    Title: What's a Private Family Day Tour in Tokyo Like? Asakusa, a Sumida River Cruise, and Tokyo Skytree — A Licensed Guide's Report This was my third set of guests this month from Oceania, and like the previous two, the group stayed at a hotel near Shiomi. The group purchased Suica cards at Shiomi Station before we set out. We first went to the JR Café at Tokyo Station, where the group activated their Japan Rail Pass and completed their Shinkansen ticket reservations. During the tour the guests wished to visit Tokyo Skytree, but it turned out that the online ticket the group had booked was only valid for entry at 15:00 and the time could not be changed, so I guided them to Sensoji Temple first. Since I knew from an earlier email that the group was interested in a Sumida River cruise, after exploring Sensoji I suggested taking a cruise down the river. Many cruises departing from Asakusa head toward the Hinode terminal, but on this day we were able to board a boat bound for Toyosu, which saved us the distance of traveling back to Tokyo Skytree afterward. After arriving at Toyosu, we took the subway with a transfer back to Oshiage, where I guided the group to the restaurant floor of Tokyo Solamachi before we parted ways. The Sumida River cruise ticket cost was covered by the guests.

    Title: What Can You See on a Private One-Day Tokyo Tour? A Licensed Guide's Report I guided the group visiting from Europe. After I proposed an itinerary through pre-tour contact, communication paused for a while, but we managed to reconnect just before the tour, and they requested "somewhere other than Shibuya." At the meeting point on the day, it turned out that some of the party who had been expected to join would not be participating, so the tour proceeded with the guests (plus the guide). I re-presented the itinerary, the guests agreed, and the tour began. They had already been in Japan for a week, having explored the Kurobe Dam and Shirakawa-go in Toyama, Hakone, and Kamakura (five temples and shrines!). In Tokyo, they had also booked a samurai restaurant show in Shinjuku and a sumo stable visit tour. I shared recommendations for restaurants and shops in Tsukiji and Ginza via a messaging app. Meanwhile, I smoothly guided them through Meiji Shrine, Roppongi, Tokyo Tower (exterior only), and the East Gardens, arriving in Asakusa at 13:30. As the temperature and humidity rose, the guests were getting a bit tired. After showing them the temple grounds via a shortcut, they said they wanted to take an air-conditioned break somewhere, so I guided them to a Japanese-style café on the grounds, and we parted ways with smiles.

    What's a Private Off-the-Beaten-Path Tokyo Walking Tour Like? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were a group visiting from Oceania. Since all the destinations were within a short distance of one another, moving between them was quite easy. Among the planned destinations, Kiyosumi Garden was the farthest, so I guided them there first. This compact garden, which allows you to see all the way to the back, was well received by the guests. Although I had personally visited Kiyosumi Garden several times, this was my first time guiding there. There were some things that are difficult to explain, such as the Koshinto stone monuments, and I reflected that I should have prepared a bit more in advance. Since there was a line at the onigiri cafe in Sendagi that I sometimes use, I took the guests to a Japanese restaurant in Ueno for lunch. This place also gets crowded on weekends, but because the restaurant itself is large, we were able to be seated without much of a wait. Originally I had intended to take the guests to the Nishi-Sando area of Asakusa at the end, but I changed the itinerary because Ueno was closer to the "Off the Beaten Path" theme. Ueno Park has several small spots, which I find convenient for adjusting the timing. Since the guests' hotel was also in Ueno, we were able to end the tour at just the right time and in just the right place.

    Title: What's a Full-Day Private Tour of Tokyo Like? A Licensed Guide's Report on the Imperial Palace, Asakusa, and Shibuya The guests were visitors from North America. As soon as they arrived at Tokyo Station, they asked me, "We're going to Kyoto on Wednesday, where can we buy Shinkansen tickets, and is there somewhere we can store our luggage?" So while walking toward the Marunouchi North Gate, I pointed out a ticket office along the way and showed them a luggage storage facility near the North Gate. However, after returning home and looking into it more carefully, I found that facility does not allow overnight storage, so I followed up with the guests to inform them of the storage facility inside the Marunouchi Central Gate (I'm glad I caught it, though I apologize for the confusion). On the day of the tour, there were road restrictions due to the men's marathon of the World Athletics Championships, so I was a little worried about whether we would have to wait on the road in front of the Imperial Palace or take a detour via Nijubashi, but fortunately the restrictions had already been lifted by the time we arrived at the Imperial Palace. Since the Imperial Palace grounds are vast, I checked with the guests about how they wanted to proceed, and since they were fine with walking, we decided to go all the way to the far areas. As one of the guests loved gardens, they took many photos at the East Gardens. Another of the guests was fond of art museums and showed less interest in ruins and history. At the Wadakuramon Gate, I always ask guests what the giboshi (ornamental caps) look like to them, and today, unusually, I received the answer "chess pieces," so I plan to make use of that in the future. Although there was no direct sunlight, the humidity was extremely high, and I sensed that they were gradually running low on energy, so on the way back we walked through the underground passage from the basement of the Palace Hotel all the way to catch the Tozai Line. Along the way there was a question, "What is that vending machine for?" and since I wasn't sure, I confirmed with someone who was making a purchase before answering. For future reference, I would like to experience the Tokyo Metro escape game myself to see whether it's enjoyable. In Asakusa, rather than Sensoji Temple itself, they enjoyed Nakamise and the West Approach. On Hoppy Street, for some reason the topic turned to the 2000-yen bill, and I was told, "I got this when I exchanged money in North America. Apparently it's rare in Japan, so here, take it." Since it was money, I declined, but they insisted I take it, and thinking it would be rude to refuse too firmly, I accepted it (it's a bit odd to receive it mid-tour, even as a tip). We had grilled meat skewers on the West Approach (they said it was delicious, though the salt was a bit too strong), and since they were still hungry, after seeing the Asahi Beer monument, we went into Ichiran ramen. Although we had to wait quite a while, since they make it to your own preferences, they said it was the best and finished every bit. One of the guests dozed off on the Ginza Line and seemed quite tired, but upon arriving in Shibuya they regained their energy and said with a smile, "Tomorrow we're going to see the tuna auction at Toyosu, so we're leaving at 4:30 in the morning" and "We can't wait."

    What Is a Private Walking Tour of Nezu, Rikugien Garden, and Asakusa in Tokyo Like? A Licensed Guide's Report I guided a lively group visiting from Oceania. Although it was September, the humidity was very high and the weather was quite uncomfortable, but they managed to get through the day without any trouble. Since they did not have any water with them, we first bought some at a vending machine near the statue of Kusunoki Masashige. They were very experienced travelers, friendly and kind, and we had an enjoyable time throughout. They particularly liked the quiet, atmospheric back streets of Nezu and Nezu Shrine. At Rikugien Garden, an Edo-style street performance happened to be taking place, and they gave a tip to the performer. They said the Japanese garden was as wonderful as they had expected. In Asakusa they bought thin towels with a sumo pattern and some rice crackers, and said it was a place they would like to return to. The tour was scheduled to end in Asakusa, but one of the guests said they wanted to have ramen before heading back and kindly invited me to join, so I accompanied them. As they seemed a little uneasy about the way back, I also accompanied them to the transfer at Akasaka-mitsuke, which ended up extending the tour by about an hour, but they were very grateful, so I finished the tour feeling reassured as well.

    Title: What Is a Private Hiroshima Day Tour Like? A Licensed Guide's Report on Peace Memorial Park, Hiroshima Castle, and Okonomiyaki The guests were visitors from North America. It was everyone's first time in Hiroshima, and the day before they had visited Miyajima, where they hiked Mount Misen all the way from the base to the summit. Since it was a three-day holiday weekend and the museum was expected to be crowded, we visited the Peace Memorial Museum first. There were many people, but it was not extremely crowded, and everyone viewed each exhibit very seriously and carefully. Afterward, we folded paper cranes together at the rest house and offered them at the Children's Peace Monument, and they told me it was a wonderful experience. At Hiroshima Castle, a wedding was being held at the Gokoku Shrine, and they were delighted to be able to see a traditional wedding ceremony. They also enjoyed okonomiyaki, and we had lively conversations about many topics, including popular foods and local dishes in North America, pets, and differences between homes in North America and Japan. We had planned to part ways at the lunch venue, but I learned that after the tour they were planning to attend Mass at the World Peace Memorial Cathedral, so I saw them there, which they greatly appreciated.

    Title: What Can You See on a Private One-Day Tour of Tokyo? A Licensed Guide's Report on Akihabara, Tsukiji, and Asakusa The guests were visitors from North America, on their first trip to Japan, having arrived the previous day. The previous evening they had gone food hopping in Shinjuku (they mentioned it was Okinawan cuisine). Today's itinerary had been arranged around one guest's requests, but the planned Omoide Yokocho had already been visited on the previous night's tour. Also, Akihabara appeared to have been listed without any deep intention, and the guests were not particularly interested in it. In place of Omoide Yokocho, we decided to have lunch in Akihabara, but since it was a Sunday afternoon, everywhere was crowded. The guests chose from the restaurant floor on the 8th floor of the electronics store in Akihabara, and enjoyed a fillet cutlet set meal. At Tsukiji, rather than seafood, they enjoyed matcha soft serve ice cream, and at Asakusa they enjoyed strawberry daifuku. Tonight, after a short break, they plan to go bar hopping in Golden Gai. Over the weekend they plan to visit Kyoto before returning home.

    I had worked in the international business scene for over 40 years and traveled to North America and European countries over 1000 days.
    After I retired from the business, I traveled to most of the major sightseeing spots in all 47 prefectures in Japan.

    My guide is starting from a brief history of the site where I am going to guide. I usually add a briefing about Japanese culture based on religions, such as Shinto Shrine and Buddhist temples. A geographic background behind the history is also important.
    My course includes 4 to 5 (in 6 hours) sites from the following depending on where I will pick the guests up;

    I am happy to introduce Japanese Manga/Anime cultures such as Akihabara, Nakano Broadway and Ghibli related sites.
    Travelling along the JR central line where guests can stopover at major animation studios (it is not accepted to visit the inside). The majority of animation studios such as TMS Entertainment, SUNRISE, A1 Pictures etc. are located in this area. Suginami Animation museum, Studio Ghibli and Ghibli Museum are also located.
    Guests can feel old houses in the Spirited Away scene in the Edo-Tokyo Open Air Architectural Museum.

    I can also provide a pilgrimage to the sacred place (shooting location) for the Shinkai Makoto animation movies such as Your name, Weathering with you, and Suzume.

    Another interesting feature is to visit authentic Japanese style pub meals such as Yakitori, Karaage, and Sushi etc.
    Asakusa Hoppy Street, Ameyoko Street, Yurakucho, Shimbashi, Shinjuku Golden gai, Shinjuku Omoide Yokocho are nice to visit.

    A Sake tasting at Sake Cellar can be an option.

    In addition to the above, I am available in the neighboring cities.

    Kawagoe is an old town developed in the 17th century. It has very close relationship with the Edo central government. Kawagoe castle ruins, Kitain temple and 500 Buddha statues will welcome the guests.
    These areas are renovated and provide an old days atmosphere.
    Japanese style sweets food stands will fascinate the guests.
    Kawagoe is about 1 – 1.5 train trip from Tokyo.

    Kamakura is the first Samurai worriers government established in the late 12th century.
    The Buddhism are introduced to Japan in the 6th century, and flourished at Nara and Kyoto later. A newer Buddhism sect such as Zen has well developed at Kamakura area.
    Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine, Gigantic Buddha statue at Kotokuin Temple and the flower temple Hasedera Temple are must-see.
    Kamakura is about 1 – 1.5 train trip from Tokyo.

    What Is a Private Nagoya Day Tour Like? A Licensed Guide's Report on Nagoya Castle and the Toyota Museum The day before the tour, the guests contacted me to say they wanted to start early and finish early because of the heat, so we moved the start time one hour earlier to 8:00. This turned out to be the right decision. The guests were very pleased with the tour of the Honmaru Palace at Nagoya Castle, and at the Toyota Commemorative Museum of Industry and Technology, some of the guests, who were fond of automobiles, took many photographs. One of the guests had strained their foot from walking a great deal with a guide during sightseeing in Tokyo two days earlier, and seemed to be in some discomfort on the day as well, but managed to complete the tour. Since the guiding time ran out during the visit to the Toyota Commemorative Museum of Industry and Technology, we parted ways there, and the guests returned by taxi.

    Title: What's a Private Cruise Port Day Tour to Nihondaira and Miho no Matsubara in Shizuoka Like? A Licensed Guide's Report Although the meeting time was set for 9:00, the guests disembarked from the cruise ship as early as 8:15, giving us a promising start. By connecting a shuttle bus, the Shizuoka Railway, and a local bus, we managed to enjoy the classic views of Mount Fuji from Nihondaira and Miho no Matsubara. Because of the rain the previous day, I had been worried about whether Mount Fuji would be visible, but it could be seen from both locations, and the guests were extremely pleased. Since our timing overlapped with tour groups arriving by bus, it took about an hour to board the Nihondaira Ropeway, which was quite challenging. Even so, it turned out to be a thoroughly satisfying day. As there are only a limited number of local buses, I carried out the tour with careful attention to itinerary management.

    Since I completely retired from my position at a railway company and started being involved in the tour guide interpreter business, I have experienced almost all types of guiding through FIT, Long Group Tours, Cruises (Shore Excursions), Incentive Tours, Special Interest Tours (Railway Travel, Pilgrimages), Familiarization Tours (Sales Promotion Tours) etc.
    However, I noticed that I am not fully satisfied to only be a general guide who just manages a tour itinerary provided by tour agents/clients.
    High-end guests have sometimes requested me to answer some enquiries that are actually challenging to answer for Japanese nationals. However, I appreciated those because they provided such a challenge and I felt that they wanted to understand my sense of beauty/values as a guide concerning a new culture for them.
    Every time I host my guest I do my best to prepare the most appropriate information based on three travel elements (appetite, logistics, accommodation). Nevertheless, I decided to aim for higher guiding skills after I was motivated by senior guides whose guiding strategies and gestures were particularly impressive.

    What Can You See on a Private Day Tour from Shizuoka to Miho no Matsubara and Mount Fuji? A Licensed Guide's Report There was no contact right up until just before the scheduled meeting time, so I felt very anxious and waited early at the agreed spot, but it turned out all the information from my side had reached them, and we were able to meet without any trouble. The guests were two cheerful friends visiting from North America. First, they wanted to see Mount Fuji, so we headed to Miho no Matsubara. Fortunately, we were able to see the full view of Mount Fuji along the way, which made the trip well worth it. We looked up at Mount Fuji from the rooftop of Mihoshirube, and inside received many origami Mount Fuji figures. At the souvenir shop, the guests curiously tried wasabi-flavored ice cream, shaved ice, and Abekawa mochi. I explained the Hagoromo no Matsu pine, the Hélène monument, and Haguruma Shrine, then we went out to the shore to enjoy Mount Fuji again, before heading to a 100-yen shop near the port and the "Suehiro" memorial hall of Shimizu no Jirocho across from it. The guests bought many high-quality chopsticks and folding fans that were reasonably priced, and enjoyed the uniquely Japanese architecture. After that, we went to Yume Terrace, where we were lucky to see Mount Fuji here as well. Finally, at the Kashi no Ichi market, we ordered a gorgeous assortment of seafood and sakura shrimp kakiage tempura, which we enjoyed. We also toured the fish market and said our goodbyes at the port.
