    What Is a Private 6-Hour Nara Tour from JR Nara Station Like? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were visitors from North America who were traveling and sightseeing in Japan. For the pre-tour arrangements, such as deciding on the places to visit, I communicated with one of the guests. The original plan was for the guests to leave Kinosaki early in the morning, meet at Osaka Station, and take an 8-hour tour of Nara by private vehicle departing from and returning to Osaka. However, during our correspondence, the guests felt that "a private vehicle tour between Osaka and Nara wastes time on the round trip and is costly," so in the end we settled on an itinerary of "meet at JR Nara Station at 1:00 p.m. ⇒ sightseeing in Nara ⇒ JR Osaka Station." For this reason, the original tour was canceled, and a "6-hour Nara tour" was newly registered instead. On the day, as mentioned above, the guests arrived at JR Nara Station 30 minutes earlier than planned, so the tour started 30 minutes early. We traveled to Todai-ji Temple by bus, and after enjoying the deer along the approach, we arrived at the Great Buddha Hall. The guests exclaimed in amazement at the enormous main hall and the Great Buddha, and they listened intently to my explanation covering the history since the introduction of Buddhism, asking many questions as well. After the Great Buddha Hall, we walked slowly toward Nigatsu-do and Sangatsu-do (Sangatsu-do was under renovation), and I had them enjoy the stage of the "Omizutori" water-drawing ritual for warding off misfortune. Continuing on, we took a leisurely rest at the foot of Mount Kasuga before walking on to Kasuga Taisha Shrine. This course, surrounded by lush greenery and structures and featuring gentle undulations, is a very pleasant one to walk. At the final stop, Kasuga Taisha Shrine, the vivid vermilion and the main hall were surrounded by trees, including cedars over 1,000 years old, creating a mystical atmosphere. Throughout the tour, both guests shared their impressions, saying, "It was a truly wonderful experience, and we are grateful for the attentive guiding," and they seemed very satisfied with the Nara tour. If I were to raise one point of reflection as a guide, it would be that although the finalized itinerary was a "Nara round-trip, 6-hour" course, it ultimately became "meet in Nara, end in Osaka" without obtaining the approval of [Japan Guide Agency (JGA Inc.)](https://www.j-g-a.org/). Early on the day, the guests departed from Kinosaki Onsen, got off at Osaka Station, stored their large suitcases in a coin locker at Osaka Station, and then arrived in Nara by JR. The reason was that, since they would return to North America the next day via Haneda from Osaka Airport, they planned to stay at a hotel near Osaka Airport after sightseeing in Nara. My thinking was that, since there was ample time for the Nara sightseeing, I would see them off all the way to Osaka Station, help them find their suitcases, and take them to the taxi stand to see them off. In cases like this, must the starting point and ending point always be the same? I would appreciate any advice.

    Title: What Is a Half-Day Private Walking Tour of Tokyo Like? A Licensed Guide's Report on Fukagawa and Asakusa The guests were visitors from North America on an extended trip to Japan. They had arrived the day before, and on the morning of the first day they had already made their own way to the Tsukiji Outer Market to enjoy sushi and fresh fruit, showing what seasoned travelers they were. As we left their accommodation heading for the East Gardens of the Imperial Palace and walked toward the subway station, I suggested watching the "goma" fire ritual at Fukagawa Fudodo Temple. Perhaps drawn by the thunderous taiko drums and conch shells, the guests immediately changed direction and headed to Fukagawa. On the way to Senso-ji Temple in Asakusa, we did not head there directly but strolled through the Kappabashi Kitchenware Street. I believe the guests enjoyed a half-day that was a little different from ordinary sightseeing.

During their stay in Kanazawa, they wished to make a round of the main city sightseeing spots. After a pre-departure consultation, we decided on the order of visits and the destinations while listening to their wishes, aiming to fulfill their strong interest in castle tours, garden tours, and shopping. The beautiful castle walls of Kanazawa Castle Park, a Kutani ware shop, the Kazuemachi Chaya District, the Sakuda Gold Leaf shop, and the Nomura Family Samurai Residence seemed to be especially to their liking.     Since I completely retired from my position at a railway company and started being involved in the tour guide interpreter business, I have experienced almost all types of guiding through FIT, Long Group Tours, Cruises (Shore Excursions), Incentive Tours, Special Interest Tours (Railway Travel, Pilgrimages), Familiarization Tours (Sales Promotion Tours) etc.
    However, I noticed that I am not fully satisfied to only be a general guide who just manages a tour itinerary provided by tour agents/clients.
    High-end guests have sometimes requested me to answer some enquiries that are actually challenging to answer for Japanese nationals. However, I appreciated those because they provided such a challenge and I felt that they wanted to understand my sense of beauty/values as a guide concerning a new culture for them.
    Every time I host my guest I do my best to prepare the most appropriate information based on three travel elements (appetite, logistics, accommodation). Nevertheless, I decided to aim for higher guiding skills after I was motivated by senior guides whose guiding strategies and gestures were particularly impressive.

    What Is a Private Kyoto Walking Tour Like from Gion to Kiyomizu-dera? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were a group visiting from North America. At the meeting point, one of the guests arrived holding a can of beer, and when I asked that beer not be consumed on public transportation or within shrines and temples, they put it away in their pocket, though I did feel a bit apprehensive about how things might go. They arrived in Kyoto in the early afternoon and enjoyed sushi and Japanese cuisine, so aside from the representative of the group who does not drink alcohol, everyone appeared to be pleasantly tipsy. For that reason, I thought it would be good to have them sober up by walking from Gion to Kiyomizu-dera, so I changed the route to walk from Yasaka Shrine to Kiyomizu-dera. By the time we arrived at Kiyomizu-dera, they had worked up quite a sweat and seemed to have sobered up, but as they had become tired, they decided not to go inside Kiyomizu-dera and instead viewed the sunset beside the West Gate before heading down the slope. The sunset was very beautiful, and everyone took photos. In this season, many tourists remain even close to Kiyomizu-dera's closing time to see the beautiful sunset, and I truly felt that this is at the center of overtourism. We walked down Sannenzaka toward the bus stop, and everyone except the representative returned to the Hotel by taxi. The representative wished to visit Kodai-ji and Hanamikoji as originally planned, so I guided that one person. However, rather than going inside Kodai-ji, we walked along Nene-no-Michi and came out onto Hanamikoji. When I explained about geiko and maiko on Hanamikoji, they listened with great interest. We took a taxi from Shijo and I saw them back to the Hotel, ending the tour a little over an hour early. I have guided more than 100 groups so far, and there had never been anyone uninterested in stories about history and culture. This time, however, the response was somewhat lukewarm, and I was reminded once again that if one is not interested in history and culture, Kyoto may not resonate.

    Title: What's a Private Day Tour of Miyajima and Hiroshima Peace Park Like? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were visitors from Europe who were very close and like family to each other. One of them understood very little English, so the other occasionally interpreted for them. Both were very cheerful, and one of them spoke to me with gestures in their own language. Their stay in Japan was about three weeks, all arranged by a travel company, and we first confirmed the itinerary with the travel company's representative. After Japan, they planned to spend about a week in Asia, for a total trip of about a month. They came to Hiroshima from Kobe by bullet train, waking at 5:30 a.m., and the Hotel had prepared a breakfast for the bullet train, but since there was no coffee, they wanted some. So after arriving in Miyajima, I first guided them to a coffee shop. They loved espresso and were very pleased that it was delicious. We were able to visit Itsukushima Shrine at a time that was uncrowded for the season, and at Daishoin Temple there were few tourists, so they could see it in a calm atmosphere. For lunch we went to a place with a nice view and few tourists, and they enjoyed the anago (conger eel) rice bowl. In Miyajima they took many photos throughout. It was their fifth day in Japan, but they still had jet lag and could not sleep well at night, so they took a nap during the World Heritage Sea Route cruise. At the Peace Memorial Park, they knew that the Atomic Bomb Dome was designed by an architect from their region, and they asked many questions. Also, when we folded paper cranes together, they were very delighted and immediately took photos to send to their family back home. Since the museum was very crowded, I asked their preference and guided them quickly through only the highlights. One of the guests preferred to take breaks, so I tried to proceed with rest stops as much as possible, but I was surprised that even after I told them it would take about 40 minutes on foot from the Peace Park to Hiroshima Station, they still wished to walk. We walked together to Hiroshima Station, and since there was time before the bullet train, I asked their preference and guided them to an okonomiyaki restaurant. They wished to change the time of their bullet train ticket, so while they were eating, I went to inquire at the counter, but unfortunately it was a non-changeable ticket. I informed them about the ticket and ended the tour at the okonomiyaki restaurant. They also planned to travel to Okinawa and, since they had a full free day, they asked me to introduce a guide, so I recommended a 6-hour tour in Naha through [Japan Guide Agency (JGA Inc.)](https://www.j-g-a.org/).

    A One-Day Private Tokyo Tour: A Licensed Guide's Report on Tsukiji, Ueno, and Meiji Shrine [Japan Guide Agency (JGA Inc.)](https://www.j-g-a.org/) guides led a private one-day tour of Tokyo for the guests, who were visiting Japan from North America. It was their first time in Japan, and this trip to Japan was to celebrate a special occasion, as one of the guests had strongly wished to visit Japan. The overall trip lasted 14 days, with only part of it spent in Tokyo. After Tokyo, they planned to travel to Kyoto, Osaka, Nara, and Hiroshima before returning to Tokyo and then heading home. The temperature was low, but the tour took place under clear skies. The guests requested to visit the major spots in Tokyo, noting a love of history and that the Tokyo National Museum was a must. First, we went to Tsukiji. I explained the history of Tokyo's fish market since the Edo period, and the difference between Toyosu Market and the Tsukiji Outer Market. As always, it was extremely crowded. The guests asked, "Do all Tokyo residents come here to buy fish?" and commented, "It is crowded, but it does seem there are many tourists." They wanted to try sushi, so we purchased and sampled standing-style tuna sushi. We moved on to Ueno and visited the Tokyo National Museum, which was also very crowded. The guests were interested in Japanese history, especially kabuki, and mentioned they planned to go to the Kabukiza Theatre the next day. I explained an overview of gagaku, noh, and kabuki. Back inside Ueno Station, we had a light lunch at a café. From Nippori Station, we strolled through Yanaka Ginza, which was also crowded with tourists for some reason. The guests said it was nice to see the atmosphere of an old-style shopping street in Tokyo. We stopped by Nezu Shrine, and the guests were delighted to walk through the red torii gates. We moved to Harajuku. At Meiji Shrine, I explained about Shinto, torii gates, Emperor Meiji, why sake barrels are displayed, and why wine barrels are displayed as well. The guests asked, "What kind of religion is Shinto?" and "How does Buddhism differ from Shinto?" After resting at the café terrace at Meiji Shrine, we strolled along Takeshita Street. One of the guests had really been looking forward to this, and purchased a large number of T-shirts, socks, and shoes at various shops. We returned to Shibuya and parted ways in front of the station. The guests commented, "The city is clean and there is no litter on the ground," "I was surprised at how clean the public restrooms are," and "No one is being noisy on the trains."

    Title: What's a Private Tokyo Food and Sake Tour Like? A Licensed Guide's Report on Meiji Shrine, Tsukiji, and Asakusa Body: The guests were visitors from North America. They had arrived in Japan two days earlier, and the previous day they explored Shibuya. Overwhelmed by the sheer number of people, they returned to their hotel early and went to bed early. This morning they woke up at 4:00 and experienced a morning bowl of ramen at a nearby ramen shop. Since the guests enjoy Japanese sushi, sake, beer, and whisky, today's private tour started from Meiji Shrine. We took commemorative photos in front of the "komodaru" (sake barrels), then passed through Takeshita Street on our way to the Tsukiji Outer Market. At the market, the guests enjoyed Japanese beer and dry chilled sake while chatting with the sushi chef and with other diners seated beside them. Afterward, as the guests wished to try some whisky tasting, we moved to Asakusa. I introduced several bars that serve fine Japanese whisky, and in front of the Kaminarimon gate I explained about Nakamise and Senso-ji Temple, after which we took photos and parted ways. Tomorrow the guests plan to join a wagyu tour, and the day after they will travel to Kyoto to join a food tour. This is truly the season of hearty appetites. I hope they thoroughly enjoy Japanese cuisine and drinks.

    What Can You See on a Private One-Day Tour of Tokyo? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were friends visiting Japan for the first time, from North America. The purpose of their trip to Japan was a cruise around Japan departing from Asia. Yesterday morning, the cruise ship called at an international cruise terminal in Tokyo, and they spent the night on board. Yesterday they strolled around Ginza and other areas. Today, their wish was to visit the main sights of Tokyo. They were scheduled to fly home from Haneda Airport in the evening. One of the guests had sprained a leg the day before departure, so they requested a very slow pace of walking while using a cane. The tour took place under overcast skies and slightly chilly weather. First, we went to Asakusa. As always, it was extremely crowded. We started from in front of Kaminarimon Gate. I explained about Sensoji Temple and the history from Edo to Tokyo, the purpose of the five-story pagoda, what Buddhism is, and the differences between Buddhism and Shinto. We took commemorative photos at Kaminarimon, in front of the five-story pagoda, and various other spots. We strolled slowly along the Nakamise shopping street. There were questions such as "What are the major religions in Japan?", "How many Buddhists are there in Japan?", and "Besides Buddhism, what other religions do people believe in?" We met the hired car at Nitenmon Gate and headed to the Yanaka-Nezu-Sendagi area. They wished to see the old townscape of Tokyo. We strolled slowly along Yanaka Ginza. The guests both purchased chopsticks and matcha as souvenirs. They said they liked this kind of townscape. We moved to Nezu Shrine. Despite the rain, many families were visiting the grounds for the Shichi-Go-San celebration. With permission, we took photos. I explained about Shinto, about the torii gates, and about the history of Edo and Tokyo, and while passing through the torii gates, I also explained about Inari shrines. There were questions such as "What kind of religion is Shinto?" and "Why did Shinto arise?" We moved to the East Gardens of the Imperial Palace, entering through Ote-mon Gate. I explained about Japan's history from Edo to Meiji, the Meiji Restoration, why Edo Castle became the Imperial Palace, the history of the imperial family, and the present-day imperial family. There were questions and comments such as "What happened to the shoguns and samurai after the Meiji Restoration?", "Does the current emperor of Japan hold political power?", "Who were the emperors of each era?", and "Can a woman become emperor?" One of the guests, who had an injured leg, waited at the entrance. We moved to Tokyo Tower, visiting only the Main Deck. Walking around the Main Deck, I explained the main buildings. Unfortunately, we were not able to see Mount Fuji. They said they now understood well that Tokyo is a city that spreads out in all directions. There were questions about Tokyo's population, commuting methods, and average salaries. From here, we headed to Haneda Airport while I explained the surrounding scenery. There were comments such as "The city is clean and there is no litter," "Everywhere, Japanese people are all well-mannered," and "I was surprised that the public toilets were so clean."     What Is a Private Walking Tour of Takayama Like? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were visitors from North America who were visiting Japan for the third time, and they already had a good deal of knowledge about the country.
