    What Is a Private Nara Day Tour with a Licensed Guide Like? A Guide's Report The travel agency involved was extremely disorganized: they never even identified themselves as the agency, sent no replies until the day before the tour, and as a result I could not contact the guests until the day before and had no information at all. Late the previous night it turned out that the initially notified meeting place and time were inconvenient given the guests' hotel. The messaging app exchanges to make adjustments did not finish until after 10 p.m. The group was a large party of guests from Asia. They were naturally divided into three subgroups. The middle group and the youngest members stayed together fairly well, but some of the guests kept falling behind, playing with the deer and taking photos. It was quite difficult to manage as a guide, but I had a good impression of everyone. What was interesting was that they spoke a language from their home region that, like another related language, is said by some to have grammar very similar to Japanese. All of the guests followed the same faith, but one of them woke up every morning at 3:30 to do meditation and was very knowledgeable about early Buddhist teachings. It was an enjoyable day. My thanks both to the guests and to the [Japan Guide Agency (JGA Inc.)](https://www.j-g-a.org/) staff. As for the travel agency—a curse doll and a nail! Ha ha.

    Hello! Thank you for choosing Nara! I bet you’ll love Nara. I specialize in Nara because Nara is the unique place where in one day you can cover the history and religions of Japan from the ancient times to the post war era while enjoying rambling in the UNESCO World Heritage park, having communication with lovely deer, surrounded with the beautiful nature.
    I grew up in Nara, went university in Kyoto, enjoyed teaching at high schools and a university in Osaka. The three former capitals of Japan are home to me.
    After retiring from teaching I began guiding so that I can meet various people from various corners of the world with a variety of cultures and backgrounds. Each time I guide, I find it hugely rewarding because I learn a lot from my guests sharing the history, culture and all that I know about Nara, Kyoto and Osaka.
    I used to be a marathon runner, mountain climber and skier though I am not much of them anymore.
    What I especially recommend is to stay in Nara a couple of days and enjoy communicating with friendly deer while visiting UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Nara in early morning, temples and shrines at night are well worth experiencing.

    Title: What Is a Private Matsushima Day Tour Like? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were visiting from North America. Since they wished to spend as much time as possible in Matsushima, we stopped by a bakery near the Hotel to buy bread to eat on the boat. As we were able to catch an earlier train than planned, we decided to take our time exploring Oshima Island. There were photo spots at several viewing platforms, and the guests said the scenery was beautiful and took many photos. Requests to visit Oshima have been frequent lately, and each time I explain in detail the little-known stories about the origins of Matsushima. It is a place where the traces of the anti-Buddhist movement can clearly be seen, and I often share the story that connects it to the present day. The Matsushima pier was as crowded as during peak season, and even the boat operator that is not usually busy was packed with people, so the guests did not eat on the boat. Aboard the sightseeing boat, a staff member gave a firsthand account of the earthquake, which I interpreted simultaneously. After getting off the boat, I suggested we eat the lunch we had bought earlier at the free rest area across from the rest house. This free rest area has no view, but it is a hidden gem where anyone can bring food and relax. While we ate, I listened to their thoughts about this visit to Japan, and they asked for recommendations for after the tour. Since there is nothing castle-like remaining at the Sendai Castle ruins, I suggested it might be better to see Zuiganji Temple in Matsushima, which is said to be a second Sendai Castle, and proposed visiting Zuiganji after Fukuurajima Island. However, since that would mean staying in Matsushima until 15:00 and the tour would end at Matsushima-Kaigan Station, I asked how they would like to proceed. After discussing it among themselves, they decided to go to Zuiganji. Some of the walking paths on Fukuurajima Island were closed. Perhaps some tourists had gone too close to unstable footing and caused a problem. It was a shame, as we had been able to walk there until last year. At Zuiganji, there is a statue of Date Masamune, a central figure in Miyagi tourism, so I also talked about the relationship between the Date family and Zuiganji Temple. We left Zuiganji right on time, and I handed them a map of Sendai and a map of vegetarian-friendly restaurants, then we boarded the planned train and parted ways on board.

    # What's a Private Tokyo Day Tour Like for Repeat Visitors? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were visitors from Oceania. Having visited Japan the previous year and enjoyed it, they returned again this time. On their earlier trip they had toured Kyoto and Osaka, but this time they planned to spend about a week in Tokyo before continuing to Hokkaido in early January to enjoy skiing. Since they had already visited most of the major sightseeing spots, when I met them on the morning of the tour, we discussed and agreed on an itinerary focused mainly on places they had not yet seen. First, we purchased a PASMO card and took the subway and the Yamanote Line, transferring to reach Takanawa Gateway Station. After viewing the uniquely designed station building, we found a mobile robot to stand and ride on right after exiting the ticket gates. The three of us chatted and enjoyed the ride, and one of the guests was thrilled and delighted. Next, I introduced the restaurant floor on the upper level of NEWoMan, a large commercial facility that had recently opened. In one section resembling a botanical garden with fine views, music was added for an immersive experience, and they took many photos. After descending to ground level, I pointed out the explanatory panels of the Takanawa embankment and introduced how this futuristic place is connected to the history of modern Japan. We then walked about ten minutes to Sengakuji Temple, famous for the graves of the Ako Roshi. The guests offered incense at the graves of the 47 samurai. When I explained this event, including the values of the samurai, one of the guests was deeply impressed and repeatedly explained it to the other, who had found it a little difficult to understand. Listening beside them, I could tell it had been understood extremely accurately. One of the guests mentioned that they could relate to the values of the Ako Roshi's loyalty to their lord, and also practiced martial arts. Next, we visited Zojoji Temple and Tokyo Tower, then walked to Azabudai Hills, where by coincidence they mentioned they had visited Azabudai Hills the previous day for about a 15-minute stay. At that time, they had not realized that this commercial facility was right next to Tokyo Tower. We took the Hibiya Line to Roppongi and had lunch first at Roppongi Hills. Among several options I presented, they chose sushi and kept exclaiming how delicious it was. They said there are many sushi restaurants in their home region as well, but that it is completely different from the sushi in Japan. At Aoyama Cemetery, we viewed the foreign section and the grave of Dr. Ueno, which has the memorial stone of Hachiko, then moved on to Tokyo Midtown Roppongi. Being very fond of good food, the guests were drawn to a high-end fruit shop I had not planned to mention, and immediately bought strawberries and a strawberry cake. During lunch, a question had come up about what grated daikon was, so I showed them an actual daikon radish at a supermarket. The guests also found Japanese sweets such as daifuku and, wanting to try them, once put them in the basket, but since they had already bought cake and fruit, they gave up, deciding to come back and try them next time. Finally, at a free table overlooking the garden of Midtown, we all enjoyed the cake we had purchased together.

    Title: What Is a Private Full-Day Tokyo Tour Like? Ginza, Ameyoko, Asakusa and Nezu — A Licensed Guide's Report I guided a group visiting from Oceania. They were a pleasant group who listened attentively to my explanations. Since they had visited Tokyo Tower the previous day, we decided to end the tour in Ginza, and as we had extra time, we stopped by Ameyoko. However, it was packed with year-end shoppers, which unfortunately left the guests even more tired. Along the way, they purchased sanshoku dango and lip balm. I introduced them to the Kintaro candy shop in Nezu, where they bought some candy and wished to give a tip to the elderly shop owner, but he politely declined. I had looked up a halal restaurant in Asakusa in advance, but since the guests had dinner plans, they said they did not need lunch, so we did not go. As they were not used to walking long distances, after viewing Sensoji Temple from the Asakusa Culture and Tourism Center, some of the guests said they could walk no further, so they called an Uber and returned to their hotel. After that, I continued the tour with the remaining guests. One of the guests wanted to buy various flavors of Kit Kat, so I took them to Don Quijote. They also reacted to melon bread and enjoyed eating some. Since the group was somewhat large, a pointer with a mascot attached in place of a flag was very useful. In Ginza, we walked toward a fried sandwich shop that one of the guests had seen on social media, but there was a long line, so we gave up. We returned to Chuo-dori to go to Uniqlo, and although it was still early, the guests said they wanted to explore on their own from there, so I introduced them to Kimuraya and we parted ways in front of the shop. It was scheduled as an 8-hour tour, but everyone seemed tired and did not wish to visit other places, so it ended two hours early.

    Title: What Can You See on a One-Day Private Tokyo Tour from a Cruise Ship? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were a group visiting Japan from Europe. It was everyone's first visit to Japan. They arrived by cruise ship. Today's Tokyo tour took place while the ship was docked at the Tokyo International Cruise Terminal. The cruise ship was scheduled to depart this evening. They were also planning a day trip to Kyoto while the ship would be docked at the Port of Kobe. Their request was: "Today, we would like to see as many of Tokyo's major spots as possible." Since everyone's native language was different from English, communication was a little challenging. It was a clear but chilly day for the tour. First, we headed to Tsukiji. We strolled leisurely through the area. I explained "the history of Tokyo's fish market since the Edo period" and "the difference between Toyosu Market and the Tsukiji Outer Market." There were also questions and comments such as "Can we see the tuna auction?" "Do all Tokyo residents come here to buy fish?" and "It's crowded, but there really do seem to be a lot of tourists." They purchased and sampled "tuna sashimi," and also bought "wasabi peanuts" as a souvenir. We moved on to Asakusa. We started from the front of Kaminarimon Gate. I explained "Senso-ji Temple and the history from Edo to Tokyo," "what the five-story pagoda is for," "what Buddhism is," and "the difference between Buddhism and Shinto." We took commemorative photos at various spots, including in front of Kaminarimon and the five-story pagoda. We strolled leisurely along the Nakamise shopping street. There were questions such as "What are Japan's major religions?" "How many Buddhists are there in Japan?" and "Besides Buddhism, what religions do people follow?" One of the guests also mentioned that their relatives sometimes visit temples abroad. After this, at the strong request of one of the guests, we went to the "Samurai Museum." I waited outside. They commented, "I am very interested in the philosophy and culture of the samurai. I really enjoyed it." Next, we went to Akihabara. I explained "the origins, history, and current state of Akihabara." They purchased character goods as a souvenir. After this, we went to the Imperial Palace. The East Gardens were closed, so we strolled around the Nijubashi Bridge area. They commented, "It's hard to believe such a vast space is in the city center — what a wonderful landscape." There were also comments and questions such as "The city is so clean, with no litter on the ground." "There are no homeless people to be seen." "Aren't there dedicated bicycle lanes?" "Is Tokyo safe to walk around late at night?" and "Why aren't there trash cans on the streets?" I saw them off at Tokyo International Cruise Terminal Station, and we parted ways.

    Since I have been mainly involved in the financing business in the United States for a long time, I think I am able to provide interpretation and translation services related to business and finance.
    I am a certified CPA in the United States.

    What's a Private Tokyo Day Tour Like with Kids? A Licensed Guide's Report on Asakusa and Tokyo Tower The guests were a group visiting from North America. One of them was a big fan of the golfer Jumbo Ozaki and was saddened by his passing, having even gone to watch him play in the past. The group was looking forward to riding the Tokyo subway and visiting Disneyland the following day. One of the guests remarked, "The elevators in Japan are so clean. Back home they always smell of urine. And there are public restrooms everywhere." I replied, "In elementary school, children are trained to clean the facilities themselves." The week before, the group had gone skiing in Niseko and enjoyed eel, tonkatsu made with Meissen pork, and wagyu steak nigiri sushi. The day before, they had visited an izakaya in Ameyoko. In Asakusa, the group enjoyed premium sushi at a sushi restaurant. Some of the guests seemed tired by lunchtime, but they regained their energy at Tokyo Tower and were delighted to peer through the glass panel in the main deck that reveals the ground far below. I teased them, saying, "Some people actually fell and died here — during construction, that is. Their graves are at Zojoji Temple, which you can see right below us." The souvenir shops in Foot Town were full of things that fascinated the younger members of the group, and since the shopping showed no sign of ending, we parted ways there.

    What Is a Private Family Kyoto Tour Like in Winter? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were a group visiting from North America. Some of the guests appeared tired from walking after finishing the stroll around Fushimi Inari. The plan had been to visit Nanzen-ji, but the guests asked whether there was a closer sightseeing spot, so we decided to go to Sanjusangen-do instead. However, due to winter hours, admission had already ended at 15:30, so we were unable to enter. I suggested the nearby Kennin-ji, but some of the guests were tired and wished to return to the hotel. The guests said they would take a taxi back to the hotel, even though it was still early, so we parted ways in front of Sanjusangen-do. Although it had not been part of the original plan, I regretted not having checked the winter hours in advance. The guests said it was not a problem, but I apologized. They mentioned they would be skiing in Niseko starting the next day, and I hope they enjoy it.

    Can You Do a Private One-Day Tour of Tokyo's Main Sights? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were a group of visitors from Oceania. It was everyone's first visit to Japan. They had arrived at Narita Airport the previous night and taken a taxi to their hotel. This time they were on a two-week trip in Japan. They planned to stay in Tokyo for three days, then travel around Kanazawa, Toyama, Kyoto, and Osaka, before returning home from Kansai Airport. They said, "Today we'd like to visit the main spots in Tokyo." One of the guests had difficulty walking (with surgery scheduled soon), so there was a request to "please proceed slowly, and use elevators and escalators wherever possible." It was a fine day, though somewhat chilly, and this was the setting for the tour. First, since they wanted "Shinkansen tickets," we went to the travel concierge at Ueno Station. While there, we also purchased Suica cards for everyone. From here, we first moved to Asakusa. We started from the front of Kaminarimon Gate. One of the guests waited at the Starbucks near the gate. I explained "Sensoji Temple and the history from Edo to Tokyo," "what the five-story pagoda is for," "what Buddhism is," and "the difference between Buddhism and Shinto." We took commemorative photos at Kaminarimon, in front of the five-story pagoda, and at various spots. We strolled slowly through the Nakamise shopping street. They asked, "What is the main religion in Japan?" "How many Buddhists are there in Japan?" "Besides Buddhism, what other religions do people follow?" and mentioned that some of the guests occasionally visit temples in North America. We moved to the East Gardens of the Imperial Palace. One of the guests waited at the rest area near the entrance. I explained about "Japan's history from Edo to Meiji," "the Meiji Restoration," "why Edo Castle became the Imperial Palace," "the history of the Imperial family," "World War II and the Tokyo air raids," and "how the stone walls were built." There were questions and comments such as, "What happened to the shoguns and samurai after the Meiji Restoration?" "Does the current Emperor of Japan have any political authority?" "Who is the next Emperor?" "Can a woman become Emperor?" and "How many members of the Imperial family are there in total?" After this, they said, "We really want to have sushi for lunch," so we went to a sushi restaurant in Shibuya. They seemed satisfied. They commented, "There are sushi restaurants where we come from too, but they are expensive and lower in quality." We moved to Harajuku. At the guests' request, we strolled through the crowded Takeshita Street. They purchased a few T-shirts. From here, we moved to Shibuya. We actually crossed the Scramble Crossing. There were questions such as "Why do so many people gather here?" and "Why did it become famous?" We also took photos in front of the Hachiko statue. There were comments and questions such as "The streets are clean and there's no litter," "There are no homeless people to be seen," "Is it safe to walk around late at night?" and "Why are there no trash cans on the streets?" I saw the group off at Shiodome Station, and we parted ways.

According to our email exchange, they were supposed to arrive by Shinkansen, but they came on a local line instead, so we were unable to meet at the Shinkansen exit. Fortunately, we had set up a messaging app in advance, so we were able to get in touch and meet up. On the day, because it was the year-end period, the main hall (hojo) of Nanzen-ji was closed, but Konchi-in was open, so we entered, and the guests were delighted with its beautiful garden.

    What's a Private One-Day Kyoto Tour Like from Nijo Castle to Sanjusangendo? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests this time were a group visiting Japan from Oceania. The itinerary and destinations were arranged in advance with one of the guests. Their desired destinations were clear from the start: Nijo Castle, Nishiki Market, Gion, and either Kiyomizu-dera Temple or another temple. They wanted a compact itinerary since the destinations were close to one another. As for the temple, they were concerned about the crowds at Kiyomizu-dera, so I suggested Sanjusangendo Temple, which is relatively close to Gion, and they agreed. On the day, we were blessed with good weather. The temperature was not too cold, making it perfect conditions for a walking tour. I met the guests on time at the Hotel, exchanged greetings and introduced myself, briefly explained the overview of the destinations, and then set off on the tour. We first headed toward Nijo Castle, which is about a 10-minute walk from the Hotel (or so I intended), but I ended up walking in the opposite direction after leaving the Hotel and had to hurry back, so it took more than 20 minutes to reach Nijo Castle. I caused the guests some inconvenience right from the start and apologized politely, but the guests kindly said, "We love walking, so don't worry about it." This became the biggest point of reflection for me this time. After arriving at Nijo Castle, while touring the site, I explained in considerable detail the roughly 800 years of samurai political history and the relationship between the Emperor and the Shogun. Some of the guests showed great interest in this and seemed to understand it well. I later learned that one of the guests was studying "Japanese History" as an elective subject at school and listened to my explanation with great interest. Next was a visit to Nishiki Market, which was truly packed with the usual inbound tourists as well as many Japanese customers preparing for the year-end. Even so, the guests showed interest in various ingredients, tried a "quick tasting" of sake, and had a great time. I had planned to have lunch inside Nishiki Market, but since we couldn't wait for a long time, we decided to head to Gion to find a place for lunch. The guests wanted to eat ramen for lunch, so we went to a branch of "Kamukura," which has been popular recently. We were able to get in after about a 10-minute wait, and once we ordered, we didn't have to wait long to eat. The guests especially loved this ramen, and they were satisfied, saying, "This is the best I've ever had." Refreshed after lunch and a break, the guests also seemed to enjoy strolling through Gion, especially Hanami-koji. Finally, at Sanjusangendo Temple, they exclaimed, "This is amazing!!" in front of the thousand and one statues of Kannon Bodhisattva. Although the tour had some mishaps from the start, when I said my farewell greetings at the end of the guided tour, they said, "You were a wonderful guide, and we had a great time." Reflecting on my mistake, I expressed my gratitude for being able to guide such a lovely group pleasantly, and we parted ways.
