Title: Can You Visit Kiyomizu-dera, Fushimi Inari, and Nijo Castle in a 4-Hour Private Kyoto Tour? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were a group visiting from North America, and it was their first time in Japan and in Kyoto. Even though it was a short 4-hour tour, we managed to visit Kiyomizu-dera, Fushimi Inari Taisha, and Nijo Castle. Before the tour, I had explained that the schedule would be tight given the limited time. At the start of the tour, I also suggested the option of removing Fushimi Inari, but since the guests agreed once again to an early-paced walk, we decided to proceed with the original plan. Because we walked quite quickly, it seemed a little demanding for one of the guests. I had also received a request for a tour the following day, but unfortunately another tour was already scheduled, so I had to decline. The weather was cloudy and not too hot, which allowed us to proceed with the tour comfortably.

What's a Private Cruise Day Tour of Kyoto Like? A Licensed Guide's Report on Sanjusangendo, Gion, and Nijo Castle The guests were a group of cruise ship passengers from Oceania. We had arranged to meet at the Hachijo Exit of the Shinkansen at Kyoto Station, but they were waiting at the Hachijo East Exit, so we missed each other for about 10 minutes and started a little late (I should have specified the Hachijo West Exit). At Sanjusangendo we moved at a relatively relaxed pace, so we spent a little extra time there, while at Gion we kept it shorter, walking along Hanamikoji from east to west and having the driver pick us up near Ichiriki. I then took them to Nishiki Market, where they had about an hour to enjoy lunch, and afterward we met up and headed to Nijo Castle. Since we had gradually run a little over on time, I had planned to make an adjustment at the Kyoto Imperial Palace, but I carelessly failed to notice that it was closed on the second Tuesday and we were unable to enter. I apologized for my oversight as the guide, and since the guests were also feeling tired, we instead went for a drive around Heian Shrine, Chion-in, and Gion Shirakawa, arriving at Kyoto Station 20 minutes early. They were going to catch a Shinkansen departing Osaka Station at 16:14, so I was relieved that we made it back in time, and I concluded the tour with an apology for not being able to guide them through the Kyoto Imperial Palace.

What Is a Private Hakone Day Tour Like in the Rainy Season? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were a very cheerful group from North America, and laughter never stopped throughout the day. It was the final day of their two-week trip to Japan, and despite the rainy-season skies and deep fog, they set off in high spirits. At the Hakone Open-Air Museum, they enjoyed a magical atmosphere in the mist. At a marquetry shop, they thoroughly enjoyed the presentation of yosegi woodwork, bought many souvenirs, and thanked me for introducing such a wonderful place. At a rice-bowl restaurant, they enjoyed my talk about kanji while finishing all of their Japanese meal. From the pirate ship, they took in the deep green of Hakone's nature, and at Owakudani they experienced the scenery veiled in fog.

Title: What Is a Private Kagoshima Tour with a Local Guide Like? A Guide's Report The guests were seasoned senior travelers touring various parts of Japan, and they were great fans of Japanese culture and cuisine, happily enjoying purple sweet potato tart, mikan candy, jambo mochi, and matcha soft serve. For the sake of time efficiency, we had lunch during the ferry waiting time, choosing a grilled fish bento from the kiosk, and the guests said it was delicious and finished it completely. That very morning, Sakurajima erupted and there was a large amount of falling ash, which surprised them greatly, and they took photos of cars covered in ash. They also watched the video at the Satsuma Kiriko glass workshop and the visitor center with great interest.

Title: What's a Private One-Day Kyoto Tour Like? A Licensed Guide's Report on Fushimi Inari, Kinkaku-ji, and Arashiyama The guests were a group visiting from North America. They arranged their schedules to travel to Japan together, coming through Osaka, Kyoto, and Tokyo. In Tokyo they had some free time to consider how to spend the day. From my experience, relatively few guests clap their hands and press their palms together in prayer at Fushimi Inari, but this group did so with great care and sincerity. When I asked why, they said that respecting the customs of the places you visit is important, which I found deeply moving. Afterward we went from Kinkaku-ji to Arashiyama, visiting Tenryu-ji Temple and the Bamboo Grove Path. The guests loved flowers and plants, and they were very fond of the hydrangeas at Tenryu-ji.

    Miyagi in Half a Day: @ Fukuura Island & @ Tenrin-in

    Tour Itinerary

    • 9:00 Meet at Hotel Metropolitan Sendai East
    • 9:02 – 9:26 Travel to Matsushima Station (Tohoku Main Line)
    • 9:50 @ Fukuura Island
    • 10:50 @ Zuiganji Temple Approach Cave Group
    • 11:30 @ Tenrin-in
    • 12:12 – 12:50 Travel to Sendai Station (Senseki Line)
    • 13:00 Dismiss in front of the hotel entrance

What Is a 4-Hour Private Matsushima Tour Like? A Licensed Guide's Report on Fukuura Island and Zuiganji The guests were returning to Matsushima after having visited about twenty years earlier, this time bringing others in the group along to show them the area. On their previous visit, they had walked around the town of Matsushima and seen the cave complex at Zuiganji Temple. I told them, "Things have changed quite a bit compared to back then." They also seemed interested in how things had changed after the earthquake. Their request was a 4-hour tour visiting the cave complex and Fukuura Island. They also asked how best to use any spare time. Since a 9:00 meeting time would leave about 30 minutes before the next train, I suggested, "If we meet a little earlier and catch the 9:02 train, we can make more effective use of our time." Matsushima Station on the Tohoku Main Line is away from the center of Matsushima, but considering that we were going to Fukuura Island, the walking time is not that different from walking from Matsushimakaigan Station on the Senseki Line. The rain I had been worried about had mostly stopped, which was fortunate. Because we arrived from the opposite direction of the usual access route, the group was pleased to be able to photograph the enchanting Fukuura Bridge and the misty mountains. Since a full circuit of Fukuura Island takes about an hour, I suggested we take the short course. Some of the group pushed ahead eagerly, while others in the group seemed a bit tired and said they would wait at the observation deck rather than go all the way to the Benten hall on Fukuura Island. When I showed a photo of the Zuiganji approach path before the earthquake, they recalled, "Ah, that's how it used to be." Everyone is surprised when they see how it looks now. As we walked slowly along the approach path, they asked many questions about things like the relics inside the caves. At the rest area next to Entsuin, some of the group bought and ate ice cream for a short break. When asked what to do if there was spare time, I had suggested something like a sasa-kamaboko grilling experience first, but since time was tight, we instead visited the neighboring Tenrin-in grounds to see the small shrine filled with dedicated toys, and then headed back to Matsushimakaigan Station. Since this was a 4-hour visit to Matsushima, including Fukuura Island in the itinerary makes the timing tight, but if the guests agree, walking from Matsushima Station is a good option. Had the guests been reluctant to walk, the plan also allowed for taking a taxi to near Fukuura Bridge. In the end we were able to walk there, which worked out well.

    # What's a Private Day Trip from Tokyo to Kyoto Like by Bullet Train? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were a group visiting from North America. It was their first time in Japan, and they traveled to Kagoshima, Nagasaki, Hiroshima, Shimizu, and Tokyo, with just one day set aside for a day trip from Tokyo to Kyoto by bullet train. They planned to make a quick round trip back to Tokyo in the evening and return home the following day. They mentioned that every June they set off to travel all over the world. Since the destinations had not been decided in advance by email, we decided on them after meeting on the day. As they wanted to learn about Kyoto and the history of Japan, I explained the basics of Japanese history at Kinkaku-ji Temple and Nijo Castle. They also really wanted to see Gion, so I talked about geiko and maiko, and the daily life and history of Gion. There was a small incident today. While walking along Sannenzaka, one of the guests said they wanted to try matcha, so although there were only teahouses in the area, I offered to show them the basics, and we entered a teahouse partway along Sannenzaka. However, incense was being burned in the shop, and the smoke suddenly triggered a health issue. We left the shop right away, and things were fine after using the medication they carried with them, but from there it was clearly difficult, so we walked down Ninenzaka and strolled around Yasaka Shrine and Gion Shirakawa. Although some time still remained, there was not enough energy to continue to the next spot, so we returned to JR Kyoto Station and parted ways. I believe it was on the bullet train back to Tokyo that they kindly wrote a review right away. I was grateful, especially given how tired they must have been.

Hello, this is Kazu Akiyama, your tour guide. Nice to meet you and welcome to Japan. Thank you for joining me on the tour. Now I am a retired salaried worker, living in Osaka. I have been very much interested in not only learning Japanese history, culture, religion myself, but also talking about them (sometimes going off topics) in English with tourists from all over the world as well. I am so excited being with you as your guide on coming day! I am very much looking forward to you enjoying with me visiting the must-see places and some of the hidden gems. See you soon. Thank you – Kazu Akiyama

What's a Full-Day Private Tokyo Tour Like for First-Time Visitors? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were visitors from Africa. Before coming to Tokyo, some of the guests had attended a conference in Kyoto, after which they traveled to Japan. Following the conference in Kyoto, they arrived in Tokyo the day before and were scheduled to return home the following day, so this was both their first and last day in Tokyo. Since the itinerary had been finalized in advance through email correspondence, the tour proceeded smoothly. As they mentioned they did not need lunch, there were no breaks, which made the day a little demanding for me, but the guests remained energetic and enjoyed each sightseeing spot without showing any signs of fatigue. They were delighted when I gave them a pair of chopsticks as a souvenir and bought them some Yukimi Daifuku. Overall, I believe they were very satisfied.

What's a Full-Day Private Walking Tour of Tokyo Like? A Licensed Guide's Report on Tsukiji, Asakusa, Meiji Shrine, and Shibuya The guests were visitors from North America. Although it rained from the morning, we traveled by subway to Tsukiji, and after visiting Hongwanji Temple, we walked through the various specialty shops of the outer market while I explained about the ingredients and Japanese food. Next, we took the subway to Kiyosumi Garden, where the guests enjoyed strolling away from the bustle of Tsukiji, walking across the stepping stones. We then moved by subway to Kuramae and walked along the Sumida River Terrace while enjoying the view of the Skytree from Umaya Bridge. In Asakusa, we first had lunch at a ramen shop. After the meal, I gave a brief explanation of the history of Asakusa, and then we proceeded from Kaminarimon through Nakamise, shopping and taking photos here and there, before praying at the main hall. Next, while traveling by subway, I explained about Meiji Shrine and Japanese events. At Meiji Shrine, we walked along the approach path while I provided explanations at various points, and then entered the inner garden. In the garden, the guests admired the iris flowers in full bloom and took many photos. After praying at the main hall, they were amazed by the wide variety of shops on Takeshita Street, including animal cafes. Finally, we moved to the area in front of Shibuya Station, took photos in front of the Hachiko statue and at the scramble crossing, and concluded the tour. It was a difficult day for walking as it rained on and off throughout the day, but we were able to visit all of the planned destinations.

What Is a Private Family Day Tour of Tokyo Like? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were a group visiting from North America, and it was their first time in Tokyo. As reported earlier, there was a 30-minute delay, so we departed at 9:30. Some of the guests enjoyed exploring Tsukiji Market, though they mentioned they could not eat sashimi. When I explained the historical background of Tsukiji Hongwanji Temple, one of the guests was delighted and took many photos. Meiji Shrine involved quite a lot of walking, but the guests were very impressed. Some of the guests were interested in anime, so we parted ways at Takeshita Street as they planned to stop by an anime shop in Harajuku.

I am certified as a Top Guide by the JGA.
Drawing on my past experience as a guide, where I have consistently received positive feedback from guests, I will focus on the following key points in my guiding:
Explain the historical transition from Edo to Tokyo through engaging episodes and stories.
Offer a cross-cultural perspective on why concepts such as honji suijaku (the idea of local deities being manifestations of Buddhist figures), as seen at places like Meiji Shrine, represent a worldview that Japan can be proud of.
Provide warm and humorous interaction, incorporating the spirit of hospitality I learned while studying at Columbia University in the United States.
Use my experience working at the Tokyo Metropolitan Government to explain Tokyo’s present-day situation with the support of statistical data.
