After spending time in Tokyo, they stayed in Hakone before planning to head to Kyoto the following day. In advance, they had requested the "black eggs" of Owakudani and Hakone Shrine. On the way to Owakudani, we stopped by Gora Park so they could enjoy the rose garden, which was in full bloom, and they took many photographs there. At Owakudani, they were delighted to finally get their hands on the long-awaited "black eggs," enjoying them along with a view of Mount Fuji, whose summit was just peeking out from the clouds. At Hakone Shrine, which we reached by pirate ship, I gave a detailed explanation of Shinto and how it has influenced Japanese people and Japanese culture. They seemed to understand the difference between temples and shrines for the first time, and were glad to hear that this would be very useful for their upcoming sightseeing in Kyoto. Finally, I saw them off at their hotel, and the tour came to an end.

    What Does a Private Kyoto Day Tour Cover? A Licensed Guide's Report on Kiyomizu-dera, Fushimi Inari, and Kinkaku-ji The guests were a group visiting from North America. It was their first time in Japan, and they came to Kyoto after sightseeing in Tokyo. I took the group to Kiyomizu-dera, Fushimi Inari Taisha, and Kinkaku-ji. In contrast to the heavy rain the day before, the tour took place on a perfect day for sightseeing. However, the JR railroad crossing just before Fushimi Inari did not open for a long time, seemingly due to some kind of accident, and there was heavy traffic congestion before the crossing. We got out of the car and waited for the crossing to open, but as a result we lost a significant amount of time, about 15 minutes. Fushimi Inari and Kinkaku-ji afterward were also more crowded than usual. Although it was crowded, all of the guests said they liked the magnificent Kinkaku-ji the best. I was worried about a major delay to the tour due to the trouble at the JR railroad crossing before Fushimi Inari, but we somehow managed to finish the tour right on time.

    Title: What's a 4-Hour Private Walking Tour of Tokyo Like? A Licensed Guide's Report on Tsukiji, Asakusa, and Meiji Shrine The guests were a group visiting from Europe. Until shortly before the tour, communication was only possible through a booking platform used by an intermediary travel agency, which made it difficult to coordinate. Eventually we were able to finalize the itinerary. Just before the tour, I was able to reach the guests directly via a messaging app, but I could not be certain whether the information I had sent to the agency earlier had actually reached them. This was their first visit to Japan. They planned to stay in Tokyo for a few days and then travel to Kyoto, Osaka, and Hiroshima. Since they had a guide only for today, the aim was to help them get used to using public transportation. They planned to visit the Imperial Palace Outer Garden the following day and Tokyo Skytree the day after, so I explained how to get to each. I gave them a Tokyo Travel Guide and explained other places as well. This time, since the booking came through a platform, the intermediary agency was completely invisible to me, but it appeared to be a small private company based in Europe. I was told that someone from the agency would visit Japan themselves in the autumn and seemed to have shared various pieces of information with today's guests. As it was a 4-hour tour, Tsukiji, Asakusa, and Meiji Shrine were about all we could manage. The guests had also hoped to see Omotesando and Cat Street, so after visiting Meiji Shrine, I used a map of the surrounding area that I had prepared and marked and explained the locations. I had considered walking them to the entrance of Cat Street, but since they wanted to have lunch on Takeshita Street (with me joining them), and we had already gone over time, we parted ways there. The guests were lovely and very understanding, but having an intermediary agency involved does make things more challenging.

    I had worked in the international business scene for over 40 years and traveled to North America and European countries over 1000 days.
    After I retired from the business, I traveled to most of the major sightseeing spots in all 47 prefectures in Japan.

    My guide is starting from a brief history of the site where I am going to guide. I usually add a briefing about Japanese culture based on religions, such as Shinto Shrine and Buddhist temples. A geographic background behind the history is also important.

    I am happy to introduce Japanese Manga/Anime cultures such as Akihabara, Nakano Broadway and Ghibli related sites.
    Travelling along the JR central line where guests can stopover at major animation studios (it is not accepted to visit the inside). The majority of animation studios such as TMS Entertainment, SUNRISE, A1 Pictures etc. are located in this area. Suginami Animation museum, Studio Ghibli and Ghibli Museum are also located.
    Guests can feel old houses in the Spirited Away scene in the Edo-Tokyo Open Air Architectural Museum.

    I can also provide a pilgrimage to the sacred place (shooting location) for the Shinkai Makoto animation movies such as Your name, Weathering with you, and Suzume.

    Another interesting feature is to visit authentic Japanese style pub meals such as Yakitori, Karaage, and Sushi etc.
    Asakusa Hoppy Street, Ameyoko Street, Yurakucho, Shimbashi, Shinjuku Golden gai, Shinjuku Omoide Yokocho are nice to visit.

    A Sake tasting at Sake Cellar can be an option.

    In addition to the above, I am available in the neighboring cities.

    Kawagoe is an old town developed in the 17th century. It has very close relationship with the Edo central government. Kawagoe castle ruins, Kitain temple and 500 Buddha statues will welcome the guests.
    These areas are renovated and provide an old days atmosphere.
    Japanese style sweets food stands will fascinate the guests.
    Kawagoe is about 1 – 1.5 train trip from Tokyo.

    Kamakura is the first Samurai worriers government established in the late 12th century.
    The Buddhism are introduced to Japan in the 6th century, and flourished at Nara and Kyoto later. A newer Buddhism sect such as Zen has well developed at Kamakura area.
    Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine, Gigantic Buddha statue at Kotokuin Temple and the flower temple Hasedera Temple are must-see.
    Kamakura is about 1 – 1.5 train trip from Tokyo.

    What's a Private Walking Tour of Kanazawa Like? A Licensed Guide's Report on Kenrokuen and City Buses The guests were visitors from Europe. After chatting about local topics from their hometown, we started the tour. They told me that the previous day they had walked 40 minutes from Kanazawa Station to the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art to visit it, which made me realize that figuring out how to use the buses in Kanazawa can be difficult at first unless English is your native language. They had also been hoping to see the illumination at Kenrokuen Garden, but unfortunately it was only being held on one Saturday in June. The tour itself was blessed with good weather, and the guests enjoyed it, including learning how to use the buses.

    What's a Rainy-Day Private Tokyo Tour Without Temples or Museums Like? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were a group visiting from North America. We exchanged many emails in advance, and they requested to see places other than temples, shrines, gardens, and museums. They also asked about vintage clothing shops and knife stores, so I researched and introduced several places. Unfortunately, it rained on the day of the tour. Since the meeting time was early, we took our time viewing the Nijubashi Bridge of the Imperial Palace, then walked toward the Kikyomon Gate. We entered the East Gardens right when the Otemon Gate opened at 9:00. Even in the rain, the irises were blooming in a variety of colors. The guests watched with curiosity the long-tailed carp swimming in the pond. They said that although they had seen many gardens in Kyoto, they were glad they came. We exited through the Hirakawamon Gate and traveled from Takebashi Station to Tsukiji. At Tsukiji Market, the guests carefully examined the knives they were after and purchased two. I also assisted with the tax-free procedure. At the food court, they seemed satisfied enjoying tekka-don and tempura soba. After the meal, we discussed where to go next. They had made a reservation for Shibuya Sky at 2:00, but they said they gave up on it because of the rain. I recommended Takeshita Street and Daikanyama, but they said they would go there the next day, so not today. Instead, they requested to visit Nezu, so we headed from Tsukiji to Nezu. Even in Nezu, we avoided the shrine and walked along the winding, narrow alleys behind the residential area. Along the way, we stopped at a shop specializing in tenugui hand towels and bought souvenirs. Then we took a break at Aoyama Coffee, known as the heart of the Yanaka-Nezu-Sendagi area. Although it was a small shop, it had a warm atmosphere, and the guests were delighted to interact with the shop owner and local residents. Unfortunately, many shops in Yanaka Ginza were closed on Tuesday. We traveled from Nippori to Kanda by JR and parted ways at Kanda Station. It was quite challenging to plan the course for a Tokyo walk in the rain, especially with the request to avoid shrines, temples, and museums. I tried to respond flexibly, but I wonder how it went. I would be very happy if it turned out to be a memorable day for them.

    What Is a Private Asakusa and Yanaka Food Walking Tour in Tokyo Like? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were visiting Japan for the first time from North America. After Asakusa, they wanted to go to Yanaka and enjoy a variety of small foods rather than sitting down at a restaurant. Unfortunately it was rainy, but they did not seem to mind the rain much and appeared to enjoy the tour. In Asakusa, they drew an omikuji fortune and bought ningyo-yaki, and in Yanaka they purchased wasabi-flavored olive oil at an olive shop, and enjoyed taiyaki and rice crackers in Nezu, saying they were delicious. We were also able to get into a coffee shop that is usually too crowded to enter, where they had a matcha latte and an egg sandwich, and one of the guests said it was the best matcha latte they had ever had. They also said Nezu Shrine was very beautiful. At Yanaka Ginza, they had a Yanaka croquette and said it was delicious. After that, they wanted to explore the Yanaka area on their own, so we parted ways at Yanaka Ginza. Even though it was rainy, they were wonderful guests who could enjoy anything.

    What Is a Private Walking Tour of Kyoto Like? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were visitors from North America who joined a private tour of Kyoto. The departure was slightly delayed due to one of the guests, but the tour proceeded smoothly afterward. The weather was very fine, warm enough to feel hot. The guests had a strong interest in Japanese culture and asked many questions throughout the tour. There were no problems with the tour itself. At Nishiki Market, they thoroughly enjoyed grilled eel (unagi kabayaki). They also asked for various pieces of advice for exploring Kyoto on their own the following day, and I was happy to offer suggestions using a map and other tools.

    What Is a Private Guided Tour of Koyasan Like? A Licensed Guide's Report Because the guests had visited before with family and I sensed they had a deep interest in Buddhism, I prepared especially carefully. They were very approachable, which put me at ease. We first visited Kongobuji Temple, then the Tokugawa Mausoleum. After that, we stopped by a small pond just out on the street. I explained that across from it was the site where the Fudodo Hall, now located in the Danjo Garan complex, once stood, and that because it had been here it was spared from lightning strikes, making it a valuable surviving structure. We went straight south along the mountain path to reach the Danjo Garan. We viewed the interior of the Konpon Daito Pagoda, and I explained the Buddhist statues, the bodhisattva images painted on the pillars, and the portraits of distinguished figures of the Shingon sect displayed at the upper corners of the four walls. Moving on to Kongo Sanmaiin, we saw the surviving Tahoto Pagoda donated by Hojo Masako, as well as the treasure hall. Finally, we visited the Mani Pagoda, where, as a bit of entertainment, they experienced "finding Buddha in hell" in a pitch-dark basement. Their temple lodging was very nearby, and since they wished to stroll a little more, we parted ways here.

    I grew up in the mountain village. I learned many things from my family, especially my grandmother. I can give you many interesting experiences in the wild nature. We eat wild strawberries or “Sukanpo ” the edible grass, fly ferns or cross a suspension bridge.
    I walked all of Kumano Kodo, Koyasan pilgrimage roads and other ancient highways, total length is more than 600km ( 400 miles).
    I want you to show the interesting spots beyond the guide book. Kii mountain range has old history as well as beautiful land scapes. I’ll take you the excellent places you can do Facebook bragging.
    My experiences for guiding foreigners are, town of Koyasan, pilgrimage road to Koyasan, Kumano Kodo Nakahechi, hot springs, Shingu city and Nachi Katsuura town, Kushimoto area, Shirahama area so on.

A Licensed Guide's Report Although it rained throughout the day, starting early in the morning when the rain was light meant we were not troubled by it. Apart from Kegon Falls, we took our time exploring the shrine and temple area of Nikko. The guest was one person visiting Japan, who came to Nikko alone. The guest had an interest in religion and was very pleased with the detailed explanations of the shrines and temples of Nikko. The guest listened attentively to explanations about the historical syncretism of Shinto and Buddhism, the Meiji-era edict separating Shinto and Buddhism, and how Mount Nikko was affected by it.
