    What Is a Private One-Day Kyoto Tour Like? A Licensed Guide's Report on Kyoto Imperial Palace, Kinkaku-ji, Gion, and Kiyomizu-dera The guests were very interested in the history and architecture of the Kyoto Imperial Palace and listened attentively to the explanations. They asked many questions about traditional Japanese architecture and imperial court culture, and appeared to deeply enjoy learning about the history of Kyoto. At Kinkaku-ji, the guests enjoyed a relaxed stroll amid the beautiful gardens and quiet atmosphere. They were fond of the view of Kinkaku-ji reflected on the pond and took many photographs. In the Gion area, the guests took an interest in the townscape and traditional culture, and we had an enjoyable conversation about Geiko and Maiko culture. They fully enjoyed the atmosphere unique to Kyoto. At the final stop, Kiyomizu-dera, the guests were very moved by the panoramic view of Kyoto city, making for a memorable conclusion to the tour. The guests also kindly treated me to a Kobe beef lunch, for which I am sincerely grateful. I also thank them very much for kindly cooperating with photographs for promotional purposes. The tour maintained a warm and enjoyable atmosphere throughout, and concluded smoothly without any major problems or trouble.

    What Is a Private One-Day Kyoto Tour Like on the Final Day of a Japan Trip? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were visiting from North America. They had traveled through Tokyo, Hakone, Hida-Takayama, and Kanazawa, and had arrived in Kyoto the day before, with today being the final day of their trip before flying home the next day. Since it was their last day, I felt a great sense of responsibility and set out determined to do my very best. I explained everything from scratch as a kind of grand summary — Japan's political history, religious culture, the importance of Onmyodo, food, the spirit of Zen, how Shinto and Buddhism intertwine in daily life, and the messages conveyed by karesansui dry landscape gardens and chisen-kaiyu strolling pond gardens. Having already spent two weeks in Japan, the guests recognized many of these terms, but they tend to slip from memory, so I believe hearing my explanations again helped deepen their understanding. At the end, as I usually do, I asked for a review, and to my surprise they accessed the site and wrote one on the spot. They said that since they would be flying the next day and would surely forget, they would write it right then. This may have been the fastest I have ever received a review. I was very grateful. They also gave me two SUICA cards, saying they would no longer be using them. They said there might be some balance left, or there might not — they weren't quite sure — but they didn't need them anyway, so they handed them over. As I took them home, they joked that it would be nice if there was a lot left, and I checked on my way back, half-hoping for a decent amount — only to find each had a balance of 98 yen (not USD)! But I was grateful all the same.

    What Can You See on a Rainy-Day Private Tour of Tokyo? A Licensed Guide's Report The guest was a traveler from the Middle East, visiting Japan for the second time. Since the guest works in the travel industry, I was mindful throughout the tour. Due to unfortunate rain, we changed the plans that had been agreed upon before arrival and followed the itinerary described above. As this was an Instagram tour, the guest took lots of videos and photos while walking, much like a YouTuber, and wanted photos with themselves included, so today I also served as the photographer. At Asakusa, we first filmed Nakamise and Senso-ji from the observation deck. Since it was not the guest's first visit to Senso-ji, they seemed to prefer the back streets. The Yanaka-Nezu-Sendagi area, which we added due to the day-of change, was a great success. The guest's hometown is said to be a city of cats, so they felt an affinity with Yanaka, which is also known as a town of cats. At Meiji Shrine, the guest purchased an ema and wrote a wish on it. The guest liked everything about Shinjuku and plans to revisit later. Although we were not blessed with good weather, the tour ended with the guest saying, "I was able to see more things than I expected, which was great" (perhaps just diplomatic politeness?).

It was their first time in Japan, and the trip had been given to them as a gift. They had been encouraged to visit Kyoto and decided to come here. I took them to Fushimi Inari, Nijo Castle, Kinkaku-ji, and the Kyoto Imperial Palace. Since it was a 6-hour tour with a fairly demanding schedule, they had a quick lunch. They said all four locations were wonderful, but they especially enjoyed Nijo Castle, as they could go inside the castle and feel its history, which they liked best. At the end of the tour, they wanted to buy Kyoto souvenirs and a cooking knife, so I took them to Shinkyogoku and we said our goodbyes there.

We talked about various aspects of culture and daily life in their region as we walked. Although it was their first visit to Japan, they had studied Japanese culture and history quite thoroughly before arriving, and they listened to my explanations very attentively. Since they could visit the standard tourist sites on their own, they wanted to explore the Higashiyama area, so I guided them to Kiyomizu-dera Temple, Ginkaku-ji Temple, the Philosopher's Path, and Nanzen-ji Temple. Explaining concepts such as Zen and wabi-sabi was challenging, but I believe they understood them to a reasonable degree. At the end, they said they were going to visit a handicraft center, so we parted ways in front of Heian Shrine.

    What Is a Private One-Day Kyoto Tour Like? A Licensed Guide's Report on Ginkaku-ji, the Philosopher's Path, and Kiyomizu-dera The guests were a group visiting from North America, and everyone was very friendly and shared many stories with us. Since their tour itinerary for the following day had already been set, I chose places that would not overlap. Ginkaku-ji in the morning was not very crowded, so we were able to take our time. As they were going to visit Kinkaku-ji the next day, I gave a little comparison between the two temples. The Philosopher's Path was also quiet, so we walked slowly while the guests asked many questions about Japanese culture and history. Along the way, we also stopped by Otoyo Shrine. For lunch, we went to a galette restaurant that offered a gluten-free menu. Since it was a slightly late hour, we were lucky to be seated right away. At Nanzen-ji, the guests were interested in the Hojo Garden and the Suirokaku aqueduct. We then took a taxi to Kiyomizu-dera. One of the guests had been looking forward to trying to lift Benkei's iron staff, so even though there was a long line, they gave it a try. Although our viewing time became a little shorter, they were moved by the three-storied pagoda and the wooden stage of the main hall. As the guests wanted to explore a bit more around Kiyomizu-dera after the visit, we parted ways a little way down the slope from the Niomon Gate.

We met at Himeji Station and toured Castle View, Himeji Castle, Koko-en Garden, the rooftop and first floor of Egret Himeji, and Genmyoan, ending the tour at Genmyoan. This day fell in the middle of the Himeji Castle Festival, so Otemae-dori was lively with a parade. Himeji Castle was somewhat crowded, but we were able to tour it without any particular problems. The azaleas at Koko-en Garden were beautiful, and the guests enjoyed some of the finest sake at the Ryuriki shop, which put them in great spirits. I believe it turned out to be a wonderful tour.

    Can You Visit Katsura Imperial Villa on a Private Kyoto Tour? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were visiting from North America. Before the tour, there had been a request to visit Katsura Imperial Villa, so I made a reservation in advance. The visit is conducted at set times on a group basis. In the past, visitors wore headphones and listened to an English audio guide, but now the English guidance has to be downloaded via an app. The guests chose not to use it, out of concern that making noise might disturb the people around them. When bringing overseas guests, it is better to reserve one of the guided tours held about twice a day specifically for foreign visitors. It had been a while since my last visit to Katsura Imperial Villa, but its beauty remains the finest in Kyoto. We had planned to go to Arashiyama next, but since anything seen after Katsura Imperial Villa would only seem less impressive, I quickly changed the plan to Sanjusangendo. The guests were very pleased with it.

    What's a Private Day Tour of Sapporo Like? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were visitors from North America who understood a little Japanese. They were very friendly and seemed to enjoy themselves throughout the day. At Odori Park, the Lilac Festival had begun, the lilacs were at their best, and the area was bustling with many people. At Nijo Market, we first had miso ramen, which was one of the guests' requests. At a shop where photos and sampling were welcome, the guests enjoyed chatting with the staff and bought some dried goods. On Tanukikoji Shopping Street, one of the guests bought a personal seal (hanko) set, and another looked for nail clippers at a specialty cutlery shop but could not find one they liked. We had originally planned to take a taxi, but since we had some extra time, we took the streetcar to the ropeway station, and the guests were delighted. At the summit, at the "Sanctuary of Lovers," they bought a padlock and pledged their everlasting love. I explained how to get back to their hotel, and we said our goodbyes at the summit.
