    What's a Private Family-Friendly Tokyo Tour Like? A Licensed Guide's Report on Akasaka, Asakusa, Shibuya, and Harajuku I guided a group visiting from North America. As on a previous occasion, the members of the group got along wonderfully, and it was a heartwarming day from start to finish. The trip's destinations had been arranged partly through communication with an agent. We began in Akasaka-mitsuke, where I first explained a traditional Japanese-style izakaya with a sugidama (cedar ball), then introduced a recommended restaurant, Akasaka Umaya, to start the tour. During the subway ride to Asakusa, I spent the whole time talking with one of the guests, who worked in design and kindly showed me some of their creative work. In Asakusa, we started by having everyone poke their faces through the hole in the white sculpture "Green Planet" for photos. For some reason this delighted one of the guests, who ended up enjoying it even more than the younger members of the group and had a photo taken while putting their head through (the group truly got along wonderfully). At Nakamise, some of the guests became absorbed in hand cream and bought so many I lost count. While waiting, I chatted with another guest about how it all "runs in the genes," sharing the kind of relatable observations one often makes. There happened to be a white heron dance at Senso-ji today, but as the group did not show much interest, it was fortunately a good way to save time. When we had lunch at Azuma, I learned that one of the guests usually cooks at home, and I was amazed to see photos of their beautifully plated dishes, which looked truly professional and creative (the photos of my own cooking that I showed in return felt so plain by comparison that I was almost embarrassed). On the Ginza Line to Shibuya, I talked with one of the guests about high school life, and another guest happily took photos, saying how nice it was. Everyone was thrilled by the crowds at the Shibuya Crossing and by a wedding procession at Meiji Shrine, filming videos of both. While waiting at one point, I showed some of the guests an old Japanese instant cup noodle commercial and asked, "What do you think this commercial is for?" then explained, "It's actually a playful jab at English education in Japan." This went over very well, and I was asked to send the YouTube link by email. Finally, since the younger members of the group all play soccer (their photos playing soccer looked incredibly cool), they wanted to buy soccer gear, so we spent a good while at the KAMO shop in Harajuku, where everyone made their purchases before heading to Takeshita Street. The goal there was an animal cafe, and the group debated between a micro-pig cafe and a Samoyed cafe. We parted ways after I received the kind words, "Today was perfect, including the weather," and "Thank you." They were a truly wonderful group to guide.

    What's a Private Kyoto Tour of Arashiyama and Kinkaku-ji Like? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were visitors from Europe. When I had guided visitors from the same region before, one guest had mentioned wanting to see the bamboo grove near Kodai-ji, saying that bamboo does not grow in their home region. When I asked if that was really true, they said that even if it existed, it would be quite thin. We traveled to Arashiyama by the Hankyu line. One of the guests seemed to love the view of the mountains and river from Hankyu Arashiyama Station to Kameyama Park, and took photos enthusiastically. Since I am not very familiar with their home region, I asked whether there were mountains there, and they replied that even if there were, they would be about 150 meters. I remarked that this was about the same height as Monkey Park. Because traveling to Kinkaku-ji would take quite a while, I had arranged in advance that we would enter Tenryu-ji from the north gate and view the buildings from the outside, which the guests agreed to. The garden was full of colorful flowers, which the guests especially enjoyed. I suggested that they might like to sit on the bench by the Sogen-ji garden pond and meditate, but they said they would try it if there were few people, though since it was crowded it was not necessary. We then moved to Kitano-Hakubaicho by the Randen tram. The guests photographed the beautiful interior of the tram. At Kitano-Hakubaicho we tried to transfer to city bus 205, but it was so full that we let about two buses pass. Kinkaku-ji seemed less crowded than the previous day, so I think we were able to enjoy the visit relatively at our own pace. When I called out "yoisho" at the entrance to Kameyama Park and on the slope up to Kinkaku-ji, the guests seemed to remember it and found it amusing. Once we had finished the itinerary, I asked what they would like to do in the afternoon, and they said they wanted to return near their hotel and have lunch, so I decided to see them off to the nearest bus stop. The person managing the bus stop was not the type to actively call out to passengers, so I decided to wait together with the guests until they boarded the bus. The photo was taken in the bamboo grove near the north gate of Tenryu-ji.

    Can You Do a Private Hakone Day Tour with Young Children? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were a group visiting from Oceania for their first trip to Japan. The weather was fine, and on the way to Yumoto, Mount Fuji was clearly visible, so I anticipated it would be a good tour where the guests could enjoy views of Mount Fuji. I met them at the Hotel and presented a two-piece Mount Fuji tumbler glass gift set in a mist-box package. Since some of the guests were traveling with a very young child, I brought a single-lens reflex camera and told them I would take many photos throughout the day and give them the SD card at the end. At the Hakone Open-Air Museum, the guests were delighted, enjoying the various installations, and I took many photos there. As some of the guests were very small, I had purchased two "pero pero chocolate" candies and two "Puccho" sweets each the day before and gave them as gifts. For lunch, I went to the sushi restaurant I had visited the previous week, but they said they could not accommodate our group size, so we went to a Japanese restaurant and ordered tendon, katsudon, and beer. Because the guests came from a French-speaking background, some of them did not speak English, and English communication with the group was limited. Since I speak a little French, I spoke to the guests using some French as well. Due to the large number of foreign tourists, it took 50 minutes to board the ropeway at Sounzan. There was also an announcement that the ropeway would suspend operations if the wind became any stronger, and I worried about a repeat of the previous week, but luckily we were able to ride. At Owakudani, Mount Fuji was beautifully visible without a single cloud, so I took many commemorative photos and was also able to capture close-up shots of Mount Fuji with a telephoto lens. I bought two bags of black eggs for 1,000 yen as a gift, and we all sat together eating them while looking at Mount Fuji. The guests also enjoyed the pirate ship and took in the scenery from the deck. Since the Hakone Checkpoint had just closed for the day, we only viewed the exterior before heading back. The Mount Fuji glasses, sweets, black eggs, and SD card came to about 4,600 yen in expenses, but since bringing joy to the guests is a guide's duty, I do not mind at all.

    Title: What Is a Private Hiroshima Guided Tour Like? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests enjoyed the azaleas at Shukkeien Garden and had fun feeding the carp. Upon arriving in front of the Atomic Bomb Dome, they said they had a strong interest in world history and were very curious about the atomic bombing and the reasons Japan started the war, so I explained why Japan began the Pacific War, the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima, and its consequences. They then asked questions about my family and why the United States dropped two atomic bombs, on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. In front of the memorial cenotaph, they were interested to learn that a few years ago President Obama became the first sitting U.S. president to visit Hiroshima and gave a speech there. After visiting the museum, they said, "Thanks to your explanation, I understood the contents of the museum well. But it is so tragic! Why don't the survivors resent America?" so I explained that the survivors came to wish, more than hatred, for friendship and a world that cherishes each individual life. I then explained the transportation to Miyajima, their next destination, and we parted ways.

    What Can You See on a 6-Hour Private Walking Tour of Tokyo? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were visitors from North America. They requested to see as many sights as possible during a 6-hour tour. Since they planned to visit the Imperial Palace and a Japanese garden on their own, they did not need guiding for those spots. They were interested in historical sites but not in anime and similar topics. Although heavy rain fell during the latter half of the tour, we energetically visited the sights mentioned above. The guests seemed very pleased to have enjoyed the many different sides of Tokyo. On the way back from Asakusa, exactly 6 hours had passed, and since they were going to return to their accommodation on their own, we parted ways at Suidobashi Station.

    Title: What's a Full-Day Private Walking Tour of Kyoto Like? A Licensed Guide's Report At Sanjusangendo, the guests were amazed by the many Senju Kannon statues inside. They were also surprised to see arrows from the traditional Toshiya archery event still lodged in the overhanging ceiling. We took a bus to Kiyomizu-michi and climbed the slope up to Kiyomizu-dera Temple. On the way back down the approach, the guests bought ice cream and sweets, then we walked through Sannenzaka and Ninenzaka to Maruyama Park and Yasaka Shrine. We planned to have lunch at a sushi restaurant, but many people were waiting, so during that time we strolled around Hanamikoji. After having lunch at the sushi restaurant, I introduced some Japanese games. We took photos at the Super Mario display in the Takashimaya department store, and I showed them the basement food section and other areas before heading to Nishiki Market, where I gave explanations. Fortunately, we were also able to enjoy shamisen music. After that, I guided them all the way to the front of Nishiki Market and concluded the tour.

    What Is a Private Miyajima and Hiroshima Peace Park Tour Like? A Licensed Guide's Report I guided a group of guests from North America. We began the tour in a relaxed atmosphere, sharing local stories and my own experience washing dishes at a Japanese restaurant. Everyone was very cheerful, and it was memorable to see them enjoy the day in their own unique ways at Miyajima, such as singing together with the deer and placing coins on the heads of the Jizo statues. At the Peace Park, the guests did not seem to prefer a heavy atmosphere, so I focused on guiding them along the river where a few cherry blossoms still remained, allowing them to enjoy a calm and gentle time. We also touched on the topic of the G7 Hiroshima Summit two years ago, and I was able to hear some interesting perspectives on how President Biden is evaluated in North America. It was a bright and enjoyable tour from beginning to end.
