    What Is a Private Kyoto Walking Tour Like on a Rainy Day? A Licensed Guide's Report With a heavy rain warning issued for the southern part of Kyoto, the tour began only after I explained that we might encounter rain heavy enough to make walking difficult at the start of the tour, and the guests agreed to proceed. We traveled while checking the rain cloud radar, and aside from very heavy rain that made walking impossible at the Imadegawa bus stop on the way to Ginkaku-ji, we experienced almost no rain and were able to visit all the planned destinations on schedule. Nanzen-ji Suirokaku (the aqueduct) was on the list, and along with Tenju-an, which the guests had requested, we also stopped by the aqueduct and walked alongside it up to Keage, though the guests did not seem to particularly recognize it. At Kiyomizu-dera, the weather had recovered and the guests enjoyed their visit.

    Title: What Can You See on a Private Kyoto Tour? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were a group visiting from the Middle East. They had traveled from Tokyo, and the tour began about 10 minutes late as they arrived at the Hotel only just before the start. With only 20 minutes remaining before the reception closing time at the first destination, Sanjusangendo, we hurried there and managed to make it in time. After that, I took them to Fushimi Inari Taisha, Yasaka Shrine, and Gion, where we said our goodbyes. Since they had not yet checked in at the Hotel by the scheduled start of the tour, I had nearly given up on visiting Sanjusangendo, but because I had informed them in advance that there would be little spare time after their arrival, we were able to make it just in time. This tour may have ended up feeling rather rushed.

    What Is a Private Guided Tour of Koyasan Like? A Licensed Guide's Report I guided a group of guests from Asia. Everyone was enthusiastic and had an open, flexible attitude toward experiencing a different culture. We started the tour 30 minutes early to allow time for lunch. The group had just arrived by taxi from Kyoto at Ekoin, so we first waited about 10 minutes to hear an explanation about the temple lodging. Since the bus schedule did not match, we walked to Senjuinbashi, making a few stops along the way and enjoying activities such as the "womb passage" (tainai-kuguri). As many of the guests were vegetarian, I asked a chef I know to prepare shojin (Buddhist vegetarian) bento boxes. After that, we ended up spending quite a bit of time shopping. The guests studied things in their own way, looking at memorial tablets, prayer beads, and goshuin stamp books. Even at the small souvenir shop at Kongobuji Temple, they checked their zodiac signs and guardian Buddhas and bought protective charms. They enjoyed the rock garden at Kongobuji, the various rooms, and the old, traditional Japanese features. Due to time constraints, we viewed the Garan complex briefly and then took the bus to Nakanohashi in Okunoin. Perhaps because they wanted to enjoy the stroll, or because they walked slowly, it took some time, but everyone loved the unique beauty of Okunoin, and on the way back we even heard the song of a Japanese bush warbler. I believe the guests enjoyed the charm of Koyasan, which is so different from the city.

    What's a Private One-Day Kyoto Tour Like in the Rain? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were visitors from North America, visiting Japan for the first time. Although they seemed to have researched Japan quite a lot beforehand, their original interest in Japan came from their love of Japanese manga. Both listened very attentively and asked many questions. Unfortunately the weather was poor. At the first stop, Nanzenji Temple, the rain was still light, but it became quite heavy around the bus stop for Ginkakuji, so at Ginkakuji we waited a little for the rain to ease before touring the grounds. The rain was strong enough that even with umbrellas our shoes were soaked through and our backs began to get wet. Even so, the guests followed along without a single complaint. Just as we were leaving Ginkakuji, the rain suddenly stopped. At the Kyoto Imperial Palace it was still drizzling lightly, but guiding became a little easier. For lunch we went to a tonkatsu restaurant, since one of the guests could not eat fish. Shrimp, octopus, and squid were fine to eat. Perhaps because of the rain, Fushimi Inari had only about a third of the usual number of visitors, which made it easy to take photos. We returned to Kyoto Station, where I explained how to get back to the hotel by subway, and the tour ended. The photo was taken at the Kyoto Imperial Palace.

    Title: What Can You See on a Private One-Day Tour of Tokyo's Main Sights? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were a group visiting Japan for the first time from Europe. They arrived at Haneda Airport last night via London and took a taxi to their hotel. This trip was part of a longer journey, and in Japan they planned to stay in Tokyo before visiting Nagano, Kamikochi, Hida-Takayama, Kyoto, Osaka, Nara, and Hiroshima. Their wish for today was: "We would like to see only the main spots of Tokyo." They also mentioned that they planned to attend a "sumo show" in the evening. Due to the influence of a typhoon/tropical depression, the tour took place under hot and humid weather with occasional heavy rain. From Higashi-Ginza Station, we first headed to Tsukiji. Although it was a closed market day, it was fairly crowded. We went to the outer market. I explained "the history of the fish market since the Edo period" and "the difference between Toyosu Market and the Tsukiji Outer Market." After that, we strolled slowly through the area. Some tuna sushi and grilled squid teriyaki were purchased and sampled in the shop. Strawberry mochi was also purchased to take away. There was a question: "Do all people in Tokyo come here to buy fish?" Next, we went to Asakusa. Despite the bad weather, it was as crowded as ever with large numbers of people. We started from the front of the Kaminarimon Gate. I explained "the history of Sensoji Temple and the transition from Edo to Tokyo," "what the five-story pagoda is for," "what Buddhism is," and "the difference between Buddhism and Shinto." We took commemorative photos in front of the Kaminarimon Gate and strolled slowly through the Nakamise shopping street. There were questions such as "What are Japan's main religions?", "How many Buddhists are there in Japan?", and "Besides Buddhism, what other religions do people believe in?" Since there was a wish to "buy anime goods as souvenirs," we went to the Akihabara electric town. I explained "the history of the electric town." A Pokemon figure was purchased. We moved to Hibiya for lunch. After looking around at Hibiya Chanter, we went to a Japanese restaurant, where udon and tonkatsu were chosen. We moved to Harajuku and visited Meiji Shrine. I explained "about Shinto," "about the torii gate," "about Emperor Meiji," and "why wine barrels are displayed there." There were questions such as "What kind of teaching is Shinto?", "When did Shinto originate?", and "How many shrines are there in Japan?" We also strolled along Takeshita Street. We went to Shibuya. We walked across the Scramble Crossing and took photos in front of the Hachiko statue. We also visited Tokyu Food Show. There were comments and questions such as "Tokyo felt like a clean and extremely safe city," "Why are there no trash bins in the streets?", and "I think the Tokyo subway is very well designed." I saw the guests off at Higashi-Ginza Station, and we parted ways.

A Licensed Guide's Report The meeting point Hotel for this tour has its lobby on the second floor, but guests sometimes go directly to the first-floor entrance, which occasionally causes us to miss each other. This time as well, when the guests did not appear in the lobby near the meeting time, I went down to the first floor to check, and as expected, the guests were near the entrance. The guests did not have a messaging app account, so it was difficult to contact them at the last minute, which made me a little nervous. The guests were visitors from North America. In line with the guests' wishes, I guided them mainly around spots on the eastern side of central Tokyo. It was helpful that travel between the locations did not take much time. On the other hand, we spent more time than expected at Ueno Park, so at Asakusa I limited the explanation to the area around Senso-ji Temple.     I was born in Tokyo and was raised in the suburbs of Tokyo called Tama area. When I was in university, I majored in western dramas, so I am good at playing like an actor.
    I like reading, listening to the music, and walking. I belong to several walking clubs, and sometimes I guide the members around Tokyo.
    One of my strengths as a guide is that I know well about kombu, Japanese kelps. In December every year, I work at a traditional kombu shop in Tsukiji Fish Market. At that shop, I learned a lot of things related to kombu or other ingredients for washoku. I can explain the different characteristics of them to you.

    What's a Private Rainy-Day Family Tour of Kyoto Like? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were a group visiting from Europe. When they came down to the front around 9:10, it was pouring rain outside. Since all of the originally planned sites were outdoor locations, I recommended visiting Sanjusangendo, which is mainly indoor, and we headed there. The group seemed deeply moved by the overwhelming statues of the Kannon Bodhisattva, and on behalf of the group they offered a single candle. While strolling through the hall, some of the guests bombarded me with questions about the objects held in the hands of the Thousand-Armed Kannon. By the time we left Sanjusangendo, the rain had eased to a light drizzle, so we set off toward Fushimi Inari Taisha. However, since the guests really wanted to have matcha, we stopped by a traditional confectionery shop. After arriving at Fushimi Inari, one of the guests became suddenly upset right after getting out of the car and began crying and fussing. The reason seemed to be a reluctance to use an umbrella, though since the group was speaking in their own language, I could not be entirely sure of the cause. After that, the mood alternated between good and bad, and we finished Fushimi Inari. At the Arashiyama bamboo grove, the mood turned cheerful. One of the guests held a stuffed panda toy up close to the bamboo, pretending to feed the bamboo to it, and enjoyed the moment. Afterward the guests said they wanted to have lunch, and since everyone had different preferences, I guided them to a family restaurant with a wide variety of menu options. At the Arashiyama Monkey Park, the guests were quite excited, and the moment of feeding the monkeys was the highlight. Afterward, I took the guests back to their hotel by hired car and we parted ways.

    What Is a Private Tokyo Tour of Asakusa, Shibuya, and Harajuku Like? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were a group visiting from North America. They listened to my suggestions, and I proposed Senso-ji Temple, Shibuya, and Harajuku. In Asakusa, since some of the guests were fond of washi paper, I guided them to a specialty shop, and the whole group was delighted. As they were a group who enjoyed shopping, we had a lively time hunting for cute items in Asakusa and Harajuku, and it was fun for me to join in as well. It was a humid day during the rainy season with rain coming and going, but we spent an enjoyable day together, staying hydrated and taking breaks along the way.

    What Is a Private Walking Tour of Morioka Like? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests enjoyed the natural scenery from Kaiunbashi Bridge in front of Morioka Station, looking out over the Kitakami River, the fifth longest river in Japan, and Mount Iwate, the highest peak in Iwate Prefecture. Walking along Teramachi-dori, selected as one of Japan's 100 Best Roads, they curiously looked at the flower shops and stone shops lining both sides. After being impressed by the majestic main gate of Hoonji Temple and taking photos, we entered the Rakando hall. In addition to the Rushana Buddha statue, I introduced the statues among the Five Hundred Rakan said to represent Marco Polo and Kublai Khan. It is also said that there is only one female statue among them, and one of the guests found it immediately, and I was amazed by their sharp powers of observation. I had visited many times before but had never been able to find it. The person running the shop said they were delighted that we had made the effort to visit. Next, we took a coffee break of about an hour at Kurambon, a coffee shop in Konyacho that was featured in the New York Times, and they liked the flavor so much that they also bought some beans. We strolled through the streets of Konyacho, which retain an Edo-period atmosphere, including Banya and Goza-Kyu Morikyu Shoten, and arrived at the former Iwate Bank Red Brick Building to take photos. Crossing Nakanohashi Bridge, we entered Morioka Castle Ruins Park, one of Japan's 100 Famous Castles, crossed the arched bridge that appeared in a photo in the New York Times, and visited the main enclosure ruins, the pedestal of the Nanbu lieutenant statue, the memorial statue of Inazo Nitobe, and the poem monument of Takuboku Ishikawa. Exiting from the third enclosure, we arrived at Sakurayama Shrine, which enshrines the lords of the Nanbu domain. They seemed overwhelmed by the triangular giant rock called Eboshi-iwa. After paying respects at the main shrine, I guided them through the Odori shopping street and we arrived at the Hotel, ending the guiding. The guests were all friendly and full of curiosity. They seemed to enjoy the walk through Morioka, a city rich in history and culture, and remarked that they especially liked the quietness that differed from large cities such as Tokyo.

The weather was unfortunately rainy at times, with heavy showers, so we paused to take shelter along the way. This meant we ran slightly over schedule, but we were able to visit all the planned spots. They were interested in Japanese culture and history, and they asked many questions about the emperor, the shogun, religion, and related topics. The travel agency had requested that I take them somewhere to enjoy delicious Japanese food for lunch, but the guests felt it would be a waste of time to spend it on a meal, so they simply had light snacks bought at a convenience store and we continued the tour. They were a very pleasant and friendly group.
