    What Does a Private One-Day Tokyo Tour Cover? A Licensed Guide's Report Today's guests were a group visiting Japan from Oceania. We first visited the Imperial Palace. The weather was cloudy and the temperature was not high, making for very pleasant conditions that the guests enjoyed. When I explained the shachihoko ornaments, the guests were amused and remarked how superstitious people must have been. Next we moved to Asakusa, where the guests were surprised by the lively atmosphere of Nakamise. We had lunch at a conveyor-belt sushi restaurant, and the guests were amazed by the high quality of the sushi and impressed by how affordable it was. Next we moved to Kiyosumi-Shirakawa and visited Kiyosumi Garden and the Fukagawa Edo Museum, where the guests showed great interest in the difference between Edo-period sushi and today's sushi. After that we visited Meiji Shrine, and finally the guests experienced the Shibuya Crossing before we parted ways. I lost the receipt, so I will not be claiming the admission fee for Kiyosumi Garden (it was too old to be included among the 100 items in the history).

    Can You Do a Private Day Tour of Hiroshima and Miyajima? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were visitors from North America. They were people who clearly knew the joy of enjoying sports in the great outdoors, such as trail running, off-road biking, and swimming. I welcomed the group at their Hotel, and on the way to the Peace Memorial Park we were able to talk about Japanese traditional culture and wartime experiences, which was a time that allowed us to connect emotionally. After that, we visited the museum and then took the World Heritage Sea Route to Miyajima. On Miyajima, we had lunch, and afterward we visited the main shops along the Omotesando shopping street. Then, thanks to the low tide, we were able to walk out to the base of the Great Torii Gate. We visited Itsukushima Shrine and other sites, and once again headed back via the World Heritage Sea Route. Finally, the tour concluded at the Motoyasu-bashi Pier.

    My name is Hiroshi Tsuji, a licensed guide based in Hiroshima and Miyajima. My family has been connected to Miyajima for more than 300 years, and I am pleased to share the history, culture, and daily life of this unique island with visitors from around the world.     With a background in outdoor sports—including rock climbing, scuba diving, and long-distance triathlons—I have completed several Ironman races abroad.     In Hiroshima, I guide guests through the Peace Memorial Park, including the Atomic Bomb Dome, and share perspectives on the history of Hiroshima and modern Japan.
    In Miyajima, I introduce Itsukushima Shrine, Mount Misen, the island’s beautiful scenery, and its local cuisine. As someone whose family has been connected to Miyajima for generations, I also enjoy sharing local insights and experiences that offer a more personal connection to the island’s culture and way of life.

We first visited Toyosu Market. Since it was 10:00, the market was quiet, but the guests were satisfied that they could observe the area where the tuna auction takes place. They also toured the fruit and vegetable wholesale market and were impressed by the wonderful, state-of-the-art wholesale facilities. Next, we visited Senkyaku Banrai to have breakfast. The guests fully enjoyed the lively atmosphere of the outdoor facility, and since a samurai performance was being held, they had a great time.     What Does a Private Tokyo Day Tour Include? A Licensed Guide's Report Today's guests were visitors from North America. We first visited the Imperial Palace, where I explained the three guardhouses and the reconstructed castle keep. We then headed to the keep base, and the guests were amazed as they imagined the size of the castle keep from its scale. Next, we visited Meiji Shrine, where I explained the role of the torii gate. The guests were also impressed by the beauty of the sake barrels, and I explained that they are donated every year by breweries from all over Japan. We then moved to Shinjuku, where the guests got a close-up view of the Godzilla Head. After having lunch at Omoide Yokocho, the guests expressed a wish to visit Hamarikyu Gardens, so I took them there before we parted ways.

    Title: What Is a Private One-Day Tokyo Tour Like? A Licensed Guide's Report on Meiji Shrine, Asakusa, and Tempura Body: The guests were visiting Japan for the first time and had gathered from different places to explore Japan together. They came from various parts of North America and Europe. At the start of the tour, they were so excited and cheerful that it was clear how much they had been looking forward to their trip to Japan. The weather brought occasional light drizzle, but fortunately it never rained heavily, which was a relief. Our first stop was Meiji Shrine, where the guests were deeply moved by the lush green forest. They listened intently to the birdsong, curious about what kinds of birds they were hearing. They even tried a smartphone app that identifies birds from their calls, though it did not produce a result. The crow's call was clear, but there was another lovely birdsong they could not identify. Since it was the weekend, we came across a Shinto-style wedding and families with babies visiting for their first-shrine blessing. The guests watched with great interest and took many photographs. They had said a late lunch would be fine, but as we passed through Tokyo Station it was already past noon, so I asked, and they said they were getting hungry, so we decided to have a tempura lunch. One of the guests ordered only the chicken tempura and started the meal a little cautiously, but in the end everyone said it was delicious and were pleased that this restaurant had been a great choice. After lunch, at Senso-ji Temple, they tried drawing omikuji fortunes. Everyone drew "good luck" or better and was delighted. By the time we had strolled leisurely through Sumida Park, some fatigue was setting in, so we decided to return to the Hotel. Besides sightseeing in Tokyo, the guests plan to head toward Kyoto and enjoy hiking along the Nakasendo trail.

    What's a Private Day Tour of Tokyo Like from Yokohama for Cruise Passengers? A Licensed Guide's Report The night before the tour, the guests contacted me to say that during their cruise they had already seen many temples, shrines, and gardens in Kyoto and elsewhere, so this time they wanted to see Tokyo. I explained that if we were to travel beyond Yokohama and Kamakura, they would need to cover the guide's transportation costs from Yokohama to Tokyo and back, and since they readily agreed, we changed the plan to a Tokyo tour. Based on our earlier communication, the guests had expressed a wish to taste Japanese whisky, and I told them that Tokyo offered far better options for this than Yokohama. At the whisky venue we actually visited in Ginza, there were so many paid tasting sets to choose from that it was hard to decide, and the guests were very satisfied. In Shinjuku we caught a bit of rain, but after that we were mostly under cover, which was a great help. Note: Yokohama Port has three cruise ship terminals. Osanbashi Pier and Hammerhead (Shinko) are convenient, but Daikoku Pier is far away with limited bridge access, making it very inconvenient. Yokohama City's website even recommends taking a taxi when cruise ships arrive, since public buses become crowded, take a long time, and may not be able to accommodate everyone. Even so, taxis compete with numerous excursion buses at the bridges, making travel times hard to predict, and a taxi from either Yokohama Station or Tsurumi Station costs between 3,000 and 4,000 yen, so it is hard to justify paying out of pocket from the guide fee to go and meet guests there. On the return trip, the number of public buses becomes unreliable as well, and in the worst case a round trip by taxi could eat up half the guide fee. This time the guests had initially hoped to meet at Daikoku Terminal, but since starting the tour from there would have taken at least an hour round trip, we were able to agree that they would take the shuttle bus provided by the cruise ship to Sakuragicho instead, which worked out well. Still, thinking about future tours, this remains a very difficult issue.

    If you are interested in hidden gem, here are some examples;

    Kawasaki, located between Tokyo and Yokohama near Haneda Airport, is the second station of the fifty-three stations of the Tokaido, the 400 years old highway towards Kyoto from Edo (old name of Tokyo). You can do Hand-cut glass experiment, stopping at a bar for sake tasting, visiting Kawasaki-Daishi temple that receives 3 million worshippers in the new year period.

    Another spot is Echigo-Yuzawa in Niigata prefecture, 75 minutes from Tokyo by Shinkansen train. Echigo-Yuzawa is “Onsen” (hot springs) town. You can enjoy visiting Sake brewery, skiing in winter, veiwing Sakura (cherry blossom) in spring. Appreciation of contemporary art displays in open air and old carvings at temples, in neighboring towns will be also memorable experience.

    What Is a Private Himeji Castle Tour Like? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were visitors from North America, and the tour proceeded smoothly. At each spot they asked many quite in-depth questions, which showed their high level of interest in Japan. They seemed very pleased with the panoramic view of Himeji Castle from the rooftop of Egret Himeji. At Himeji Castle they also toured with great enthusiasm and took many photographs. At Kokoen Garden, one of the guests was interested in plants and viewed the garden attentively. However, it was a little regrettable that, with limited time, the visit became rushed and I was not able to show everything. I presented a handmade drawstring pouch made by my sister, and the guests were very grateful. One of the guests enjoyed a matcha soft serve ice cream and was satisfied.     I would like to warmly welcome you to Japan this time. I am from the city of Kobe, which is of course, well-known for very tasty Kobe Beef . You can taste
    real genuine Kobe Beef here. Kobe is also called “Home of Japanese Sake” with lots of Sake breweries, and I recommend you would visit those breweries
    if you have any interest in Japanese Sake as well as one aspect of Japanese cultures. Of course, you can have tastings of various kinds of Sake there.

    Whenever during the tour, I always try to make it safe, pleasant and comfortable for all of the guests, which is my first priority. I am very much confident
    that you can have a pleasant and unforgettable experience in Japan. Just tell me about your preference; what you would like to like to see, have, know
    and eat and so on. Particularly, I hold the license for cooking qualified by the government here and maybe, I can reply you for questions related to the
    foods here. In this respect, I strongly recommend you would try not only famous Japanese cuisine such as Sushi, Tempura or Suki-yaki but some
    Japanese traditional local foods, like Tako-yaki, Okonomi-yaki and Kushkatsu. They are sometimes called the soul foods of Japan. Here is the brief
    explanation for these three foods.

    1) Tako-yaki
    Tako-yaki is a snack filled with pieces of octopus in a batter of flour , egg and soup stock. You can call them octopus dumplings or balls. “Tako” means
    octopus and “yaki” means grilled or broiled.
    2) Okonomi-yaki
    This word Okonomi-yaki means “cook just as you like” and you can use whatever you like as toppings, such as beef, pork, shrimp, squid and octopus.
    Okonomi-yaki is round shape and just like pancakes or pizza in shape mainly made from egg, flour and water.
    3) Kushi-katsu
    Kushi-katsu is skewered cutlet or deep-fried foods on a stick. “Kushi” means skewer and “katsu” means cutlet. Various kinds of foods are used for
    ingredients such as beef, pork, chicken, shrimp, squid, octopus and lots of kinds of vegetables.

    Actually, the western Japan including Osaka, Kobe and Himeji is called as “Home of such local soul foods”. You should give it a try and I am sure
    that you like them very much.

    I sincerely hope that I can be your tour guide this time in Kobe, Osaka and Himeji. If my guests said to me after the tour, “I have had a very good

    What Is a Private One-Day Tokyo Tour Like for Overseas Guests? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were a group visiting from North America. They had arrived the previous night and were staying in Tokyo only for the day, planning to board a cruise ship the following day to travel around various parts of Japan and Asia. They still seemed to be suffering from jet lag and were having a hard time. Although the weather brought occasional drizzle, it was much more comfortable than the heat we had until last month. The guests mentioned that the island where they live has a population of about 2,500, so while they were surprised at how many people there are in Tokyo, they were impressed by its cleanliness. At Asakusa, since they were not hungry yet, we postponed the meal. However, while moving through Marunouchi toward the Imperial Palace, one of the guests became tired and found walking difficult, so we took a short break at a coffee shop. After that, we went as far as Meiji Shrine, but following the explanation in front of the first torii gate, walking to the shrine for a visit was not feasible. So I guided them to the Shibuya Scramble Crossing, which they had requested, and they then returned to their hotel.

    I had worked in the international business scene for over 40 years and traveled to North America and European countries over 1000 days.
    After I retired from the business, I traveled to most of the major sightseeing spots in all 47 prefectures in Japan.

    My guide is starting from a brief history of the site where I am going to guide. I usually add a briefing about Japanese culture based on religions, such as Shinto Shrine and Buddhist temples. A geographic background behind the history is also important.

    I am happy to introduce Japanese Manga/Anime cultures such as Akihabara, Nakano Broadway and Ghibli related sites.
    Travelling along the JR central line where guests can stopover at major animation studios (it is not accepted to visit the inside). The majority of animation studios such as TMS Entertainment, SUNRISE, A1 Pictures etc. are located in this area. Suginami Animation museum, Studio Ghibli and Ghibli Museum are also located.
    Guests can feel old houses in the Spirited Away scene in the Edo-Tokyo Open Air Architectural Museum.

    I can also provide a pilgrimage to the sacred place (shooting location) for the Shinkai Makoto animation movies such as Your name, Weathering with you, and Suzume.

    Another interesting feature is to visit authentic Japanese style pub meals such as Yakitori, Karaage, and Sushi etc.
    Asakusa Hoppy Street, Ameyoko Street, Yurakucho, Shimbashi, Shinjuku Golden gai, Shinjuku Omoide Yokocho are nice to visit.

    A Sake tasting at Sake Cellar can be an option.

    In addition to the above, I am available in the neighboring cities.

    Kawagoe is an old town developed in the 17th century. It has very close relationship with the Edo central government. Kawagoe castle ruins, Kitain temple and 500 Buddha statues will welcome the guests.
    These areas are renovated and provide an old days atmosphere.
    Japanese style sweets food stands will fascinate the guests.
    Kawagoe is about 1 – 1.5 train trip from Tokyo.

    Kamakura is the first Samurai worriers government established in the late 12th century.
    The Buddhism are introduced to Japan in the 6th century, and flourished at Nara and Kyoto later. A newer Buddhism sect such as Zen has well developed at Kamakura area.
    Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine, Gigantic Buddha statue at Kotokuin Temple and the flower temple Hasedera Temple are must-see.
    Kamakura is about 1 – 1.5 train trip from Tokyo.

    What Does a Full-Day Private Walking Tour of Tokyo Look Like? A Licensed Guide's Report After meeting the guests at the Hotel, we walked along Diamond Street and through Ameyoko to Ueno. From Ueno we headed to Asakusa, walked through Nakamise, and I explained how to perform the water purification ritual before we visited the main hall. Because there was a risk of rain, we went to the East Gardens of the Imperial Palace early. We caught a little rain there, and then moved on to Meiji Shrine. There were many trees here, so we hardly noticed the rain. As it was the weekend, we came across many children dressed up for Shichi-Go-San, as well as a wedding couple, which delighted everyone. They were also preparing for the start of a doll exhibition, so I explained about Hinamatsuri and warrior dolls. After visiting the main sanctuary, since there was interest in eating sushi at Tsukiji for lunch, I explained the Hachiko statue in Shibuya, we crossed the scramble crossing, and from there headed to Tsukiji. We were able to eat sushi just as hoped, and everyone was satisfied. As some fatigue was showing, partly due to the time difference, I saw the guests off at the Hibiya Line platform at Tsukiji and we parted ways. It was a very satisfying day.

    What Is a Private Walking Tour of Kamakura Like? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were a group of friends based in North America who had visited Japan many times before. Some of them had a good command of Japanese and were quite familiar with the country, so they were comfortable getting around. All of them loved photography and took a great many pictures, and I helped out with this as well. They visited temples and observed the customs there so sincerely and respectfully that I felt I had something to learn from them. They wanted to see traditional, old-fashioned scenery, but felt that Komachi-dori was a bit too flashy and touristy. We found a sign for a soba and tempura restaurant tucked away in a quiet spot, and when we went in it turned out to be a wonderful place where we enjoyed our meal. We headed toward the shrine, but since we had already gone more than four hours over the planned time, the guests suggested that we wrap things up, and so the tour ended. They said they would be fine on their own from there.
