    What Can You See on a Private Tokyo Tour When It's Too Foggy for Skytree? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were visitors from North America, traveling to Japan for the first time. They had roots in various parts of the world and appeared to be very experienced travelers who had visited many countries. Today's tour ended up being significantly changed from the original itinerary. Originally it was planned as a 4-hour tour visiting Asakusa and Tokyo Skytree, but the sky was cloudy and thick fog completely enveloped the tops of the high-rise buildings. Fortunately, they had not yet made a reservation for the Tokyo Skytree observation deck, and since it turned out they wished to see historical and cultural places anywhere in Tokyo, we agreed to postpone the observation deck—where the view would be almost invisible—to the next day, and to follow a route different from Asakusa today. At the first stop, the Imperial Palace, they were moved by the sight of the pine trees, and at Tokyo Station they were excited by the various restaurants and shops. After two days of sightseeing in Tokyo, including today, they planned to visit Kanazawa, Kyoto, Osaka, and other places, so I showed them the Shinkansen platform. We walked from the Yaesu exit to Nihonbashi, and in the basement food hall of Takashimaya, they were captivated by all sorts of delicious-looking Japanese bento boxes, fruits, and sushi. They purchased matcha-flavored sweets at the confectionery corner and tried them while sitting on a bench in the station plaza. They were also greatly impressed by the solemn atmosphere of the forest at Meiji Shrine and took many photos. At Shibuya, where the tour ended, they were thrilled by the scramble crossing and filmed videos. At home they keep two large dogs, including one with Akita bloodlines, and they showed me photos. Being such dog lovers, they were greatly impacted by the statue of Hachiko. One of the guests shared a memory of being so moved by the movie "Hachi" that they cried. Since it was the end of the tour time, I recommended a place for them to have lunch, and after confirming the menu, we said goodbye.

They had arrived in Japan the previous evening after a long journey with a connecting flight, and looked tired from the moment we met. Since they were wearing baseball caps, I congratulated them on their team's big win the day before to lift the mood. Due to unfortunate rain and their fatigue, we set off after dropping Koishikawa Korakuen Garden from the planned itinerary. In Asakusa, some of the guests began to feel discomfort in the back and behind the knees, so we took a break at a retro coffee shop in Asakusa. I received questions about the Japanese national character, pensions, and healthcare. Just at that moment there was an earthquake, so I also included an explanation about tectonic plates. Among today's destinations, they surprisingly seemed to like the East Gardens of the Imperial Palace, while they were overwhelmed by the crowds in Asakusa. After lunch, some of the guests left and headed back to the hotel. Since they will board a cruise ship in a few days, they have a free day tomorrow, so during the meal I gave advice on how to spend it. I confirmed that, regardless of East or West, the main concerns of our generation are pensions and healthcare. An 8-hour tour on the day after arriving from a long journey across a 13-hour time difference may be demanding for guests of this age group.

    Title: What Is a Private Tokyo Walking Tour Like? A Licensed Guide's Report on the Imperial Palace East Gardens and Meiji Shrine The guests were visitors from North America who had arrived the previous night and were still adjusting to jet lag. They planned to stay in Tokyo until the day after next and then travel around various parts of Japan by cruise, and it seemed another guided tour was arranged for the following day as well. For this booking, a travel agency related to the cruise served as an intermediary, and communication was quite difficult at first, but in the end we were able to stay in touch through a messaging app. With the state visit of the U.S. President beginning the next day, security around the embassy adjacent to the hotel was at a considerable level. As mentioned, the guests did not have any Japanese yen at all, and since the convenience store next to the hotel was closed—possibly due to security or because it was Sunday—the ATM was unavailable, so they exchanged money at the front desk. At the Imperial Palace East Gardens, the autumn foliage had not developed well, and some leaves were withering before changing color. Even so, since gardening was a hobby, the visit was appreciated. At Meiji Shrine, the chrysanthemum festival had just begun, and although the flowers were not yet fully in bloom, it was possible to see some rare varieties, which was also well received. After this, we had planned to move on to Shibuya, but as there was a wish to look at boutiques, I guided the way from Omotesando to Cat Street, after which the guests continued on their own and returned to the hotel by taxi, and we parted ways here.

    After I retired from the business, I traveled to most of the major sightseeing spots in all 47 prefectures in Japan.

    My guide is starting from a brief history of the site where I am going to guide. I usually add a briefing about Japanese culture based on religions, such as Shinto Shrine and Buddhist temples. A geographic background behind the history is also important.

    Travelling along the JR central line where guests can stopover at major animation studios (it is not accepted to visit the inside). The majority of animation studios such as TMS Entertainment, SUNRISE, A1 Pictures etc. are located in this area. Suginami Animation museum, Studio Ghibli and Ghibli Museum are also located.
    Guests can feel old houses in the Spirited Away scene in the Edo-Tokyo Open Air Architectural Museum.

    I can also provide a pilgrimage to the sacred place (shooting location) for the Shinkai Makoto animation movies such as Your name, Weathering with you, and Suzume.

    Another interesting feature is to visit authentic Japanese style pub meals such as Yakitori, Karaage, and Sushi etc.
    Asakusa Hoppy Street, Ameyoko Street, Yurakucho, Shimbashi, Shinjuku Golden gai, Shinjuku Omoide Yokocho are nice to visit.

    A Sake tasting at Sake Cellar can be an option.

    In addition to the above, I am available in the neighboring cities.

    Kawagoe is an old town developed in the 17th century. It has very close relationship with the Edo central government. Kawagoe castle ruins, Kitain temple and 500 Buddha statues will welcome the guests.
    These areas are renovated and provide an old days atmosphere.
    Japanese style sweets food stands will fascinate the guests.
    Kawagoe is about 1 – 1.5 train trip from Tokyo.

    Kamakura is the first Samurai worriers government established in the late 12th century.
    The Buddhism are introduced to Japan in the 6th century, and flourished at Nara and Kyoto later. A newer Buddhism sect such as Zen has well developed at Kamakura area.
    Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine, Gigantic Buddha statue at Kotokuin Temple and the flower temple Hasedera Temple are must-see.
    Kamakura is about 1 – 1.5 train trip from Tokyo.

    Title: What Is a Private Half-Day Matsushima Tour from Sendai Like? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were a close-knit group visiting Japan for the second time. One of them had studied Buddhism at university. The forecast had called for steady rain for several days beforehand, so I had prepared alternative plans in case of bad weather, and one of the guests, also concerned, exchanged emails with me frequently. Also, within the limited time of four hours, since the travel time from Sendai would count as part of the guiding time, they told me they would spend time in Matsushima after the tour and asked to part ways in Matsushima. When I asked whether they would like to meet at Matsushimakaigan as well, they thanked me for the flexible arrangement. They seemed to enjoy Matsushima to the fullest. When the group arrived at the meeting point, everyone was fully prepared, wearing waterproof shoes and ponchos, so we decided to walk around Oshima as originally planned. We avoided the areas with poor footing as much as possible and visited all the points where Matsushima Bay could be viewed. Since the rain did not let up, the sightseeing boat seemed to offer a welcome break. On the route leading to Fukuurajima, there were signs marking tsunami damage in various places, so when I spoke about the state of the damage at the time of the earthquake disaster, they listened with great interest. We reached Fukuura Bridge after four o'clock, and although it was getting dark underfoot, I chose a safe route and guided them to the highlights. On the way back, since I had introduced the illuminations at Entsuin or Zuiganji, we walked through the illuminated cave-lined approach decorated for the event and parted ways in front of Zuiganji. They seemed to listen with interest to the bell rung by the Zuiganji monks at five in the evening and the sound of the evening sutra chanting. On the way back, I handed them a copy of the Senseki Line timetable for the train to Sendai, and since they said they would be exploring Sendai the next day, I also gave them an English map of Sendai.

After sightseeing in Tokyo, they planned to go on a cruise tour around Southeast Asian countries. At Meiji Shrine, they appeared to be impressed by the quiet and solemn atmosphere, which was very different from Shibuya. At the Imperial Palace, they listened with great interest to historical explanations about the role of the Emperor, the Meiji Restoration, and the Edo Shogunate. At Sensoji Temple, they listened with interest to explanations about the differences between temples and shrines, as well as the Kaminarimon Gate.     What Is a Private Nikko Day Tour Like? A Licensed Guide's Report on Rinnoji, Toshogu, and the Imperial Villa The guests were visitors from North America, visiting Japan for the first time. After sightseeing in Tokyo, they planned to continue on to Hakone, Kyoto, and Osaka. At Rinnoji Temple, they seemed deeply impressed by the giant Buddhist statues in the Sanbutsudo Hall and the beautiful Japanese garden. At Toshogu Shrine, they showed great interest in the lavish decorations, such as the Three Wise Monkeys and the Yomeimon Gate. At the Nikko Tamozawa Imperial Villa Memorial Park, they appeared impressed by the luxurious rooms as they were when Emperor Taisho lived there, as well as by the beautiful garden.     What Is a Full-Day Private Tokyo Tour Like? A Licensed Guide's Report Weather and tour overview: Light rain had continued since the previous day, but it mostly stopped in the latter half. The guests were a group from North America whose arrival in Japan was delayed due to a flight delay, which changed their schedule, so this appeared to be a case reassigned from another guide. Because of this, the case came in only about one week before the tour day, and the guide points were largely decided in advance, so there was no need to spend much time discussing the destinations. On the day before the tour, I received word that they had already visited one location (Shibuya Crossing), and I thought an additional destination might be needed, but since Shibuya Crossing itself takes only a short time, this was absorbed by adjusting time at the planned destinations and at a stop along the way. Guests and tour details: Some of the guests had visited Japan before, while others were visiting for the first time. After arriving in Tokyo, they had only been to a fish market (possibly Tsukiji), and otherwise they had visited Kyoto and Hakone. Today was their first and only full tour in Tokyo, and they were scheduled to depart for home in the evening. I had considered several candidates for lunch, but at the first restaurant they commented that it was too American, so I took them to a Japanese-style set-meal restaurant, and they seemed very satisfied. During the lunch conversation, they mentioned that Asakusa was nice, but they preferred Hamarikyu Gardens. On the way to Hamarikyu, they purchased coffee at a Starbucks, and on the way from Hamarikyu to the station they stopped at a Don Quijote, which took some unplanned time. I became concerned about the finishing time, but because Shibuya Crossing had been omitted, we were able to keep it to roughly two hours and finish. Requests: In terms of tour time, we actually departed the Hotel about 10 minutes late because it took time for the guests to gather in the lobby and to check their luggage. Also, the tour ended at 14:10 in front of the main hall of Meiji Shrine. As a request, if the options for the tour start and end times could be set in 5-minute increments, I think it would be possible to enter the times a little more precisely to match the actual situation, so I would appreciate your consideration.

    What Is a Private Tsukiji and Tuna Auction Tour in Tokyo Like? A Licensed Guide's Report We were not able to secure a very good spot for the tuna auction, so it was a little hard to see. I think the guests enjoyed themselves, occasionally taking videos. When it came to sushi, part of the group mentioned not being very fond of it, so I wondered what to do, but since another said they loved it, we decided to go together. We ate while consulting with the sushi chef, and in the end finished with kohada (gizzard shad), just like a true fish lover would. They remarked that it tasted completely different because it was so fresh, and enjoyed it thoroughly. After a brief walk around Tsukiji, I introduced them to a recommended coffee shop, and we parted ways there.
