Title: What Can You See on a Rainy-Day Private Kyoto Tour? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were visitors from North America. The overseas travel agency was quite relaxed and there was no advance planning at all, so on the morning of the tour we discussed the destinations together at the Hotel. Since it was pouring rain from early in the morning, we took that into account, and because the guests were interested in the tea ceremony, dry landscape gardens, geisha and maiko culture, and the history of the shogun, the itinerary was decided quickly. The conversation was very enjoyable. According to the guests, much of their home region is a land of mountains and lakes with a lot of rain, and there people would call you uncool for walking around with an umbrella. So they were absolutely delighted that in Japan they could walk around holding an umbrella in the rain, saying that was the coolest and most enjoyable thing of all, cheerfully making the most of it. Even after the rain stopped in the afternoon, they always put up an umbrella when taking photos, thoroughly enjoying the heavy rain of the day. It was a delightful group to guide. There were no expenses advanced.

Hello, this is Kazu Akiyama, your tour guide. Nice to meet you and welcome to Japan. Thank you for joining me on the tour. Now I am a retired salaried worker, living in Osaka. I have been very much interested in not only learning Japanese history, culture, religion myself, but also talking about them (sometimes going off topics) in English with tourists from all over the world as well. I am so excited being with you as your guide on coming day! I am very much looking forward to you enjoying with me visiting the must-see places and some of the hidden gems. See you soon. Thank you – Kazu Akiyama

Title: What's a Private Day Tour of Himeji Castle, Koko-en, and Mount Shosha Like? A Licensed Guide's Report I guided a group visiting from North America. They requested three destinations: Himeji Castle, Koko-en Garden, and Mount Shosha. Since it would be a fairly tight schedule, I paid careful attention to the amount of time spent at Himeji Castle and Koko-en, as well as the connections between the bus and the ropeway. It was fortunate that we could use the microbus from the Mount Shosha summit station, as it saved us time. I had planned about an hour at Mount Shosha, but as some of the guests were feeling a bit tired and wished to return earlier, we only visited the Maniden Hall before descending, and the tour ended an hour ahead of schedule. They were very friendly, and they asked how the phrase changes when adding "gozaimasu" or not, and practiced the pronunciation of "kawaii" (cute) and "kowai" (scary) many times.

What Is a Rainy-Day Private Tokyo Tour Like? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests arrived from North America and planned to stay in Tokyo before continuing by cruise ship to Kyoto, Osaka, Hiroshima, Nagasaki, and Kagoshima. This tour took place under storm-like heavy rain that continued from the morning. At the start of the tour, I told the guests, "We may not be blessed with good weather, but thanks to the rain it is about 16 degrees Fahrenheit cooler than yesterday, which makes for a comfortable temperature (I always struggle with converting between the metric system and the imperial system for guests from North America). I'm sure there will be other good things too." Thanks to the heavy rain, we were able to enter a micro-pig cafe on Takeshita Street with no wait, even though it usually requires a reservation, and the guests enjoyed interacting with many micro pigs. For lunch, we were able to get into a sushi restaurant that is also popular in Tsukiji with no wait, and the guests savored their sushi slowly and calmly. It was truly a day of "After a storm comes a calm."

Title: What Is a Private Kyoto Tour Like on a Rainy Day? A Licensed Guide's Report Heavy rain fell from the morning. Due to the rain and the guests' schedule, the departure was moved to 10:30. The guests were a group visiting Kyoto, and because walking was a bit difficult, we chose to use escalators and elevators wherever possible (there is an elevator at the entrance to the Senbon Torii of Fushimi Inari Taisha). We also walked slowly along the gentle, accessible route. We had originally planned to visit Kinkaku-ji at the end, but the group seemed tired, so we took a taxi from Nijo Castle back to the Hotel and parted ways there.

Title: What Is a Private Tokyo Day Tour Like Before Heading to Okinawa? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were visitors from North America, coming to Japan for the first time. They planned to sightsee in Tokyo before a work-related event in Okinawa and to visit Kyoto afterward. When I checked on their condition the day before the tour, it turned out that the hotel they had booked online was not near Narita Airport as they had expected, but rather located near Haneda Airport. After arriving at Shinagawa from Narita by the N'EX, they seemed to have had considerable difficulty transferring to the Keikyu Line and reaching the hotel. However, having spent several days in Asia beforehand, they were not affected by jet lag, so we were able to begin the tour smoothly. The guests appeared to enjoy all of the places we visited. When we visited Asakusa, they asked detailed and repeated questions about the difference between "Buddhism" and "Shinto." At the Japanese restaurant where we had lunch, they highly praised Japanese cuisine as being healthy and wonderful. They mentioned that there are Japanese restaurants in North America as well, but they were amazed by the excellent taste and high quality of the lunch this time. Thanks to their high level of satisfaction, our conversation flowed easily, and we enjoyed discussing a wide range of topics, comparing Japan and North America on subjects such as political systems and social issues. The guests had experience hosting Japanese exchange students through a homestay program, and through that exchange they said they had learned the concept of "hara hachi bu" (eating until eighty percent full). Including that idea, they spoke about the healthy eating habits of Japanese people.

Title: What Is a Private Day Tour of Nikko Like? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were visitors from North America. They had arrived in Japan the day before and headed straight to Nikko to stay overnight there. They were a delightful group with wonderful smiles, and the atmosphere remained relaxed throughout the day. One of the guests was completely absorbed in taking photos and videos, so I gave much of the explanation to the other, who then shared what I had told them, sparking interest on both sides. Based on the priorities I had heard by email beforehand — 1. history, 2. culture, 3. architecture, 4. nature, 5. food — I focused on the two shrines and one temple and their surroundings. They listened so attentively that I tended to go into more detail than usual, so I checked with them along the way to make sure the amount of explanation was not tiring. They said they wanted to hear even more, which was wonderful. Today was Tochigi Prefecture Citizens' Day, and various events were held at prefectural facilities. In Nikko, a free concert called "Koto Melodies of Fresh Green" was held at the Tamozawa Imperial Villa, and we were able to enter the venue at just the right time. The guests unexpectedly heard the tones of the koto and shakuhachi, traditional Japanese instruments, and were captivated by the performance. Since they were interested in history and culture, it was a perfect fit. I believe they enjoyed the entire day very much.

    Tour Itinerary

    • 9:40 Meet at Hotel Hakone-en. From there, take the Izuhakone Bus and get off at Yunessun. Okada Museum of Art. Take the bus from Kowakien and get off at Hakone Sekisho. Maruyama Bussan Yosegi Zaiku (marquetry) tour and shopping. Move to Motohakone by bus. From here, put them in a taxi to return to the hotel, and disband before 2 o'clock.

Title: What Is a Rainy-Day Private Hakone Tour Like? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests initially arrived and expressed concern about sightseeing in heavy rain. I explained that we would avoid walking tours in the rain and focus mainly on the museum and Maruyama, and after obtaining their agreement, the group set out together. At the Okada Museum of Art, the guests were overwhelmed and deeply impressed by its extensive exhibits, and they thanked me, saying it had been an excellent choice. At Maruyama Bussan, the guests were delighted with the presentation. Please see the photos for how it went. Afterward, I had planned for lunch, but the heavy rain had caused severe flooding on the roads, making walking difficult. A local person advised that buses might stop running and that it would be better to return to the hotel before that happened, so I explained this to the guests, who fully agreed. We took a bus to Moto-Hakone, the closest point to the hotel, and I put them in a taxi to return to the hotel.

What Is a Private Kumano Kodo Day Tour Like from Kii-Tanabe? A Licensed Guide's Report The tour began under a heavy rain advisory, which made for an anxious start. During the downpour, the spray thrown up by oncoming trucks made it nearly impossible to see the road ahead, which was quite frightening for the guests and me alike, but thanks to the driver's safe handling, we were able to complete the entire itinerary. Since a round trip from Kii-Tanabe takes about four hours in total, only about four hours remained for the tour itself, but I wanted the guests to experience at least a part of the Kumano Kodo, so we walked the Daimon-zaka slope. The guests were delighted, saying they had never expected to be able to walk this route. On the way back, the driver took the coastal route, so we were also able to see the Hashigui-iwa rocks in Kushimoto. The guests were very pleased. I am truly glad we were able to complete the tour safely.

Hi! My name is YUKA. I’ve got the government license in 2018 and joined a half year traning to do the guide. But a half year later I started my carreer, Covid came. I should have given up guiding. During the Covid, I’ve read many books and made my own materials to explain Japanese culture, history, etc. I love guiding because the guests expand my horizon all the time and let me know their own country and culture, etc. It is really important for us all to know each other and respect each other to make this world peace. Thank you for coming to Japan! Let’s enjoy Japan together!

I later realized that the guests had sent an email asking to push the start time back after I had already left home. The forecast indicated the rain would gradually stop, so starting at 10:00 posed no problem, and we began at 10:00. (In cases like today, would it have been better to accommodate a sudden same-day change to the start time? In reality, I come from the direction of Wakayama City and make sure to arrive near the guests' hotel about 30 minutes early, so I would have had no choice but to wait around locally.) As we strolled through the covered Kuromon Market, the rain let up, and by the time we walked around Dotonbori and Amerikamura, we were able to explore without umbrellas. By email, the guests had mentioned they would visit Osaka Castle and Shitennoji Temple on their own and asked me to guide them around Kuromon Market and Dotonbori, but additional requests came up such as Amerikamura, Den Den Town, Tsutenkaku, and Tower Knives, so I centered the tour around Ebisucho and covered Den Den Town and the Tsutenkaku area, keeping in mind an easy route back to the guests' hotel. Some of the guests wanted to take their time shopping in Amerikamura, but another of the guests told them they could come back later to take their time, so we quickly covered the places we wanted to see. After that, I showed them the way to Den Den Town and we parted ways.

Hi! I’m an official English guide in Wakayama prefecture. I’m also a national guide as well. I’d like to expand my guide area to help tourists.
The town of Osaka offers a different atmosphere than Tokyo. I like both exciting Osaka and nature-filled Wakayama Prefecture.
If you stay in Osaka for 3 days, you can go to Koyasan for one day, or even for a day trip, so I recommend sightseeing at Koyasan.
If you are tired of the hustle and bustle of the big city, the nature of Koyasan will relax you.
I will introduce you to the unique culture, history and must-see sights.

Can You Do a Private Family Tour of Hiroshima and Miyajima? A Licensed Guide's Report [Japan Guide Agency (JGA Inc.)](https://www.j-g-a.org/) guide led a private tour for a group visiting Japan from North America. Some of the guests had a strong personal connection to Japan and were quite fond of the country. One of the guests had an interest in omikuji fortune slips, and having drawn an excellent fortune ("daikichi") at Miyajima the previous year, they had kept it carefully. This year they again drew the same excellent fortune, which brought great joy. Some of the guests looked very carefully at the exhibits, especially those explaining how radiation affects the human body.
