The assignment was confirmed last August, but the booking came not from the guests themselves but from a local travel agency. Immediately after the assignment (last August), I sent my initial message, but the contact details only included the travel agency's address, so I believe it reached only the agency and not the guests. Even into April this year, I received no reply to my initial message, so without any information about the guests' desired destinations, interests, dietary needs, or walking ability, I had no way to prepare an itinerary. On April 8, I asked [Japan Guide Agency (JGA Inc.)](https://www.j-g-a.org/) to help prompt communication with the guests. Finally, the following day (April 9), a reply from the travel agency reached me. In summary, it stated that such inquiries were unnecessary and that I should simply carry out the sample itinerary shown on a booking platform, and that although the guests' personal phone number had been provided, I should avoid calling in advance and contact them only on the day of the tour. From these responses, I felt that the agency did not understand the aim of carefully building an itinerary based on the guests' own conditions and requests so that they could enjoy a comfortable tour. However, by this point there was less than a week until the tour date, so I had no choice but to create an itinerary based on the information available at that time and past guiding experience. In the end, without any confirmation from the guests themselves, I finalized the plan as follows: Otsu City (Mii-dera Temple, Lake Biwa Canal, lunch) → Omihachiman (viewing the Omi merchant townscape) → Hikone (visiting Hikone Castle), and the day arrived. On the day, the weather around the destinations in Shiga Prefecture was unfortunately poor, with light rain in the morning and heavy rain in the afternoon. In the morning I arrived at a hotel near Kyoto Station and met the guests. After brief greetings and confirming the itinerary, we set off right away by private car. The driver was very experienced and knowledgeable about sightseeing around Lake Biwa, offering various pieces of advice that were a great help. Fortunately, at the first destination of Otsu City it was not yet raining, so we were able to stroll through the spacious grounds of Mii-dera Temple without umbrellas and view the interiors of several halls, giving the guests a real sense of the world of Buddhism. However, it was here that I first learned that one of the guests had undergone joint replacement surgery on the ankle and hip a few years ago, could not walk for long periods, and had difficulty going up and down long staircases. This ended up having a major impact on the rest of the itinerary. After visiting Mii-dera, we had lunch at a nearby Japanese restaurant, and around the time we moved on to the Lake Biwa Canal, the rain I had been worried about began falling in earnest. From then on, we did all our sightseeing under steady rain with umbrellas, adjusting the itinerary as we went. By the time we moved from Otsu to Omihachiman, the rain was growing heavier, so we cancelled the stroll through the Omi merchant residence district and instead visited the Nishikawa Family Residence, an Important Cultural Property that also serves as a museum. As for the final visit to Hikone Castle, the main attraction was climbing up to the castle keep, but due to one guest's difficulty walking, we gave up on climbing the keep. Instead, I spent time carefully explaining and guiding them through the museum near the entrance. On the way back, since some traffic congestion was expected, we left Hikone a little earlier than planned and arrived at the hotel in Kyoto exactly at the scheduled time of 6:00 p.m. Even though I was never able to obtain detailed information about the guests in advance, and the tour ended in a downpour, we managed to complete it safely while making significant changes to the itinerary. The guests may have been left with some degree of dissatisfaction, but with the driver's help I tried to do my best in each situation. In any case, this was a case that made me keenly feel the danger and risk of communicating only through the travel agency. What Is a Private Kanazawa Walking Tour Like? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were visiting Japan from Oceania. One of them had studied a little Japanese in high school and could speak simple greetings and self-introductions. They were interested in Japanese culture, especially matcha and the tea ceremony, and were looking forward to a simple tea ceremony experience on this occasion. Title: What's a Private Day Tour of Nara Like? A Licensed Guide's Report on Kasuga Taisha, Todaiji, and Gangoji The guests were visitors from North America. They had already been to Kyoto many times, but this was their first visit to Nara. This trip to Japan was a celebration trip. The guests are big fans of Japan, and said that whether it is Tokyo, Osaka, or Kyoto — and especially Tokyo — even though it is one of the world's great metropolises like major cities elsewhere, it is completely different: clean, without litter, essentially no homeless people, people who are kind and friendly, food that is delicious with its own cultural character, a safe environment, trains that run on time, and air that does not smell. Different in every essential respect. They understood this to be a unique national character, but wondered where such a spiritual disposition comes from — is it Shinto, or Buddhism, or is there something else, and if so, what? They said they wanted to reflect on such questions while looking at various places. Yesterday they spent a full day touring Kyoto, and today, in Nara, the birthplace of Japanese history, we spent the whole day discussing the worldviews of Buddhism and Shinto, Obon and its related traditional culture, and how Onmyodo and feng shui relate to Japanese history and people's daily lives — the foundations of Japanese society and life. As it turned out, we talked about these things all day at Kasuga Taisha, Todaiji, and Gangoji. It became a rather understated and deep conversation, but they listened attentively and I enjoyed it too. In Kyoto, perhaps talking about wabi-sabi while looking at a dry landscape garden might have helped them understand even better. Unfortunately it rained all day today, and the rain grew heavier in the afternoon. The insides of our shoes became soaked and we could no longer walk, so partway through we gave up and went to a 100-yen shop to buy socks, then returned to Kintetsu Nara Station and parted ways.

Title: What's a Full-Day Private Tour of Tokyo's Gardens and Meiji Shrine Like? A Licensed Guide's Report It was quite a warm day for mid-April (the high was perhaps around 25°C), but the guests energetically visited three places: Hamarikyu Gardens, the East Gardens of the Imperial Palace, and Meiji Shrine (there is little shade anywhere except Meiji Shrine). I asked them to stay well hydrated and explained the types of drinks available in the vending machines. Although I think it was hot, the guests did not complain at all, and in fact told me they had a wonderful time. At Hamarikyu Gardens and the East Gardens, most of the cherry blossoms had already fallen, but there were several late-blooming cherry trees of different varieties, and the guests took photos with great interest. The azaleas were also beginning to bloom. For lunch, the plan had been to simply have a drink and something like bread at a coffee shop, but just beforehand one of the guests said they wanted something a bit more filling, and it was suggested that as long as certain dishes were left uneaten there would be no problem, so we found a ramen restaurant and went in. However, some of the guests ultimately found ramen difficult and ordered plain white rice and rice with pickled greens instead. Since the guests spoke among themselves in a language I did not understand, I could not follow their conversation, but I reflected a little that deciding quickly based on the opinion of just one person in the group could be risky. At Meiji Shrine, the guests listened with great interest to my explanation of why Emperor Meiji came to be enshrined as a deity.

I first assisted them with purchasing Suica cards at Shinjuku Station. After that, at Shinjuku Gyoen, they admired the late-blooming cherry blossoms and the Japanese garden, and were delighted by such a green, spacious oasis in the middle of the city. At the next stop, Meiji Shrine, I first explained Japanese history, the difference between shrines and temples, and the connection between Emperor Meiji and the shrine. Then, walking along the approach, I talked about the sake barrels, the masugata, and the couple camphor trees, before we paid our respects at the main hall. After purchasing an amulet at the shrine office and receiving a goshuin stamp, the guests showed a keen interest in the shrine. After walking down Takeshita Street, we had lunch and moved to the East Gardens of the Imperial Palace. Strolling through the grounds while I explained the shoguns, feudal lords, and Edo Castle, we took a rest while admiring the azaleas in the Japanese garden. At Ueno Park, at the Tokyo National Museum, I gave an overview of Japanese history and culture, after which the guests appreciated works from various eras. In Asakusa, after explaining the Kaminarimon gate and Nakamise, the guests paid their respects at the main hall, and the tour ended after walking through shopping streets such as Shin-Nakamise.

What Is a Private Kyoto Day Tour Like? A Licensed Guide's Report on Arashiyama, Nishiki Market, and Fushimi Inari The guests came to Japan from Europe. They had visited Japan several times before. Because of some physical considerations, the tour proceeded at a slow pace from the start. There were also several stops along the way, including some longer breaks and time spent shopping, which meant that moving between locations took more time than expected. In the morning the weather was cloudy with light drizzle, which did not significantly affect the tour. However, from around Nishiki Market the rain became quite heavy, and it was raining considerably by the time we reached Fushimi Inari at the end. Lunch at Nishiki Market also took some time, so even though it was an 8-hour tour, we were only able to visit four locations. At JR Inari Station, I had a station staff member fix the SUICA card so it could be used, and then the tour ended. Afterward, the guests rested at a coffee shop near Fushimi Inari. Their hotel room was apparently too small to relax in comfortably. The photo was taken at the bamboo grove in Arashiyama.
