    # What's a Private One-Day Kyoto Tour Like for an International Family? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were a group visiting Kyoto, having joined together for a trip to Japan. The day before, they had visited Nara, and late that night I received a message saying they were very tired and, due to the extreme heat, could not walk even short distances. I quickly proposed an itinerary that included two museums, but the reply was that they did not want to visit museums. In the end, the route was Hotel → the Bamboo Grove path in Arashiyama → Nijo Castle → Kinkaku-ji → lunch → Ryoan-ji → Fushimi Inari → Hotel, and apart from the Arashiyama bamboo grove, we took shortcut courses everywhere. The guests did not seem very interested in guide explanations at the sightseeing spots (giving off an atmosphere of "never mind that, let's move on quickly"), but along the way, in the car, and during meals, they asked many questions. Most were about Japanese society, the economy, and daily life — for example, the state of Kyoto's public transportation, real estate prices, the average annual income and minimum wage in Japan, which industries are competitive, which foods are produced domestically, and what everyday meals are like. Some of their questions were quite probing. For instance, when I explained that a typical Japanese breakfast comes with miso soup and is eaten with chopsticks, they asked fundamental questions such as "Why do Japanese people slurp miso soup?" and "Why do Japanese people use chopsticks?" As a guide, I found this very stimulating. For lunch, I took the guests to "Egao Gohan coco Hana-na," and they were satisfied.

The guests seemed quite affected by Japan's intense summer heat after arriving in the country, and they requested that we cancel the daytime garden walk, as strolling in the heat would be too difficult. Since Engyoji Temple on Mount Shosha is in the mountains and there is a shuttle bus from the ropeway to the Maniden Hall, we planned to use it, and we headed toward Himeji Castle along Miyuki-dori, a covered arcade kept cool by the cold air flowing from the shops. Along the way, one of the guests wanted to buy a brimmed hat at a hat shop, so we browsed as we walked. Before entering, I explained that inside the main keep of Himeji Castle, being a World Heritage site, we rely on natural breezes, but since a nice wind was blowing that day, I thought it would probably feel a little cooler inside, and then we passed through the entrance gate. At the photo spots, one of the guests took many pictures, and the guests listened with interest to explanations about the defensive mechanisms and the structure of the keep complex. We took breaks at mist spots, in the shade of trees, and where there was a pleasant breeze, and then went into the keep. Thanks to the good wind, it was surprisingly comfortable, but since the stairs are steep, we took more breaks overall. That seemed to work well, and the guests appeared to enjoy the Himeji Castle tour. However, the fatigue from traveling in the extreme heat seemed to have built up, so after lunch they requested that we also cancel Engyoji Temple on Mount Shosha and instead go shopping. Since one of the guests mentioned having a peanut and sesame allergy, I guided them to a restaurant for lunch and explained this to the owner, who took care of it. It was a renovated old-house cafe, and the large room had a big table set up like a sunken kotatsu, which the guests seemed to like very much. They enjoyed the food and were satisfied. They were pleased to have been able to relax and rest over a leisurely meal. It was not that anyone suffered heatstroke, but rather that they were tired from sightseeing under the blazing sun. It was a very hot day, so it was a pity that the guests could not enjoy the coolness of the mountains at Engyoji Temple on Mount Shosha, but the guests had lived in and traveled to several countries and their stories were fascinating, so for my part I had a wonderful time.

    Title: What's a Private One-Day Tour of Kyoto Like? A Licensed Guide's Report on Fushimi Inari, Kinkaku-ji, and Arashiyama The guests were a group visiting from Europe. We followed the classic route of Fushimi Inari Shrine, Kinkaku-ji, and the Arashiyama bamboo grove. Since the guests wanted to have sushi for lunch, I chose a sushi restaurant near Sanjo Station. The prices are reasonable and the taste and portions are quite good, so once again the guests were pleased. At Fushimi Inari, we stopped by the sacred rice field that we visit at the end if there is time. The rice was growing lush and green, and I explained that in November there is a harvest festival where the rice is cut and used to make sacred sake, which impressed the guests. In Arashiyama, after passing through the bamboo grove and turning right in front of Okochi Sanso, we headed down to a large pond where many lotus flowers were still in bloom, which was truly wonderful. Since we had a little time left at Saga-Arashiyama Station at the end, I guided the guests to the steam locomotive display beside the Torokko station, and they were very delighted with this as well.     In September 2019, I retired from an IT company after working there for 37 years, because I turned 60. At that time, I wanted to start something new. I had never lived outside of Japan or used English in my previous job. But, I had been learning English on my own for almost 50 years. I also love reading about Japanese history and culture. That’s why being a guide for English-speaking visitors is perfect for me.

    I got my government license in February 2020, but then COVID-19 happened, and Japan closed its borders. I had to wait three years to start working. But, that time was good for preparing. I learned more about Japan and traveled around Kyoto and other places.

    I finally started guiding in March 2023 and really enjoy it. Japan, especially Kyoto, has many historical places. Japan has four seasons, and I can experience the changes by walking outside with my clients. The more I guide, the more I know about it. Now, I guide about 15 days a month.

It was the first opening in six years, running for about two and a half months from mid-July to the end of September. Although it was not part of the original plan, I persuaded the guests by saying, "I strongly recommend visiting this," and we went inside. The exterior is a distinctive structure shaped like one of the floats of the Gion Festival, and inside, the walls along the entire staircase are covered with a wide variety of murals (drawing on Indian mythology), leaving an overwhelming impression. The view looking down over Higashiyama from the top floor was also excellent, and I highly recommend it. One of their strong interests in Japan was food, and on the day before this tour — their first full day after arrival — they reportedly started with an early morning Tsukiji tour and stayed out all day, even joining an evening food tour. Having gone through quite a demanding schedule, they wished to return to the Hotel once today to rest in preparation for their evening meal. During the tour, they greatly enjoyed lunch, a set of Japanese cuisine, and since it turned into a hot day, they ordered refills of cold beer. I explained about chawanmushi (savory steamed egg custard), but it seems to be a matter of taste, as some of it was left uneaten by one of the guests. While walking from the Imperial Palace toward Tokyo Station, we strolled and window-shopped along Marunouchi Naka-dori seeking the shade. By chance, we found a statue of a rugby player from Oceania placed on a bench, and they took many photos sitting together on that bench.

    What Is a Private Hiroshima and Miyajima Tour Like? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were visitors from North America. Unusually, they were arriving in Hiroshima from the Hakata direction. A long time ago, I once made the mistake of waiting on the platform for the Tokyo direction for guests who were actually coming from Hakata. To avoid repeating that error this time, I prepared by writing "Hakata" clearly on my hand with erasable marker. As I always feel, nothing is as dangerous as making assumptions. 💦 Since one of the guests was not feeling well in the legs, I went ahead of them to secure the elevator, just as I had done the day before. One of the guests was a very serious person who did not even smile at a few small jokes. However, on the ferry back from Miyajima, a strong wind blew and my hat was carried away. Seeing my bald head for the first time, the guests laughed as if trying to hold it in. I was glad I could help them relax.

    I traveled many countries in my younger days. I traveled Europe, US, China, India, US, Mexico, Peru Australia, NZ, and so on.
    I decided to use this experience to become a guide.
    I’m afraid but no tipping required, because cycling guides are not allowed to have tipping in my association. And you do not need to pay for my lunch, because my lunch is prepared by our group.

    What Is a Full-Day Private Kyoto Tour Like? A Licensed Guide's Report on Fushimi Inari, Arashiyama, and Kinkaku-ji The guests were visiting Japan for the first time from Europe. They requested Fushimi Inari and wanted to go early in the morning, so the hotel meeting time was set for 7:30. We met almost as scheduled and started the tour. During the tour, we took two smoke breaks at a smoking area near JR Saga-Arashiyama Station, once on the way there and once on the way back. At the final stop, Nishiki Market, we chose a restaurant with a smoking room for lunch. The guests were very close and enjoyed taking photos of each other. Since English was a foreign language for both of us, communication was sometimes a little difficult. Fushimi Inari and Arashiyama were as crowded as ever, but Kinkaku-ji was not too crowded, so it was easy to take photos there. It might be more crowded in the early morning hours. The photo was taken in Arashiyama.

    What's a Full-Day Private Tour of Tokyo's Main Sights Like? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were a group from North America who wanted to visit Tokyo's main highlights, so I guided them along the itinerary above. Since the East Gardens of the Imperial Palace were closed on Fridays, I took them to Hamarikyu Gardens instead, and because we started early, we visited the Tsukiji Outer Market beforehand. The heat of midsummer had returned, making it tough weather, but I believe the guests were able to enjoy the day fully. We skipped lunch due to time constraints, but they tried Asakusa's famous "melon bread with matcha ice cream," which I think they were very happy with.
