    Title: What's a Full-Day Private Walking Tour of Tokyo Like? A Licensed Guide's Report The weather was clear and warm, and the tour proceeded smoothly. Since the guests were planning to run the Tokyo Marathon the following day, I guided them from the finish point in front of Tokyo Station to the East Gardens of the Imperial Palace. A few cherry trees were in bloom, and the guests took many photos of the cherry and plum blossoms. In Asakusa, I talked about Buddhism and the history of the wartime damage, and since the guests wished to try melon bread, we stopped at a shop and had a snack. At Meiji Shrine, I received many questions about the shrine and its history, but there were two wedding ceremonies taking place, which caused us to pause along the way. I had planned to guide them along Takeshita Street on the way back, but partway through they stopped at a fast-food restaurant to shop, said they could find their own way from there, and the tour ended at that point. A tip was received.

    Despite the rainy weather, the requested sightseeing spots were visited without any trouble, and I believe the guests were reasonably satisfied. Initially, the plan was to visit Nanzoin and Dazaifu Tenmangu, then Ohori Park, and if possible Tochoji Temple as well, but I explained that seeing both Nanzoin and Dazaifu Tenmangu in the available time would be difficult, so I guided them on an itinerary that excluded Dazaifu Tenmangu. For lunch, we had tendon at the underground dining area of JR Hakata Station. The portion size was just right, and the guests liked it very much, describing it as "Perfect." Ohori Park had many migratory birds, and since one of the guests enjoys photographing birds, they were very pleased.

    Title: What Can You See on a Private One-Day Tokyo Tour with a Licensed Guide? A Guide's Report We started by purchasing a 24-hour Tokyo Metro pass. Since the guests enjoyed fishing, they were very interested in the seafood at Tsukiji, which they had requested to visit. As the Imperial Palace East Gardens were closed, I guided them around the outer edge of the Imperial Palace from Tokyo Station and suggested they enter the gardens the following day. In Asakusa, I gave a thorough tour that included Asakusa Shrine. Based on their request for either sushi or ramen, I took them to a sushi restaurant. It was their first time sitting at a sushi counter, and they were delighted. At Meiji Shrine, we talked about the differences between Japanese forests and those in their home region. We went to the entrance of Takeshita Street, but since the guests were not fond of crowds, they chose not to enter, and I saw them off at their Hotel to end the tour. I received a tip.

Before arriving in Japan, they had spent about two months traveling through several countries in Asia and Oceania, and on the day of the tour they arrived in Osaka from Tokyo in the afternoon. One of the guests would occasionally wander off in search of inspiration, so I found myself looking for them from time to time, while the other took it in stride and used the time to search for an authentic traditional doll they had been unable to find in Tokyo — and finally succeeded in getting one. In the end, it became a tour that left each of the guests satisfied in their own way.

The guests had a Suica card, so boarding the trains went easily. In Shibuya, I explained the route from the Ginza Line back to the hotel for their return before we boarded the JR line. At Meiji Shrine, there were several groups of visitors attending wedding ceremonies and shrine visits for newborns, which the guests watched with great interest. At the East Gardens of the Imperial Palace, we waited quite a while at the entrance, but they were delighted to see the gardens and the early-blooming cherry blossoms. In Asakusa, as time was running short, we went around a bit more quickly, but the guests enjoyed drawing omikuji fortunes and other activities. We finished in front of the main hall, where I received a tip.

    Title: What Is a Private One-Day Tokyo Tour Like? A Licensed Guide's Report on Meiji Shrine, Tokyo Tower, and Akihabara The guests were visiting Japan for the first time from North America. At Meiji Shrine, the first stop of the day, they were delighted to encounter a wedding procession, as it was a Saturday morning, and enjoyed taking photographs. Thinking of a member of the family who could not join this trip, the guests carefully selected several omamori charms as souvenirs, and also purchased two large ofuda tablets for family safety and good fortune. Zojoji Temple was a place I suggested visiting since it is adjacent to Tokyo Tower, which the guests had requested, and they were very impressed by the Himalayan cedar associated with General Grant, the temple bell, and the view of the main hall together with Tokyo Tower. A ceremony was underway in the main hall, so we could not go inside, but we were able to enter the neighboring Ankokuden hall, where prayers were being offered for several families, and the guests listened intently to the monks' chanting for a while. Next we visited Tokyo Tower, which they mentioned could be seen from their hotel room, but they wished to go up, so we ascended to the 150m Main Deck. Unfortunately Mount Fuji was not visible, but we could see Rainbow Bridge and Tokyo Bay, and even spotted Tokyo Skytree in the distance, so they thoroughly enjoyed the scenery. At the Imperial Palace, we entered from Sakuradamon Gate, viewed the Main Gate and Nijubashi Bridge, and walked toward Tokyo Station. Along Gyoko-dori Avenue, the finish point of the Tokyo Marathon to be held the following day, tents were being set up. Someone the guests had sat next to on their flight to Japan was reportedly participating in this event, so they were quite conscious of the marathon. Then, for a late lunch, we enjoyed a tempura set meal at Hageten in Gransta Yaesu North at Tokyo Station, chosen as a place where we could be seated right away. The guests were very skilled with chopsticks and told me about the Japanese language and culture classes they usually attend, and the conversation about food grew lively, including a question about which rice brand I usually eat. Since a reservation had been made at an owl cafe in Akihabara for 4:00 p.m. and we had already enjoyed plenty of sightseeing, the guests wished to skip Asakusa and head to Akihabara, so we adjusted the original plan. First, I helped them purchase shinkansen tickets to Kyoto for a trip planned two days later at Tokyo Station, then we moved to Akihabara on the Yamanote Line and said goodbye in front of the owl cafe.

    Title: What's a Private Walking Tour of Tokyo Like Around the Marathon? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were visitors from North America. They had previously been to a base near Atsugi during a stay in Okinawa, and part of the group was visiting Japan for the first time. This visit was centered on participating in the Tokyo International Marathon, so there were no plans to visit places such as Kyoto. At Meiji Shrine we came across a bride at a wedding, and when I explained that the tsunokakushi headpiece carries a symbolic meaning of hiding the "horns of jealousy," one of the guests was surprised and laughed, saying, "I don't need that." They had a reservation for Shibuya Sky (the observation deck) the following day, but they also wished to see the area on this tour, so we experienced crossing the Shibuya Scramble Crossing and visited the Hachiko statue. I simply gave directions to the PARCO building housing Mega Don Quijote and the Pokémon Center, and we wrapped up Shibuya in a short time, then headed toward the Imperial Palace via Ginza. Around that time, one of the guests mentioned wanting to have lunch soon, so we decided to eat at Tokyo Station. Since one of the guests wanted to run the marathon in top condition, they were careful about their meals. At Gransta Yaenkita in Tokyo Station, they chose the tempura restaurant Hageten. At first one of the guests said they were not very hungry, but in the end they finished off even what the other guest could not eat. They said it was delicious and seemed to thoroughly enjoy it. Apparently you need to win a lottery to participate in the Tokyo Marathon, and they were delighted to have been fortunate enough to take part this time. They mentioned that after this event, which happened to coincide with a birthday, they planned to celebrate to the fullest, free from dietary restrictions and including drinks.

    Meeting point at Hotel The guests were a group visiting from North America, all visiting Japan for the first time. Some of the guests had arrived a couple of days earlier and had visited TeamLab Planets and Tsukiji Market, while the others had arrived the previous night. Because of their itinerary, they were not interested in shopping or street food, and took relatively few photos. Their reactions were somewhat muted at first, so I proceeded while wondering about the reason. When I asked, I learned that one of their relatives was going to run the Tokyo Marathon the next day, and they had come to Japan to cheer them on. The itinerary we had arranged in advance turned out to closely follow the marathon course. I then explained the actual route they would run and pointed out the relevant metro stations along the way. Along the actual course, the guests became quite interested and took many photos. There were many visitors wearing Tokyo Marathon-related shirts, and many people with runner's markings, so everywhere was extremely crowded. With more than 30,000 runners alone, plus their families and supporters, the number of visitors was tens of thousands higher than usual. The runner was staying in Shinjuku and planned to meet up with the group that evening at a sumo club in Asakusa.

    I had worked in the international business scene for over 40 years and traveled to North America and European countries over 1000 days.
    After I retired from the business, I traveled to most of the major sightseeing spots in all 47 prefectures in Japan.

    My guide is starting from a brief history of the site where I am going to guide. I usually add a briefing about Japanese culture based on religions, such as Shinto Shrine and Buddhist temples. A geographic background behind the history is also important.
    My course includes 4 to 5 (in 6 hours) sites from the following depending on where I will pick the guests up;
    – Senso ji Temple
    – Kappabashi Kitchenware Market
    – Tokyo Skytree
    – Ueno Park
    – Nezu Shrine
    – Imperial Palace outer park
    – Tokyo Central Station, Marunouchi historic district
    – Tsukiji Fish Market
    – Koishikawa Korakuen Garden
    – Ginza
    – Odaiba
    – Hama Rikyu Garden
    – Shinjuku Gyoen Garden
    – Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building
    – Roppongi
    – Meiji Shrine
    – Harajuku & Takeshita Street
    – Shibuya
    – and Any of your interest.

    I am happy to introduce Japanese Manga/Anime cultures such as Akihabara, Nakano Broadway and Ghibli related sites.
    Travelling along the JR central line where guests can stopover at major animation studios (it is not accepted to visit the inside). The majority of animation studios such as TMS Entertainment, SUNRISE, A1 Pictures etc. are located in this area. Suginami Animation museum, Studio Ghibli and Ghibli Museum are also located.
    Guests can feel old houses in the Spirited Away scene in the Edo-Tokyo Open Air Architectural Museum.

    I can also provide a pilgrimage to the sacred place (shooting location) for the Shinkai Makoto animation movies such as Your name, Weathering with you, and Suzume.

    Another interesting feature is to visit authentic Japanese style pub meals such as Yakitori, Karaage, and Sushi etc.
    Asakusa Hoppy Street, Ameyoko Street, Yurakucho, Shimbashi, Shinjuku Golden gai, Shinjuku Omoide Yokocho are nice to visit.

    A Sake tasting at Sake Cellar can be an option.

    In addition to the above, I am available in the neighboring cities.

    Kawagoe is an old town developed in the 17th century. It has very close relationship with the Edo central government. Kawagoe castle ruins, Kitain temple and 500 Buddha statues will welcome the guests.
    These areas are renovated and provide an old days atmosphere.
    Japanese style sweets food stands will fascinate the guests.
    Kawagoe is about 1 – 1.5 train trip from Tokyo.

    Kamakura is the first Samurai worriers government established in the late 12th century.
    The Buddhism are introduced to Japan in the 6th century, and flourished at Nara and Kyoto later. A newer Buddhism sect such as Zen has well developed at Kamakura area.
    Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine, Gigantic Buddha statue at Kotokuin Temple and the flower temple Hasedera Temple are must-see.
    Kamakura is about 1 – 1.5 train trip from Tokyo.

    What Is a Private Nagasaki Walking Tour Like? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were a group visiting from North America, and everyone seemed to enjoy the tour. At the Atomic Bomb Museum, they viewed the exhibits with great interest. At the Hypocenter Park, they attentively observed the hypocenter monument and the remains of Urakami Cathedral. At Peace Park, they listened with interest to the meaning of the Peace Statue. They also listened with interest to the history of Urakami Cathedral, which can be seen from Peace Park. At Suwa Shrine, they eagerly listened to the history of the shrine and the differences between Shinto and Buddhism. At Meganebashi (the Spectacles Bridge), they delightedly looked at the bridge reflected on the surface of the water. At Dejima, they listened attentively to the background of Dejima's construction and its trade with Portugal and the Netherlands. At Glover Garden, they listened with interest to the role Glover played in Japan's modernization. At the end of the tour, the guests told me it was the best tour they had ever taken.

    Title: What Is a Private Port Cruise Tour in Japan Like? A Licensed Guide's Report The arrival time of the cruise ship was delayed, and at the port the waiting times for both taxis and shuttle buses became long. In addition, because it was a Saturday on top of the cruise ship's arrival, it was difficult to catch a taxi during the tour as well, which led to longer waiting times and longer walking distances. There may have been a need for more consideration in the explanations and the itinerary. It was sometimes difficult to gauge the reactions of one of the guests, which made it hard to judge how far to proceed with the explanations.
