    What Is a Private Tokyo Tour Like? A Licensed Guide's Report on Fukagawa and Asakusa The guests were a group visiting Japan for the first time from North America. At Tomioka Hachimangu Shrine, they were amazed by the powerful presence of Japan's heaviest mikoshi (portable shrine) and the sheer size of the handprints and footprints of sumo wrestlers, saying it was "unbelievable." At Sensoji Temple, some of the guests spotted the "manji" symbol and were puzzled, initially associating it with an old symbol used by fascists, but they were reassured once I explained its original Buddhist meaning. Some of the guests drew "omikuji" fortunes, and remarkably, two of them received "dai-kichi" (great blessing). When I explained that the probability of drawing dai-kichi at Sensoji is lower than at other temples and shrines, they were delighted. They plan to continue on to the Kansai region and Hiroshima, and it seems they had a great start to their trip in Japan.

    Title: What's a Private Kyoto Day Tour Like? A Licensed Guide's Report on Arashiyama, Kinkaku-ji, and Sanjusangendo The guests were visitors from North America. Although the tour had been booked through a travel agency as an Arashiyama and Sagano tour, the guests seemed happy to explore without being tied to that itinerary. Perhaps because of the heavy rain from the previous night through the morning, there were fewer tourists than usual, and the guests thoroughly enjoyed strolling through the bamboo grove and taking photos in quiet, uncrowded spots. After discussing options, they said they wanted to visit Kinkaku-ji, so we took the Randen tram and a city bus to get there. This spot was also relatively uncrowded after the heavy rain, and I believe they enjoyed it. They mentioned they wanted to have ramen for lunch, so we went to a nearby restaurant, and they were very pleased. Since they had already visited Kiyomizu-dera, Fushimi Inari, and Gion on their own, I suggested Sanjusangendo, which caught their interest, so we transferred buses and headed there. The buses were empty, making for a comfortable journey. They were amazed by the 1,001 Buddhist statues and purchased a goshuin book to receive a temple stamp. I believe they were very satisfied.

    Title: What's a Private Kyoto Day Tour Like? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were visitors from Oceania, staying at a hotel in Osaka. They mentioned that they could not find a cafe open early in the morning in Osaka and were finally able to get coffee at Kyoto Station. Apparently, their day does not begin without coffee, so we started the tour while enjoying a cup of coffee. When I told them that Kyoto City has the highest coffee consumption in Japan, they were surprised. They were not fond of seafood and did not seem particularly interested in Japanese cuisine. However, they were very curious about the sake tasting at Nishiki Market and enjoyed it greatly. Since they said they really wanted to eat vegetables, I introduced them to a shop selling Kyoto vegetables near Nishiki Market. Near Kiyomizu-dera Temple, they also enjoyed a skewered cucumber. Of course, they enjoyed every place we visited.

    **Tour Details:** Title: What Can You See on a Private One-Day Tokyo Highlights and Culture Tour? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were a group visiting from North America. Their advance request was for "Tokyo highlights and a cultural experience." An itinerary had already been provided, but I confirmed it again at the hotel meeting. I learned that they were touring various parts of Japan over nearly two weeks by cruise ship. We first went to the Shibuya Crossing. They already knew about the Hachiko statue and took photos there. At Meiji Shrine, we entered from the north approach, and since they were not familiar with Japanese Shinto or Buddhism, I explained both. I also guided them through the inner garden, where they enjoyed the water lilies and irises in full bloom. As we had time to spare, I also showed them Takeshita Street in Harajuku. As the temperature rose, at the guests' request we cooled off for a while at an otter cafe. On Nakamise Street in Asakusa, I recommended ningyo-yaki. After praying at the main hall of Senso-ji, we went for a tea ceremony experience. There were many large groups today (two groups of around 20 to 30 people each), but thanks to all the staff, the guests were able to relax and enjoy themselves. One of the guests purchased a tea bowl. They had also heard about Japanese-made kitchen knives, so after the tea ceremony experience I guided them to a famous knife shop on Shin-Nakamise Street, where they purchased five knives (four intended as Christmas presents this year). Finally, I guided them to Azabudai Hills, home of teamLab Borderless, and we parted ways at the entrance. I had strained my back the day before the tour and had to walk slowly, for which I felt apologetic, but the guests were very understanding, and I am truly grateful.

    Title: What Is a Private One-Day Tokyo Tour Like for First-Time Visitors? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were a group visiting from Asia, arriving the previous night on their first trip to Japan. After Tokyo, they planned to travel to Nagoya, Kyoto, and Okinawa. Since guide service was only for the first day, I provided a Tokyo Travel Guide and explained the main sightseeing spots in Tokyo. They mentioned wanting to have breakfast at Tsukiji again the next day, and I explained that the route was easy since it is a single ride on the Hibiya Line. As the group was not used to going up and down stairs, and to accommodate everyone's preferences, we used escalators and elevators as much as possible throughout the day. Around Ginza, someone wanted ice cream, so I explained that it could be enjoyed at a tea house in Korakuen. Upon arriving, only vanilla and matcha flavors were available, and since chocolate flavor was requested, we decided to have it in Asakusa instead. In Asakusa there was the soft serve they wanted, and the group also purchased some Japanese candy such as konpeito. Originally, the plan was to continue to Harajuku and then finish in Shibuya. In advance emails, I had asked whether the group was interested in anime or manga, but the reply was that they were not particularly interested, so I did not include it. However, on the subway, one of the guests asked whether there was a Nintendo store, and when I answered that there was one in Shibuya, the group was very eager to go there. When I further explained that there was also a Pokémon store, they lost interest in everything else. We skipped Harajuku and headed to Shibuya. Even the Scramble Crossing photos were postponed as we headed to PARCO, where we parted ways.

    I had worked in the international business scene for over 40 years and traveled to North America and European countries over 1000 days.
    After I retired from the business, I traveled to most of the major sightseeing spots in all 47 prefectures in Japan.

    My guide is starting from a brief history of the site where I am going to guide. I usually add a briefing about Japanese culture based on religions, such as Shinto Shrine and Buddhist temples. A geographic background behind the history is also important.

    I am happy to introduce Japanese Manga/Anime cultures such as Akihabara, Nakano Broadway and Ghibli related sites.
    Travelling along the JR central line where guests can stopover at major animation studios (it is not accepted to visit the inside). The majority of animation studios such as TMS Entertainment, SUNRISE, A1 Pictures etc. are located in this area. Suginami Animation museum, Studio Ghibli and Ghibli Museum are also located.
    Guests can feel old houses in the Spirited Away scene in the Edo-Tokyo Open Air Architectural Museum.

    I can also provide a pilgrimage to the sacred place (shooting location) for the Shinkai Makoto animation movies such as Your name, Weathering with you, and Suzume.

    Another interesting feature is to visit authentic Japanese style pub meals such as Yakitori, Karaage, and Sushi etc.
    Asakusa Hoppy Street, Ameyoko Street, Yurakucho, Shimbashi, Shinjuku Golden gai, Shinjuku Omoide Yokocho are nice to visit.

    A Sake tasting at Sake Cellar can be an option.

    In addition to the above, I am available in the neighboring cities.

    Kawagoe is an old town developed in the 17th century. It has very close relationship with the Edo central government. Kawagoe castle ruins, Kitain temple and 500 Buddha statues will welcome the guests.
    These areas are renovated and provide an old days atmosphere.
    Japanese style sweets food stands will fascinate the guests.
    Kawagoe is about 1 – 1.5 train trip from Tokyo.

    Kamakura is the first Samurai worriers government established in the late 12th century.
    The Buddhism are introduced to Japan in the 6th century, and flourished at Nara and Kyoto later. A newer Buddhism sect such as Zen has well developed at Kamakura area.
    Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine, Gigantic Buddha statue at Kotokuin Temple and the flower temple Hasedera Temple are must-see.
    Kamakura is about 1 – 1.5 train trip from Tokyo.

    Title: What's a Private One-Day Tokyo Tour Like? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were visitors from North America. The advance request made through an overseas agency was simply for "a tour of the main sights." When I reconfirmed the itinerary at the hotel meeting, they had not read the messages from the agency and had already visited various spots around Tokyo. I suggested places they had not yet seen and started the tour. They mentioned they were traveling to Japan, then Thailand, then Cambodia. One of the guests was familiar with the architect Tadao Ando, and the family of another was said to run a restaurant. We visited the Nijubashi Bridge at the main gate of the Imperial Palace, the Shibuya Crossing, Higashi-Shinjuku (requests to see cat-related displays are common, not just on this day), and Meiji Shrine, then headed to Omotesando for lunch. Being a Saturday, every restaurant was full. While waiting for a turn at a sushi restaurant, the guests said they wanted to shop at a well-known eyewear store. The sushi restaurant staff kindly adjusted our seating time several times, and the guests returned after about an hour. After spending 15 minutes at the sushi restaurant, we moved on to Asakusa. We passed through the very lively Nakamise shopping street and parted ways at the main hall of Senso-ji Temple. They were free-spirited guests through and through.

    What Is a Private Family Day Tour of Osaka Like? A Licensed Guide's Report Today I guided a group visiting from North America. The group included several children, and since everyone was very calm and well-behaved, we were able to follow the itinerary almost exactly as planned. As they mentioned they would spend the whole of the next day at Universal Studios Japan, I asked about the places they had not yet visited and arranged the tour accordingly. At the Umeda Sky Building, everyone seemed truly impressed by the view, and there were questions about the water in the river. All transportation was by taxi. At the Osaka Museum of Housing and Living, everyone tried on yukata, which they seemed to greatly enjoy. Since they had eaten breakfast late, we had a light lunch at McDonald's to save time, and this seemed to suit the guests well. Next, I took them to Osaka Castle, which was comparatively less crowded than usual, which was fortunate. I took commemorative photos at each of the photo spots. I was glad that they seemed to have a wonderful time.

    What Is a Private Hiroshima and Miyajima Tour Like? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were very warm and easygoing. As they had just arrived in Japan, I helped them install Suica and explained how to use it. They were delighted and seemed to really enjoy using Suica. At the Peace Memorial Park and the Atomic Bomb Museum, they explored very attentively and asked many questions. They also enjoyed okonomiyaki. On Miyajima, they savored oysters, ice cream, lemon soda, and momiji manju. Since they had just arrived in Japan and were still dealing with jet lag, we took plenty of breaks on Miyajima. The guests shared that it had been a truly wonderful day.

    Title: What's a Private Day Trip to Himeji Castle Like? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests moved through the day very smoothly and enjoyed each site enthusiastically, asking many questions along the way. At the garden, one of the guests was especially fascinated by the koi in the pond and the insects, and had a wonderful time. The group also visited a shrine and prayed very earnestly. One of the guests seemed to enjoy photography as a hobby and took time to capture many photos. After the tour, the group planned to return to their hotel in Osaka, so I recommended using the Special Rapid Service train and explained how to board and which platform to use. Since they wanted to have a meal, I guided them to a food court offering local dishes inside Himeji Station, where we parted ways. Note: The summer operating hours for both Himeji Castle and Koko-en Garden have been extended by about one hour, now open until 18:00. This applies through August 31 of this year.

    I would like to warmly welcome you to Japan this time. I am from the city of Kobe, which is of course, well-known for very tasty Kobe Beef . You can taste
    real genuine Kobe Beef here. Kobe is also called “Home of Japanese Sake” with lots of Sake breweries, and I recommend you would visit those breweries
    if you have any interest in Japanese Sake as well as one aspect of Japanese cultures. Of course, you can have tastings of various kinds of Sake there.

    Whenever during the tour, I always try to make it safe, pleasant and comfortable for all of the guests, which is my first priority. I am very much confident
    that you can have a pleasant and unforgettable experience in Japan. Just tell me about your preference; what you would like to like to see, have, know
    and eat and so on. Particularly, I hold the license for cooking qualified by the government here and maybe, I can reply you for questions related to the
    foods here. In this respect, I strongly recommend you would try not only famous Japanese cuisine such as Sushi, Tempura or Suki-yaki but some
    Japanese traditional local foods, like Tako-yaki, Okonomi-yaki and Kushkatsu. They are sometimes called the soul foods of Japan. Here is the brief
    explanation for these three foods.

    1) Tako-yaki
    Tako-yaki is a snack filled with pieces of octopus in a batter of flour , egg and soup stock. You can call them octopus dumplings or balls. “Tako” means
    octopus and “yaki” means grilled or broiled.
    2) Okonomi-yaki
    This word Okonomi-yaki means “cook just as you like” and you can use whatever you like as toppings, such as beef, pork, shrimp, squid and octopus.
    Okonomi-yaki is round shape and just like pancakes or pizza in shape mainly made from egg, flour and water.
    3) Kushi-katsu
    Kushi-katsu is skewered cutlet or deep-fried foods on a stick. “Kushi” means skewer and “katsu” means cutlet. Various kinds of foods are used for
    ingredients such as beef, pork, chicken, shrimp, squid, octopus and lots of kinds of vegetables.

    Actually, the western Japan including Osaka, Kobe and Himeji is called as “Home of such local soul foods”. You should give it a try and I am sure
    that you like them very much.

    I sincerely hope that I can be your tour guide this time in Kobe, Osaka and Himeji. If my guests said to me after the tour, “I have had a very good
    and pleasant time with you today. I hope I can come here again and name you as our guide”, which is my great pleasure. Moreover, I would be

    What Is a Full-Day Private Tokyo Tour Like? A Licensed Guide's Report on Tsukiji, Hama-rikyu, the Imperial Palace, Asakusa, and Meiji Shrine The weather was fair, and the guests moved quickly, so I was able to guide the planned course as scheduled. At Tsukiji, the guests enjoyed fresh seafood such as tuna and shrimp. At Hama-rikyu, we had various conversations about the differences between the flora of the guests' region and that of Tokyo. I learned that in places where winter temperatures drop below minus 30°C, as in the guests' area, plants like camellias cannot grow. At the East Gardens of the Imperial Palace, there were questions about the historical architecture and remains. There was not much strong interest in Asakusa, but the guests showed interest in the explanation that this entire area was burned down during the war. At Meiji Shrine, the guests showed strong interest in and admiration for the explanation that this forest is a man-made forest. The tour ended as scheduled at Meiji Shrine.
