    What Is a Private Tokyo Family Tour Like? A Licensed Guide's Report on Meiji Shrine and Sushi The guests were a group visiting from Oceania. One of them had visited Japan several times for travel, but for the rest it was their first visit to Japan. At the hotel, I gave an overview of Japan and Tokyo along with some historical background. During a walk through Meiji Shrine, which still had the quiet atmosphere of the morning, I explained the Japanese view of religion and the annual events associated with shrines and Buddhist temples. We happened to encounter a "hatsumairi" (first shrine visit), allowing the guests to experience Japanese culture firsthand. However, since food culture is something that cannot be fully conveyed by explanation alone, we had lunch at a long-established sushi restaurant, where the guests enjoyed authentic sushi.

    What Is a Private One-Day Tokyo Walking Tour Like? A Licensed Guide's Report on Asakusa, Yanaka, and Harajuku The guests were a group visiting from Europe. They had arrived in Japan the previous day and planned to stay for about two weeks, traveling to Hakone, Hiroshima, Osaka, and Kyoto after Tokyo. I guided the group through Asakusa, Yanaka, Nezu Shrine, Meiji Shrine, and Harajuku (Takeshita Street). Because the group was dealing with jet lag during an intense heat wave, I paid close attention to preventing heatstroke throughout the tour. At each sightseeing spot, I made sure to give explanations in the shade whenever possible. The guests were aware that Tokyo would be hot and had brought hats and neck coolers, and they stayed hydrated throughout, so we were able to complete the full itinerary without any problems. At first I was a little concerned about whether some of the guests would take an interest in traditional sites, but the whole group listened attentively to my explanations together. At Takeshita Street, our final stop, they purchased character goods at a shop. I saw the guests off at their hotel, and we parted ways there.

    A Private Kumamoto Tour Focused on Miyamoto Musashi Sites: A Licensed Guide's Report One of the guests had previously read "The Book of Five Rings," so I included Reigando Cave and the Shimada Museum of Art, both connected to Miyamoto Musashi, in the itinerary. Since these two locations are in inconvenient areas, I chartered a taxi for two hours. As one of the guests had also practiced martial arts, they showed interest in the exhibits on bushido at Kumamoto Castle and Suizenji. The group also observed the structure of buildings and even a multi-level parking garage with great curiosity, things that people usually just pass by. One of the guests had experience appraising Kumamoto oysters, and researching Kumamoto oysters in advance revealed a fascinating background. I also inquired with the prefecture's fisheries division, but received a reply that they were not being served during this season. It was a shame, but thanks to the guests, I was able to learn one more piece of information that I can share with future clients.

    In 2016, I obtained the National Guide Certification and have been guiding mainly tours in Kumamoto City, but also in neighboring areas such as Aso, Takachiho, and Unzen. I have learned a lot from guiding and have had the invaluable experience of interacting with guests from many different countries. I love being a guide and also I think guiding job is physically wonderful because it is based on walking. I am interested in history, especially samurai culture. In Kumamoto, you can see the footprints of the castle lords, the Kato and the Hosokawa families. The Kato family is famous as strong warlords, while the Hosokawa family is famous as intellectuals who developed the culture of the samurai. Also, Kumamoto is one of the few cities in the world where all water is supplied by groundwater. Please enjoy Kumamoto’s history, culture, and water.

She took our interests into consideration and showed us a special Shinto temple and let us drink from the "long life" spring. She also explained how to do a Shinto prayer and took us for a walk where the gods lived. We had lunch at the perfect place–we wanted to eat good seafood–the seafood was fresh and the service fast and friendly. The fresh grilled scallops were the best I've tasted. Also, we got to try horse sashimi which is a specialty of Fukuoka I think. It was very good. We also toured Kumamoto Castle and the surrounding areas. We ended the tour at a restaurant that served the Kumamoto Wagyu special beef–from black cows! I'd highly recommend having Mieko guide you!

    Title: What's a Full-Day Private Tour of Tokyo Like? Meiji Shrine, Shibuya, Harajuku, and Akihabara — A Licensed Guide's Report I guided a group of guests visiting from Europe on a full-day private tour of Tokyo. This was their first visit to Japan. At the hotel meeting point, we confirmed the itinerary and their transportation pass (JR Pass) before starting the tour. The guests listened very attentively from the very beginning of our visit to Meiji Shrine, which was quiet with few worshippers and felt almost like a private visit. However, given the intense heat, at the Imperial Palace we limited our visit to the Nijubashi bridge at the main gate, and I verbally recommended options such as the free tours. Traveling by train while avoiding rush hour felt heavenly. The guests mentioned they would also be visiting Kyoto and Osaka, so I showed them photos of the Namba area and Kiyomizu-dera. When I mentioned the peace memorial exhibition museum located just a few minutes on foot from their hotel in the city, they showed interest, and they were pleased that I could provide related information. A visit to Starbucks at the redeveloping Shibuya crossing was much appreciated. In Harajuku, the guests were amazed by the street food and the sheer number of shops, and I was able to guide them smoothly to a matcha cafe in Omotesando. One of the guests, a university student, did not go into the cafe, so I waited and chatted with them. On Meiji-dori in Harajuku, one of the guests went into a guitar shop and browsed happily. Our final stop was Akihabara. Even on a weekday, the Radio Kaikan was bustling. Time ran out just as one of the guests was enjoying playing games at the Konami arcade. It was a shy but consistently calm and composed group throughout.

    Title: What Is a Private Kyoto Day Tour Like with a Wheelchair User? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were a family group visiting Kyoto. After I proposed an itinerary and they made their selection, the group let me know that one of the guests would be using a wheelchair, so I asked the taxi driver to be accommodating. At Fushimi Inari Taisha, we used the elevator and I guided them all the way to the inner shrine. Since no one was waiting at the Omokaru-ishi stone, everyone in the group had a chance to lift it. At the bamboo grove, after taking a family photo in front of Okochi Sanso Garden, one of the guests went by taxi to the Tenryu-ji parking area while I guided the others on foot. At the parking area, the guest returned to the wheelchair, and I guided the whole group through the Sogen-chi Garden at Tenryu-ji only. At Kinkaku-ji, some of the guests walked to the parking area, while I guided the wheelchair-using guest and another guest by turning back at the entrance partway through. For lunch, the guests wanted ramen, so we had lunch at a ramen restaurant with parking that the taxi driver recommended. At Kiyomizu-dera, the taxi took us as far as the point accessible for a passenger using a wheelchair, and since our return looked likely to be after 15:30, we ended the taxi service. (I had explained the extension policy in advance.) The guests enjoyed shopping and taking photos on Sannenzaka as we walked down the slope, then returned to the Hotel using a U-bed taxi, ending the tour. They seemed very satisfied.

    What Is a Private Kyoto Day Tour Like for a Family Group? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were a group visiting Japan from Asia. Some members of the group had roots in South America and Europe, and they currently reside in Asia. The meeting point was set for Kyoto Station, but since they were staying at a hotel in Shin-Osaka, they came to Kyoto by JR in the morning. They had originally planned to take the "Haruka" express, but by mistake boarded a local train on a conventional line. I was a little concerned about whether we would be able to meet reliably, but when a train pulled into the platform at Kyoto Station, I caught a glimpse of a face that turned out to be one of the guests. We were able to meet successfully on the platform at Kyoto Station. I was impressed by how well some of the guests looked after the younger members of the group. Basically two of them each pushed a suitcase. They seemed to have no complaints at all, and I thought it was remarkable how naturally they handled everything. In the photo taken in Arashiyama, they are the ones on either side. During this photo, one of the younger members was taking a nap and did not join. Along the way, movement took longer than expected because some of the group needed extra time. Still, I managed to guide them to three places as planned. I saw them off at Kyoto Station, ending the tour.

    Title: What Can You See on a 4-Hour Private Tour of Tokyo? A Licensed Guide's First-Day Report The guests were a group visiting Japan for the first time from Europe. They had first spent four days in Okinawa and arrived in Tokyo the day before, where they would be staying for several days. Since this was their first day in Tokyo, they had booked a 4-hour guided tour, wanting to learn how to use public transportation and to understand the culture and history of Tokyo, which is how the above itinerary came about. When asked, "Tokyo and Okinawa are quite different, aren't they?", I replied that regional differences exist in every country. At Asakusa, the grounds were slightly harder to walk through, as preparations were underway for the fireworks festival the next day. Some of the guests were interested in shopping, while another preferred to stay in the shade and not move around much, partly due to the heat. I encouraged everyone to stay hydrated. At Koishikawa Korakuen Garden, I explained the history from the Edo period to modern Tokyo while in the shade. After that, from the observation deck of the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building, I gave an overview of the general layout of the city. I handed over a Tokyo Travel Guide and explained the main candidate destinations to visit. Finally, at the station travel concierge in Shinjuku Station, the guests purchased a SUICA card, but since they did not have much cash on hand, they were only able to load 1,000 yen (effectively 500 yen). I demonstrated how to recharge the card in practice. Although I had explained it thoroughly in advance, it was only at the end that they finally understood that SUICA works the same as cash.

    I had worked in the international business scene for over 40 years and traveled to North America and European countries over 1000 days.
    After I retired from the business, I traveled to most of the major sightseeing spots in all 47 prefectures in Japan.

    My guide is starting from a brief history of the site where I am going to guide. I usually add a briefing about Japanese culture based on religions, such as Shinto Shrine and Buddhist temples. A geographic background behind the history is also important.
    My course includes 4 to 5 (in 6 hours) sites from the following depending on where I will pick the guests up;

    – Ueno Park
    – Nezu Shrine
    – Imperial Palace outer park
    – Tokyo Central Station, Marunouchi historic district

    – Hama Rikyu Garden
    – Shinjuku Gyoen Garden
    – Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building
    – Roppongi
    – Meiji Shrine
    – Harajuku & Takeshita Street
    – Shibuya
    – and Any of your interest.

    I am happy to introduce Japanese Manga/Anime cultures such as Akihabara, Nakano Broadway and Ghibli related sites.
    Travelling along the JR central line where guests can stopover at major animation studios (it is not accepted to visit the inside). The majority of animation studios such as TMS Entertainment, SUNRISE, A1 Pictures etc. are located in this area. Suginami Animation museum, Studio Ghibli and Ghibli Museum are also located.
    Guests can feel old houses in the Spirited Away scene in the Edo-Tokyo Open Air Architectural Museum.

    I can also provide a pilgrimage to the sacred place (shooting location) for the Shinkai Makoto animation movies such as Your name, Weathering with you, and Suzume.

    Another interesting feature is to visit authentic Japanese style pub meals such as Yakitori, Karaage, and Sushi etc.
    Asakusa Hoppy Street, Ameyoko Street, Yurakucho, Shimbashi, Shinjuku Golden gai, Shinjuku Omoide Yokocho are nice to visit.

    A Sake tasting at Sake Cellar can be an option.

    In addition to the above, I am available in the neighboring cities.

    Kawagoe is an old town developed in the 17th century. It has very close relationship with the Edo central government. Kawagoe castle ruins, Kitain temple and 500 Buddha statues will welcome the guests.
    These areas are renovated and provide an old days atmosphere.
    Japanese style sweets food stands will fascinate the guests.
    Kawagoe is about 1 – 1.5 train trip from Tokyo.

    Kamakura is the first Samurai worriers government established in the late 12th century.
    The Buddhism are introduced to Japan in the 6th century, and flourished at Nara and Kyoto later. A newer Buddhism sect such as Zen has well developed at Kamakura area.
    Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine, Gigantic Buddha statue at Kotokuin Temple and the flower temple Hasedera Temple are must-see.
    Kamakura is about 1 – 1.5 train trip from Tokyo.

    Title: What's a Private Tokyo Day Tour Like for First-Time Visitors? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were a group visiting from North America. It was everyone's first time in Japan and their first trip to an Asian country. They were enjoying a cruise trip and had already toured Kyoto and Osaka before this Tokyo tour. Tokyo Skytree and Omoide Yokocho were requested by the guests, and they took an active part in the sightseeing activities. In particular, they had a strong interest in food, and at a matcha cafe in Asakusa they tried not only matcha but also shaved ice. While traveling by car, they bought taiyaki and takoyaki and sampled them in the vehicle. At Omoide Yokocho, in addition to what they ordered themselves from the English menu, they asked me, the guide, to "order everything worth tasting," so I suggested and ordered items such as an assorted yakitori platter and an oden set. They also enjoyed edamame and the dried radish appetizer, and they savored the oden daikon, exclaiming, "This is delicious!" They also energetically shopped for souvenirs at Nakamise Street, Solamachi, and a Starbucks cafe they spotted while traveling by car (a mug available only in Japan).

    What Can You See on a Private Aomori Day Tour? A Licensed Guide's Report Hiranai Scallop Center Seiryuji Temple (Showa Great Buddha) Sannai-Maruyama Site ASPAM (Aomori Prefecture Tourist Center) Observation Deck + Panorama Theater Nebuta Warehouse (accompanied by a Nebuta guide) This time the guests made the challenging request of wanting to see "Aomori's tourist spots and rare places" (laughs), but I did my best to deliver. Aomori Prefecture is famous for its large, richly flavored scallops, so I guided the group to the Hiranai Scallop Center. Since it is a place aimed at locals, there was almost no English signage, but they took photographs of the exhibits and surrounding scenery with great interest. At Seiryuji Temple, in addition to the usual route, we walked a full loop course. It seemed they were able to enjoy the freedom of time that only individual travel allows. At the Sannai-Maruyama Site (my home ground), we explored while sharing various bits of trivia, and they seemed satisfied with the question-and-answer exchanges as well. On the 2nd floor of ASPAM, they enjoyed the immersive and powerful Panorama Theater, experiencing the four seasons of Aomori Prefecture with 3D glasses. This is an itinerary item not found on the usual inbound course (and the guide admission fee is waived). I would like to actively incorporate it going forward. To wrap up, we toured a Nebuta warehouse where production work was still in progress, together with a Nebuta guide (reserved free of charge). We were able to go deep inside areas that are normally off-limits, so they took plenty of photographs.

    Title: What Is a Private One-Day Tour of Tokyo Like? A Licensed Guide's Report on Meiji Shrine, Omotesando, and Akihabara The guests were a little late for the meeting time, but since I had received an email that morning, I was able to wait in the lobby without worry. The only place I guided as originally planned was Meiji Shrine at the start; after that, I adjusted the itinerary each time based on the guests' wishes. At Meiji Shrine, the guests also wanted to stroll through the inner garden and showed interest in shopping, so we spent nearly twice the usual amount of time there. I had visited the hedgehog cafe HARRY before, so I was able to guide the guests there without hesitation. It is possible to enter without a reservation until around noon, but it starts to get crowded after that, so depending on the time, some caution may be needed. Since some of the guests wanted to explore Omotesando, we had lunch at a slightly upscale restaurant inside Omotesando Hills. Thanks to the guests, I was able to discover a restaurant I would not normally visit. Finally, I guided the guests to Akihabara, which was near their accommodation, and ended the tour there.

    I was born in Tokyo and was raised in the suburbs of Tokyo called Tama area. When I was in university, I majored in western dramas, so I am good at playing like an actor.
    I like reading, listening to the music, and walking. I belong to several walking clubs, and sometimes I guide the members around Tokyo.
    One of my strengths as a guide is that I know well about kombu, Japanese kelps. In December every year, I work at a traditional kombu shop in Tsukiji Fish Market. At that shop, I learned a lot of things related to kombu or other ingredients for washoku. I can explain the different characteristics of them to you.
    Also, I am familiar with Japanese flowers and plants. If you stroll around a Japanese garden with me, I am sure you will be able to enjoy beautiful flowers and unique plants in every season.
