    What Is a Half-Day Private Kyoto History and Local Life Walking Tour Like? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests did not have any specific requests for destinations and simply wished to "learn about the history of Kyoto and the daily life of the people of Kyoto," so I proposed the itinerary above, taking into account the location of the Hotel and the tour time. The guests were a group from Europe visiting Japan. They had arrived in Kyoto the day before and had been overwhelmed by the crowds, so I felt a little apologetic that the itinerary included Hanamikoji and Yasaka Shrine. However, if I removed those, it would be difficult to explain what a geisha is, so I decided to proceed as planned. As we passed from Minamiza through Kawaramachi into Miyagawacho, we were fortunate enough to come across a maiko and a geiko. They were standing beside what appeared to be a company retreat bus, so perhaps there was some connection. The guests understood that pointing a camera at them would be rude, but both the guests and I were delighted at how fortunate we were. Upon entering Miyagawacho, I explained the three-ring "mitsuwa" mark inscribed on the lanterns and the tea houses. The guests were pleased with how quiet and atmospheric Miyagawacho was. I also had them view the recently completed kaburenjo theater from the outside. They admired how, although the building was new, its design harmonized well with the surroundings. Next, we entered Ebisu Shrine from the back. They liked this quiet place as well. Then we decided to pass through Kenninji, which is guarded by Ebisu Shrine and is one of the three rings of Miyagawacho. Before that, we passed through Zenkyoan, whose messenger is the boar. As expected, they loved the adorable boar figurines and enjoyed the garden's quiet atmosphere. Next, we went to Kenninji. The guests seemed quite interested in the religious views of Japanese people, asking about the relationship between Shinto and Buddhism and whether there had been conflict between them. I explained that when Buddhism entered Japan there was a struggle between supporters and opponents, that afterward the two came to harmonize well through the fusion of Shinto and Buddhism, that a movement to abolish Buddhism arose in the Meiji era but did not succeed, and that Kenninji itself was affected by that movement. They were very pleased with how quiet and lovely this place was too. Next, we strolled through Hanamikoji, and since I had explained the Gion Festival back in Miyagawacho, I had them view a life-size festival float at the Kanji Museum as a way to understand the daily life of Kyoto's people. (The guests preferred Miyagawacho to Hanamikoji.) Then we headed to Yasaka Shrine, the birthplace of geisha culture and the Gion Festival. At Ebisu Shrine I had explained that shrines generally have auxiliary and subordinate shrines, but Yasaka Shrine has particularly many of them, and the guests showed considerable interest in this, so I decided to walk around the entire grounds. My plan had been to exit from the back and go to Chionin, but since we came all the way around and exited again from the west gate, I decided to have them stroll along the Shirakawa River. As expected, they were moved by its beauty. Just then we could see the charming lanterns of the Furukawa shopping street, so I asked, "This is an Instagram spot; would you like to go?" and since they said they definitely wanted to, we crossed Ichijo Bridge, where photos were taken to post on social media. We crossed back over Ichijo Bridge and returned to the Sanmon gate of Chionin, which I believe is worth seeing. Next we went to see the bell, but since I was not confident about climbing the "men's slope," we went up the "women's slope." Along the way, I had explained how Japanese Buddhism developed from Nara Buddhism to Tendai and Shingon, and further, aiming for something more accessible, to Jodo Buddhism. So when I told them that the halls are large, open to many people, and richly decorated inside, they understood well. A memorial service happened to be taking place, and they were able to actually see the monks, hear the sound of the wooden fish drum and the monks chanting the sutras, and were deeply moved. Next we climbed the stairs and viewed the bell tower. They showed interest in the bell tower, but also became interested in the graves of the temple's parishioners visible from there, asking, "What is that?" They said, "Chionin is a relatively quiet place surrounded by mountains, and although the climb was hard, we were able to see something worth the effort." Then we walked toward Shorenin. Since the grounds of Chionin extend quite far, they were surprised by how vast it was. I had hoped for tranquility at Shorenin, but there happened to be a flower arrangement exhibition with many visitors, so I felt a little apologetic that it fell short of expectations. But at the same time, they were able to see ikebana, noticed that the lengths of the flowers used in ikebana differ, and became absorbed in each individual work. Afterward, I had hoped to have them stroll through the garden, but it began to rain and the guests said they had seen enough of the garden, so I decided to end the tour. The guests told me, "You took us to places we could never have gone on our own; it was a perfect tour," and my careful planning had paid off, and I was able to spend a meaningful half day. They also purchased a HOKUSAI umbrella that works for both sun and rain. At the East Gardens of the Imperial Palace, they were deeply impressed by its vastness and the beauty of the gardens. I helped them purchase round-trip tickets to Kyoto at Tokyo Station, and then we parted ways. After returning home, I sent them information about Sanjusangendo and Nanzenji in Kyoto.

    What's a Private Himeji Castle and Koko-en Garden Tour Like? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were visitors from North America, and the tour was conducted with rest breaks along the way. On Miyuki-dori shopping street heading toward the sites, they carefully selected and purchased a handmade "maneki-neko" (beckoning cat) as a souvenir at a shop specializing in them. Koko-en Garden could be visited smoothly, but Himeji Castle was very crowded today with many visitors (perhaps more domestic visitors than usual?), and temporary entry restrictions were in place inside the main keep. The guests commented that both Koko-en Garden and Himeji Castle were excellent choices and that they were very satisfied. After the tour, the guests planned to return to their hotel in Osaka, but before that they wished to have lunch, so I introduced a restaurant on Miyuki-dori shopping street, and we parted ways there.

    if you have any interest in Japanese Sake as well as one aspect of Japanese cultures. Of course, you can have tastings of various kinds of Sake there.

    foods here. In this respect, I strongly recommend you would try not only famous Japanese cuisine such as Sushi, Tempura or Suki-yaki but some

    explanation for these three foods.

    1) Tako-yaki
    Tako-yaki is a snack filled with pieces of octopus in a batter of flour , egg and soup stock. You can call them octopus dumplings or balls. “Tako” means
    octopus and “yaki” means grilled or broiled.
    2) Okonomi-yaki
    This word Okonomi-yaki means “cook just as you like” and you can use whatever you like as toppings, such as beef, pork, shrimp, squid and octopus.
    Okonomi-yaki is round shape and just like pancakes or pizza in shape mainly made from egg, flour and water.
    3) Kushi-katsu
    Kushi-katsu is skewered cutlet or deep-fried foods on a stick. “Kushi” means skewer and “katsu” means cutlet. Various kinds of foods are used for
    ingredients such as beef, pork, chicken, shrimp, squid, octopus and lots of kinds of vegetables.

    Actually, the western Japan including Osaka, Kobe and Himeji is called as “Home of such local soul foods”. You should give it a try and I am sure
    that you like them very much.

    I sincerely hope that I can be your tour guide this time in Kobe, Osaka and Himeji. If my guests said to me after the tour, “I have had a very good

    Title: What's a Private One-Day Kyoto Tour of Nijo Castle, Kinkaku-ji, and Ryoan-ji Like? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were a group visiting Japan from North America. It was their first time in Kyoto. I took the group to Nijo Castle, Kinkaku-ji, and Ryoan-ji. Although there was a bit of light rain and it was cloudy, the weather turned out to be ideal for sightseeing. The group asked many questions. My explanations about the influence of Japanese ukiyo-e on Western Impressionist painters, and the influence of Japanese kimono on Western clothing, seemed to interest them very much. At Nijo Castle, the group listened with great interest to my explanation of Japan's national isolation policy, showing a keen interest in history. Some of the guests said they appreciated the wall paintings at Nijo Castle. Others were particularly impressed by the reflection of the Golden Pavilion in the mirror pond at Kinkaku-ji. Having a strong interest in photography, they took many photos throughout the tour. After the tour, I took the group to Nishiki Market, where we said our goodbyes.

    Title: What's a Private One-Day Tokyo Tour Like? A Licensed Guide's Report on Shrines, Temples, and Gardens The guests were visiting Japan for the first time. Since they had only one day in Tokyo, I proposed a course covering a shrine, a temple, a Japanese garden, and the Imperial Palace, and they enjoyed each of these. They especially liked the tranquil atmosphere of Meiji Shrine, and were moved that such a space could exist in the middle of the city, saying they could hardly believe it.     What Is a Private One-Day Kyoto Tour Like? A Licensed Guide's Report Covering Kiyomizu-dera, Fushimi Inari, and Kinkaku-ji The guests were very pleasant, and since they walked quickly, we were able to see the sights ahead of schedule. They wanted to see as much as possible because they were returning to their home country the next day. As they had eaten a lot in the morning, they said they wished to skip lunch, so I suggested we use the lunchtime to visit Fushimi Inari Taisha, which they were delighted to do. The driver also knew Kyoto very well, so we were able to visit five places. We arrived at Kiyomizu-dera before 9:00, so there were relatively few tourists, but after 9:00 the crowds suddenly increased. The guests showed great interest in the Kannon statue. At the bamboo grove, the driver chose the shortest route, so we finished seeing it in under 30 minutes. Adashino Nenbutsu-ji and Otagi Nenbutsu-ji were more crowded than I had ever seen, but we still managed to tour them on schedule, and we also finished Kinkaku-ji in about 30 minutes. Along the way, the guests sampled yatsuhashi and enjoyed a local Kyoto specialty. We successfully visited all five places and returned to the hotel within the allotted time.

    When Guests From North America Visit Omiya Bonsai Village: A Licensed Guide's Private Tour Report This was a private tour for guests visiting from North America. One of the guests grows bonsai, and the tour had been arranged as a gift for that person. We arrived at Toro Station at 10:10. After explaining the history of the Bonsai Village using the map at the station, we headed to the Omiya Bonsai Art Museum. At the time of the visit, the special exhibition "Omiya Bonsai Village 100th Anniversary Commemorative Special Exhibition: Green Frontier – 100 Years of Omiya Bonsai Village" was being held, and the bonsai and explanatory panels in the Collection Gallery were quite different from usual. (Normally there are panels explaining how to view bonsai, the types of bonsai, bonsai techniques, and the history of the Bonsai Village, but at present they introduce each of the bonsai nurseries in the village.) In the Collection Gallery and the tatami-room display, mainly pine and juniper bonsai from Toju-en were exhibited, and they were very impressive. (Going forward, bonsai from each nursery are scheduled to be displayed on a weekly rotation.) The guests viewed the bonsai with great enthusiasm, and were especially captivated by the twisting trunk of a shimpaku juniper. In the garden, one of the guests went ahead to look around, and since the sunlight was strong, sat down in the pavilion to enjoy the view, while I walked slowly around the garden together with the other guest. At the shop, one of the guests purchased a tote bag with a bonsai design. After that, we went to Mansei-en. There, the ever-kind Mr. Ishikawa introduced us to a group planting of shimpaku juniper and Tsuyama hinoki cypress that had been displayed at the Osaka Expo, and shared many enjoyable stories. By then it was already 12:45. Due to the heat, one of the guests was a little tired, so we took a short break at the Bonsai Shiki-no-Ie to have some water. We decided to visit Fuyo-en after lunch, so I guided them to Seiko-en and then took them to the bonsai restaurant, where the tour concluded.

A Licensed Guide's Report on Ueno, the Tokyo National Museum, and Asakusa The guests were a group visiting from North America, arriving in Japan the day before. After spending a few days in Tokyo, they planned to travel around Kyoto, Fukuoka, and Beppu during their stay in Japan. It was their first visit to Japan. The guests' contact was arranged through a travel agency, and the itinerary was provided by a representative there. There had been no communication until about a week before the tour, but I was able to get in touch after coordinating through [Japan Guide Agency (JGA Inc.)](https://www.j-g-a.org/). The travel agency provided recommendations for restaurants and sweets shops that could accommodate specific dietary needs, and we used them for lunch and shopping. The guests were very pleased with both. Accommodating such requests can be challenging, but the information from this travel agency was very helpful. Although the weather was unfortunately drizzly, I guided the guests through Ueno Park, the Tokyo National Museum, and Asakusa. Walking was almost no problem, and we completed the planned itinerary as scheduled. The guests were very interested in Japanese art and history, and viewed the exhibits at the Tokyo National Museum with great enthusiasm. At the end, they bought some sweets in Asakusa and returned to their hotel, where we parted ways.
