Title: What's a Private Tokyo Tour Like at Tokyo National Museum and Hamarikyu Gardens? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were visitors from North America. Some of the guests joined the group in Tokyo. It was only just before their arrival in Japan that the travel agency finally provided the guests' contact details, and although I reached out, we could not connect before their departure, so we decided to meet at the hotel and discuss the itinerary together. After presenting several options, we settled on the plan described above. Since it was hot again today, I did steer them toward a course that included the Tokyo National Museum. The guests listened attentively to my explanations, including my jokes, and responded warmly, reacting with great enthusiasm. At the Tokyo National Museum, I had to gently remind them to keep quiet a few times. At Shimbashi Station, I helped support the purchase of Shinkansen tickets between Tokyo and Kyoto/Shin-Osaka. Hamarikyu Gardens was practically empty and all to ourselves. Fish were leaping from the surface of the pond, and herons, egrets, and cormorants were flying about, making it feel like a natural paradise within the city. The guests were delighted, saying it was a garden unlike anything back home.

Hello! My name is Hideki Maruyama. I was born in Osaka and raised in the Greater Tokyo area. I obtained my National Government Licensed Guide Interpreter Certificate in February 2016.
I spent 23 years working at a leading Japanese automotive company, including 7 years posted overseas. I then worked for a German premium automotive manufacturer for 13 years, followed by 6 years as an advisor to a British energy company. Through these roles at global corporations, I developed and refined key skills such as:
    1. Cross-cultural communication
    2. A deep understanding of business elites and affluent customers
    3. The ability to deliver impactful and impressive presentations in English
In addition to my regular duties, I often served as an interpreter for top executives during meetings with foreign government officials. I also had opportunities to introduce aspects of Japan—such as our national character and consumer preferences—to leadership teams in both the German and British companies.
As a tour guide, I’ve had the pleasure of guiding guests from a wide range of countries especially after the pandemic, including the US, UK, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, the Netherlands, Belgium, Switzerland, Austria, Norway, Romania, Slovenia, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, India, Hong Kong, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Brazil, Argentina, Columbia, Thailand, Malaysia, the Philippines, Laos, Turkey, Jordan, Kenya and Israel.
When guiding, I always keep in mind to go beyond what guests can find on social media or ChatGPT. I believe my professional background allows me to offer unique insights, and I am encouraged when guests mention this in their reviews

Title: What's a Private Kyoto Walking Tour Like? A Licensed Guide's Report on Fushimi Inari, a Hidden Bamboo Path, and Nishiki Market This was a private tour for a group visiting Kyoto from North America. The guests requested a lesser-known bamboo grove path located behind Fushimi Inari Taisha, a spot I had not visited myself, so I did a preliminary site visit two days beforehand. It turned out to be a very pleasant little path with a wonderful atmosphere. It was a very hot day, and along with the high temperature the humidity was also intense, so everyone seemed quite tired, but the occasional breeze that blew through felt refreshing. The guests were delighted by Tatsumi Shrine, the Shirakawa area, and Higashiyama and Nanzen-ji Temple, and they also seemed to enjoy Nishiki Market.

    Tour Itinerary

    • 09:30 Meet at Tobu Nikko Station
    • 09:45~10:30 Move by bus from Tobu Nikko Station to Chuzenji Onsen
    • 10:40~11:25 Visit Kegon Falls

    • 12:10~12:40 Move by bus from Chuzenji Onsen to Shinkyo Bridge
    • 12:40~12:55 Visit Shinkyo Bridge
    • 13:05~13:10 Visit the statue of Shodo Shonin
    • 13:20~14:50 Visit Nikko Toshogu Shrine
    • 15:05 Catch a taxi near Toshogu Shrine, get the guests aboard, and finish
    • *At 15:00 there were still 30 minutes left so I suggested Rinnoji Temple, but since the guests seemed tired and there was heavy thunderstorm, we disbanded a little early with the guests' consent.

What Is a 6-Hour Private Nikko Tour Like? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were a very friendly and gentle group who seemed to genuinely enjoy their trip. At historical structures such as Toshogu Shrine, I provided somewhat detailed explanations, and the guests also showed interest in the Japanese aesthetic sense of "wabi and sabi," so it seemed they enjoyed not only Nikko but also Japanese culture in general. At first, I thought six hours might be a little short for a Nikko tour, but since this was a group of guests with a range of backgrounds, I felt it turned out to be just the right amount of time.

I am a licensed guide based in the Nikko area of Tochigi Prefecture, with a passion for sharing the depth and beauty of this remarkable region.
In particular, I take great pride in introducing the magnificent World Heritage area, home to Toshogu Shrine, Futarasan Shrine, Rinnoji Temple, and the iconic Shinkyo Bridge. The rich history, spiritual atmosphere, and masterful craftsmanship found there are truly inspiring.
But Nikko has much more to offer beyond the World Heritage zone. The region is uniquely spread across three different elevation zones: the central town area, the Lake Chuzenji area at higher altitude, and the remote Yumoto Onsen area in the mountains. Each of these areas offers a different charm—from historic sites and sacred spaces to scenic lakes, waterfalls, and hot springs.
However, due to the area’s wide geography, limited public transit options, and seasonal congestion, even navigating efficiently within a single area can be challenging without local knowledge.
That’s why local expertise is essential. With in-depth knowledge of Nikko’s layout, transportation network, and crowd patterns, I help my guests make the most of their time, while focusing on the area that suits their interests best.
I don’t just recite what’s written in guidebooks—I offer deeper insights rooted in Japanese history, religion, and culture. From the legacy of Tokugawa Ieyasu to the spiritual symbolism behind shrine architecture, I aim to provide meaningful and memorable experiences.
If you’re looking to discover the real Nikko, from its iconic landmarks to hidden gems, I’d be honored to guide you.

What Is a Private Nara Walking Tour Like in Summer? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were visitors from North America. Despite the temperature reaching 35°C, as expected neither of them wore a hat. Usually I add a note to my message the day before saying, "Please be sure to bring a hat. Sunscreen does not prevent heatstroke," but this time I forgot. Because of that, it was very helpful that I always keep two spare hats in my backpack. They had wonderful energy, and they really walked a great deal in the intense summer heat. They also seemed to genuinely enjoy the former residence of the photographer Taikichi Irie, a place I had felt was somewhat difficult to include in a course. I am beginning to think it might be good to make it one of my standard highlights from now on.

Hello! Thank you for choosing Nara! I bet you’ll love Nara. I specialize in Nara because Nara is the unique place where in one day you can cover the history and religions of Japan from the ancient times to the post war era while enjoying rambling in the UNESCO World Heritage park, having communication with lovely deer, surrounded with the beautiful nature.
I grew up in Nara, went university in Kyoto, enjoyed teaching at high schools and a university in Osaka. The three former capitals of Japan are home to me.
After retiring from teaching I began guiding so that I can meet various people from various corners of the world with a variety of cultures and backgrounds. Each time I guide, I find it hugely rewarding because I learn a lot from my guests sharing the history, culture and all that I know about Nara, Kyoto and Osaka.
I used to be a marathon runner, mountain climber and skier though I am not much of them anymore.
What I especially recommend is to stay in Nara a couple of days and enjoy communicating with friendly deer while visiting UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Nara in early morning, temples and shrines at night are well worth experiencing.

What's a Private Osaka Day Tour Like? A Licensed Guide's Report on Osaka Castle, Kuromon Market, and Dotonbori Today I guided a group visiting from North America who had already been to Tokyo and Kyoto, and they were surprised by the intense heat and high humidity. We first went to Osaka Castle, and because of the extreme heat, it was great that we could move comfortably by using an electric cart. Thanks to the heat, Osaka Castle itself was not very crowded and it was pleasant. After that, we moved on to Kuromon Market and Dotonbori. The guests were amazed by the huge crowds at Dotonbori and Shinsaibashi shopping street, but the lively atmosphere actually felt enjoyable to them, and they were delighted. I believe they had a great time.

What Is a Private Family-Friendly Day Tour of Kyoto Like? A Licensed Guide's Report on Iwatayama Monkey Park and Nijo Castle The guests were a group visiting from North America. I took them to Iwatayama Monkey Park and Nijo Castle. The Monkey Park was chosen as a destination suited to the younger members of the group, while Nijo Castle was selected as a place the rest of the group would enjoy. I had wondered whether the Monkey Park, which involves a 160-meter climb with many stairs, would be manageable, but the group climbed the mountain smoothly and energetically, even more so than adults, which put me at ease. I heard there is an even higher mountain near their home that they often go to climb. The group enjoyed the Monkey Park. After that, I took them to Nijo Castle. (I think Nijo Castle was a little boring for some of the guests.) Since the group included younger members, I had planned a very relaxed schedule with plenty of leeway. However, unexpected snack breaks and rest stops were needed along the way, so in the end the tour finished right on time.

Title: What Is a Private One-Day Osaka Tour Like? A Licensed Guide's Report on Osaka Castle and Kuromon Market The guests were a close-knit group. It was hot that day, but everyone was in good spirits. The group was full of energy, and one of the guests in particular was very entertaining — posing for photos with ninja figures and walking around to explore more than anyone else, showing great curiosity and a strong desire to make the most of the trip. At Osaka Castle, even though it was hot, everyone chose to walk through the castle grounds rather than use the electric cars. To help prevent heatstroke, I let the group know that the convenience store inside the castle sold frozen drinks and that there was a spot on the fourth floor offering free drinking water. We had planned to visit Dotonbori, but since the guests seemed to have walked around there on their own the previous day, we went to Kuromon Market instead. The group was happy to try anything, and enjoyed eating raw oysters. Among the various shops we looked at, the guests took a liking to the sushi at a particular shop in the market. Since it was just about the end of the tour, they decided to have their meal there, and we parted ways.

Hi! I’m an official English guide in Wakayama prefecture. I’m also a national guide as well. I’d like to expand my guide area to help tourists.
The town of Osaka offers a different atmosphere than Tokyo. I like both exciting Osaka and nature-filled Wakayama Prefecture.
If you stay in Osaka for 3 days, you can go to Koyasan for one day, or even for a day trip, so I recommend sightseeing at Koyasan.
If you are tired of the hustle and bustle of the big city, the nature of Koyasan will relax you.
I will introduce you to the unique culture, history and must-see sights.

    Tour Itinerary

    • 5:00 Meet at Hotel
    • 5:25 Toyosu Market
    • 6:50 Tsukiji Market
    • 8:00 Dismissal

Title: What Is a Private Toyosu and Tsukiji Market Tour in Tokyo Like? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were a group visiting from North America. They were very friendly, polite, and wonderful to be with. On a trip to Japan, they were very much looking forward to Disneyland and Universal Studios Japan. At Toyosu Market, the guests were impressed by the speed of the tuna auction conducted without IT, and seemed to feel a real sense of Japanese tradition. At Tsukiji, they enjoyed a small portion of eel, tuna nigiri, and a seafood rice bowl, and appeared very satisfied. They thanked me warmly, saying they had a wonderful time, and they listened very attentively to my explanations. It was a pleasure to spend the day with such a wonderful group.

    My name is Kris,
Before becoming a tour guide, I worked for a major steelmaking company as an engineer for many years. During my career, I lived and worked in both Germany and the United States for a total of five years. These experiences helped me understand different cultures and ways of thinking, which now helps me connect easily with guests from around the world.

After retirement, I chose a second career as a tour guide because I truly enjoy meeting people from different countries and sharing Japanese culture, history, and daily life. I have been working as a guide for more than nine years and continue to enjoy every tour.

I currently live in Tokyo, but I was born and raised in Kobe, near Osaka, and my family roots are in Kyoto. As a result, I have extensive knowledge not only of Tokyo but also of Kyoto, Osaka, and many other parts of Japan. I enjoy introducing both famous landmarks and hidden local gems that many visitors might otherwise miss.

I am energetic, friendly, and very sociable. I always try to create tours that are relaxed, flexible, and tailored to my guests’ interests.

Travel is one of my greatest passions, especially visiting hot spring resorts. I have visited more than 80 onsen destinations throughout Japan, giving me a deep appreciation of Japanese culture and regional traditions.

Whether you are visiting Japan for the first time or returning for another adventure, I would be delighted to help you discover the real Japan from a local perspective.

I look forward to meeting you and helping you create wonderful memories in Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, and beyond.

    See you in Japan!

    Kris

Okayama in Half a Day: Korakuen Garden & Okayama Castle

    Tour Itinerary

    • 9:30 Meet at Okayama Station
    • 10:00 Korakuen Garden
    • 12:00 Okayama Castle
    • 13:30 Restaurant Ujo Cafe, disband

What Is a Private Tour of Okayama Castle and Korakuen Garden Like? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were interested in Japanese history, and they listened enthusiastically not only to stories about Okayama but also to accounts of the Sengoku period, the Edo period, and the Meiji Restoration. It was their first time visiting a Japanese castle, and they seemed very pleased. Some of the guests were very fond of the garden, and we rested and chatted for quite a while at Ryuten. They also went inside the castle and looked very attentively at the armor, calligraphy, folding screens, and Japanese swords. They asked various questions, such as the role of the castle and why the garden was created. Overall, although it was hot, they appeared to have a wonderful time.
