    What Is a Rainy-Day Private Hakone Tour Like? A Licensed Guide's Report on Hakone Shrine and Lake Ashi The guests were a group visiting from North America. We toured in heavy rain, and although I recommended indoor sightseeing such as museums, the guests wanted to do outdoor sightseeing, so I guided them around Hakone Shrine and the area near Lake Ashi. Unfortunately, the ropeway was suspended due to the bad weather, so we did not go to Owakudani, which they had hoped to visit. They were especially interested in matters related to religion and had many questions about Japanese temples and shrines. Since they were heading to Kyoto in the evening, I explained how to purchase tickets and passes at Odawara Station.

    In February 2017, I registered with Kanagawa prefecture as a National Interpreter Guide in English. Since then, I have guided mainly in Tokyo and Kamakura and Hakone in Kanagawa Prefecture, except during the corona virus epidemic. In addition, in February 2022, I became a Hakone Adventure Travel Guide certified by the Hakone DMO. I am especially good at walking and hiking tours. Here are my recommendations for Tokyo and Hakone.

    Tokyo – Imperial Palace
    The Imperial Palace is formally known as the Edo castle, the stronghold of the Tokugawa Shogunate. This place has been the residence of emperor of Japan since after the Meiji Restoration in 1868. The palace with a compound of 1.15 million square metere consists of the main palace where ceremonies and functions are held, the resindence of the Emperor and Empress, and the East Garden containing the ruins of Tensyukaku Donjon. The Chowadn Hall, located in the main Imperial Palace, is noted for the New Year’s visit by the general public to the Imperial Palace.

    Tokyo – Asakusa
    Asakusa is a famous sightseeing spot in Tokyo, which is reminiscent of the Edo period. This district has been flourishing as a temple town of Senso-ji, the oldest and the largest temple in Tokyo, Kaminarimon, or “Thunder Gate,” the outer gate of the temple is very famous as a landmark of Asakusa for its huge red lantern. Both domestinc and foreign tourists flock to thie venerable temple and the shopping arcade called “Nakamise” in the compound, the best place to buy traditional Japanese souvenirs in Tokyo.

    Hakone – Owakudani Valley
    One of the most popular sightseeing spots in Hakone. There are exploded craters, which were formed by the last phreatic eruption of Hakone Volcano about 3,000 years ago, and activer sulfur and hot stream vents. White smoke envelops the desolate ground to this day, and you can feel the intensity of a active volcano. This place is also a popular viewing spot for Mt. Fuji.

    Hakone – Jinja Shrine
    Hakone Jinja Shrine is famous for its Shinto shrine archway of Peace, which was founded in its current location in 757 based on a revelation of the priest Mangan. Manga was famous priest who trained in strict ascetic practices and pacified the nen-headed dragon that lived at the bootm of Lake Ashi, and history is still handed down to people today.

    Hakone – Check Point
    Tokugawa shogun placed 53 sekisy (facility of inspection) on major roads across the nation to defend Edo (current Tokyo). Hakone Sekisho was one of the largest and was thought to be important among them. Hakone Sekisyo was placed on the current location in 1619, during an early period of Edo Era. One of the main roles of sekisho was to control “incoming guns and outgoing women”, which means to prevent wapons from being brought into Edo and wives and children of feudal lords from fleeing from Edo. However, Hakone Sekisho did not inspect “incoming guns” andseverely inspected “outgoing women”. Sekisho which operatef for about 260 years furing Edo Era, was dissoloved in the next years of 1868, when government changed.

    Title: What's a Private One-Day Tour of Tokyo Like? A Licensed Guide's Report on the Imperial Palace, Senso-ji, Tsukiji, and Shinjuku Gyoen The guests were visiting Japan for the first time from North America. They kindly showed me photos of a snowy home. They were staying at a hotel and we met at Tokyo Station. Although the Imperial Palace had not been included in the itinerary during our advance planning, since it was only about a 10-minute walk from Tokyo Station and they might not have another chance to visit Tokyo, I guided them to Nijubashi and the Main Gate. After this tour, they planned to enjoy a theme park for several days and then travel to another destination in Asia to visit a friend. In front of the Main Gate of the Imperial Palace, a changing of the guard by the Imperial Guard was taking place, and they took photographs. At Senso-ji Temple, they both tried drawing omikuji fortunes and were delighted to receive "good luck" and "small good luck." In Asakusa, I suggested that ramen could be an option for lunch, but there was interest in having sushi at Tsukiji, so we went via Ginza to the Tsukiji Market. After walking around the outer market, one of the guests mentioned eating fish but not raw fish, so in the end they had chicken ramen at Toritoh in the food court of Tsukiji Uogashi. At Shinjuku Gyoen, we strolled along a route from the Sendagaya Gate to the Okido Gate and enjoyed viewing the cherry blossoms. Although many of the blossoms had already fallen, quite a few trees could still be enjoyed, and the azaleas that were just beginning to bloom were also beautiful, which impressed them and led to many photographs. Finally, I guided them to a Nintendo shop (inside Shibuya Parco), which was of interest. They were overwhelmed by the long line in front of the cashier and did not make a purchase. After looking around the store, they decided to head back, so I saw them off at the ticket gate of Shibuya Station.

    Tour Itinerary

    • 12:05 (Since the Komagatake Ropeway was suspended due to strong winds) We headed from Hakoneen to Owakudani by bus. (The meeting place was the Hotel.)
    • 12:50 Due to traffic congestion, it took twice as long to arrive at Owakudani. The winds at Owakudani were even stronger.
    • 13:44 (Since the Hakone Ropeway was also suspended due to strong winds) We took a bus to Kojiri.
    • 14:15 When we descended to Lake Ashi, the wind was not that strong, and thinking that the pirate ship surely wouldn't be suspended, we walked to Togendai only to find that the pirate ship was also suspended. It also turned out that although the Hakone Sightseeing Cruise was operating a round trip from Motohakone Port, it did not come as far as Kojiri.
    • 14:30 We headed to Hakone Shrine by taxi.
    • 14:50 Arrived at Hakone Shrine and worshipped.
    • 15:40 After worshipping, we walked to Motohakone, and after arriving we took a break at a cafe with coffee and sweet bread.
    • 16:40 We walked along the old Cedar Avenue highway toward Hakone Onshi Park.
    • 17:00 Arrived at Onshi Park and strolled around.
    • 18:00 We left Onshi Park and returned to Motohakone.
    • 18:30 We guided the guests to the Hotel shuttle stop and dispersed.

    Title: What Is a Private Hakone Day Tour Like When the Ropeway Is Closed? A Licensed Guide's Report When the ropeway and the pirate ship cruise that had originally been planned were suspended due to strong winds, it took some effort to adjust the itinerary. However, the guests did not seem particularly disappointed, and they told me they were satisfied because they were able to see a beautiful Mount Fuji, which had been their main goal. The guests were a group of three. Some of them could hardly speak English, so at times another guest interpreted for them (from English into Spanish). At Owakudani, perhaps because the scenery was so unusual, the guests took many photos even in the strong wind. At Hakone Shrine, they bought ema votive tablets, wrote their wishes, and hung them up. At Onshi Park, the cherry blossoms happened to be at their best, and they enjoyed this as well.

    What Is a Tokyo Tuna Auction and Tsukiji Private Tour Like? A Licensed Guide's Report 1. The tour experience and guest reactions The guests were a group visiting from Oceania. They had signed up for the tuna auction tour because of an interest in Japanese fish cuisine. At the tuna auction, the guests were amazed that a single tuna is sold in about five seconds. They enjoyed watching the dealers' hand signals and tracking the bidding prices, saying things like "This one is 4,000 yen, that one over there is 5,000 yen." After watching the auction, they had breakfast at a sushi restaurant. Here, one of the guests mentioned, "Actually, one of us has never eaten sushi before," and the other admitted, "I'm not usually interested in raw fish." This made me a little nervous. However, the guest was very satisfied with this first-ever sushi experience, and seemed to especially enjoy the lean tuna sushi and the salmon roe sushi, which was a relief for me as the guide. They were particularly impressed by the way the salmon roe bursts in the mouth. While salmon is eaten in Oceania, they said that eating salmon roe is not a common habit there. At Tsukiji, we happened to come across an intermediate wholesaler I am well acquainted with, who had just placed a fresh bluefin tuna of about 180 kg — freshly won at auction — onto the cutting table. Since there were no other tourists around, I quietly asked the staff, "Would it be okay to take a photo?" and received permission for "just one photo," which delighted the guests. (Photography is normally prohibited at the intermediate wholesalers.) Since the guests were full from the sushi, we focused our visit at Tsukiji mainly on the intermediate wholesaler shops. One of the guests cooks and showed interest in Japanese kitchen knives, listening intently to explanations about them for a while. However, they seemed to already own several knives and avoided an immediate decision, saying, "Let me think about it." 2. Other impressions, notes, and requests Today the number of tourists watching the auction was about two-thirds of the peak, so the guests were able to observe relatively calmly. As I expect the number of visitors to gradually decrease from now on, I intend to make sure that guests joining the tour can fully enjoy the auction.

A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were visiting from Europe on their first trip to Japan, having traveled from Tokyo, Kanazawa, and Takayama before arriving in Kyoto the previous day. At Nijo Castle, the guests were deeply impressed by the Karamon Gate, the wall paintings of the Ninomaru Palace, the carvings of the transoms, the scene of the return of political power to the Emperor in the Grand Hall, and the Shogun's Shiroshoin study. We also discussed at length the history of the Tokugawa shoguns and their relationship with the Emperor. In the garden, the guests were moved and took many photographs. At Fushimi Inari Shrine, although it was extremely crowded with tourists, the guests were impressed by the history, the fox statues, and especially the vermilion torii gates, and took many photographs. At Sanjusangendo, the guests were impressed by the history, the 1,001 Buddhist statues, and the statues of the 28 guardian deities. Afterward, I saw the guests off at Gion-Shijo, and the tour came to an end.

    What Can You See on a Private Day Tour of Shibuya and Harajuku in Tokyo? A Licensed Guide's Report The guest was visiting Japan from North America. The guest came to Japan for travel and joined the tour on a day of free time. During our conversation, in addition to the original request, the guest expressed a wish to buy gifts, so in the first half of the tour I guided them to the Pokémon Center in addition to the famous spots in Shibuya, and to character goods shops along Takeshita Street in Harajuku. It was a pleasure to see how happy the recipient was over the phone. The guest also commented that they would love to visit here again next time. I was impressed that the guest asked a wide variety of questions—such as the difference between Shinto and Buddhism and the current state of world affairs—and listened with genuine interest. The guests had actively researched the places they wanted to visit and requested traditional Japanese food for lunch. Because they loved plants and flowers and wished to see a Japanese garden, they specifically requested Daitokuji Temple in Kyoto. Since each sub-temple at Daitokuji charges a separate admission fee, I confirmed what they most wanted to see. As they were hoping to see a garden with a rock garden as well as bonsai, I suggested visiting Obai-in and Hoshun-in. The guests especially enjoyed Daitokuji Temple and took their time exploring it. The local set-meal lunch we stopped for also matched their wishes perfectly, and they were very pleased with it.

    Title: What Is a Private Kanazawa Day Tour Like? A Licensed Guide's Report on Kenrokuen, Kanazawa Castle, and Gold Leaf Craft Body: The guests were visiting Japan from Europe. Since one of the guests followed a vegan diet, I had reserved a vegan lunch in advance. The weather was fine and warm, making it a perfect start for sightseeing. The cherry blossoms at Kenrokuen Garden and Kanazawa Castle were very beautiful, and the falling petals in the breeze were truly lovely. The guests were delighted. Some of the guests had difficulty walking and needed a little more time. They loved the vegan lunch and immediately posted a review. They also greatly enjoyed the gold leaf application experience. It was a simple activity of placing gold leaf stickers on a tray and small dishes, but I was glad they enjoyed it. By the time we reached the Nagamachi district, some of the guests were quite tired. At the Nomura Family Residence, shoes have to be removed, so some of the guests waited on a bench in front of the entrance rather than going inside. Many guests wear lace-up sneakers, and it is common for some to find taking shoes on and off troublesome. Afterward, they wanted to rest over coffee, so we stopped at a cafe for a break before taking the bus together to Kanazawa Station, where we parted ways upon arrival.

    Title: What's a Private Cruise Port Day Tour of Miyajima and Hiroshima Like? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were visiting from North America on a cruise ship and were traveling around Japan together. They had already visited places such as Tokyo and Kyoto, and the tour began as I listened to their impressions of those trips. We first visited Miyajima, where they were delighted, saying it was a very beautiful place. They also listened attentively to my explanations. Along the Omotesando shopping street, they enjoyed themselves by purchasing Miyajima T-shirts and eating grilled oysters. They said they had wanted to do this kind of thing in Kyoto but had not been able to, and so they thoroughly enjoyed the Omotesando street in Miyajima. Afterward, we went to Hiroshima, ate okonomiyaki, and then toured the Peace Memorial Park and visited the museum. Although it was raining, the guests listened intently to the explanations, and together we talked about peace.

    What Is a Private Cherry Blossom Season Tour in Japan Like? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were very friendly, and we spent an enjoyable time full of jokes and laughter. I am also grateful that they showed deep interest in everything I explained. Since it was a last-minute request, I believe they had been really looking forward to the tour. The cherry blossoms were still blooming enough to look almost in full bloom, so they were moved by every view. It was their first time in Japan, and they truly loved the country, saying they would want to visit hundreds more times in the future. After the tour, they wanted to enjoy the spring-only food stalls at the park I had first introduced, as well as dining and shopping along the shopping street, so I guided them to the food stalls and we parted ways there.
