    What Is a Private Tokyo Tour Like? A Licensed Guide's Report on Tsukiji, Meiji Shrine, and Harajuku The guests were visitors from Europe. There was some concern about how much they would enjoy Tsukiji given their dietary preferences, but they enjoyed fresh tuna and showed great interest in Japanese swords and traditional, healthy ingredients. At Meiji Shrine, we encountered a Shinto-style wedding and many families celebrating Shichi-Go-San, which allowed the guests to get a more vivid sense of the relationship between Japanese people and shrines. I had planned to take them to Harajuku at the end, but since one of the guests was tired from walking, I simply explained how to get there, guided them to a restaurant that could accommodate their needs, and we parted ways.

    Title: What Can You See on a Full-Day Private Walking Tour of East Tokyo? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were a group visiting Japan for the first time from North America. Having arrived at Haneda Airport the previous evening and taken a taxi to their Hotel, they planned to stay in Japan for about two weeks. After spending several days in Tokyo, they intended to visit Hakone, Kyoto, Osaka, and Hiroshima, before returning home from Kansai Airport. A day trip to Nikko was planned for the following day, and another full day of sightseeing in Tokyo the day after. One of the guests followed an ovo-lacto vegetarian diet, while the others had no dietary restrictions. The tour took place under clear skies, though the weather was somewhat chilly. We mainly explored the eastern side of Tokyo. We first visited Hamarikyu Gardens (arriving early, with the closing time in mind). I explained "the history of the garden" and "the Edo period and the Meiji Restoration." The guests commented, "The contrast between the Japanese garden scenery and the modern buildings in the background is wonderful," and "It's like Central Park in New York." We then walked to the Tsukiji Outer Market. I explained "the history of Tsukiji Market" and "the difference between Tsukiji Market and Toyosu Market." The guests browsed various shops, took a liking to roasted soybeans and bought a large quantity, and sampled strawberry daifuku and ice cream. They asked questions such as, "Is it always this crowded?" and "Do all the people in Tokyo come here to buy fish?" Taking the subway and JR lines, we headed to Rikugien Garden. I explained "the history of Rikugien." Here too, the guests said, "The Japanese garden is wonderful. I'm thinking of building one like it in my own home garden." From there, we returned to Ueno Station and had lunch at ramen shops inside the station. One of the guests wanted vegan vegetarian ramen while the others wanted regular ramen, so we split up and had lunch at separate ramen shops. We moved on to Asakusa. From Kaminarimon Gate, we passed through the Nakamise shopping street to the main hall, which was extremely crowded. I explained "the history of Sensoji Temple and the transition from Edo to Tokyo," "what a five-story pagoda is," and "the difference between Buddhism and Shinto." The guests asked questions such as, "What are the lanterns for?" "Do all Japanese people believe in Buddhism?" and "What kind of teaching is Buddhism?" Since the guests expressed concern about how to reach the train for Nikko the following day, I guided them to Tobu Asakusa Station so they could see the entrance and ticket gates. We then returned to Nippori and visited Yanaka Ginza and Nezu Shrine. One of the guests said they loved old shopping streets, and they bought apple pie and sweet bread as souvenirs. They also commented, "The whole town is clean. Why is there no litter on the streets?" "Why are there no trash cans on the streets?" "It's really quiet inside the subway," and "The public restrooms are clean and pleasant." Finally, taking the subway and JR lines, I saw the guests off at Shinagawa Station, where we parted ways.

    Self-introduction:
    In the past, I was stationed in Canada, the United States, and Mexico as an expatriate of a Japanese bank for over 11 years.
    Since I have been mainly involved in the financing business in the United States for a long time, I think I am able to provide interpretation and translation services related to business and finance.
    I am a certified CPA in the United States.
    In addition, for three years from April 2016, I will be engaged in Japanese-English translation work (part-time), and I can also handle translation work.
    Although I don’t have a qualification in Spanish, but I think I can handle day to day conversation in Spanish without any problems.
    My hobby is trekking and from time to time, take a walk around mountains near Tokyo like Mt. Takao, Tanzawa, etc. I think it is possible to provide tourist information here as well.
    Since April 2015, I have been working as a Tokyo Metropolitan Tourism Volunteer and Tokyo Metropolitan Disaster Prevention Volunteer.
    One more, I have a separate house near Asuka Village, Nara prefecture, and I stay there for a total of about 30 days every year and have been enjoying sightseeing personally in the vicinity. Therefore, I think in the Kansai region, especially in Nara, Asuka, Yoshino, Koyasan, Kumano Kodo, etc., where I think I will be able to tour guide with confidence.

    What Is a Private One-Day Osaka Tour Like? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were visitors from North America. The agency had informed me in advance that they were in very good health, and indeed they walked well throughout the day. They were quite eager to see many places and walked at a relaxed pace, so we spent a considerable amount of time at Osaka Castle Park and were never able to fully recover the schedule afterward. The plan had been to part ways at Dotonbori before lunch, but the okonomiyaki restaurant they wished to visit was full, and since they were unsure of the way back, I ended up escorting them all the way to their accommodation. I believe they were satisfied with the tour.

    Title: What Is a Private Peace Park and Shukkeien Garden Tour in Hiroshima Like? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were visitors staying in Japan for a period of time, and I guided the group to the Peace Memorial Park and Shukkeien Garden in Hiroshima. On this occasion, the group used a weekend to travel to Miyajima and Hiroshima. During their stay in Japan, the group had traveled to many parts of the country, visiting almost everywhere except Kyushu. At the Peace Memorial Park and the museum, some of the guests seemed a little bored, but at the riding grounds within Shukkeien Garden they ran around energetically and enjoyed feeding the carp in the pond. A "Chrysanthemum Exhibition" happened to be taking place at Shukkeien Garden, and some of the guests eagerly took photographs. One of the guests was well informed about the effects of radiation.

    Title: What Is a Private Nikko Day Tour Like When Kegon Falls Is Too Crowded? A Licensed Guide's Report Because this season gets crowded, I had asked the guests to purchase round-trip Tobu limited express seats online in advance to match my schedule. This removed any worry about the train. On a Sunday last month, I had guided in Nikko and experienced the traffic congestion coming from Kegon Falls. Also, hearing TV news that during the holiday period around the 2nd to 4th of December it was taking four hours between the Irohazaka slopes and Nikko Station, I explained the situation to the guests by email, telling them that if we went to Kegon Falls we would not be able to see Toshogu Shrine or catch our return train. I asked them to choose their destination between natural beauty and man-made beauty. Since coming all the way to Nikko without seeing Toshogu Shrine would leave one wondering why one had come at all, instead of Kegon Falls we visited Tamozawa Imperial Villa Memorial Park, touring the interior and gardens of the villa used by emperors from the Meiji to Showa eras. The guests enjoyed the simple yet beautiful architecture and gardens. It was indeed the right decision not to go to Kegon Falls, as the downhill road was congested from the morning. The guests were impressed by the beauty of the Shinkyo Bridge and the river. Although Nikko Toshogu Shrine was crowded, we also visited the tomb of Ieyasu and the main shrine. The cedar-lined path partway to Futarasan Shrine was a novelty for the guests, and they enjoyed passing through the ring of good fortune at Futarasan Shrine.

    Title: What Is a Private Guided Shopping Tour in Tokyo Like? A Licensed Guide's Report on Asakusa, Akihabara, and Tsukiji The guests were visiting Japan for the first time from Oceania. They were on a two-week trip to Japan. Although they were traveling as part of a group tour, the day was set aside for free time, and they signed up for a guided shopping tour. Given this background, they purchased many souvenirs. In Asakusa, they bought a kimono, and at a large electronics store in Akihabara, they exchanged 6,000 yen worth of bills into 100-yen coins and bought more than ten gashapon capsule toys. They also searched at a retro game shop in Akihabara but could not find something they were fully satisfied with. Still, being able to visit Akihabara seemed to be a great highlight for them. They expressed a wish to return to Japan within a few years. For lunch in Tsukiji, they sat at the counter and enjoyed tuna and salmon nigiri while chatting with the sushi chef. On the way from the Imperial Palace toward Tokyo Station, there was even a surprising moment when they happened to run into another participant from the same group tour coming from the opposite direction.

    • 20:20 break up in the city center (near Kamiyasho-nishi) / call a taxi to take them back to the Ujina port

    Title: What's a Private Afternoon Cruise-Ship Tour of Miyajima Like? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests arrived at Berth 5 in Ujina at 13:00, and we were finally able to meet just before 14:00. The day's guiding therefore started as a 14:00–21:00 tour. Perhaps because we had exchanged detailed emails in advance about the places the guests wished to visit, the meeting began with a warm greeting rather than the guardedness sometimes felt these days. As the guests were artists, the photo sessions at each destination were quite long, which made it difficult to move forward, and to my regret I was not able to take them to "Shiraito Falls beyond Daishoin Temple" or "Momijidani," both of which I had thought would be perfect for photography. Since one of the guests was experiencing foot pain, adjusting the walking pace of the whole group was a real challenge in terms of time management. Although I had been informed in advance that one of the guests had a shrimp allergy, I did not realize that "okonomiyaki sauce contains shrimp extract" (I had guided people in similar cases in the past, and the restaurant had never mentioned such a thing!), so even though we entered an okonomiyaki restaurant at that guest's strong request, they were unable to eat it, which was a painful mistake on my part. The tour was scheduled until 9 p.m., but as the guests were anxious about the time needed to return to the port, we parted ways by mutual agreement. I flagged down a taxi on the street and guided them to the cruise ship terminal. The guests were very pleased with the day's guiding, and upon leaving they gave me a somewhat generous tip. I am reporting this just to be sure.

    What Is a Private Miyajima and Hiroshima Day Tour Like? A Licensed Guide's Report ■Miyajima Since the guest mentioned an interest in art, we did a rice scoop (shakushi) making experience where the design could be created freely. The guest was very friendly and quickly became close with the shakushi-making instructor, and the atmosphere remained warm throughout. There was a traditional crafts event taking place and paintings of Itsukushima Shrine on display, along with many things that appealed to the guest, who was pleased to have been able to visit today. ■Hiroshima Castle Since they had visited Himeji Castle the previous day, I was a little worried, but they said that the inside of the castle being set up like an exhibition space was interesting and different from Himeji Castle. When we met in the morning it was very cold and both the guest and I were dressed warmly, but it grew warmer during the day, and after going up to the castle keep we had ice cream at a shop located right outside the keep. ■Peace Memorial Museum The guest had been experiencing foot pain since before coming to Japan, and after I finished explaining the Atomic Bomb Dome, the pain became stronger, so we parted ways without going around the entire Peace Park. They were very regretful about not being able to see everything, but decided that this was the best choice considering their physical condition. Since they would continue sightseeing in Hiroshima the next day, I shared information about the Peace Memorial Park, the Peace Memorial Museum, good okonomiyaki restaurants, and art museums. At the end, I called a taxi and saw them off as they returned to their hotel. Both Miyajima and Hiroshima Castle involve a lot of walking, which may have been a burden for the guest. I reflected that, for cases like this, I should have prepared a route that allows visiting the most important places in the shortest way. The guest was especially delighted with experiences such as the shakushi making and the foot bath, and seeing the guest enjoying themselves made me very happy too. It was wonderful to be able to tour Hiroshima with such a cheerful guest with a lovely smile. Thank you again this time.

    What Is a Private Tokyo Walking Tour Like? A Licensed Guide's Report on Meiji Shrine and Shibuya The guests were visitors from South America. They were very friendly and warm together. One of the guests had previously stayed in Japan for six months as an exchange student during university and was deeply moved to finally visit Japan, a long-held dream and a place they loved. Since one of the guests was undergoing treatment for a knee injury, we cancelled the originally planned walks in Asakusa and Harajuku and instead took our time exploring other spots. It was a beautiful clear autumn day, and the guests thoroughly enjoyed the autumn scenery of Japan. It was especially memorable when one of the guests wrote a wish and prayed at Meiji Shrine. The guests were very grateful for a wonderful day, and we said goodbye at Shibuya Station.

    Before becoming a tour guide, I worked for a major steelmaking company as an engineer for many years. During my career, I lived and worked in both Germany and the United States for a total of five years. These experiences helped me understand different cultures and ways of thinking, which now helps me connect easily with guests from around the world.

    After retirement, I chose a second career as a tour guide because I truly enjoy meeting people from different countries and sharing Japanese culture, history, and daily life. I have been working as a guide for more than nine years and continue to enjoy every tour.

    I currently live in Tokyo, but I was born and raised in Kobe, near Osaka, and my family roots are in Kyoto. As a result, I have extensive knowledge not only of Tokyo but also of Kyoto, Osaka, and many other parts of Japan. I enjoy introducing both famous landmarks and hidden local gems that many visitors might otherwise miss.

    Title: What Is a Private Kyoto Culture Tour Like? A Licensed Guide's Report Body: The guests were visitors from Africa who work in hospitality, so their assessment of accommodations was quite discerning. Some of the guests had a deep interest in Japanese history and culture, and asked a wide range of questions — starting with Japanese graves, then moving on to religion, history (such as the difference between shoguns and emperors), customs (such as Obon and Onmyodo), bonsai, the tea ceremony (which we experienced at Daisen-in), the Gion geisha district, kimono, and traditional crafts. It was quite demanding to answer them all, but I was impressed by how attentively they listened to my explanations. Others in the group simply seemed to enjoy traveling together, not particularly focused on listening to me or on looking at any one thing, but always smiling, cracking jokes, and very easygoing. Everyone enjoys travel in their own way, and I would be delighted if they enjoyed Kyoto on a day with wonderful weather.
