    • 10:15-11-15 Tokyo Station
    • 11:30-13:30 Tsukiji Outer Market, lunch, Tsukiji Hongwanji Temple

What Is a Private Tokyo Walking Tour of Tsukiji Like? A Licensed Guide's Report At the guests' request, the tour started at 10:00. First, the guests wanted help with the procedures for their bullet train tickets, so I took them to Tokyo Station. After that, I guided them to the Tsukiji Outer Market and Tsukiji Hongwanji Temple as they had requested. At the Tsukiji Outer Market, the guests enjoyed tasting tamagoyaki (rolled omelet) with great interest, and they liked the wasabi-flavored bean snacks and the sesame samples so much that they purchased them. They enjoyed strolling around while looking at the products in the various shops and taking photos. The guests were impressed by the exterior of Tsukiji Hongwanji Temple and went inside, where they took an interest in the interior decorations and the Buddhist altar.

What Is a Private Hiroshima and Miyajima Day Tour Like? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were a group visiting from abroad. The members of the group had different interests, but I believe it turned out to be a satisfying tour for everyone. In particular, the group showed strong interest in the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum. At Miyajima, the tide was near high, and the group was pleased with the scenery of the Great Torii Gate and Itsukushima Shrine. As this was in the latter half of their trip in Japan, part of the group seemed a little tired. For lunch at Miyajima, the group enjoyed an oyster set meal with sake as well as fried oysters, and they appeared to eat and drink with great enjoyment.

Hi! My name is Kazuhisa To. After completing graduate school, I moved to Hiroshima—and have now lived here for over 42 years. I earned a Ph.D. through a national university’s professional program while working at Mazda Motor Corporation. Five years before retiring from the company, I was seconded to Hiroshima University, a national university, where I served as a specially appointed professor. In addition to my domestic career, I spent a total of about five and a half years living and working abroad. These international experiences have given me valuable cross-cultural understanding and the ability to connect comfortably with guests from around the world. Currently, as a Hiroshima Prefectural Government Licensed Guide Interpreter, I introduce visitors not only to famous attractions such as Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park and Miyajima, but also to the local lifestyle, culture, and culinary delights, tailored to your interests. I hope to provide each guest with a memorable experience that stays in your heart.
I look forward to meeting you here in Hiroshima!

Can You Visit Hakone on a Private Day Tour? A Licensed Guide's Report on Lake Ashi and Local Crafts The guests were a friendly and intellectually curious group. In the morning Mount Fuji was clearly visible, but in the afternoon it suddenly disappeared behind the clouds, and the guests were delighted that their timing had been so good. They had a strong interest in the Japanese language and Japanese culture, and listened attentively as I introduced kanji characters, the legends of Mount Fuji and Lake Ashi, and how Shinto, Buddhism, and daily life in Japan are connected. The presentation on the historic traditional craft of Yosegi marquetry at Maruyama Bussan was met with applause and great delight, and the guests purchased many souvenirs. Since they would be returning to Tokyo in the evening the next day and asked for recommendations on sightseeing in Hakone, I introduced the nearby Okada Museum of Art along with the Hakone Open-Air Museum.

    • 14:45 @ Food court inside JR Himeji Station (via Miyuki-dori Shopping Street)

Title: What's a Private Himeji Castle Tour Like? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were a group visiting from North America. Everyone seemed to be quite fond of Japan, and some of them spoke a little Japanese. From the outset, some of the guests showed a strong interest in Himeji Castle and asked me some very in-depth questions. While at the moat within the castle grounds, we happened to see a "white heron" — the very bird after which the castle is named — descend, and everyone, including me as the guide, was delighted. (I have seen white herons a few times before, but this was the first time as a guide that I witnessed one flying down from elsewhere. It appears small at the far right of the photo. Some people say that seeing a white heron brings good fortune.) They also purchased souvenirs at the gift shop within the castle. On the way to the station, we stopped by a specialty store famous for its handmade "beckoning cat" figures in the shopping arcade, and they bought souvenirs there as well. As the guests wished to try local food for lunch, I guided them to a food court inside the station, where they enjoyed dishes such as "eki-soba," "akashiyaki," "anago-ju" (grilled conger eel over rice), and "kaisen-don" (seafood rice bowl). Afterward, since some of the guests were a little tired and they wished to enjoy shopping on their own, we parted ways with about an hour of the tour remaining. They were very pleased with the handmade drawstring pouch I presented to them. One slightly regrettable point was that some of the guests did not show much interest in the sites and seemed absorbed in their phones. One of the guests told me that they would love to have me guide them again next time to visit Kobe, and that they would recommend me to their acquaintances and friends. While this may well have been a courtesy, I felt very grateful for the kind words.

    Dear my guests,

This is (Mr.) Yama, greeting from Kobe, Japan.
I would like to warmly welcome you to Japan this time. I am from the city of Kobe, which is of course, well-known for very tasty Kobe Beef . You can taste
real genuine Kobe Beef here. Kobe is also called “Home of Japanese Sake” with lots of Sake breweries, and I recommend you would visit those breweries
if you have any interest in Japanese Sake as well as one aspect of Japanese cultures. Of course, you can have tastings of various kinds of Sake there.

Whenever during the tour, I always try to make it safe, pleasant and comfortable for all of the guests, which is my first priority. I am very much confident
that you can have a pleasant and unforgettable experience in Japan. Just tell me about your preference; what you would like to like to see, have, know
and eat and so on. Particularly, I hold the license for cooking qualified by the government here and maybe, I can reply you for questions related to the
foods here. In this respect, I strongly recommend you would try not only famous Japanese cuisine such as Sushi, Tempura or Suki-yaki but some
Japanese traditional local foods, like Tako-yaki, Okonomi-yaki and Kushkatsu. They are sometimes called the soul foods of Japan. Here is the brief
    explanation for these three foods.

    1) Tako-yaki
Tako-yaki is a snack filled with pieces of octopus in a batter of flour , egg and soup stock. You can call them octopus dumplings or balls. “Tako” means
octopus and “yaki” means grilled or broiled.
    2) Okonomi-yaki
This word Okonomi-yaki means “cook just as you like” and you can use whatever you like as toppings, such as beef, pork, shrimp, squid and octopus.
Okonomi-yaki is round shape and just like pancakes or pizza in shape mainly made from egg, flour and water.
    3) Kushi-katsu
Kushi-katsu is skewered cutlet or deep-fried foods on a stick. “Kushi” means skewer and “katsu” means cutlet. Various kinds of foods are used for
ingredients such as beef, pork, chicken, shrimp, squid, octopus and lots of kinds of vegetables.

Actually, the western Japan including Osaka, Kobe and Himeji is called as “Home of such local soul foods”. You should give it a try and I am sure
that you like them very much.

I sincerely hope that I can be your tour guide this time in Kobe, Osaka and Himeji. If my guests said to me after the tour, “I have had a very good
and pleasant time with you today. I hope I can come here again and name you as our guide”, which is my great pleasure. Moreover, I would be
great honored if they say “I like Japan now thanks to you”.

Looking forward to meeting you soon here.

Title: What's a Private Day Tour from Osaka to Nara Like? A Licensed Guide's Report At 9:00, I met the guests at their hotel, and after introductions we boarded a taxi and set off for Nara. The guests asked me to plan a "leave-it-to-the-guide" tour, so I first headed to Horyuji Temple to introduce Prince Shotoku, who is regarded as the father of Japanese Buddhism. Although road congestion along the way took more time than expected, we were able to enjoy a lot of conversation in the car. The guests were especially fond of sumo and had enjoyed two days of the Osaka tournament during this trip. I gave an unhurried tour of Horyuji Temple, and at the end we visited a memorial honoring figures such as a Harvard University professor who helped ensure that the ancient capitals of Nara and Kyoto were spared from bombing during the Pacific War. At the next destination, Kasuga Taisha Shrine, I explained the relationship between the shrine and the deer the guests had been looking forward to seeing, and after entering the precincts I explained Shinto. Afterward, the guests enjoyed a rice porridge lunch, and then had a wonderful time feeding the deer in Nara Park. I then guided them through the Nandaimon Gate and the Great Buddha Hall, and finally we walked to Kaidan-do, where we boarded the car to move toward Kyoto. The guests carried a goshuin stamp book and diligently collected stamps at each place we visited. As the Nara sightseeing came to an end and we were about to head to the hotel, the guests remembered from our conversation in the car that I live in Nara, and said, "You can just take the car straight back to the hotel, so there's no need for you to come all the way to Kyoto. Let's part ways here." Following their kind suggestion, we said our goodbyes at Nara Station.

After a rather long teaching experience at Japanese college, I converted my career about 6 years ago into working as a tour guide for the tourists visiting Japan.
As my career overseas, I’ve been in the UN and the Japanese Embassy, all in the USA, totaling more than 6 years.
And then I had made a big change in my career from a diplomat to an academic researcher. For that career to achieve, I studied abroad and won a doctorate degree in linguistics from Indiana University and landed a teaching position at college in Japan.
With all these interesting and exciting experiences I’ve made myself ready to enrich your tour and make it both enjoyable and worthwhile.

What Is a 2-Day Private Tokyo Tour Like? A Licensed Guide's Report on Asakusa, Roppongi, and Hamarikyu This was the second day of a private Tokyo tour. Based on the "places I'd like to visit" mentioned during the previous day's conversation, I efficiently incorporated them into the original itinerary. The additional areas were Roppongi and Hamarikyu, and at both of them the guest commented, "Wonderful. I really loved it," and took many photographs. The guest was always considering the relationship between the subject and the light. In particular, after visiting Sensoji Temple, we saw Tokyo Skytree up close from Sumida Park, and I introduced a good photo spot there. At that moment, the guest quickly judged the best position to stand as a photographer and moved accordingly. Then the guest showed me a photo of Tokyo Skytree taken together with early-blooming cherry blossoms. Even to an amateur like myself, it was clearly on a different level at first glance, so much so that I found myself asking, "Are you perhaps a professional photographer?" At the start of the tour, the guest had mentioned that, if there was energy left after we parted, they might climb Tokyo Skytree from there. However, wishing to see as much as possible even at the expense of lunchtime (the guest replenished energy in two servings with two croissants purchased in the morning), we continued strolling, so understandably the guest became tired. We gave up on the Tokyo Skytree observation deck, and it was decided to buy a sushi bento and return to the hotel to eat. So I guided the guest to the sushi section of the basement food floor of the Ginza Mitsukoshi department store, from which it was easy to return to the hotel, and we parted ways. Tomorrow, the guest is scheduled to depart early in the morning to join a tour to Mount Fuji with a vehicle.

What Is a Private Kyoto Zen Temple Tour Like? A Licensed Guide's Report The tour ended up covering the representative Zen temples associated with three generations of the Ashikaga shogunate, and I believe the guests enjoyed learning about the differences between them as I explained the historical background of the era in which each temple was founded. I was a little taken aback by the flurry of questions from one of the guests (such as how President Trump is viewed in Japan and the current state of relations with China), but I answered strictly as my own personal opinions. Finally, when I explained about the Philosopher's Path, the guests said that although the cherry blossoms had not yet bloomed, they still wanted to walk along it, so I explained how to take the subway from Keage, and the tour concluded there.

During our advance planning, the itinerary was set for Nijo Castle, Fushimi Inari, and Gion, but on the day of the tour the guests strongly wished to visit the Arashiyama area, so we changed the plan on short notice and decided to visit Fushimi Inari first and then head to Arashiyama. Within a four-hour window that included travel time, combining Fushimi Inari and Arashiyama made for a tight schedule, but by limiting Fushimi Inari to the inner shrine (Okusha) before turning back, and focusing on the garden of Tenryu-ji and the bamboo grove in Arashiyama, I was able to meet the guests' requests, and they enjoyed the tour.

Title: What's a Private One-Day Kyoto Tour Like for First-Time Visitors? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were visiting Japan for the first time from Europe. Since they left most of the itinerary up to me, I planned a recommended course, and I believe they enjoyed every stop. In particular, they showed great interest in Nijo Castle and Sanjusangendo, not only for their appeal as tourist sites but also for their historical background, repeatedly exclaiming "impressive." The weather was fine that day, and as the temperature rose toward the afternoon, they decided to skip Jonangu, which had been planned as the final stop, in order to prepare for a night tour in Gion. As a result, we parted ways a little earlier than scheduled.

Title: What Is a Relaxed Private Sightseeing Day in Tokyo Like? A Licensed Guide's Report on Shinjuku Gyoen, Shibuya, and Nakameguro The guests were a group visiting from North America who, upon retiring, had decided to travel to many places around the world before it might become physically difficult, and had been traveling to different countries each year. On this trip, they were touring Japan, Thailand, and South Korea in one journey. They mentioned that their luggage was packed to bursting, since they had brought both summer clothes for a tropical country and winter clothes for Japan. When we met in the morning, they told me that the previous day they had joined a 10-hour tour of Hakone, and that, including Thailand, they had grown tired of shrines and temples, so we agreed to make today a chill-out day, which is how the above itinerary came about. Since they wanted to see cherry blossoms, we started at Shinjuku Gyoen. One of the guests had some back and knee trouble, and had mentioned that although the previous day's Hakone guide had been a good person, they had walked quickly and it was hard to keep up, so we walked at a slow pace. Both wanted to learn as much as possible about the country's culture and history and to know the local style, so even though it was a relaxing day, they listened enthusiastically to the explanations along the way. In particular, they seemed very interested in the story of Perry's arrival and the Meiji Restoration (I've forgotten why this came up at Shinjuku Gyoen), the idea that Japanese cuisine reflects the four seasons, and the way locals drink at izakaya. When they actually experienced the Japanese style of toasting first with beer and then ordering whatever drink each person likes at Shibuya Yokocho, they enjoyed it greatly. We were also lucky to find seats at the Starbucks in Nakameguro, which one of the guests had requested, and the three of us enjoyed tea together. A family member works at a Starbucks in North America, and they had wanted to visit STARBUCKS RESERVE while in Japan. This was my first time visiting there as well, and we were fortunate to get seats. (It's always crowded and I usually have to give up, but this time we got seats despite the spring holiday season — lucky!) Since they were going to Nagano the next day to see the snow monkeys, we parted ways somewhat reluctantly, and I told them the path is flat but mountainous, so they should head back early and rest well. They seemed to really like the word "KANPAI," and gave me their OK to post photos on the website, which I hadn't received in a while.
