    Title: What Is a Private Nikko Tour Like? A Licensed Guide's Report on Kegon Falls and Lake Chuzenji The guests had studied the Tokugawa shoguns and samurai society in great depth, which made our conversations very lively. In particular, we had an interactive and unending discussion about samurai customs, the sense of what was considered normal at the time (things unimaginable today), how superstitions were understood, and how those superstitions influenced people's behavior, and the time passed in the blink of an eye. We also went to Oku-Nikko in the morning, so the morning light was excellent and Kegon Falls looked beautiful. The weather was also fine (completely calm with no wind at all), the surface of the lake was like a mirror, and the guests were moved by the beauty of the mountains reflected in Lake Chuzenji and eagerly pressed the shutter many times. They seemed very passionate about photography. With the help of the weather, the tour went very smoothly.

When I was a company employee, I lived abroad for 5 years in Los Angeles, 11 and a half years in Washington D.C. and 2 and half years in Brussels.     What Is a Private Tsukiji, Imperial Palace, and Asakusa Walking Tour in Tokyo Like? A Licensed Guide's Report I guided a group of friends visiting from Europe. The tour was originally scheduled for one date, but at the guests' request after checking the weather forecast, it was moved to the following day (having a flexible schedule worked out well). It was their third day in Japan, but due to fatigue and rain they had not moved around much beyond Shibuya, so we followed the planned course of Tsukiji, the Inui-dori path, and Asakusa. At Tsukiji, rather than eating anything, they seemed to enjoy Honganji Temple and Namiyoke Shrine more than anything else. Since they eat a lot of eggs, we took a commemorative photo in front of the egg monument at Namiyoke Shrine, and they visited Honganji Temple twice, carefully examining the Buddhist altar. The Inui-dori path, on the other hand, was extremely crowded despite it being a weekday (my previous two visits had not been busy at all), and we unexpectedly had to wait over an hour, which caused some inconvenience for the guests. When I explained the giboshi ornaments at Wadakura Bridge, one of the guests even joked, "They should just place a giboshi on top of a traffic cone instead of doing a security check (laugh)," but with the sun coming out it became quite tough. Beforehand, taking a break at Starbucks to use the restroom and happen to have a drink turned out to be a good call. That said, the Inui-dori path itself, with its wonderful combination of cherry blossoms and the castle, was thoroughly enjoyed, which was fortunate. We arrived in Asakusa well past the scheduled time, had lunch at Asakusa Azuma, and then, to save time, walked the usual route in reverse — heading to the main hall of Sensoji Temple first, then Nakamise and the Kaminarimon Gate. They were very drawn to the traditional buildings and customs. I also learned they had a strong interest in washi paper, so we stopped by Kurodaya in Asakusa. At the end, the guests told me, "When you come to Copenhagen I'll be your guide, and when you come to Stockholm she will guide you, so just let me know," and we parted ways in front of Kyukyodo in Ginza. After Tokyo they planned to travel around western Japan by cruise, and I hope they can enjoy the cherry blossoms in each region.

    Title: What Is a Private One-Day Kyoto Garden Tour Like? A Licensed Guide's Report Today I guided guests visiting from North America. Their trip included Tokyo, Nikko, Kyoto, and Naoshima. The guests showed a keen interest in Japanese gardens, and following my earlier advice, they had visited Katsura Imperial Villa and Ginkakuji the day before. Today the weather was clear and perfect for sightseeing, and because we started early, Kiyomizudera was not too crowded, which was fortunate. The cherry blossoms were beginning to bloom here and there, and it was very beautiful. Nijo Castle was also not too crowded thanks to good timing, and the cherry blossoms within the garden were lovely as well. Kinkakuji was relatively crowded, but since the guests were not interested in souvenirs and the tour progressed very smoothly, I added a visit to Daisenin at Daitokuji Temple. The guests were very pleased.

    Title: What Can You See on a One-Day Private Tour of Tokyo? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were visitors from North America. Since they were starting a cruise the following day, they wished to see as much of Tokyo as possible in a single day. They were surprised by the crowds in Asakusa and Ueno, but cheered at the sight of the cherry blossoms in full bloom. Since the goal of this tour was to see the cherry blossoms, this was wonderful. After the Shibuya Scramble Crossing, we bought and ate sushi and fruit sandwiches at a department store food hall. It was their first time trying a fruit sandwich, and they were very pleased. After Meiji Shrine, we visited department stores in Ginza and then parted ways.

    Title: What's a Private Kobe Day Tour Like? A Licensed Guide's Report on Akashi Kaikyo Bridge and Nankinmachi The guests were from North America and were both strong walkers, so we were able to move smoothly throughout the day. At each spot, they asked many questions. They listened very attentively and with great interest to the guide's explanations. Their questions were not limited to each spot, but also included many about Japanese history, culture, and customs. At each location, they purchased various souvenirs. At a local bakery I recommended near the Akashi Kaikyo Bridge, they bought various sweet buns and enjoyed eating them while walking during the transfer, seeming very satisfied. At the final spot, Nankinmachi, they were delighted to find the statue of their zodiac animal, the Sheep, and were pleased. I presented them with a drawstring pouch handmade by the guide's family member, and they were very grateful. At Nankinmachi, they expressed a wish to stroll around on their own and have something to eat, so we parted ways with about 30 minutes remaining. Incidentally, since there is a free shuttle bus running from near Nankinmachi to the Kobe Port Terminal, where the cruise ship the guests were traveling on was docked, I explained this and told them the boarding location, and they commented that it was "very convenient and helpful." Both were very polite and friendly, which I appreciated. Their beautiful, clear English was easy to understand, almost like that of an excellent English teacher, which was also valuable for me as a guide.

    This is (Mr.) Yama, greeting from Kobe, Japan.
    I would like to warmly welcome you to Japan this time. I am from the city of Kobe, which is of course, well-known for very tasty Kobe Beef . You can taste
    real genuine Kobe Beef here. Kobe is also called “Home of Japanese Sake” with lots of Sake breweries, and I recommend you would visit those breweries
    if you have any interest in Japanese Sake as well as one aspect of Japanese cultures. Of course, you can have tastings of various kinds of Sake there.

    Whenever during the tour, I always try to make it safe, pleasant and comfortable for all of the guests, which is my first priority. I am very much confident
    that you can have a pleasant and unforgettable experience in Japan. Just tell me about your preference; what you would like to like to see, have, know
    and eat and so on. Particularly, I hold the license for cooking qualified by the government here and maybe, I can reply you for questions related to the
    foods here. In this respect, I strongly recommend you would try not only famous Japanese cuisine such as Sushi, Tempura or Suki-yaki but some
    Japanese traditional local foods, like Tako-yaki, Okonomi-yaki and Kushkatsu. They are sometimes called the soul foods of Japan. Here is the brief
    explanation for these three foods.

    1) Tako-yaki
    Tako-yaki is a snack filled with pieces of octopus in a batter of flour , egg and soup stock. You can call them octopus dumplings or balls. “Tako” means
    octopus and “yaki” means grilled or broiled.
    2) Okonomi-yaki
    This word Okonomi-yaki means “cook just as you like” and you can use whatever you like as toppings, such as beef, pork, shrimp, squid and octopus.
    Okonomi-yaki is round shape and just like pancakes or pizza in shape mainly made from egg, flour and water.
    3) Kushi-katsu
    Kushi-katsu is skewered cutlet or deep-fried foods on a stick. “Kushi” means skewer and “katsu” means cutlet. Various kinds of foods are used for
    ingredients such as beef, pork, chicken, shrimp, squid, octopus and lots of kinds of vegetables.

    Actually, the western Japan including Osaka, Kobe and Himeji is called as “Home of such local soul foods”. You should give it a try and I am sure
    that you like them very much.

    I sincerely hope that I can be your tour guide this time in Kobe, Osaka and Himeji. If my guests said to me after the tour, “I have had a very good

    Title: What Can You See on a Private Day Tour of Tokyo? A Licensed Guide's Report on Shinjuku Gyoen, Yanaka, Meiji Shrine, and Asakusa The guests were people with whom there had been very little prior communication, so there was some concern beforehand. I was able to meet them at the hotel lobby as planned. I showed them the itinerary in the lobby for the first time, and since they had already visited Shibuya, one of the planned stops, we changed that portion to Yanaka. At Shinjuku Gyoen, the cherry blossoms were in full bloom, and the guests were delighted. At Meiji Shrine, they appreciated the solemn atmosphere and the religious background of Shinto, and purchased amulets and other items. The downtown atmosphere of Yanaka lifted their spirits even further, and they enjoyed strolling and sampling street food. Because moving around Yanaka took some time, we ended the visit to Sensoji Temple at the Kaminarimon Gate.

    Who am I?
    I am a Licensed Guide Interpreter at an age of 61.
    I got an early retirement from 36 yrs of the employment in a Japanese financial sector.
    I hope I can attend to you with the Japanese politeness, hospitality and smile.

    What can I be expected?
    I would like to introduce the photogenic sites, the indigenous experiences
    and good Japanese local food around Tokyo, Hakone/Mt Fuji.

    Title: What's an Early-Morning Private Kyoto Tour Like? A Licensed Guide's Report on Kiyomizu-dera, Sanjusangen-do, and Fushimi Inari The guests were a group visiting from North America. Some of the guests had been to Japan several times before and were quite familiar with Kyoto, while others were visiting Kyoto for the first time. It was a 4-hour tour starting early at 7:00, during which I took them to Kiyomizu-dera, Sanjusangen-do, and Fushimi Inari Taisha. Because it was still early morning, Kiyomizu-dera was not very crowded, and the guests were able to drink from the Otowa Waterfall. The cherry blossoms were about 30 to 50 percent in bloom, which made for the perfect timing. At Sanjusangen-do, some of the guests seemed especially interested, as they had experience with archery. By the time we reached Fushimi Inari, it was already extremely crowded. Some of the guests had previously visited Kiyomizu-dera and Sanjusangen-do, but this was their first visit to Fushimi Inari, and even though it was very crowded, they commented that Fushimi Inari was their favorite. The rest of the guests also said that Fushimi Inari was the highlight.

    Title: What's a Private Walking Tour of Asakusa, Tokyo Station, and the Imperial Palace Like? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were visiting Japan for the first time from Europe. We met at a hotel in Asakusa. As one of the most photogenic spots in Tokyo, we first visited the old shopping arcade beneath the Asakusa Tobu Station, then took photos along the Sumida River with the Skytree and the Asahi Beer headquarters in the background. At Tokyo Station, after showing them the platform for the Shinkansen to Kyoto, we visited the food section in the basement of a department store, where they purchased an assortment of strawberries and various fruits. Moving to the Marunouchi side, we took photos in front of the Tokyo Station building, then went up to the observation deck on the 6th floor of the KITTE building. As the guests wished, we visited the East Gardens of the Imperial Palace from the Otemon Gate. Since the Inui Street of the Imperial Palace happened to be open to the public, we entered, but as it led in the opposite direction, we decided to turn back partway and were escorted out by an Imperial Household Agency staff member through the Kikyomon Gate. We then viewed the Nijubashi double bridge of the Imperial Palace. We took a taxi to Ginza 4-chome, where I explained about Ginza and suggested visiting Itoya to buy stationery as a souvenir. For lunch, I guided them to LION in the station basement before we parted ways. Although it rained all day and the weather was poor, the weeping cherry blossoms both inside the East Gardens of the Imperial Palace and along the outer moat were beautiful, and the guests were very satisfied. After we parted, I had lunch alone at a ramen shop. I had planned to give the guests an SD card with many photos I had taken with my camera, but realized I had forgotten to hand it over. Although an hour had passed, I returned to LION and looked inside the restaurant, where I found they were still dining, so I presented the SD card containing the photos. They tried to pay for the cost of the SD card, but I declined, saying it was Japanese hospitality. For Kyoto, I had suggested that they visit Nijo Castle and the Kyoto Imperial Palace.

    What Is a Private Tokyo Tour of Meiji Shrine, Asakusa, and Ueno Like? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were a group from North America. They contacted me the day before the tour, and we pushed back the start time by one hour. At Meiji Shrine, I began with an overview of Japanese history, the difference between Buddhism and Shinto, and the history of Meiji Shrine, and while walking I explained the torii gate, the sake barrels, and the masugata layout, before we offered prayers at the main hall. The guests showed great interest in the customs and rituals observed at shrines. In Asakusa, from the rooftop of the culture and tourism center, I explained the townscape and the history of Asakusa. Afterward, walking from Kaminarimon Gate through the Nakamise shopping street, the guests enjoyed eating Japanese sweets such as kinako dango and arare, and drew omikuji fortunes. After praying at the main hall, we moved to Ueno Park, viewed the cherry blossoms, and concluded the tour.

    What's a Private One-Day Tokyo Tour Like Before a Japan Cruise? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were visiting Japan for the first time from Europe. The day after the tour, they were going to enjoy an approximately two-week cruise around Japan departing from the Tokyo International Cruise Terminal. They mentioned that this would likely be their first and last Tokyo tour, but they were remarkably strong walkers. After strolling from the Sakuradamon Gate of the Imperial Palace to the Nijubashi Bridge and the Main Gate, I explained about the Inui Street passage of the Imperial Palace, which had not originally been planned. The guests showed strong interest and expressed a wish to see it, so they experienced a stroll along Inui Street. They took many photos. They mentioned having a large garden at home and were very knowledgeable about plants and trees. After that, we passed through the East Gardens and returned to Tokyo Station, which was the originally planned route. For lunch, as originally requested, we headed to the Tsukiji Market and tried sushi at a sushi restaurant. However, since they could not eat large amounts, they ordered shrimp, tuna, and salmon roe rolls à la carte and enjoyed them. They seemed to find the food very delicious. After lunch, since it was judged that the Tokyo Skytree could not be seen from Asakusa due to the weather, we skipped Asakusa and went to Roppongi. After viewing the National Art Center, I guided them to the boarding platform of the Toei Oedo Subway Line, which returns to the Hotel without any transfers, and we said goodbye. When I told them to please come to Japan again, they said that the jet lag becomes harder as one gets older. The day after the tour, they sent me a thank-you email saying they had not expected to see so much in such a short time, which made it a rewarding tour for me as a guide.
