The request came through a travel agency, so coordinating direct communication with the guests took some effort, but changes such as the number of participants were handled smoothly, and we were able to reach the day of the tour. From our very first meeting, the conversation lively turned to topics about the region the guests were connected with, and the tour proceeded in a warm and friendly atmosphere. Along the way, we touched on the topic of a former president connected to South America, and shared interesting anecdotes about language, such as how the pronunciation of the letter "J" differs between English and Spanish. Through this exchange with the guests, it became a wonderfully international tour.

    Title: What Is a Private Toyosu and Tsukiji Market Tour Like? A Licensed Guide's Report Body: 1. The day of the tour and the guests' reactions Because the market had just reopened after a three-day weekend, there was more tuna than usual and the auctions were especially lively. Watching this, the guests were amazed that a single tuna could be sold off in just five seconds. Right after watching the tuna auction, the guests enjoyed sushi inside Toyosu Market. Having just seen the tuna auction, they savored sushi made entirely from tuna — lean akami, medium-fatty chutoro, fatty otoro, nakaochi, and negitoro — and enjoyed the differences in flavor between the various cuts of tuna. They were delighted, saying, "Every cut was delicious, but I liked the chutoro and nakaochi the best," and "We had sushi in Tokyo the day before, but this is far more delicious." To finish breakfast, they added horse mackerel and sardine sushi that the guests particularly liked. At Tsukiji, when I showed the guests the intermediate wholesalers at Tsukiji Uogashi, we happened to come across a large fresh tuna placed on a cutting board for butchering, and they were astonished at the size of the bluefin tuna seen up close. After that, we strolled through the outer market and the guests tried fresh raw oysters and strawberry daifuku. They were impressed by the size and deep flavor of the Akkeshi rock oysters, and delighted by the wonderful combination of strawberry and sweet bean paste. 2. Other impressions, special notes, and requests The guests' hotel was in Shinjuku Kabukicho, and since it took more than 20 minutes even by taxi to reach Toyosu Market, we arrived just before the auction started at 5:30. For guests staying in Shinjuku or Shibuya, I felt it might be necessary to inform them of this in advance and to plan to start the tour ten minutes earlier.

    What Is a Private Kyoto Day Tour Like? A Licensed Guide's Report on Nijo Castle, Ginkaku-ji, and the Philosopher's Path When we met at the hotel lobby, the guests kindly gave me a T-shirt as a gift, saying they had bought it in Tokyo but it was too small in size. The guests were amazed by the number of wall paintings at Nijo Castle and the many decorations that displayed the shogun's power. They also asked several sharp and insightful questions. Afterward, we took a taxi to Ginkaku-ji. Although it was raining, the guests told me it was the best place they had visited so far, which made me very happy. Because of the rain, there were few people around, and we were able to walk through the garden in a relaxed atmosphere. Finally, I guided the guests along the Philosopher's Path, and after saying our goodbyes, the tour came to an end. They were very kind people, and I am truly grateful.

    Title: What's a Private Evening Kyoto Autumn Tour Like? A Licensed Guide's Report The tour was for a group visiting from North America. They wanted to see the illuminations, so we extended the tour by one hour in advance to visit the evening viewing at Kodai-ji Temple. On the day, the autumn foliage was at its peak at every location, and Kiyomizu-dera Temple in particular was very beautiful, with the sunset glow blending wonderfully with the colored leaves. The illuminations and evening light-up at Kodai-ji Temple were magical, and the guests repeatedly said "pretty." Since one of the guests became quite tired toward the end, the visit to Gion was limited to the area with the traditional townhouses, and the group returned by taxi.

    What's a Full-Day Private Tokyo Tour Like? A Licensed Guide's Report on Tsukiji, Asakusa, and Akasaka The guests were a group of friends visiting from North America. We began at Tsukiji Hongwanji Temple, where I explained the history of Tsukiji and the temple, and then we strolled through the Tsukiji Outer Market. The guests showed great interest in the variety of foods, ingredients, and tableware, and seemed to enjoy shopping. We took the subway to Asakusa, and after explaining the origins of Asakusa and its main buildings from the observation terrace of the Asakusa Culture Tourist Information Center, we passed through Kaminarimon Gate and strolled along Nakamise, fully enjoying the traditional atmosphere. For lunch, we went to a restaurant serving the local specialty monjayaki. The style of having it cooked right in front of us and the atmosphere of the restaurant were well received, and the guests seemed very satisfied. We then took the subway to Hie Shrine in Akasaka to visit. As there happened to be children dressed in kimono for Shichi-Go-San, I explained about the shrine and the Shichi-Go-San tradition. Finally, we took photos in front of the thousand torii gates along the Inari path, and the tour came to an end.

    Title: What Is a Private Walking Tour of Morioka Like? A Licensed Guide's Report on Morioka Castle Park, Nanbu Ironware, and a Sake Brewery The guests were a group who were both very experienced travelers. In Morioka there is a morning market called Mikoda Asaichi, which is beloved as "Morioka's kitchen." Remarkably, it is open from around 5 a.m. to 8 a.m. and operates more than 300 days a year, making it a rare morning market even by national standards. Before finalizing the itinerary I knew that the guests planned to visit this market, but it was the first time I had learned about it myself. The guests had also researched that a bus runs from JR Morioka Station. The only thing I could contribute was to recommend the local dish "hittsumi" (similar to "suiton" in the Kanto region) sold at the market, since it was early morning with temperatures near 0°C. After meeting the guests at the hotel for the first time, we headed on foot toward Morioka Castle Ruins Park. On the way, we checked the location of the steakhouse where the guests had a dinner reservation that day. The castle park was right in front of us. Inside the park, the maple trees were a vivid red and very beautiful. There was also a large ginkgo tree, and the guests were delighted to see the yellow ginkgo leaves. The guests brought up the subject of ginkgo nuts, saying, "Two or three ginkgo nuts are fine, but eating too many is dangerous — you can get poisoning." Hearing this was completely news to me, and I replied, "Ginkgo nuts are one of my favorite foods, and I've easily eaten not just two or three but more than ten at a time, for decades. If that were true, I would have died long ago," which made both of them burst out laughing. (When I looked into it later, it seems it has been medically confirmed that people who drink a lot of alcohol are more prone to symptoms of poisoning.) According to plan, we were supposed to pass through Morioka Castle Ruins Park in about 10 minutes, but in the end we strolled through the park for about an hour. After this, we entered the adjacent Morioka History and Culture Museum. For the first time, at the guests' request, we viewed the paid exhibition on the second floor, which displays the history of the Nanbu domain and treasures of the Nanbu family. The dioramas recreating structures that no longer exist, such as the main keep of Morioka Castle, are exhibits well suited to sparking the guests' imagination. At the shop corner on the first floor, one of the guests purchased an item they were interested in. After the history and culture museum, it was time for lunch. I had informed the proprietress of the lunch reservation spot, "Tea House Liebe," that we would arrive between 11:30 and 12:30, so even though we were about 20 minutes late, there was no problem. Since it was a Saturday, the shop was quite busy. The atmosphere of "Tea House Liebe" was reminiscent of a Showa-era coffee house. One of the guests preferred coffee, and the other preferred tea. After finishing the lunch set, one of the guests headed to a Nanbu ironware shop called "Kamasada." The other guest really wanted to drink delicious coffee at a self-roasting coffee shop called "Hataya," which they had researched themselves, so we called a taxi and went to the coffee shop. I rode along with that guest. Morioka really does have a great many coffee shops. According to plan, we were supposed to visit a different coffee shop in the morning, but because we ran over time at Morioka Castle Ruins Park and the Morioka History and Culture Museum, we were unable to visit the planned coffee shop. The coffee-loving guest had been in a state of "smiling on the face but crying in the heart." When we arrived at the coffee shop, there was indeed a wonderful aroma of coffee. To me, used to drinking instant coffee, even the blend coffee was more than satisfying. The guest ordered two kinds of coffee and was truly satisfied after drinking them. It seems that self-roasting coffee shops have been increasing in Morioka lately. Now, the next destination was the "Asabiraki Brewery," where we had a reservation at 2:30 p.m. We had also arranged to meet the other guest at "Asabiraki." We arrived at 2:25 p.m., and the other guest had already arrived. Here we became a group of three again. That guest greeted the other with the biggest smile of the day. I heard that the guest had purchased a Nanbu iron kettle at "Kamasada." According to the story, the purchased kettle would be delivered a year later. I did not ask the price, but they must have bought quite an expensive kettle. The tea-loving guest had long wanted a Nanbu iron kettle in order to drink delicious tea. The other guest looked happy too. After this came a tour of the sake brewery and sake tasting at "Asabiraki." The shop inside was packed with a group of about 100 visitors. Saturdays really are crowded. We went on the brewery tour with a female staff explainer. We were shown the sake production process in both the handcrafting workshop and the mechanized brewery. The brewery tour finished in about 30 minutes. On the way back to the shop where the sake tasting takes place, there was an explanation about the "sugidama" (cedar ball). Every November, when the new sake of the year is completed, you can see a spherical sugidama made of green cedar leaves. This was my fifth time being taken care of by "Asabiraki," and until now every sugidama I had seen was brown. However, luckily, this year's new sake had just been completed on November 20. Being able to taste freshly made new sake is truly fortunate. In the tasting you can sample several kinds of new sake, and the taste of Junmai Daiginjo is truly exceptional. The guests savored the "Junmai Daiginjo" as well. After finishing the tasting, we ate "Ginjo ice cream." This was also well received. The guests seemed pleased and purchased a half bottle of Junmai Daiginjo sake. The tasting finished in about 30 minutes. Since the guests had a steakhouse reservation at 5 p.m., we took a taxi to their hotel at around 3:40 p.m. This time, due to time constraints, we were unable to stroll through the "Natayacho area" and "Morioka Machiya" that had been included in the plan, but we viewed them from inside the taxi. The walking tour concluded at the hotel at 16:00.

    Title: What Is a Private One-Day Fukuoka Tour Like? A Licensed Guide's Report The guest was a visitor from Oceania. They were traveling through several cities in Japan, with Fukuoka as their final day here, and planned to cross to Busan by jet boat the next day. As it was their last day in Japan, they seemed quite tired, but they listened to the explanations with great enthusiasm and interest and were very proactive in sightseeing. Nanzoin Temple in the morning had been decided from the start, but the rest of the day's sightseeing was left flexible depending on how things went, so I arranged a relaxed schedule with a choice of two options. In the end, we managed to cover the entire planned itinerary. I had been worried because the forecast called for stormy weather, but aside from a brief thunderstorm at Nanzoin, it did not rain. Nanzoin has strict rules regarding tattoos, and while cloths to cover them can be borrowed, the tattooed area was large, so the guest had some difficulty walking while keeping it covered. The cloth kept slipping down, and I felt it would have been better to have informed them in advance to bring something like leg warmers or a longer coat. Regarding tattoos, quite a few younger travelers from abroad incorporate them as fashion, so I want to be careful to give advance notice about this in the future. For lunch, the guest had hoped for yakisoba, but every shop around Hakata Station had long lines, so we ended up going with their second choice, curry. The guest had hoped to see autumn foliage, but it was running very late in Fukuoka. Even so, they seemed to like the atmosphere of Momiji Hachimangu Shrine. There is a Takatori ware pottery kiln right nearby, so we visited there briefly as well. Since it was their last day in Japan, they wished to finish with souvenir shopping, so I showed them the location of the Don Quijote in Tenjin and ended the tour there.

    What Is a Private Kyoto Walking Tour Like? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests came from North America. They had studied Kyoto and Japan very well, and many questions came my way, which was educational for me too. They showed great interest wherever we went, and it took more time than expected, but since the priority was for the guests to enjoy themselves, I paced the tour to match them. In the end we ran quite behind schedule, and even after cutting Ryoan-ji Temple, our final destination, we returned to the Hotel one hour late.

    What Is a Private One-Day Kyoto Tour Like in Autumn? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were a group visiting from North America, and it was their first time in Japan. They were on a one-week trip to Japan during a holiday period. Although it was the autumn foliage season, which is an ideal time for sightseeing, most of today's tour took place in the rain, and we ended up getting quite wet. The guests kindly told me that the area where they live rarely gets rain, so they did not mind it much, but the sky ironically began to clear just as the tour was ending. I took them to Kiyomizu-dera Temple, Yasaka Shrine, Sanjusangen-do, and Fushimi Inari Shrine. The guests said that Sanjusangen-do left the strongest impression on them. Because of the rain, it was unfortunately not possible to see the city of Kyoto clearly from the inner sanctuary of Kiyomizu-dera Temple. It was impressive to hear that one of the guests hopes to pursue a certain profession in the future.

    What Is a Private Kyoto Day Tour Like? A Licensed Guide's Report on Fushimi Inari, Tofuku-ji, and Nijo Castle The tour finished considerably earlier than scheduled. The guests had walked a great deal the previous day and, since they were returning to Tokyo the same day, wished to head back early. Their pace of walking and sightseeing was very quick, so the itinerary moved ahead of schedule. Instead of visiting Kinkaku-ji, we changed the plan to Nishiki Market, and rather than the planned conveyor-belt sushi, we had a late lunch at a fried chicken restaurant. Everyone seemed tired, but we enjoyed a small game in the car that livened things up, and it was a pleasant time. At Fushimi Inari Taisha, we saw the Senbon Torii, the Omokaru-ishi stones, and the Neage-no-Matsu pine. At Tofuku-ji, one of the guests took a shortcut near the entrance, while the others enjoyed the autumn foliage of Tofuku-ji as well as the great halls and the main gate. After viewing Nijo Castle and its garden, the guests wanted to head to a market right away, so I took them to Nishiki Market. They spent a leisurely time at the whisky shop near the entrance. We wrapped things up early and finished at 3:30 pm.
