    What Is a Private Tokyo Tour Like at Meiji Shrine and the Tokyo National Museum? A Guide's Report The guests were a group visiting Japan. When they left the hotel, one of them mentioned that walking was difficult and that they were not feeling well. I guided them slowly along Omotesando, taking rest breaks along the way. What normally takes about 5 minutes took 30 minutes. At Meiji Shrine, I guided one of the guests to the main hall, and they listened attentively to explanations about religious aspects. One of the guests was interested in Japanese culture and art, so we spent a good amount of time at the Tokyo National Museum. They listened very carefully to my explanations. Meanwhile, another guest rested on a bench outside. After resting, they gradually recovered.

    • After meeting in front of the customer's hotel, we headed to Tsukiji. At Tsukiji, they had a great time putting their names on chopsticks, tasting Japanese tea, and eating Kobe beef skewers. After going around the market and stopping by Tsukiji Hongwanji Temple, we took the subway to the Kabuki-za Theater. They purchased souvenirs in the basement of the Kabuki-za and took photos of the building. They also seemed interested in Kabuki itself. We then walked through Ginza, and while enjoying shopping by stopping at shops that caught their attention (they seemed to really like Itoya), we arrived at Tokyo Station. While looking at the station building, they asked various questions about Japanese culture and the structure of society. They also paid attention to the students on their school trip. After that, we went to Shibuya Station and viewed the Scramble Crossing from Shibuya Mark City. They were impressed by how many people crossed the intersection at the same time. The tour ended there. Since we happened to be taking the same train home, we rode together partway and said goodbye at the station.

    What Is a Private Guided Tour in Japan Like? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were very interested in Japanese daily life and how Japanese society works, which motivated me to keep updating my own knowledge. They showed great interest not only in history but also in how people live in Japan today. When I asked how the day had been during our final review of the tour, they said they had enjoyed it very much. They said that Japan was completely different from all the other countries they had traveled to, and that everyone was polite and wonderful. I was very happy that they came away with such a good impression.

One of them had visited Japan several times before, while the other was visiting for the first time. They had arrived in Yokohama this morning on a cruise from North America, having stopped at Alaska, Kushiro, and Aomori along the way. At the Imperial Palace, they listened with great interest to the historical explanations about the role of the Emperor, the Meiji Restoration, and the Edo Shogunate. At the Nippori Fabric Town, which they had strongly requested to visit, they were very interested in browsing the fabric and craft shops, as one of the guests enjoys handicrafts as a hobby. Unfortunately, some shops were closed on Sunday, so they planned to return on their own another day. At Rikugien Garden, they seemed deeply impressed by the beautiful Japanese garden. Since they said they could return to their accommodation on their own, we parted ways in Asakusa. As I responded exactly according to the guests' wishes, I believe they were satisfied.

    Title: What's a Private Kyoto Tour of Arashiyama and Quiet Temples Like? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were visitors from North America on their first trip to Japan. Their itinerary took them from Tokyo to Hakone and Kyoto, and afterwards they planned to visit Nara and Osaka before returning home. There had been no email discussion about the places to visit beforehand, so we decided everything in the hotel lobby that morning. They were bright and very easygoing. Having arrived in Kyoto the day before and explored the lively areas around Pontocho and Gion, they said they would prefer somewhere as quiet as possible today, and they made a request to visit Otagi Nenbutsu-ji Temple in Saga-Arashiyama, which they had heard about for some time. Obai-in is a temple I love for its beautiful moss garden, tea room, and dry landscape garden, and it is rarely overcrowded. I have recently been including it in my itineraries for guests who say they want to visit somewhere quiet. In Arashiyama, I enjoy explaining what Arashiyama historically was in the first place. It is a place packed with stories that are so characteristically Kyoto — religious, literary, and folkloric — such as Obon, the Bodhisattva Jizo, the stone piles of Sai-no-Kawara, the Gozan no Okuribi bonfires, waka poetry, the Hyakunin Isshu, and The Tale of Genji, so I inevitably get carried away. In place of lunch, we had mochi and matcha with 400 years of history at a teahouse. I gave a very simple explanation of the etiquette at a tea gathering, which was very well received. Today, there were a few points where I got the order of my explanations slightly wrong or became long-winded in response to questions, which I regret, but I am grateful that they always listened patiently to the end. At the end, they invited me to have a beer with them at the hotel. I knew they were tired, so I declined, but the invitation was heartwarming and I was grateful for it.

    What Is a Private Tokyo Day Tour Like? A Licensed Guide's Report on Shinjuku Gyoen and Shibuya The meeting point was at a hotel where the reception desks for two different buildings are located on the same floor but separately, and the guests had initially been waiting at one of the reception areas, but thanks to the hotel staff, we were able to meet up without any problems. The guests were a group. I proceeded slowly, taking more breaks than usual to accommodate their pace. Although the weather was unfortunately not ideal, the guests seemed to enjoy gardening, and Shinjuku Gyoen was even more popular than expected.     Title: What Can You See on a Private Tokyo Day Tour Beyond the Usual Spots? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were visitors from North America, visiting Japan for the first time, having arrived around 7:00 PM the previous evening. Since their tour for the following days already included the main sightseeing spots in Tokyo, I suggested other places to visit. The tour was originally scheduled to start at 9:00, but because shops and other places often open too late for that time, we changed the start time to 10:00 in advance, which allowed everything to go smoothly. First, we viewed the Shibuya Crossing from above at Shibuya Mark City. Taking the Ginza Line connects directly to Mark City, so it was ideal in terms of flow. After that, we actually crossed the intersection and explored a little. We took photos at the Hachiko statue. Next, we went to Takeshita Street in Harajuku. At Kiddy Land, the guests purchased a souvenir. After that, we had lunch in Tsukiji. Being a Sunday, some shops were closed, and it was quite crowded, so instead of street food, the guests enjoyed sushi at a sushi restaurant. Since they were full and starting to feel sleepy, I suggested walking to Ginza rather than going to Yanaka Ginza. After showing them Nissan Crossing and Kyukyodo, we returned to the hotel and parted ways. Today happened to be my birthday, and I was unexpectedly given a birthday card as a gift, which made it an unforgettable day.

We first visited the Imperial Palace, starting with an explanation of the Otemon Gate, and then strolled through the Ninomaru Garden. A Licensed Guide's Report Although the schedule had to be changed due to a typhoon, we were blessed with good weather, and it was a slightly warm day. As it was a Sunday during a holiday period, everywhere was extremely crowded. At Nezu Shrine, we happened to coincide with an unexpected festival, which the guests also enjoyed. Personally, I was glad that at our final stop, Rikugien Garden, they were finally freed from the crowds and could feel a moment of peaceful relaxation. They also had a unique dining experience at a conveyor-belt sushi restaurant, and made small memories here and there along the way, such as shopping and trying the taiyaki they had been curious about. They seemed very satisfied.

    Title: What Is a Private Day Tour of Matsushima Like? A Licensed Guide's Report The guest was traveling solo from Europe and was visiting Japan for the third time, appearing to know a great deal about the country. Although it was unfortunately raining, the sightseeing cruise departed as scheduled. Until boarding time, we strolled around Godaido, the approach to Zuiganji Temple, and the cave clusters. This guest listened to every explanation with great enthusiasm. At the cruise ticket window, we met the president of the boat company, who said, "There are many groups today. I've told them to give you first-class seats on the third floor," once again providing a complimentary upgrade. Later, when I thanked the president, they gave the guest and me some candy. The pier was quite crowded with people, but boarding was completely stress-free. When I asked what we should have for lunch, the guest said they wanted sushi. Since the guest had also been to Tsukiji, I asked whether we should go to Sushiko, the only sushi restaurant on the main street of Matsushima, and when I checked the menu online, the regular set was 1,500 yen, so I figured it would work out fine. The guest ordered the deluxe set for 3,500 yen. The guest savored it, saying the fish was fresh. Since it uses tuna from Shiogama, I explained that Shiogama is a mecca for sushi. Perhaps it was a little insufficient for the guest, who was of large build? At Kanrantei, I had the guest enjoy matcha with zunda mochi, a Sendai specialty. Since the guest said it was delicious, I mentioned that it is also sold on the third floor of Sendai Station. Then we went to Fukuurajima. We decided to walk along the promenade as far as we could, but since a full loop would take about an hour, we headed back in order to catch the train as scheduled.

    Title: What Is a Private Kamakura Day Tour Like? A Licensed Guide's Report on Tsurugaoka Hachimangu, the Great Buddha, and Enoshima The guests were visitors from Oceania. They had already spent five days exploring central Tokyo before this Kamakura tour. Since they had requested Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine, the Great Buddha, and Enoshima in advance, we visited them in that order. It was a Sunday during a three-day weekend, and everywhere in Kamakura was overflowing with tourists, so much so that even to ride the Enoden line we had to wait for the next train, which made things challenging, but the guests toured energetically. Along the way, I explained the differences between shrines and temples and the influence each has had on Japanese culture, which was well received as helpful preparation for their upcoming trip to the Kansai region. However, at the final destination of Enoshima, it seemed they did not have the stamina left to climb the long stairs, so they rested at a café instead.
