    What Is a Private Himeji Castle and Koko-en Garden Tour Like? A Licensed Guide's Report Today's guests were visitors from Oceania. The plan for today's tour was to visit Himeji Castle, Koko-en Garden, and a sake brewery. However, while the guide was on the train heading to Himeji Station, a message came from the guests asking, "Should we go to Engyo-ji Temple on Mount Shosha, the 'Last Samurai' temple? Can we change the sake brewery to Engyo-ji Temple?" Since the guests had arrived at Himeji Station earlier than expected, we discussed it, and after the guests understood that Engyo-ji Temple on Mount Shosha is quite far from Himeji Station, we decided to follow the original plan and visit Himeji Castle, Koko-en Garden, and the sake brewery. We started the tour after this exchange. As it was another hot day, we made our way through Himeji Castle and Koko-en Garden, giving explanations in the shade whenever possible. The next destination was the sake brewery. However, the guests said, "We won't go to the sake brewery. We're hungry, so we'd like to end the tour and have lunch." The guests had come to Himeji from Osaka today. They said they had stopped by Kobe Harborland on the way, but had not eaten lunch. Since today's tour was originally scheduled to start at 13:00, the guide had assumed it would be a tour starting after lunch. However, the guests had not eaten lunch and were tired from the heat, so they wanted to end the tour and have lunch. For this reason, I guided the guests to a Sanuki udon restaurant on Otemae Street and ended the tour. The guests were pleased.

They mentioned it may have been caused by something eaten the previous day, but in the end they rested at their accommodation and recovered, which was a relief. The tour continued with the rest of the group, and at Higashi Chaya District they enjoyed gold leaf soft serve ice cream and watching the gold leaf production process.     What Can You See on a Private One-Day Tour of Tokyo? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were visitors from North America who were in Japan for the first time. They had arrived at the Tokyo International Cruise Terminal this morning on a cruise tour and planned to return home shortly. At Meiji Shrine, the guests appeared impressed by the quiet and solemn atmosphere, which was very different from Shibuya. At the Imperial Palace, they listened with interest to historical explanations about the role of the Emperor, the Meiji Restoration, and the Edo Shogunate. At Sensoji Temple, they listened with interest to explanations about the differences between temples and shrines, as well as the Kaminarimon Gate, and they also purchased souvenirs along Nakamise Street. Since the group walked slowly and needed several rest breaks along the way, the tour took longer than originally planned. As I accommodated the guests' wishes, I believe they were satisfied.

    Can You Do a Private Kamakura and Enoshima Day Tour Before a Yokohama Event? A Licensed Guide's Report The Great Buddha and Hase Kannon were included as the guests requested. The guests wanted to attend a baseball event at Yokohama Stadium at 2:30 and also wished to visit Enoshima, so we discussed the timing and which places to visit. As a result, the day before, we had planned to make the shrine the third stop. However, on the day, after visiting the two temples, we suddenly changed the plan and decided to go to Enoshima instead. At Enoshima, the group climbed the Sea Candle, and even though it was cloudy, they could still look out over the Shonan coast, so the guests appeared very satisfied. After that, we left Enoshima in order to arrive at Yokohama Stadium in time.

    Title: What's a Private One-Day Tokyo Tour Like? A Licensed Guide's Report on Tokyo Tower, Meiji Shrine, and Shibuya The guests were a group visiting Japan for the first time from Europe, having arrived the previous day. After Tokyo, they planned to visit Kyoto, Osaka, and other destinations, staying in Japan for about two weeks in total. I guided them to Tokyo Tower, Meiji Shrine, Takeshita Street, and Shibuya. Since the itinerary included Tokyo Tower, the time spent walking outdoors was not very long, but as both the temperature and humidity were high, we made sure to take plenty of water breaks to prevent heatstroke. As some of the guests were interested in anime and manga, we had planned to visit the Pokémon Center and the Nintendo Store in Shibuya if time allowed, but the tour reached its scheduled end time after seeing the Scramble Crossing and the Hachiko statue. Therefore, I handed them a map of Shibuya and explained the locations of the Pokémon Center and the Nintendo Store, and I also explained how to get back to their hotel before we parted ways.

    Title: What's a Private Osaka Tour Like? A Licensed Guide's Report on Sumiyoshi Taisha and Osaka Castle The guests were a group visiting Japan for the first time from Europe. We first visited Sumiyoshi Taisha and discussed Japanese history, including the differences between Shinto and Buddhism, as well as the relationship between the Imperial family, Shinto, and mythology. I talked about the history of Sumiyoshi Taisha, which was founded 1,800 years ago, and its blessings, and the guests worshipped respectfully in front of each shrine. They took many photos of the sacred trees and the large stone lanterns. Everyone searched for the "Godairiki" power stones together, and they were delighted to find them. In Tennoji, they were deeply moved to see the "bone Buddha" at Isshin-ji Temple. They also got a sense of the battle at Sonmudo, which houses materials related to the Summer Siege of Osaka, before we moved on to Osaka Castle. At Osaka Castle, they were impressed by the outer defensive structure surrounded by the outer moat and by the main tower.

    Title: What's a Private Food-Focused Tokyo Tour Like? A Licensed Guide's Report on Tsukiji and Kappabashi The guests are great lovers of Japanese culture, and this was their third visit to Japan, following an earlier trip at the end of last year. Tokyo was the final stop on this trip, after visiting the Kansai region and Kanazawa. They had already been to the major tourist spots on previous visits, and since they are deeply involved with food professionally, this time they chose a tour focused specifically on cuisine. They had already visited Toyosu Market, but they seemed to really enjoy the unique atmosphere of Tsukiji Market. At Namiyoke Shrine and Higashi Honganji Temple, I explained the differences between Buddhism and Shinto and the influence each has had on Japanese culture, and the guests were very pleased to gain new knowledge they had not known before. Already quite knowledgeable about Japanese food, at Kappabashi they purchased kitchen knives, glass tableware, tanuki figurines, soba baskets, and more. They also wanted to take home the base for making "dashi," so they even bought kombu and bonito flakes. Finally, they wanted to see the food section of an ordinary Japanese supermarket, so I took them to a nearby store. Since they wished to continue shopping at Kappabashi, we ended the tour at that point.

    Title: What Does a Full-Day Private Walking Tour of Tokyo Look Like? A Licensed Guide's Report on Meiji Shrine, Shibuya, Tsukiji, Yanaka, and Asakusa The guests were a group visiting from North America. In their advance messages, they requested to see the essential sightseeing spots of Tokyo and to receive the information needed for using public transportation. I had initially suggested Harajuku, but since they were not interested in shopping, I proposed a revised itinerary that included a visit to Yanaka, which the guests agreed to, and we began the tour. They had originally come from South America and had relocated to their current home some years ago. Some of the guests enjoyed soccer as a hobby, and one of them was studying Japanese using a smartphone app. The guests had arrived at their hotel around 6:00 the previous evening. They did not seem tired, but they appeared to be sensitive to the humidity. While guiding them to each location, I encouraged them to drink water frequently as a precaution against heatstroke. At Meiji Shrine and Asakusa, they listened attentively to explanations of history, religion, and culture, even in the sweltering heat. In Shibuya, they took photos at the crossing and the Hachiko statue. At Tsukiji (which was surprisingly uncrowded), they enjoyed satsuma-age, A5-rank wagyu and Kobe beef, and fresh juices such as orange and cassis. During the Yanaka portion, the temperature and humidity were extremely high, so we rested in the courtyard of a gelato shop tucked away in a narrow lane of a residential area while enjoying gelato. While moving between locations, I shared information via a messaging app about the Shinkansen, areas near Tokyo (around Mount Fuji and Nikko), recommendations for Kyoto, Osaka, and Hiroshima, and recommended spots in Tokyo that we would not be visiting on today's tour. At Asakusa, our final stop, one of the guests wanted daifuku mochi on Nakamise Street. After visiting the main hall, we had about 15 minutes to spare, so I recommended some other streets, but they said they would head straight back to the hotel. I explained the simplest route, but since I was concerned about whether they could make the transfer between the train line and the subway line smoothly, I took them to platform 1 inside the subway station and accurately shared the station and exit nearest their hotel via the messaging app before we parted ways with smiles.

    What Is a Private Day Tour of Hakone Like? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were a cheerful and lively group who seemed to want to relax and enjoy nature after four busy days in the bustle of Tokyo. Since the bus to Owakudani was delayed and waiting would have wasted time, we quickly changed plans and visited the Hakone Open-Air Museum first. There we happened to come across a group of elementary school children and exchanged some enjoyable words with them. The guests also tried a foot bath and enjoyed ice cream at a café. They were greatly impressed by the yosegi marquetry at Maruyama and made several purchases (such as a puzzle box requiring 21 moves). They also enjoyed lunch with soba and sushi. On the pirate ship they stayed on deck the whole time to take in the scenery, and at Owakudani they fully appreciated the natural beauty created by the volcano. From Owakudani we returned by the Izuhakone bus, which reached the Hotel in about 10 minutes, and we ended the tour by taking a photo of the evening scenery, including me, inside the bus.

    Title: What's a One-Day Private Tour of Tokyo Like for First-Time Visitors? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were a group visiting from North America. They had arrived the previous night, and today was their only day with a guide in Tokyo, so a major goal was to help them get comfortable using public transportation. Since we started at 8:00 and Shinjuku Gyoen had not opened yet, we began in Shibuya. In Shibuya I pointed out places such as Parco and 109, and they mentioned they might come back later. They would be staying in Tokyo before continuing to Kyoto. The only fixed plans in Tokyo were TeamLab Planets and the Ghibli Museum, with everything else still to be decided, so I handed them a Tokyo Travel Guide and explained some candidate destinations. Since one of the guests was fond of anime, they seemed likely to join a hands-on experience course in Kyoto as well. We had some time to spare, so the plan was to let them enjoy a free lunch in Asakusa, then guide them through Akihabara on the way back before parting. However, after lunch they were worn out by the heat and wanted to return to the Hotel early, so I saw them off and we parted ways. They said they would visit places like Akihabara on another day.     I had worked in the international business scene for over 40 years and traveled to North America and European countries over 1000 days.
    After I retired from the business, I traveled to most of the major sightseeing spots in all 47 prefectures in Japan.

    My guide is starting from a brief history of the site where I am going to guide. I usually add a briefing about Japanese culture based on religions, such as Shinto Shrine and Buddhist temples. A geographic background behind the history is also important.

    I am happy to introduce Japanese Manga/Anime cultures such as Akihabara, Nakano Broadway and Ghibli related sites.
    Travelling along the JR central line where guests can stopover at major animation studios (it is not accepted to visit the inside). The majority of animation studios such as TMS Entertainment, SUNRISE, A1 Pictures etc. are located in this area. Suginami Animation museum, Studio Ghibli and Ghibli Museum are also located.
    Guests can feel old houses in the Spirited Away scene in the Edo-Tokyo Open Air Architectural Museum.

    I can also provide a pilgrimage to the sacred place (shooting location) for the Shinkai Makoto animation movies such as Your name, Weathering with you, and Suzume.

    Another interesting feature is to visit authentic Japanese style pub meals such as Yakitori, Karaage, and Sushi etc.
    Asakusa Hoppy Street, Ameyoko Street, Yurakucho, Shimbashi, Shinjuku Golden gai, Shinjuku Omoide Yokocho are nice to visit.

    A Sake tasting at Sake Cellar can be an option.

    In addition to the above, I am available in the neighboring cities.

    Kawagoe is an old town developed in the 17th century. It has very close relationship with the Edo central government. Kawagoe castle ruins, Kitain temple and 500 Buddha statues will welcome the guests.
    These areas are renovated and provide an old days atmosphere.
    Japanese style sweets food stands will fascinate the guests.
    Kawagoe is about 1 – 1.5 train trip from Tokyo.

    Kamakura is the first Samurai worriers government established in the late 12th century.
    The Buddhism are introduced to Japan in the 6th century, and flourished at Nara and Kyoto later. A newer Buddhism sect such as Zen has well developed at Kamakura area.
    Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine, Gigantic Buddha statue at Kotokuin Temple and the flower temple Hasedera Temple are must-see.
    Kamakura is about 1 – 1.5 train trip from Tokyo.
