Hirome Market, and Kochi Castle Because the meeting time was slightly delayed, the return also ended up being close to 4:00 PM. Ryugado Cave overlapped with a bus tour, so the inside of the cave was quite crowded and took some time. The guests enjoyed themselves at a leisurely pace, taking photos along the way. We arrived at Hirome Market during peak crowded hours as well, so it took time both to place orders and for the food to arrive. Since some of the guests had a dietary preference, I chose Hirome Market for its wide range of options, though it was still quite a challenge. The shop for inaka-zushi (mainly wild vegetables) was also closed, so I recommended a vegetable and bean Indian curry. I also introduced them to seared bonito (katsuo no tataki) and gyoza, which they enjoyed with beer. I treated them to some konatsu citrus, and they said it was delicious and that they wanted to take some home since it isn't available where they live, enjoying it very much. The guests were all strong walkers, and they made the effort to climb the stairs at both Kochi Castle and Katsurahama. They commented that they had gotten a good workout and were satisfied.

What Is a Private Day Tour of Kumano and Nachi Like? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were a group who had been planning this trip well in advance. Light rain was falling at the departure. At Dorokyo Gorge, the group enjoyed the beautiful scenery, and some of the guests crossed the suspension bridge and took photos. We then moved to Hongu, where I spoke about the history of Hongu Taisha Shrine and its cypress-bark roof before we paid our respects. We took a group photo at Oyunohara before the rain came, and had lunch at a sushi restaurant. Everyone seemed to enjoy Japanese cuisine and was very pleased. After that, we traveled by taxi to Nachi. We took photos at Daimonzaka and climbed the slope, meeting up with the taxi again there. At Seigantoji Temple, some of the guests received goshuin (temple seal stamps). At Nachi Taisha Shrine, some of the guests went through the tainai-kuguri passage. By this point, it was raining quite heavily. Everyone bought various amulets. We moved on to the three-story pagoda, took more photos there, and then headed to the waterfall. Because of the rain, the water volume was high and the view was powerful, so everyone took many photos. Here too they received goshuin and each bought amulets. Just before 16:00, we boarded the vehicle at the parking lot in front of the waterfall and headed to the Hotel. We were about 20 to 30 minutes behind schedule, but we completed the full itinerary and the guests were very pleased. We exchanged farewells and the tour came to an end.

Title: What's a Private Osaka Food-Walking Tour Like? A Licensed Guide's Report on Dotonbori and Shinsekai The guests were visiting Japan from North America. Some had been to Japan for business several times before, while it was the first visit for others. There had been no advance information about the places they wished to visit, but when I checked with them on the day, they said they simply wanted to spend the time walking around and eating, so we decided to explore mainly the Dotonbori and Shinsekai areas. From the time we met at the Hotel there was a scent of alcohol, so I imagined they might be quite fond of drinking, but they never became overly intoxicated and enjoyed themselves in good spirits. After leaving the second kushikatsu restaurant, there was a request to go to a bar, but few places were open during the daytime, so in the end we decided to visit Shitennoji Temple, and I believe they enjoyed the sightseeing as well.
