Title: What Is a Private Hiroshima Peace Memorial Tour Like? A Licensed Guide's Report I had the pleasure of guiding a group visiting from North America. The guests currently split their time between two locations in North America. At the museum, they viewed the exhibits with great attentiveness, and they listened, moved to tears, to the testimony of a hibakusha survivor. They also listened with deep interest to my own experience as a second-generation atomic bomb survivor, particularly the story of how my father passed away early due to an atomic-bomb-related illness. Among their questions, they asked me, "Do you still hold resentment toward the country that dropped the bomb?" I answered, "Because I was very young, I simply felt this was the way things were, so I do not hold such feelings in particular." I also shared that, at the time, I had felt something more like admiration toward that country as a prosperous nation. Just as there is a Japanese proverb about "letting the past flow away like water," many atomic bomb survivors choose not to resent the past but to live straightforwardly toward the future. The guests seemed deeply moved by this attitude.

Title: What's a Private Kyoto Day Tour Like When It Rains? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were a group visiting from Asia. One of the guests had been to Japan five years earlier, but for the rest of the group it was their first visit to Japan. Since the forecast called for rain followed by clouds, we pushed the start time back by one hour the day before. Even so, we were caught in heavy rain at Fushimi Inari. Afterward we went to Kiyomizu-dera Temple, and when I had guided the group to the west gate, one of the guests expressed an interest in Gion and in geiko and maiko. So we cut the planned visits to the main hall of Kiyomizu-dera and Yasaka Shrine, strolled around the Hanamikoji area of Gion instead, and parted ways there. What Is a Private Nara Day Tour Like? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were from North America. They had a deep knowledge of the diversity and values of Buddhism, which made explaining things especially rewarding, and we continued to have in-depth exchanges that went into great detail. They shared the opinion, "You often hear people say Nara is a boring place where you only see deer and the Great Buddha, but that's a big mistake." I would love to help change that impression. It is truly a shame, because Nara is a wonderful destination where you can somehow cover Japanese history from ancient times to the present all in a single day.

Hello! Thank you for choosing Nara! I bet you’ll love Nara. I specialize in Nara because Nara is the unique place where in one day you can cover the history and religions of Japan from the ancient times to the post war era while enjoying rambling in the UNESCO World Heritage park, having communication with lovely deer, surrounded with the beautiful nature.
I grew up in Nara, went university in Kyoto, enjoyed teaching at high schools and a university in Osaka. The three former capitals of Japan are home to me.
After retiring from teaching I began guiding so that I can meet various people from various corners of the world with a variety of cultures and backgrounds. Each time I guide, I find it hugely rewarding because I learn a lot from my guests sharing the history, culture and all that I know about Nara, Kyoto and Osaka.
I used to be a marathon runner, mountain climber and skier though I am not much of them anymore.
What I especially recommend is to stay in Nara a couple of days and enjoy communicating with friendly deer while visiting UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Nara in early morning, temples and shrines at night are well worth experiencing.

Can You Do a 4-Hour Private Walking Tour of Kanazawa? A Licensed Guide's Report The day before, a heavy rain emergency warning had been issued for the Noto region of Ishikawa Prefecture, but since both the forecast and the actual rainfall in the Kanazawa area were not a problem, I contacted the guests via a messaging app to confirm the meeting at the originally scheduled time. On the day, there were some moments of light rain, but the guests seemed to enjoy the course designated by the arranging travel agency as planned. However, I felt that within a 4-hour tour, it would be difficult to fully guide all of Kenrokuen Garden and Kanazawa Castle Park as included in the agency's designated course this time. At the handshake at the end of the tour, a tip was pressed into my hand, so I gratefully accepted it.

We toured three sightseeing spots they had requested in advance (Kinkaku-ji, Nijo Castle, and Fushimi Inari Taisha) using the bus and JR. On the way from Nijo Castle to JR Nijo Station, we had lunch at a retro café adjacent to Shinsen-en. It has recently become popular with inbound visitors, so it took some time to be seated, but the guests seemed to enjoy it very much. Although it was hot, everyone walked energetically and appeared very satisfied. As they wished to return to their accommodation from Fushimi Inari Taisha, I had them board a taxi and saw them off.

What Is a Private One-Day Kyoto Tour Like? A Licensed Guide's Report Today's guests were a group of work colleagues visiting from North America. They had arrived in Japan the previous weekend, and until yesterday they had struggled considerably with unusually hot weather for September. Although it rained at times, the weather in Kyoto today turned noticeably cooler. They were interested in folding fans, chopsticks, and ceramics, and purchased a large amount of souvenirs. Since they had mentioned wanting to try conveyor-belt sushi, I took them to a restaurant right next to Nishiki Market. I believe they enjoyed the tour of Kyoto.

Can You Do a Private Day Tour of Tokyo Starting at 8:00? A Licensed Guide's Report The guest was a visitor from Asia. The guest was pleased with the guiding, which included some communication in their own language. Since the guest expressed a wish to learn about culture and history, I also shared the proper manners for praying at shrines and temples, and the guest put them into practice. Because we started at 8:00 and the weather was rainy, there were no crowds and the itinerary progressed ahead of schedule. Adapting flexibly, I added Hie Shrine, which was convenient to reach that day, and Shinjuku Golden Gai to the plan. We parted ways in Shinjuku Sanchome shortly after 14:00. As the guest was scheduled to fly home from Haneda that evening, the guest planned to return to the hotel without stopping for lunch.

    • 14:00 Break, shopping @ Shizuoka Station Building
    • 15:45 Disband @ Shimizu Station

Title: What Is a Private Cruise Shore Excursion in Shizuoka Like? A Licensed Guide's Report on Miho no Matsubara, Nihondaira, and Sunpu Castle Park I guided guests visiting from Europe who arrived by cruise ship. One of the guests was not confident in English and had difficulty speaking clearly, so communication was challenging, but with the support of the other guest who was fluent in English, we were able to carry out the tour. Since rain had been forecast for several days, I prepared alternative plans, but as it was only light rain in the morning, we proceeded as scheduled. We chartered a taxi at Shimizu Port and visited Miho no Matsubara and Nihondaira. While the guests were viewing the exhibits inside Mihoshirube, the rain stopped, and they were able to enjoy the scenery at Miho no Matsubara and Nihondaira (Mount Fuji was not visible). We had planned to have lunch in the downtown area of Shizuoka City, but as the guests said they were not hungry and did not need lunch, we skipped the lunch plan and went to Sunpu Castle Park. The guests were a little disappointed, saying they had expected a castle keep. (I had explained in advance by email that the castle keep no longer remains and that the other buildings are reconstructions.) As soon as we began strolling through Sunpu Castle Park, it started raining heavily, making it impossible to move around, so we took shelter at a shop inside the park. Thanks to the kindness of the shop staff, we received some origami paper, and the guests were pleased when I made a paper crane for them. Since it did not seem the rain would stop, I proposed changing the itinerary to a museum visit, which I had mentioned in advance as an alternative, but the guests said they did not want to go to a museum. Instead, they wished to have pancakes, so I guided them to a pancake shop inside the Shizuoka Station building. However, several people were waiting in line, and we could not enter right away. When I asked the shop staff about the waiting time, they replied that they did not know, and one of the guests became very frustrated, saying, "There are open seats, so why can't we go in!" I should have explained in advance the possibility of having to wait before entering. Since the guest did not like waiting, I instead guided them to a nearby mille crepe shop, after which they seemed satisfied. Because the guests did shopping for souvenirs at Shizuoka Station, there was not enough time to take them back to Shimizu Port, but I guided them as far as boarding the shuttle bus for cruise ship passengers at Shimizu Station, and we parted ways. (I discussed the itinerary with the guests and they agreed.) When we arrived at Shimizu Station, Mount Fuji revealed itself, so we were able to take photos with smiles and see them off.

Hello, I’m Anne. I was born and raised in Shizuoka. As a student, I volunteered as an interpreter guide in Kyoto. I love traveling and even worked for a travel company in the past. I like learning different cultures, too. After graduating from a graduate school in Australia, I came back to Shizuoka and have been teaching at a high school and a university. I am also certified as a Japanese (language) teacher. Through my experiences living in different places and my interest in Japan, I realized again the charms of Japan and Shizuoka. This passion for sharing the attractions of Japan, especially Shizuoka, led me to become a national licensed guide interpreter in March 2024. Shizuoka is an attractive destination for its rich nature, fascinating history and culture, and delicious local foods. I would be delighted to help you discover more about Shizuoka and make your stay even more memorable!

    Tour Itinerary

    • Hotel 9:30 ー Tokyo Station Character Street ー 11:15 Shibuya Crossing Center Gai ー Shibuya 109 ー 12:00 Lunch Sushisei (Shibuya) ー 13:10 Harajuku Takeshita Street ー 14:00 Harajuku Ninja Cafe ー 15:00 Disband at Takeshita Street

During the intense summer heat, and by request, the itinerary was built mainly around indoor visits. The guests requested sushi for lunch, so I made a reservation at a sushi restaurant located across from 109. The Character Street at Tokyo Station was very popular with the guests. It has many spots for taking commemorative photos and is a very convenient place to visit. Moving on to Shibuya and Harajuku, the visits stayed focused on lively, popular attractions, and temples and shrines were left out. On Takeshita Street in Harajuku, the guests were surprised by the large crowds but enjoyed themselves. In addition, at a ninja cafe, the staff were very attentive, and the guests appeared to be delighted.

What Is a 2-Day Private Tokyo Tour Like? A Licensed Guide's Report on Tsukiji, Hamarikyu, and Harajuku This was a two-day, consecutive-day private tour for a guest from North America. On the first day, we first headed to the Tsukiji Outer Market. Since the guest was staying at a hotel, I considered taking the Toei Oedo Line from Tochomae Station to Tsukijishijo Station, but because a visit to the Metropolitan Government Building was scheduled at the start of the second day, I decided to go from Shinjuku Station to Tsukiji using JR and the metro. At Tsukiji, we stopped by Tsukiji Honganji Temple before heading to the Outer Market. The guest was very interested in food, and enjoyed a savory fritter at Kibun, a wagyu skewer (I would like to check the shop name next time), and a slice of medium-fatty tuna at Saito Suisan, and purchased a shrimp snack at Edoichi. At the fish market, the guest looked at the fish very intently, and when I asked, I learned that fishing is a hobby and that the guest fillets fish personally as well, which made a lot of sense. After stopping by Namiyoke Shrine, we walked to Hamarikyu Gardens. I guided the guest through the teahouse, the duck hunting grounds, and the Shinbi no Hiyama, and then we crossed the Otsutai Bridge over the tidal pond. The guest was moved by the beauty of the gardens. After hydrating at the rest area, I showed the cosmos field and the 300-year-old pine tree, and we headed toward Shimbashi Station. Upon arriving at Harajuku, we first had lunch at Kyushu Jangara Ramen. This too suited the guest's taste, which was great. After lunch, I guided the guest through Meiji Shrine, and then we walked along Takeshita Street. What especially caught the guest's eye was a cute micro pig cafe. I guided the guest to where the street meets Meiji Street, and after sharing the highlights of Ura-Harajuku and Omotesando, the first day came to an end.

Hello, my name is Miyuki. I am a National Government Licensed Guide Interpreter since 2019. I was born in Saitama, 30 km north of Tokyo. I have lived there until today. I like Japanese traditional culture. I love bonsai and work as a guide in the Omiya Bonsai Art Museum. I am also learning the tea ceremony. Both bonsai and tea ceremonies make you feel relaxed and refreshed. I used to be a member of a Japanese archery club when I was a university student. Visiting shrines, temples and traditional gardens also makes me happy. You cannot miss eating Japanese food and sweets after visiting there. Let’s enjoy walking around Japan together!
