Tokyo in Half a Day: Grand Nikko Tokyo Daiba & Takeshita Street

    Tour Itinerary

    • 10:40 Hamarikyu
    • 11:50 Tokyo Tower

    • 16:20 Dismissal @ Grand Nikko Tokyo Daiba

What Is a Private Full-Day Tour of Tokyo Like? A Licensed Guide's Report on Tokyo Tower, Hamarikyu, Nezu, and Takeshita Street I guided a group visiting from Europe on a private full-day tour of Tokyo. Since they wished to see four specific locations and be taken all the way back to their hotel, they extended the tour by two hours, and even then we went over by about 20 minutes. As they did not have PASMO or similar IC cards, we purchased tickets at each station. They were friendly and enjoyed chatting, and one of them kept the jokes coming throughout the day. Because their walking pace was slower, I proceeded carefully and suggested rest breaks along the way. The chosen locations were somewhat far apart, so travel took a bit of time, but they said they enjoyed seeing the many different cityscapes of Tokyo. For lunch they wanted something light, and at the food court in Tokyo Tower they shared a set of sandwiches, fries, and drinks. One of the guests loves animals and showed great interest in the herons, ducks, and cormorants (?) at Hamarikyu, the cats around Nezu, and the turtles and carp at Nezu Shrine. They were also delighted with Takeshita Street, which they found a fascinating place. When we parted ways in front of the hotel, they thanked me and said it had been a wonderful tour. They also told me about an app called "big" that can be used as a whiteboard, which I plan to try using in my work.

Title: What Can You See in One Private Day in Hiroshima? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests requested that, in addition to the two World Heritage Sites, they also wanted to visit Hiroshima Castle and Shukkeien Garden, even if it made the day busier. I explained at the start that it would be a somewhat hurried tour before we began. Thanks to the early meeting time and the guests being very cooperative, we moved along smoothly and stayed right on schedule. The guests looked carefully through the exhibits at the museum, and at Hiroshima Castle they even tried on a samurai helmet, appearing to enjoy every site we visited. They finished their okonomiyaki quickly, and on Miyajima they enjoyed strolling around and shopping.

Hi, I’m Kahori, a nationally licensed tour guide, and delighted to show people around this area. For the past almost 10 years, I have mainly guided foreign medical professionals around Hiroshima City and Miyajima, gaining a deep understanding of the effects of radiation and the support for A-bomb survivors.
Hiroshima is a city of rivers and the sea. Along the rivers Cherry trees line, and the calm Seto Inland Sea, dotted with islands, creates a stunning landscape. Also, the sea has many islands called “art islands” which have fantastic arts relating to the art festival “Setouchi Triennale”. In addition to our two World Heritage Sites, this area is rich in attractive resources. I hope many of you will come and experience this fascinating land. Personally, I am very passionate about modern art and enjoy sports like stand-up paddle boarding (SUP) on our rivers.
I look forward to meeting you, interacting with you, and also, learning from you!

Title: What's a Full-Day Private Tour of Tokyo Like? A Licensed Guide's Report on Akihabara, Asakusa, and Harajuku The guests were visitors from North America, on the second day of a Tokyo tour. This private tour was arranged through [Japan Guide Agency (JGA Inc.)](https://www.j-g-a.org/). Since the accommodation was in Akihabara, we started with a stroll around Akihabara. When I took them to the Radio Kaikan building, one of the guests showed a lot of interest and said they would come back on their own. In Asakusa, I explained the views of the district and Senso-ji Temple from the observation deck of the culture center, and when I mentioned there was a delicious tonkatsu restaurant nearby, lunch was immediately decided. They savored some of the finest tonkatsu, and then we headed to Harajuku. On Takeshita Street they were amazed by the capybaras and mini pigs, and they thoroughly enjoyed Tokyo.

Title: What Does a Private Tokyo Day Tour Include? A Licensed Guide's Report on the Imperial Palace, Kiyosumi Garden, and Asakusa Today I guided a group visiting from North America. Most guests come to Japan with only a general idea of what they want to see, but this group had specific interests. Today was the first time I guided anyone to the statue of Kusunoki Masashige at the Imperial Palace Outer Garden, so I took the opportunity to review the Northern and Southern Courts period and the Kenmu Restoration in preparation. At Kiyosumi Garden, when I explained that the red Akadama stone from Sado was "expensive enough to buy one or two houses," I was asked, "Why is it red?" 💦 (I later learned that it contains a trace amount of iron oxide.) In Asakusa, I was asked about the finial on top of the five-story pagoda 💦💦 (Originally, its prototype was a parasol placed over a mound enshrining Buddha's relics, meant to protect against the hot Indian sun.) For lunch we had beef bowl, mountain vegetable soba, and sake-steamed dumplings at a dining hall within Meiji Shrine. I was asked the names of the mountain vegetables in the soba 💦 (warabi is bracken, and zenmai is fiddleheads.) The guests said that in Osaka, where they are heading next, they plan to visit the teamLab Botanical Garden in Nagai, Dotonbori, Shinsaibashi, Kuromon Market, Hozenji Yokocho, and Minoo Quasi-National Park.

What Is a Private Kanazawa Walking Tour Like? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were visitors from Europe. I heard that traveling to Japan is currently very popular in their home region. The guests had an interest in samurai culture. We visited Kenrokuen Garden, and I entered Seisonkaku Villa for the first time in a while, which the guests liked very much. They sat in the garden for about ten minutes and said they could stay there all day without getting bored. During the tour, one of the guests had a cough but did not have a fever or a sore throat and only wanted some cough medicine, so we stopped by a pharmacy partway through the tour. After that, I recommended a place for dinner in the Nagamachi samurai district, and the tour came to an end.

What's a Full-Day Private Tour of Tokyo Like? A Licensed Guide's Report from Japan Guide Agency The guests came from North America. I had also lived in the same region before and we were able to talk about many things, which made the tour very enjoyable. The guests had arrived in Japan a few days before a cruise and were enjoying sightseeing in Tokyo. When I was assigned, they also requested a guide for the following day, but since I had a [Japan Guide Agency (JGA Inc.)](https://www.j-g-a.org/) training session, I introduced another [Japan Guide Agency](https://www.j-g-a.org/) tour to them. As they had no particular requests regarding destinations, I guided them to representative sightseeing spots such as Meiji Shrine, Asakusa, Shibuya, and the area around Shinjuku where their hotel was located. At Meiji Shrine, we happened to come across a yokozuna ring-entering ceremony and were able to watch it for a little while. We traveled back and forth between Shibuya and Asakusa, so the time spent on the subway became quite long, but the guests were very knowledgeable and shared many interesting stories, so the time passed in the blink of an eye. Originally the plan was to return to the hotel, but since they had a reservation for afternoon tea at the Ritz-Carlton at 4:00, I walked them through the National Art Center and saw them off at Tokyo Midtown before parting ways. I hope they continue to enjoy their cruise journey.

Title: What Is a Private Tokyo Walking Tour Like via a Licensed Guide? A Guide's Report The guests were visitors from North America. Since there was no direct contact until we met at the hotel, I felt a little uneasy beforehand. The booking came through a travel agency, so I had no information about the guests in advance. As shared with [Japan Guide Agency (JGA Inc.)](https://www.j-g-a.org/) by c.c. email, I had sent a proposed itinerary to the travel agency in September, but there was no response from the agency, and the day of the tour arrived without any reply. The travel agency had also indicated that the guests wished to visit Meiji Shrine and Harajuku, and that Zojoji Temple and the Imperial Palace would not be possible. However, when I asked the guests directly in the lobby about their preferences, they said they would very much like to visit historical sites such as Zojoji Temple and the Imperial Palace, and that walking would be no problem at all. Regarding bookings made through a travel agency, I believe that unless [Japan Guide Agency](https://www.j-g-a.org/) develops the necessary infrastructure, it will be difficult to improve the customer experience and may lead to complaints.

What Is a Private Full-Day Kyoto Walking Tour Like? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were visitors from Oceania. Before this tour, they had traveled through Hakone, Takayama, and Kanazawa. They were both strong walkers and were able to move around without any rest breaks. Since they planned to return to Nishiki Market later during their stay, we did not stop there, and instead took a lunch break at a sushi restaurant I often use in the Shinkyogoku area. Perhaps because the traffic restrictions for an international conference held from the 4th to the 6th were lifted at noon on the 6th, the bus heading from Sanjusangendo to Kiyomizu-dera was extremely crowded, and the approach and grounds of Kiyomizu-dera saw the largest crowds I have experienced this year. We did not go up to the main hall, nor did we line up for the pure water at the Otowa Waterfall, and simply passed through. As the guests wished to return to the Hotel to rest, I saw them to the nearest bus stop. Since they seemed to be heading to Osaka the next day, I introduced some sights and dining spots before we said goodbye.

Since they had visited Meiji Shrine and the Imperial Palace the previous day, they requested the Asakusa area. They did not seem to eat much in the morning, so at Tsukiji they only had the sample tastings and did not order any other food or drinks. Since Tsukiji did not take much time, we made an unplanned stop in Ueno. We visited Kiyomizu Kannon-do, Hanazono Shrine, and Toshogu Shrine. The guests showed interest in goshuin (temple and shrine stamps) and purchased one. They mentioned they plan to continue collecting goshuin in Kyoto and Kanazawa. Since they wanted to visit Tokyo Skytree on their own after the tour, I saw them off at Tobu Asakusa Station.

What Is a Private 3-Generation Family Day Tour of Kyoto Like? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were a very pleasant three-generation group visiting from Oceania. At Togetsukyo Bridge, we stayed for about 20 minutes to take photos, and I gave explanations about Horin-ji Temple and Togetsukyo Bridge. At Kinkaku-ji, some of the guests turned back from the entrance and waited in the car. We had planned to visit Kiyomizu-dera after lunch, but it looked like it would take a very long time for the car to get into the parking lot, so with the guests' consent we skipped it. Since we were able to see Fushimi Inari Taisha earlier than expected, thanks to the driver's kindness we visited Sanjusangendo to make up for skipping Kiyomizu-dera. Some of the guests waited in the car, while others went in to see it. It turned out to be better than expected, and they were quite moved. For lunch we had planned to go to a particular restaurant, but since some of the guests were tired and did not seem able to eat much, I took them to a conveyor-belt sushi restaurant instead. They were very pleased and told me it was a "Good choice." Because some of the guests appeared tired, we finished more than 30 minutes early, but with their consent we decided to end the tour there.
